Hey, it's World Nutella Day! Live it up. Meanwhile, what fragrance are you wearing?
I'm wearing Parfums 06130 Yuzu Rouge.
Upcoming: we have two community projects this week. On Friday (2/6), we're celebrating National Grapefruit month. Wear a fragrance with grapefruit; extra credit if Grapefruit (or Pamplemousse or Pomelo or whatever) is in the name of the scent.
Then on Sunday (2/8), we're celebrating this blog's 10th birthday: wear a fragrance you learned about on Now Smell This, whether from a review, another reader, a swap, anything.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
There is a bakery nearby that makes pain au nutella. If it stops raining, I might need to walk over and get one at lunch.
I am wearing Parfums d’Empire Yuzu Fou which is an excellent long lasting version of an eau de cologne (though sadly discontinued) with a bit of that slightly sweaty cedar scent in the background.
Yuzu Fou got discontinued? I could have sworn I’d seen it in the new packaging…
It is on PdE’s webstie, but I didn’t see it at Luckyscent when I checked this morning, so I jumped to a conclusion.
Ah, they’re probably just out of stock or something. Thanks!
Wearing Naomi Goodsir Bois d’Ascese and this is an amazing smoke scent and now I’m starting to get some incense but it’s still mostly smoke
Yum, I like smoke.
One of only a handful of FB purchases I made last year. I really love it!
SOTD: Knowing. Felt good when I applied but once I got out the house the cold seemed to have eaten it up. Hm…
It’s too darned cold!
Knowing is still perfect for winter!
I’m trying Silver Iris. I can tell it’s not my thing. Smells like …… iris.
I usually like “smells like iris” but Silver Iris was not my thing either.
I like iris in composition but not in “soliflores.” This seems like an especially dull one though.
Ha!
I’m not a fan of it either and I do like iris.
Wearing Bas de Soie, which I think of as Rich Lady hand Cream, but a nice iris withall.
That one does smell like rich lady hand cream! I remember it having a ton of hyacinth in it too?
Yes, a lot of hyacinth. Which can go one of two directions on me, either spicy-floral or metallic. In BdS it’s metallic, and taken with the iris it’s a little like chewing on tinfoil, unfortunately. 🙁
I love iris as a note or as the main player and I didn’t like Silver Iris either.
Twins! I enjoy its simplicity! I tend to avoid very complex perfumes (e.g. anything by Vero Profumo) as it will distract my brain. My own comment males me think that I think about my perfumes rather than feel them.
I love Nutella. When I was a child we lived in Germany and I ate Nutella long before I ate peanut butter. I rediscovered it in the early 2000s when the stores in the my small town started stocking it. Still my favorite. SOTD is a Possets sample – Nevada Heat. This is a good one for a drizzly cold day, quite spicy. The descriptions mentions a “supersweet vanilla” and citrus but all I’m getting is the spice.
My son’s second favorite homemade ice cream is Nutella, which I make with Nutella brownies, which are the easiest thing in the world:
1 1/4 cup (13 oz.) Nutella
2 large eggs
1/2 cup flour (I’ve made w/ spelt & einkorn, both work fine)
optional: 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon baking powder (I use a scant 1/4 t)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly coat an 8×8-inch (or 9×9) baking dish with butter or nonstick cooking spray.
In a large bowl, combine all ingredients and mix until smooth. Pour into prepared dish and smooth top with spatula.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Be careful not to over-bake, otherwise brownies will dry out. Let cool before cutting and serving.

*paste*
*bake*
*devour*
They’re really delicious, esp. for something so easy to whip up. The ice cream is more of a pain, but they’re very good together.
We demand your recipe for his first-favorite flavor, too!
Well, that’s ice cream! And his favorite is Vietnamese Coffee, made w/ sweetened condensed milk & plenty of cardamom. We don’t make it very often because of the caffeine, and we’ve tried making it decaf, but it’s not nearly as good. I can post that if you want it…
Ha. Inspired by all our posting last week about cardamom and coffee, I’ve made a batch of strong decaf with ground cardamom and just dash of agave to sweeten. Very good!
condensed milk & cardamom sounds really yummy..
OF, cardamom coffee is one of the main reasons I miss coffee. Chai tea is good, but not the same!
Floragal, it’s delicious and very rich, but I can’t eat it at night. Which makes it less useful, as ice cream, since that’s when I want ice cream 🙂
OMG PLEASE POST THAT ICE CREAM RECIPE! okay, ending caps lock now. 🙂
Sun Mi, the original recipe was from Saveur:
http://www.saveur.com/article/Recipes/Vietnamese-Coffee-Ice-Cream
After trying several other recipes, I modified the Saveur recipe slightly to:
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup full fat milk
(or, use 2 cups half & half)
5 egg yolks
7-8 cardamom pods, freshly cracked
a few small chunks cinnamon bark
Everything else the same (the 1/2 t salt, the coffee and the can of condensed milk). You want a dark roast coffee — we use Trader Joes Back Bay for this.
The Saveur recipe does not have you cook the egg yolk /condensed milk mixture into a custard after you whisk in the hot cream, but I do put it back in the pan and cook it as you would with most custard-based ice creams (never even tried it their way, admittedly). Then I chill overnight and churn the next morning.
You can find another good Vietnamese coffee ice cream recipe at Serious Eats.
Thank’s! Copied and pasted. 🙂
Yes, thanks so much especially on behalf of my daughter, who could live on Nutella.
All this food talk is killing me! 🙂
After losing 25 lbs. and keeping it off for two years, my doc wants me to lose 15 more! Ugh. I hate dieting.
Sorry! I know I sure can’t eat what I used to.
That sucks big time. You were fabulously svelte when we met last summer. Tell the doc stick figures are for those who can’t draw!
Thanks, Hajusuuri, for the support. I guess I’m just feeling a little grumpy about having to lose more. But increased good health will be worth having to cut a few calories!
The first time around I found that some of my sweeter and gourmand perfumes were good substitutes for desserts. 🙂
I just bought a six pack of Possets samples. One of them was Nevada Heat 🙂
I am wearing Guerlain Bois d’Armenie from a decant and love it.
You smell great!
After two days w green spices I sweetened things up a bit with Chanel Egoïste. Goes well with the Swedish pastry “semla”, a cardamom bun with marzipan and whipped cream, traditionally eaten just before lent but nowadays it is available from about New year’s day :).
Cardamon, marzipan, and whipped cream are probably 3 of my favorite ingredients – that sounds so good.
Just googled it. I looks like a giant profiterole combined with a hot crossed bun. Served with coffee? Yes, please!
Why do I have to be in the U.S. right now?!?
Cardomom and marzipan? Two of my favourite things! Oh how i wish there were a bigger Swedish community here then there’d be the slightest chance of getting to try one. Our answer to Swedish cuisine? Ikea 😕
Ikea has saved the lives of thousands of Swedish citizens living abroad :). When the craving for Swedish meatballs, pickled herring and lingonberry jam can’t be handled anymore they know where to turn for relief :).
IKEA has pickled herring? My great-grandmother (whose parents were Scottish) always insisted on pickled herring for New Year’s, but In recent years I either haven’t found it at all, or only found a jar with corn syrup in it. I guess it’s time to make a trip to Ikea.
They have made changes in their grocery department recently, so can’t promise, but it’s worth a shot :). Or I can send you a recipe :).
YUM, want one!
I’m wearing Havana Vanille, even though my bottle is already called Vanille Absolument. Still think HV is a better title.
When they first came out I preferred La Traversee du Bosphore, but these days HV is my favourite out of these two. Although LTDB is gorgeous as well.
I’m very glad to know that there is such a thing as Nutella Day.
Totally agree, can’t understand this name change, frome exotic and interesting to bland and generic. And I love that you keep referring to yours as Havanna Vanille!
I think Cuba made objections, probably found perfume to frivolous.
Mmm nutella. Now I wish I’d brought that instead of peanut butter for my apple this morning.
I’m trying out Jardins D’armide by Oriza L. Legrand. It’s got a whopping punch of powder, but once it settles down it’s not too bad. I get the distinct impression that this perfume would be the love-child of vintage No 5 and L’heure Bleu. There’s the powder and soapy florals of No 5, but there’s a distinct spicy floral (carnation) and mixed with the honey really gives me a L’heure Bleu vibe. I think I like it?
One of my absolute favorites. It was love almost as soon as it dried.
Its on my fb list too…
It bowled me over this morning on the commute in. But I’m warming up to it a lot. I wanted a powdery floral to wear and this definitely fit the bill. I like the animalic touch from the honey too.
My mother actually just informed me it was World Nutella Day. Unfortunately, I don’t have any stashed in my desk at work (which actually wouldn’t be a bad idea).
Does anyone else have troubles picking a fragrance to wear with certain colors?
I’m wearing a blue shirt today, and *always* have trouble picking a scent that doesn’t somehow clash with blue. Wearing Heely Cardinal because I swear, that’s the only thing I can ever come up with that works.
Yes! Pink is my troublesome color, probably because I don’t own a lot of (or any, really) girly floral perfumes, which is what “pink” seems like.
Ditto, I think I have one pink shirt and it perplexes me as what to wear with it.
I don’t wear straight pink, but lots of raspberry, saffron and sienna reds… Neela Vermiere perfumes always seem to work with these colors.
For pink, I suggest wearimg Kelly Caleche EDP.
Oh, now that might be genius. I have a sample of Kelly Caleche coming my way and I’ll try it with pink – thanks for the suggestion!
What kind of blue? Navy, baby, royal? Maybe we can help!
I always like something “modern” and aldehydic with pink, or a citrus or I’ll put on a ridiculous hyper-feminine sweet fragrance to play up the look.
It’s kind of a navy blue, and I’m always drawn towards dark, warm, sweet, and spicy scents, but haven’t quite figured out cool scents yet. I’d love some suggestions! I always need new things to sample. 🙂
I dont do “cool” scents often myself, but any of the Hermes Jardin line work well with navy. But I like amber notes with navy too.
I thinks woods go well with navy blue… Samara, or Champagne de Bois, or Timbuktu, or even Coco Chanel…
Samsara!
I’d suggest Nuit Étoilée (probably influenced by the color of the bottle!)
That could be a cool poll, ask about what perfumes people associate with what color!
Wode!!!
I like either incense or aldehydes with blue – especially royal blue.
(Pink never troubles me, but then I have tonnnnnns of florals, including rose. YSL Paris always works. 🙂 )
cuir ottoman goes well with navy blue. If it’s gray blue, try Gris Clair and if it’s on the periwinkle or cornflower side, try bois de violet the or sous le toit de Paris
Heh–Nutella stashed in my desk would not stay that way very long! 🙂
How about something like Timbuktu? It would honor the indigo…
That’s been on my to-try list for a while… definitely need to make sure this gets into my next batch of samples
I don’t wear blue very often but when I do, I think of blue as being cool, calm, collected and ladylike. I like to wear Bvlgari Blv then, it has all those characteristics but enough spice to give it a bit of zing and keep it from being boring.
SOTD is Violet Blonde – yummy cinnamon goodness right now, and will be yummy woody-vanilla goodness later. 🙂
You smell fantastic! I have liked it for a long time, but now that I managed to snatch a bottle of the interwebbz and can use it frequently I like it even more :).
SOTD is Vetiver Geranium (Creed). Went shopping yesterday and the Creed rep was in NM, so I got a sample of this, Iris Tubereuse and Aventus.
Hoping I remember grapefruit Friday! 🙂
Keeping with the “yummy” theme, I’m wearing PG Praline de Santal.
Delicious! and the cherry on top is that I obtained the bottle throught the most recent Freebiemeet (Thank You Janice!).
And the cherry on top of the cherry? I sent of 3 FB’s to a loving home at the same time. 3 out and 1 in is a good equation!
Now I just need some Nutella and I could die happy 😉
Nice!
SOTD PG 06: L’eau Rare Matale
Vintage-ish (eighties, probably) Eau d’Hermès. Crisp as a linen suit, then dirty leather. Amazing.
Yves Rocher Rose Absolue, but I just sprayed some Safran Troublant on top as a pick me up.
I have layered those two before, and it’s a great combo! The Safran definitely adds some pizazz.
Nutella. Yum. But i cant buy Nutella because then I just eat it all 😕
SOTD Amouage Opus III. I really really want a bottle of this but really really dont want to hand over that much cash. Even to fragrancenet for a far more reasonable price. Stopped in at a niche perfume shop on the way to work today as they’re having a sale, and doused myself in this because I love it. I may have over-applied as the guys at work commented on my fragrant force-field. Oopsies! *I* enjoyed it anyway!! 🙂
Hahaha, fragrant force field – love it. That is a good one. 🙂
Shalimar Ode à la Vanille. It’s raining hard, and I keep catching the most delicious, warming whiffs.
I’m glad that you are true to form, I love the “original” Shalimar but haven’t tried Ode.
Panthere de Cartier parfum. My bathroom is supposed to be finished today, finally, so I am looking to celebrate!
Wearing OJ Ta’if from a sample from the recent swap. I like it, but I like OJ Woman better. This smells a lot like OJ Woman, but without the wonderful pine-y notes. Don’t need an FB of this, hooray!
There are parts of the base of Ta’if and Woman that do smell similar. I get that a bit too. But then, to my nose, Ta’if takes off and keeps going in a different direction. Both are lovely.
I am wearing SL Five O’Clock Au Gingembre for some good spice.
SOTD is Miss Dior and it’s not the Miss Dior Cherie that they now call Miss Dior. I’ve never tried the original Miss Dior before and I’m debating if I like it or not.
I think Miss Dior (the original stuff, of whatever year of production) might be an acquired taste for many people. I like it, but it took a couple of wearings and some humidity in the air for it not to shiv me in the eye.
SOTD is Iris Poudre. Quick decision as I was running late. The aldehydes tickled my nose at first (stupid cold) but it’s lovely now.
I’m wearing that too. Love love love IP, especially the drydown.
I’m wearing Un Jardin en Mediterranee today. I really like it when it’s chilly out. Not sure what I’m going to do for tomorrow. I was looking at my stuff and realized that I don’t have anything with grapefruit. I’m not a citrus-centric perfume person, but I like grapefruit, so it’s weird to me that I don’t have anything with that note.
I’m diggind deep for grapefruit too. I imagine there is some in one of the scores of cologne like frags I have, I just have to find it!
I don’t have either my Moschino Funny! or my Hermes Kelly Caleche with me, as I’m on a trip, so will have to bag the Challenge this week. Oh well. But I like grapefruit better than most other citruses.
After a reasonably careful review of my collections and notes (via fragrantica searches), I can see that the only frag I have with grapefruit is a LD of Un Jardin sur le Nil. So…. apparently I like every other kind of citrus there is but grapefruit in my frags! I’m just going to default to a spicy winter frag with some citrus accords.
SOTD is RL Safari b/c I needed something warm and green to make me think of anything besides bitterly cold wind.
We keep Nutella in the house all the time for quick chocolate fixes. Sometimes just a dab off a spoon will do the trick. But my hubbie devised a quick and tastey snack – he takes a plain flour tortilla and spreads on either some peanut butter OR some cream cheese and then Nutella and rolls it up. It is a remarkably quick and good snack, and you can pack it up quick to take to work. My fav is the cream cheese and Nutella which tastes a lot like some sort of chocolately cheese cake type thing. But I’m t hinking I need to try your Nutella brownie recipe from above!
Love Safari, should have brought it with me except I forgot to decant some for air travel in time.
I love Yuzu Rouge and have a bottle of it. Very refreshing in the summer. Yuzu Fou I haven’t tried, though I probably have a sample of it somewhere.
Today I’m wearing Jour d’Hermes and am really enjoying it. I think I’ll wear it again tomorrow for a long flight, as it doesn’t have huge projection, but I can smell it and the lasting power is good. I haven’t worn this one in awhile, as I don’t remember liking it this much. Perhaps absence made the heart grow fonder!
I love Jour d’Hermes. It’s such a happy scent (and one of the few with grapefruit notes I can tolerate).
And I wasn’t even thinking about the grapefruit when I put it on! But of course the opening is full of it. So, a good choice for tomorrow, too. 🙂
You smell wonderful! I think it’s energizing, too, which should be good for travel.
Bitter cold today but bright sunshine and no snow, yay! I needed some of that yellow goodness in my scent today and chose C.O. Bigelow Winter Lemon No. 1821 (now called Lemon Leaf) as my SOTD. The lemon is fresh and effervescent but creaminess and warmth is added by underlying notes of fig, black currant, and a bit of musk, rose and sandalwood. And I’m wearing a yellow turtleneck, too!
I had some Lemon Leaf shower cream a year or so ago and it was delicious. I currently have a tub of the regular Bigelow Lemon body cream and that’s pretty nice too.
LizzieB sent me some Tolu – I wore it last night to sleep, and I’m gonna roll with it again today!
So not so much a SOTD but a retelling of my un-scientific experiment last night. I went out with 6 friends who I’ve known for over a decade. 3 guys, 3 women and myself. I wore In Fiore Oud Amber Attar and it was a complete gender divide. All 3 women hated it, too strong, too fecal (they used another word LOL) and just too much. They went on and on about liking flower scents, light, clean soap/laundry. To a man, all the guys LOVED it! They didn’t always express it in NST terms, but they got it. One guy summed it up perfectly, “You smell like you just had sex”. It was very interesting their comments and even more interesting to watch the women try and change their minds! I was like, pay attention! Guys don’t want soap, they want SEX. They don’t want you to smell like a brown sugar pop-tart, they want SEX. Not delicate white florals, Sex. LOL, it made for a very interesting conversation and night.
Nature should publish your experiment.
Ha! Loved reading this. Guess the key to get a guy’s attention is the raunchier, the better 😉
Note to self: get sample of Fiore Oud Amber Attar!
Looks like it’s a solid perfume in a gorge brass case for $75. Oh well.
I have the body/bath oil, not the solid. Oil isn’t near that much $$ and goes a long way.
I will agree with the guys want sex smells in their gals’ frags: the most enthusiastic response I ever had to a frag was to my wearing Bal a Versailles (vintage). That dash of civit really does the trick apparently.
Guys want sex? I never knew…;)
I so love this. I agree this should be publicized far and wide! Huzzah for dirty!
TC Alahine today! A generous surprise sample. <3 It's very ladylike and agreeable. Sun warmed ylang-ylang oriental, resinous and creamy-powdery.
I love Alahine. Probably my favorite ambery floral.
Scent twin 🙂 must get a decant or bottle!
Calamity J by Juliette has a Gun for me today (again). I seem to be stuck on this scent this week.
Just noticed that Sephora has 3X loyalty points for perfume right now – thinking if there is anything I need/want from their shelves.
How does this 3x loyalty point system work? I am not familiar with it…
Iris Ukiyoe for me today. This one doesn’t seem to get a lot of love out there, but I’m glad to have some. Bright, soft and pretty for those days when bright, soft and pretty is all I’m looking for.
Oh I do love that one! I need to pull out my decant again.
I like it too!
I tried this one recently and it was really lovely! But I’m a sucker for soft pretty scents. I get headaches easily from the sillage bombs. 🙂
Overslept again, it’s becoming a problem. Had dream where a law was passed for public health that banned cold ice cream. So it was servedhot, like coffee. Unsettling.
Anyway, NR For Her Edp is my sotd.
Ewww, that is a very unsettling dream. The world NEEDS ice cream!
In that world, we all need some of Robin’s vietnamese coffee ice cream!
I’m wearing Donna Karan Black Cashmere.
You smell wonderful.
ooh fabulous. did you know there’s a shower gel too? currently on clearance at beautyencounter.
I recently found out I’m the victim of fraudulent tax filing (apparently it’s up 650% this year), so I’m wearing the ever gorgeous VC&A Bois d’Iris as I wade through the additional paperwork and phone calls!
Love VC&A Bois d’Iris! Never knew there was such a thing as fraudulent tax filing…
Someone uses your social to file taxes in your name so they can get your tax refund. Seems like a lot of work to me…
Oh no! Best wishes for recovering your taxes and your sanity. Bastards!
That sounds like a nightmare! I had no clue this could even happen but I guess in this digital, impersonal age anything is possible…
This might call for the purchase of a consolation bottle of perfume to get you over the stress;)
I think that’s a wonderful idea. 🙂
That is terrible! Can they catch the perpetrators?
We’ll see, the IRS came to our firm to talk to us and are doing an investigation…
Oh no, so sorry!
Oh man, good luck sorting that out! Haven’t encountered that particular malfunction, but once it took me the better part of the year, *and intervention by my congressman’s office* to get my refund released–they found it suspicious that, as a freelancer required to pay estimated taxes, I had paid them too much. You’d think they’d like that!
Ugh, there was a 60 Minutes segment on this awhile back – so scummy. I hope you can clear it up as painlessly as possible. :/
Yikes!! There’s a lot of fraud out there these days… kind of scary to read the news these days. Glad you’re wearing a scent to carry you thru!
Good luck sorting it out, it sounds like an awful scenario.
Going to sniffy client house call. Planning on wearing lddm soaked scarf and stopping en route to get some Nutella!
SOTD is too boring to mention. Free sample from Twisted Lily. OK, I’ll mention: MFK Acqua Universalis. Well it won’t offend anyone here at work, anyway (other than me)
Today felt like a vanilla day for me. So, my SOTD is Vanilla Anise by JM. Yesterday, someone mentioned that this month they were only going to use their samples. I thought this was a great idea, so I tried it this morning. Haven’t worn this scent in ages, and I’m glad I was able to today. Reminded me of how much I really like it and that this is the perfect season for it. Plus, this will give me a chance to wear something different instead of wearing the same fragrances all the time.
Didn’t know what to bring to the North, but somewhere under all my layers is Bois d’Argent. I liked, but didn’t love it back home, but brought my little decant to see if it agreed with -30 and snow.
Wearing SJP’s Covet layered with Frankincense EO. I think these 2 things smell marvelous together….
I will admit, Nutella does not taste good to me now that I’ve discovered Justin’s Chocolate-Hazlenut Butter — more expensive but worth every penny.
Today I’m wearing an undeservedly neglected scent: SL Cèdre. I’d almost forgotten how nice this fruity-woody tuberose is. I hope everyone has a great day.
So now Nutella isn’t worth eating? That must be some fabulous chocolate-hazelnut butter… (bet I can’t get it where I live. Pout.)
I should really try Cedre.
Oh, I have clocked Justin’s at my local health food place and have been tempted on more than one occasion…:p
YES!!!! That stuff is awesome. I eat it with a spoon.
Overdose of Lyric. Feels great.
and you smell great, too!
I love that at 5pm in the afternoon I’m still getting wiffs of 31 Rue Cambon as I sit at my desk. Such a perfect office scent!
Divine.
Who knew by 4160 Tuesday’s . Still working my way through samples. It only lasted an hour, and as I wasn’t a huge fan I now get to wear something else for the rest of the day!
Dang!! Wish I’d known it was Nutella Day when I stopped at the market after work. A big fat delicious jar of it would be sitting beside me now…
SOTD: Ormande Jayne Sampaquita
I think I am the only person in the universe who does not like Nutella. I like hazelnuts, I like chocolate but it just tastes odd to me. YMMV 😉
SOTD is PG Iris Oriental.
You know, I really don’t like Nutella, it’s too sweet for me. PS you smell wonderful!
I don’t like Nutella either, everyone in the family loves it but me
SOTD = Atelier Cologne Silver Iris
Straigt -up sweet iris. LOVE!
I was surprised by how much I liked this one. I’ll have to wear it again soon!
Still feeling under the weather, but I tried a bit of VC&A Muguet Blanc today. I really love the bottles for the Collection Extraordinaire. It really makes me want to buy a scent, just for the bottle. But which one?? When spring comes, I may succumb to California Reverie.
I’m wearing Divine L’Homme Sage and I love the saffron in this one. It’s funny a lot of my winter scent favs fall into the masculine category. I also tried DSH’s Metropolis and thought that was pretty good too.
You smell great Colleen – love the spice and woods combination! 🙂
Darn, knew I should have checked in earlier… Too late for a nutella fest this close to bedtime. I wore Encens Flamboyant today, then switched to Sienne l’Hiver for the evening.
SOTD is Ted Lapidus White Soul Gold & Diamonds. I can’t really blame NST for this blind buy. I saw the new fragrance announcement here, read the words “Francis Kurkdjian” and “orange blossom,” and an obsession was born. I think it’s only the sweet, grape-y version of the OB that isn’t working for me. If you like that iteration of OB, and Thierry Mugler Alien, you might love this.
