It's Wednesday! And it's Wright Brothers Day, and there are 14 days left in 2014. What fragrance are you wearing to celebrate?
I'm in Hermès Un Jardin Sur Le Nil.
Reminder: this Friday, 12/19, is De-stress Friday...as we approach the holidays, wear something that keeps you tranquil and relaxed.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2014, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SOTD is Wisteria Hysteria. I am enjoying this one more each time I wear it, and dreading when my sample is gone….not sure my budget can take the hit of a full bottle…
My budget has never managed the original Stephen Jones either. Wish they were in 30 ml, of course!
Not familiar with this one at all but love the name! Reminded me of visiting my friend in Texas in 2012 when royal wedding frenzy still abounded & telling her that when they were at school/university apparently the Middleton daughters were nicknamed ‘the wisteria sisters’ – because they were ‘fragrant & climbing’ – still makes me chuckle to this day & amused my friend no end.
Going to the Met today to see the El Greco exhibit then an interesting afternoon when my guy meets my ex. There’s a reason I’m dosed in Chinatown…
Ack…hope it all goes smoothly!
Ditto!
Enjoy the El Greco!
Good luck dear!
Oh it went very well.
SOTD is Delire de Roses. I am trying to use up some samples I’ve had for a couple of years. I got several samples of Caron fragrances from Luckyscent a couple of years ago. I rarely see Caron mentioned in NST comments. I’ve read reviews both here and at Bois de Jasmin, but commenters rarely seem to wear these scents.
I wore Caron last week! But I think most of the line has been so poorly reformulated, and when you factor in that it’s harder to find vintage Caron than other brands, I think that’s a big reason. They never had great distribution in the US. Also, many of their best fragrances were urn only, so “real” vintage bottles (with crimped caps that presumably would help with long term storage) don’t even exist.
Does poorly reformulated mean too different from the original, or just bad? I know some reformulations result in a good perfume, but it is different enough from the original that it is a disappointment … or just missing something.
well, a lot of the time the former just equals the latter, in the sense that either the quality isn’t good or it’s been modernised and if you’ve loved whatever the original or even a later version that was still made with quality or a big amount of a restricted ingredient, odds are the difference can be very disappointing. Guerlain has done quite a good job of reformulating Mitsouko to be in line with current IFRA regulations but true to the scent, and I love the current formulation of Jicky – actually more than the pre-versions, which was overly animalic on me. Dior and Caron imo, have lousy reformulations – really pale and insipid in comparison to the older stuff, although that said I think it helps if you can look at reformulations as ‘new’ scents in their own right and just take them for what they are – but Caron came out with Piu Bellodgia presumably because they can’t make Bellodgia adequately anymore because of eugenol or maybe because they wanted to modernise it for a younger demographic – either way it’s pretty awful. But I get that a lot of people would find that difficult to wear what is effectively the ‘ghost’ of a scent. I think to some of these companies reformulation is an opportunity to make the scent ‘younger’ and get more sales. A more recent example is D&G’s Pour Femme, the original was quite a grownup floral, and I think that was only from the 90s. They recently redid it (reformulation isn’t even the word although they used the same name) and although it’s called the same thing it’s now a completely different floral-gourmand (heavy on the marshmallow).
Thanks for the explanation! I don’t have a lot of experience with pre-formulation classics, so it is hard for me to tell if they are even worth looking into.
Well, I would say just bad. But would also add that for whatever reason, the men’s scents at Caron (Yatagan, Anarchiste) seem to be in better shape than the women’s.
Dior in particular — many of the early Dior Edmond Roudnitska fragrances relied on particular notes that have been restricted by IFRA. So it is not just a matter of care or skill or marketing considerations — not sure you could do a decent Diorissimo now in the same way that you can still do a decent Mitsouko. Or so I’ve read — this is not my area of expertise.
I wore both Aimez Moi and Bellodgia on the weekend! And often wear Les Plus Belles Lavandes and Eau de Reglisse in summer, and Narcisse Noir parfum when im not around people! 🙂
I see Parfum Sacre get love now and then.
The only Caron I own in FB form is Le Troisiemme Homme, and I do love it.
For what it’s worth, I have (and LOVE, and wear fairly often) Tabac Blond in the edt formulation, which I got from STC – no idea what era it’s from (if someone knows, please chime in!), and can’t find anything but the edp formulation available anywhere. Haven’t tried the edp so can’t say whether it’s good, bad or otherwise, and don’t know (yet) whether the edt that I love so much is a reformulation of an earlier version or not. But it’s beautiful to me!
The only Caron I’ve tried that really resonates with me* is Parfum Sacre, but I enjoy that one a good deal.
*I’ve tried various vintage samples here and there, but it’s so hard to tell what era you’ve got.
This post by Victoria at Bois de Jasmin may be useful:
http://boisdejasmin.com/2011/03/caron-fragrances-vintage-and-modern-perfume-comparisons.html
Thank you, bastet! Based on that post, I suspect that the current formulation is the edp (which Victoria characterizes as rather bland carnation and not much more), and the edt that I have a decant of is some earlier discontinued formulation. I’ll be sad when it is gone forever.
Love Nil, but I only wear it in summer. I’m wearing the wonderful Therese. Last weeks Diorella reminded me that I hadn’t worn it in a long time.
Have a great day!
I am pretending it’s summer! We’ve had nearly no sunshine here for weeks, although looks like we’ll get a bit today.
I got my mother a few decants for Christmas and it was really hard not to sneak just a tiny sample for myself. However, I kept my impulses in check this morning and am wearing SSS Winter Woods. I just can’t get enough of the musk in this one.
I love WW but it’s just not chilly enough here today. The drydown is soooo delish!
You smell great 🙂
I’m scent twins with you today and waiting (rather impatiently . . . taps foot) for that bit of ‘raunch’ posted about last week by several who wore this . . .
I am sitting here, grooving on Chet Baker and thinking I need to get to work and quit staring at my work computer screen! But I just can’t bear to turn Chet off.
SOTD is Black Flower Mexican Vanilla by Dame Perfumery.
Yay Chet Baker!!
SOTD is 24, Faubourg 😉
Wearing alien eau extraordinaire today.
Nice choice! 🙂
Thank you, you too! 🙂
SOTD is Iris Pallida.
SL Bois de Violette today. Already planning Feminite du Bois for tomorrow – I’ll break out the extrait version I guess.
Crabtree & Evelyn’s Jasmine de Provence today. I sprayed fairly lavishly (chest, elbows, hair), and yet the scent is dissipating fast. I’ll have to reapply tonight…
I am wearing some Guerlain Songe D’Un Bois D’Ete which is like the ?Guerlain version of a Serge, being all spices and darkish woods. I wish Guerlain would do a coffret of all three Les Déserts d’Orient in smallish sizes.
SOTD is Timbuktu. Don’t know why I don’t wear this more …
It really is fantastic – you smell great!
It was a sunny ‘pretty’ day today, so Baiser Volé edp.
I am wearing Seville a l’aube as it’s a happy perfume and it’s a pretty dull day here so I thought that would cheer things up a bit. I think this is my favourite L’Artisan that I’ve tried.
BTW- l’Artisan is still on Hautelook at about 50% off retail- I just bought an l’ambre candle for a great price!
In addition to candles they have some selected perfumes deeply discounted as well.
First of all, thank you for all the first date scent advice yesterday! Namely: Hera, Jenkr, missylulu, thegoddessrena, nebbe, perthgirl, missionista, Dilana, kindcrow, JolieFleurs, Undina, and Deva – wow, you are all full of good perfume advice AND good life and dating advice 😀
I did a little side by side and went with SL’s Un Bois Vanille. The Coromandel was feeling a bit overwhelming to me yesterday once I actually sprayed a bit, and sure enough today I’m fighting a cold so it must have been working against that a bit. It’s okay, though, because I will have more for a future date since this one was fantastic! I sprayed liberally and was told I smelled ‘amazing’ and well…that sure worked out well 🙂 I also figured the SL was a good call because I have a full bottle to return to, and it seems unfair to get someone hooked on Coromandel when I don’t have a full bottle 🙂
Also, I promise my indecision was less about doing what he would like over what I like, and more concern of setting off allergies or something! The weird considerations of online dating vs. meeting someone at work or out and about in the world, eh?
Thank you all again, what a fabulous group of great-smelling people! 🙂
Today’s SOTD! Going low-key out of respect for the cold I’m fighting and wearing Nirvana Black.
So happy to hear the date was a success! AND a positive perfume comment too!
Sorry to hear about the cold and hope it doesnt get worse, but at least you can get through it on a high 🙂
Ohhh! So happy that the date was a smashing success and hope you are feeling better soon 🙂
Yay! Glad it went well 🙂 AND you smell great today too!
Excellent news! Thank you for the update, and aren’t you nice to think about potential allergies. Glad he didn’t have them, and that he liked your choice. .. sounds like he liked it a lot!
Nice news! Feel better soon and good luck for your future dates!
Thanks for the update! That was nice of you to consider potential allergies. I’m glad that you fun and I hope that you feel better soon.
Yaaaay! So pleased it went well.
Wonderful! Glad the date went well 🙂
Hopefully the cold will subside soon.
Great pick for today’s SOTD. NB is such an easy fragrance to wear 🙂
Yay! I hope you have amazing second-third-forth-etc. dates and will smell great.
I needed rose so I found a sample of VC&A Rose Velours. It’s a sweet rose, similar to the Yves Rocher Rose Absolue. Quite nice.
SL Jeux de Peau, yummy sexy baked goods, not at all sweet (although I just today noticed a hint of maple syrup), and plenty of dry sandalwood to back it up. Spectacular.
I plan to wear Jeux de Peau this Friday – it’s a good de-stress perfume for me.
Sunshine! Finally! So nice to see a blue sky out there.
SOTD: PdN’s Amber Oud
I am in AG Eau de Charlotte. I thought about it when I woke up this morning and just decided that it was what I wanted to smell on myself today.
The best reason to pick any particular scent!
Mohur. Mohur. Mohur. Very happy about it!
Such a glorious scent!
What was that you said? I can’t hear you…;)
🙂 !
Have to try that one, especially because I’m on a rose kick.
Oh, yum! I may have to wear that tomorrow. There was the faintest bit left on my coat today and it made me feel all dreamy… Love that one!
SOTD is Naomi Goodsir Or du Serail. This one really needs to be experienced on skin – when I took the cap off this morning, my immediate response was “ick, too sweet!” But I sprayed anyway, and on my skin it’s not too sweet at all. Initially, the tobacco note is very noticeable (and very dry), and the warmth and mild sweetness of baked apple and amber doesn’t show up until later. It also has (on me) a very tiny bit of coconut – I recall that others of you have mentioned the coconut as off-putting or even a complete turn-off, but it stays far in the background for me. A very nice and warm and cozy scent indeed.
I have a sample of that I tried recently and I’m undecided about the coconut. I generally DO NOT like coconut scented anything. I like eating coconut, but the smell usually turns my tummy in products because it’s always too sweet.
That being said, I found it oddly nice in Or Du Serail. I remember asking myself every other hour – do I like this? I think I do. No, the coconut is annoying, wait… no, it’s not. It’s very subtle so it’s not as annoying as I thought it would be 😉
LOL! At least it doesn’t smell like coconut-scented suntan lotion. 🙂
Wearing Guerlain Angelique Noire, from a sample I have had for ages and ages and just now trying. It’s interesting – quite the juxtaposition of the citrusy opening and a more sweet gourmand base. Can’t think of anything that it smells like and I think I like it. We’ll see how it develops – just dabbed it on a few minutes ago.
Angelique Noire grew on me: I’m sure that after my decant is gone I’ll want more.
It’s just about the best vanilla ever on my skin
Continuing in my Natori party all week. I love this plummy goodness.
Also fantasizing about La Fille de Berlin….I really didn’t think I was a rose person, but I might be after all.
I like Natori, too. I’ve had my bottle a year now, and I can see the contents going down. That’s pretty impressive for me–I feel like I will never use anything up. (Except for Mary Greenwell Plum, that is.)
Do you find Mary Greenwell Plum to be related? Another one to try…
Strange, because I don’t even like plums, but the scent of them in perfumes like Feminite du Bois and Natori are wooonderful.
I thought Plum was more about tuberose than plum.
I’m a big Plum fan, and I agree with Omega – not a lot of plum, at least as it is in Natori and FdB, in MG Plum.
Wearing Kenzo Flower Oriental. Oddly, I think it might be more of a summer scent, i.e. more Flower than Oriental.
I’m wearing Shalimar Ode a la Vanille today. I might wear it Friday too because it’s pretty cozy to me.
Also.. I became an aunt yesterday!! My brother and sister-in-law had their baby, just a little early. She was due Jan. 13. So we got a baby for Christmas, a healthy 7lb, 11oz little girl!
Congrats to you and your family! What a beautiful little Christmas gift. 🙂
Congratulations! Being an aunt is so fun 😀
Congrats! Baby For Christmas is pretty awesome. (Be the wacky aunt… every girl needs one.)
Congrats Sweetgrass!:-))
Thanks, everybody! I’m looking forward to spoiling her and then sending her home to her parents. 😉
I have lots of nieces, and that has ALWAYS been my approach. 🙂
I’m in Infusion d’Iris with a dab of Natori. Applied it about 1.5 hours ago, the I’dI is going strong, but Natori is being shy. Time to boldly refresh. The combo got vaguely Chanel-ish for a while.
Ooooooooh…..I have both of those and may try this.
Going to the Mr.’s office holiday party tonight so I’m “bringing it” with a good dose of Journey Woman today. I LOVE this perfume so much. So glad I splurged for a bottle. 🙂
Way to bring it, lady. You smell lovely.
Sotd is Yves Rocher Vanilla Noir. More comfort since guests are arriving today. 🙂
Songes today. Just lovely!
Me, too. So comfy at the end of the day.
Burberry Body Intense. Somehow on me it reminds me of the no.5 Eau pemiere drydown. Pondering aFB request for xmas.
Also, Rose Jam in the shower this morning. Definitely getting myself a back up of that one!
Today, my SOTD is Ades de Venustas’ Oeillet Bengale. It is quite nippy today in Houston, TX (USA), so I thought this scent would be appropriate. The spicy scent just screams winter to me. I love it!
That one is *really* nice.
My daughter’s home from college… younger son is home recuperating from the GI bug he had yesterday and no one else seems to have developed it (yet)… we just watched The Sting* while Girl and I worked on crocheting Christmas presents (yeah, we’re kinda getting down to the wire with these, whoops)… The CEO took Girl to go get our Christmas tree.
Aaaaaaannnnd I’m wearing three spritzes of Eau d’Italie Sienne l’Hiver, powering through the celery bit to get to the cold stone/wood/ incense stuff I like.
* Did NOT know until today that the guy playing “Luther,” Robert Redford’s mentor, was James Earl Jones’ dad! I was looking down and focusing on the rug I was crocheting… and heard that voice… and said, “Wait – is this guy related to JEJ?” imdb.com says yes. How about that? (This is probably common knowledge that I somehow missed…)
Testing in parallel Byredo Black Saffron and Jo Malone Saffron Cologne Intense to see if there is any justification in 40% price difference.
Well I LOVE Black Saffron,regardless of $$$$!
Have you tried Jo Malone’s one?
No I have not! What is your verdict?
How do they compare so far? I really like Jo Malone Saffron, but haven’t tried Byredo Black Saffron.
I like both but – to my nose – they aren’t different enough to have both or to justify spending extra money to get Byredo.
ok ignore above question, just saw your verdict! Will definitely seek out the Malone now!
I wanted to wear a tea-fragrance this morning, and went with Bulgari Au Parfumeė au The Rouge.Fresh and clean smelling,a pretty good summer fragrance! And love the Rooibos tea accord(proudly South African ingredient!)Happy Wednesday NST!
Today I’m trying SL fleurs d’oranger. It’s a pretty plain orangey scent now in the dry down, but earlier it was orange + BO all the way. This one is definitely not going on the buy list! 🙂
I didn’t like that one either.
now you know why i gave it away (sorry!) 🙂
Just feeling worn out and blah! Wore Chanel 31 Rue Cambon dabbed from a sample last night. It smells so incredibly different in the bottle than on skin! There was still a little lingering this AM so I wore Byredo Gypsy Water this morning followed by Histoires de Parfum Ambre 114. I may need a FB of that one. Debating what to wear tomorrow. I have to go to the office and can’t decide if I should be “polite” or not. It will likely be a ghost town, so I won’t offend anyone. But then, I kind of don’t care if I do. I will be there for 2 hours, tops, and in a cube in the boonies…. Hmm…
Snake Charmer by BPAL.
