The ideal American perfume doesn’t smell clean, it smells like cleanser. Leaving aside whether any reasonable person would spend $290 – the current price of [Creed] Love in White – for something that smells like it could kill mildew, if that’s what American sex appeal smells like, we might as well just dab Purell on our wrists and call it a day.

Ouch. Head down. Wearing Love in White today (again) and enjoying it (again).
Hey, love what you love and don’t worry about it, really!! We all have perfumes in our collection that get sneered at by others from time to time, there’s no way around it if you’re going to read what people think about perfume, right?
Creed doesn’t seem to get a lot of love, but I enjoy many of their scents, like Tabarome, Original Santal and Neroli Sauvage (my husband wore the last one for a few years and I just loved it).
Chin up! ; )
Gosh, I know lots of people who do slather their wrists (and hands) in Purell all day, particularly in winter when everyone has a cold.
She means you might as well use it as your perfume.
Great article! Thanks for sharing, Robin. And bring on the indoles!! 😉
Yes, bring on the indoles! And the skanky musks, rooty vetiver, rank patchouli, and deep, dark, resinous woods!
NST got some good press there. THanks for the link!
I am always interested to see what other people want to be snarky or snobby about, but it is a bad habit everyone falls into from time to time.
I read back over things I put in blogs a while ago and cringe, sometimes. Perfume is such a personal thing. If it smells good, wear it!
Thanks for sharing this article! I really, really enjoyed it. I thought it was balanced and and it definitely made me smile at the end. I feel like I’ve been hearing so much about “the end of niche” lately, what with the sort of sweep of buyouts that occurred. It’s been a little depressing but this article was really positive, and it was great to see with a more optimistic outlook for the industry.
