Wednesday scent of the day 1/21

Posted by Robin on 21 January 2015 187 Comments

Liz Taylor, Bvlgari earrings

Happy Wednesday! If you've the time, do tell us what fragrance you're wearing today.

I'm wearing Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Rubis Rosé, inspired by Elizabeth Taylor.

Two reminders: the freebiemeet is still open! And this Friday, 1/23, will be Layered Friday: layer two or more fragrances, or layer fragrance(s) with a scented body product.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SOTD Seville a l’Aube – I skipped something in my regular rotation to wear this again. This is moving up my Buy a Bottle list by leaps and bounds.

You smell fantastic! I bought a bottle of this before Christmas and have no regrets at all, it’s a beautiful scent and I’m reaching for it regularly.

I like this one a lot too.
Tempted by the free 50mls of Caligna with $130 purchase that was announced on this blog yesterday.
Could add Seville and Caligna to my collection within the next week!

One of the very few orange blossom frags that don’t go soapy on me. Gorgeous.

Hear so many people raving about it I’ve tried it at least twice and both times was absolutely unsuccessful: somehow it turns so indolic on my skin that the 2nd time I had to scrub it off. What a shame!
I wonder if I’m the only one who experienced that :)!
Usually my skin loves orange blossom.
My SOTD is Majda Bekalli Mon Nom Est Rouge and I love it regardless of it’s similarity to Epic which I love as well).

My mom was super disappointed by the reformulation, not that she knew what reformulation was, but she said it smelled weaker and didn’t last as long and just wasn’t the same. I had to break the bad news to her that it wasn’t her nose….

I’m wearing Equistrius… needed something not too overpowering for a morning meeting.

I didn’t have a new year’s resolution to try to empty bottles, but I was surprised this morning at how close to the end of this one I am.

I am always trying to empty bottles of shower gel and tins of tea, but don’t really feel the same about my perfume — despite having way too many bottles.

To me, the idea of emptying a bottle of perfume is heart-breaking, and I try to avoid it!

It’s all backwards! I have a truly ridiculous amount of tea, but I will in fact (knock on wood) drink it all before I die. The perfume, nope.

I had to refrain from buying another box of teabags just last night for this very reason. I have semi-committed to a “no new tea purchases” rule until I get through the tea I already have. Which should take me about another 6 months if I brew say, 12 cups a day…..

Tea, yes definitely! I want to get through the tea that is only ok before I buy new stuff. I’m not bad with shower gel, but lotion and body butter? I think that I have enough for the next three years.

LOVE Silences. The rose in it is just beautiful.

Actually, the whole thing is beautiful, from the cold green wind of galbanum through the pink rose and the chilly iris and the rich moss. I think I tend to wear it more in spring and summer.

There’s a rereleased version now, btw – Silences eau de parfum Sublime. It is nice stuff, and it is really what I had hoped that Chanel No. 19 Poudre would be, a light eau version of galbanum/jasmine/rose/vetiver.

The older version was either eau de toilette (which I’ve never smelled, actually) and parfum de toilette, which is what I have and love. Still pretty easily found on ebay.

what a wonderful choice, PriscillaE! After so many readings about it I have finally got a mini ( I believe a vintage one) and I fell for it so much I had to get a 1oz FB. For the winter it’s absolutely gorgeous. Galbanum and then it becomes very smooth.
      A must for any perfumista.
I wonder if it was reformulated recently or just the packaging redesigned? I think the vintage one has grey dots on the box but the bottle still the same.

Nope. PdT is long gone. (I bought two bottles on ebay and despite their having been partially used, they are PERFECT. I think the black bottle has something to do with that.)

I also hear that if you’re getting the EdT, you want the gray box with “Silences” printed only once on it, rather than the multiple lines of printing. HOwever, I might guess that even the more recent versions would still be wearable if not as rich.

Today I’m wearing Black Oud by Monotheme. There’s just something about it that reminds me of Donna Karan’s Fuel for Men. It’s a lot thinner (and cheaper) than the Donna Karan and it’s no clone but they share that sweetened pineappley petrol vibe. I always think of it as Fuel for Men Lite.

When I had just one fragrance in my wardrobe I wore it daily. I always loved it and it was always perfect for my mood. Now that I have several to choose from I often find myself pondering what to wear. Even with a couple “go –to” choices, I sometimes stand in front of my bottles stumped – and then can apply only to realize that I’ve picked one that just isn’t quite right! Today was one of those days. I ended up going with a sample of Chanel #5 Eau Premiere which is simply lovely and perfect. But, I wonder if I had a bottle of it in my collection if I would have passed it over thinking it wasn’t right for the day!

      I get that too.
Today i actually sat for a long time in front of my (massive) perfume collection and focused individually on quite a few of them, remembering how they smell and trying to recapture them in my mind and memory, and picking them up to sniff.
There were so many of them that wouldve been great choices to wear then, and in this weather. The thing is though, as a morning get-ready ritual, unless I have them in mind, I tend to forget about them because there are so many!!
(and no, it still doesnt in the least inspire me to get rid of any) :)

Needing something different to brighten up a gloomy winter day, I chose the irrepressible Rochas Tocade. Its whimsical bottle with jaunty cap makes me smile, and its rose/vanilla scent – this is another one that ‘a little dab will do ya’ – lingers delightfully throughout the day.

I love the initial blast of Tocade, but I’m not a huge vanilla fan, and I have to be in the right mood to wear it. My problem with Tocade is that I love it initially, but the vanilla note lingers for so long that I get very tired of it. I can put it on in the morning, and still be smelling the vanilla the next morning.

Ah, but I am a huge vanilla AND rose fan, so I’m delighted that I smell both notes for a long, long time, especially since so many scents these days disappear completely in a short period of time.

I wore Tocade yesterday! I usually apply perfume very gingerly, for fear of wiping out co-workers, but yesterday I applied a tiny bit more than usual — and it was the first time that I’d ever really loved Tocade! (Above comments make me wonder if my nose [or my skank-o-meter] is broken, though…)

I shop at the Goodwill fairly regularly (I generally hate shopping, especially malls, but I love re-purposing and bargains). I always check out the toiletries section since I’m ever the hopeful perfumista. 90% of the time, the only things there are seriously sketchy (toothpaste minis…half used Avon lotion) but hey, that means 1 out of 10 times I find a dollar treat, like the Bvlgari or a small unused tube of Sensuous. Definitely worth the effort.

Glad things went well. I love a tiny bit of vintage perfume, or at least old-fashioned stuff, for worrisome things like hospital appointments.

Wore Cuir de Lancome the last time I had to take a child to the ER, and it was immensely comforting while still keeping my backbone straight. (All was well. It wasn’t a concussion. :) But I am glad Gaze gave up football for marching band and cross-country.)

Sweaty housework today, trying to re-instate living room after painting, and in the humidity perfume just seems to disappear..
SOTD #1 Chloe from a magazine wet wipe thing so i could throw it away. I was using Mr Sheen and Spray n Wipe, and wondered what that bizarre fragrance was (thinking not to buy that cleaner scent again). Realised it was Chloe so decided it was a good time for a shower.
#2 was 90’s Chant d’aromes after deciding on what neglected perfume to wear. It didnt last too long, and seemed more vintage than I remember.
#3 Now im wearing Nasomatto Absinth. A warm vetiver, ideal summertime cozy.

In Opus V by Amouage again today. I’ve decided I really like it now. I recently bought some clothes online and got a huge black sweatshirt like thingie that has a huge loose turtleneck and batwing sleeves. It’s super soft and comfy for this cold, snowy day. I sprayed on a generous amount before putting on my huge top and now I just throw the big turtleneck over my face and take a deep breath to get a nice whiff of perfume. A bit goofy, but it’s working.

Wow! What a beautiful picture of Elizabeth Taylor! I have heard a lot of good things about DSH fragrances. I have a sample of one of her vanilla scents. It is just lovely!
Today, my SOTD is Wild Fig and Casis by JM. Great scent; not too sweet and just the right amount of figs!

I’m trying Chergui today. I’m not sure I dabbed enough on because I already can’t smell it that well, but it was really lovely! Warm, snuggly, a bit cocoa-y, a bit leathery. I’ll definitely sample it a few more times and think about getting myself some of this.

I wore Coty Wild Spice, one of three men’s scents they did around fifteen years ago, I guess the other were Wild Woods and Wild Citrus: they did a trio for women too but I paid no attention to it). I used to love Wild Spice but now it’s gone kind of horrible: the base is still magnificent but the top and middle notes are thin and scratchy and aggressive. Another one for the trash can, sadly.

Stepped out of my BWF nook to try Vagabond Prince Swan Princess. Nice, but it’s a bit like the topnotes of Iris Poudre crossed with Infusion d’Iris and Penhaligon’s Violetta. I like all three of those, but for different reasons, and I’m just not in love with Swan Princess.

Think I’ll go splurge with something loud and white-floralated, once this wears off – Poison maybe, or Memoir Woman. Or some White Diamonds parfum would work, come to think of it.

I have about made up my mind to try three of the four of the Brilliant Collection (Fumee d’Or does NOT sound like my sort of thing), even though I don’t “need” any more samples.

Today is my first day back to school, for my SECOND undergraduate. I am feeling old, and wanted to feel confident and cozy. I hadn’t tried Mitzah before, but a generous fairy sent me a decant, so that is what I chose for today and I have no regrets. It was love at first sniff. It’s a warm, cozy amber but it’s still fairly light. I’m really feelin’ it.

And Mitzah is so great isn’t it. I used to have a big fear of ambers, but that one has really grown on me. One of my favorites from that line (…is this the moment to confess Cuir Cannage did not work for me? *ducks*)

SOTD is Van Cleef and Arpel Pour Homme. So funny, my bf detects a fecal component to this fragrance that I’ve never detected in my over 30 years of wearing this fragrance. Oddly, today I certainly do smell something very of from it’s usual smell. Not civet off, which I also enjoy, something very strangely off. I must say I am enjoying this new development immensely.

After someone mentioned it yesterday, I was craving Bal à Versailles today and layered it with monoi oil (which somehow smells great with just about everything).

I’m fighting the urge to buy a bottle (at least until I finish my decant), but this might be a losing battle. I’ve already reached my admittedly arbitrary one bottle limit, though…

I find waiting until I finish a decant to be a great rule. Sometimes even things I am really moved by, I still only wear but a couple times a year. (L’Air du desert marocain is a prime example for me.) So my decant rule has def saved me from any number of bottle purchases that I might regret.

But I guess it depends on your outlook on your collection. Constraints of budget and temperament make me get a little squirrelly when I’ve find I’ve amassed things I’m not using, but I am guessing not everyone is plagued by this sense of “anxiety of the archive”!

Twelfth Night (an Essense Oil – a lot like Coty Chypre with pine notes and a bit of frankincense).

I haven’t smelled nearly enough to likely make a dent in your opinion of what to test, but my favs from this line are Giardini Segreti (from Italian Journey series) – it’s the most delightful delicate jasmine tuberose flowery concoction I’ve ever smelled. Pure happiness, beauty and sunshine rolled into one lovely fragrance. I’d wear it more, but I horde it. And I shouldn’t. I also have Coeur de Vanille, which is an intoxicating, lightly foody, gourmand bourbon vanille, cinnamon and ?. On my “to buy” list is the Cardamom and Kyphi, which I find just intoxicating. Like I said a few days ago on Jessica’s review of her new jewel frags: I think it would just be almost easiest to plan a trip to Boulder to sniff in her shop. It is too hard to pick from her line!

It was my late Aunt’s her twin who passed from cancer. I went with Chergui today. This is my fifth wearing out of a 1 ml sample and there’s still half remaining. It’s very potent stuff and a little goes a long way. I really like it.

Yesterday I emailed Hermes asking/begging for samples. In my email I just got straight to the point and listed the six perfumes i wanted to try. I hardly expected they’d agree to send more than one or two but I thought it was worth a shot. Less than an hour later I got a reply saying they could send me four of the samples I requested but that the other two were out of stock and they would send bath and body samples in those scents. Talk about great service!

And I wore 5 sprays of Chergui yesterday. Way back when when all I had was a sample, I used sparingly and didn’t care for it – it was like wearing bug-spray. Once I amped it up, it really bloomed (in a good way) and now I know to wear more.

Started out with Lolita Lempicka Au Masculin from a mini this morning, but the lavendery thing in the top (I suspect dihydromyrcenol) wasn’t really doing it for me so I spritzed a bit of LL Eau de Minuit over it. The combo together is like wearing a slightly less-sweet version of the original LL.

SOTD is kind of all over the place. I was having lunch with a lady who lunches who wears Angel and it smells awesome on her (I’m not going to complain about sillage!), so I wanted to go with something classy that wouldn’t clash with said Angel (both fragrance and lady). I picked vintage Coty Chypre for my wrists, but then I wasn’t getting much sillage, so I put on just a dab of L’Arte di Gucci on my neck. Wowzers. What a combo, what a lunch!

Oh my. The sillage, the sillage…

      (You know I love l’Arte!)

L’Arte is really just a masterpiece. Everything I love is in there. It’s amazing it works! And I know you love L’Arte b/c if you didn’t love L’Arte, then I wouldn’t have any! You are the source from which my bountiful decant of L’Arte arises. Do you remember? So many swaps, so many years! That was a long time ago. (I think, if I recall correctly, you gave me some L’Arte b/c I gave you some unloved Temps d’Une Fete!)

SOTD Alahine again. Needed something cozy for a day of train rides and it was perfect.

I tend to have streaks where I only want to wear ALahine.

Delighting in some vintage Shiseido Murasaki (back from the bottle was still purple). Came across an inexpensive gift set: hard-shelled plastic fan-shaped case in purple and gold containing a 22ml EDP and a fan-shaped solid. Both still in excellent condition.

    Bottega Veneta. Luxurious, yet relaxed.

Yes it is! You smell great! I think I wore BV last year almost more than any other frag I own.

I bought a full bottle at first sniff at the NM counter, not long after its debut. A wise buy! I wear it so often, especially in colder weather.

One tiny spray of carnal flower shared between two wrists! I love it but I don’t need more than that otherwise I’d scare people!

I wore Osmanthe Yunnan this morning, loving every one of its fleeting moments… Might put on a bit more now that I’m home from work and can really focus on it.

I’ve been wearing Imperial Opoponax all week to shore up emotionally. It is so lovely, uncomplicated, comforting and easy to wear and other people really seem to love the smell of it. Les Nereides really does a fine job combining vanilla with other notes. I picked up a back up bottle of the old formulation on eBay today. Don’t want to ever be without that one!

SOTD = Hermes Kelly Caleche EDP

This is one of my first FB Hermes perfumes and is firmly entrenched in my Top Ten Perfumes. It is a very office-appropriate light citrusy rose leather, perfect in any weather and lasts all day. I succumbed to the pure parfum but have not worn it yet.

I am a huge fan of Kelly Caleche edt, which was my gateway fragrance. I’ve never tried the edp or pure parfum – no doubt you smell absolutely fabulous!

Better late than never… sotd/evening is TF Sahara Noir. Dry, incensey, and spicy, it was just the ticket for another cold day.

Roja Dove Mischief. Been pretty unsatisfied with everything this week – weather too cold? I don’t know. This wasn’t the cloud of florals I wanted either. But it was pretty. Always pretty.
