Tauer Perfumes Advent 2014

Posted by Robin on 1 December 2014 206 Comments — Comments are closed

Tauer Advent tree

December 1st...it's time for the annual Tauer Perfumes Advent calendar! Yes, Tauer is holding 24 days of giveaways for Advent again this year. Why? Because...

It is this time of the year again: Advent, with its warmth and scents bringing back memories from our childhood. It is the time of the year where we prepare for the holidays...

Now Smell This is pleased to host the prize draw for December 1st. Today's winner gets a Tauer Explorer Set, with three 15 ml travel sprays (the winner picks the fragrances).

For a chance to win the December 1st prize, leave a quick comment below telling us your favorite holiday (this holiday, or any holiday) food. If the recipe is short and you are so inclined, feel free to include that too. The very simple rules:

  1. Be sure to use the “Post a comment” box; do not reply to another comment! All replies to comments will be deleted.
  2. Almost anybody, almost anywhere,* can enter, so long as I have permission to use the email address in your reader account to contact you. If the email address in your reader account is incorrect, you might want to fix it.
  3. If you are the winner and you fail to send me your mailing details within a couple weeks, we'll have to pick another winner.

We'll be accepting comments through tomorrow morning (2 December, around 11-am-ish Eastern US time), at which point a winner will be chosen at random. I will announce the winner later in the day. Good luck everyone!

And don't forget, there will be other prizes every single day for the rest of Advent; just check the Advent calendar page every day to find out how and where to enter!

*Tauer Perfumes is no longer able to mail to Italy, Spain, Croatia, Russia or Greece, sorry! (But yes, you are still welcome to enter so long as you can provide a mailing address elsewhere.) And wherever you live, local taxes, VAT, and import fee may apply and are not covered by Tauer. The winner is responsible for making sure that they are allowed to import the prize.

Woho! This is one of the best things with advent! I keep living in hope that some day I will be the lucky winner in a draw here :).

And ofc you have permission to use my e-mail address.

    Happy advent everybody!

I know you can get them year-round now but Marshmallow Peeps are the Easter-iest thing I know of, I only ever buy them at Easter, and they are perversely my favourite holiday food. (Although I like Christmas fruitcake, too. And candy corn at Hallowe’en. It’s as if I only like the things that the Internet seems to hate.)

What an exciting competition! Not sure if it counts as a specific holiday food, but you can’t beat a bit of stilton with crackers at Christmas…mmm….

My favourite food for the holiday, especially Christmas holiday, are some cookies that are filled with walnut cream and topped with chocolate. I don’t think they are exclusive to the winter season, but with some boiled, spiced wine, they are definitely something that gives you energy for going out and play in the snow. I can’t wait for the snow to fall, because that and the smell of warm cookies, is the sign of the ultimate joy this month.
Thanks for the draw! Have a wonderful day!

My favourite holiday food is my family’s Christmas cake, usually made by either by Mum or my sister. It is lovingly fed with brandy over the course of a couple of months and rich with dried fruit and peel and topped with whole almonds.

Please feel free to use my email address!

    Many thanks Robin and Andy!

Delighted to see Andy’s wonderful advent back again. Hmm, favourite food is a tricky one, but I think if I had to choose just one, it would be the bread sauce I make to go with Christmas dinner – the wonderful fragrance of the spices and herbs. And extra special as we only have it at Christmas.

    Good luck to all.

Anything marzipan that I can get my greedy little hands on. Which can be a challenge as it doesn’t seem to be very popular in the US, but the Aldi chain of grocery stores usually has some marzipan chocolates and pastries in around the holidays. In Sweden, we eat pretty much the same stuff every holiday (herring, baked ham, lox, meat balls, cabbage) but of christmas, we have this dessert that is my favourite: ris a la Malta. Its basically cold rice porridge stirred with cream and vanilla. And served with home made strawberry jam. Sounds maybe a bit off, but it is delicious.

I think my favorite holiday food is the fried “filling” (it’s what we call it in PA) that my grandma Mae has always made for thanksgiving and Christmas. It’s so simple but you can totally gorge on it at midnight, cold, with a spoon in the container…ahem. Not that I’ve ever done that, mind you…

Bag of bread cubes (if you can, use Martin’s potato bread bread cubes), 2 cups of diced celery and of diced onion, 1 cup of milk that has one egg beaten into it, 1 stick of butter, salt and pepper. That’s it.

Melt the butter in a very large sauté or frying pan. Add celery and onion, and some salt and pepper. Once the veg is translucent, add the bag of cubes and CAREFULLY start turning them into the buttery veg so all the cubes get coated and start frying. Let them pan fry for about 5-10 min on medium. Add the beaten egg-milk over the entire pan of cubes and QUICKLY stir and coat all the cubes without getting scrambled eggs (it’s kinda like a half assed French toast method here). Let the cubes fry and get drier for another 5-10 minutes. Season again with more s&p and let the cubes get a tiny bit browned and crunchy in some spots. Then just dump in a vessel that you can either store in the fridge or store in the fridge AND reheat in the oven when ready for the meal. I dare you not to become addicted. 😉 happy holidays and THANK YOU to Andy for doing this once again (he is such a sweetheart).

My favorite holiday food is a crab dip appetizer that everyone in my family makes for Thanksgiving and Christmas. You take a block of cream cheese, cover it with canned crab meat, then cocktail sauce over the top. It goes amazingly well with triscuit crackers. Yum!

Easter is my favorite holiday with Xmas as a close second. The scents of orange and cloves, cinnamon and pine trees say Christmas to me.

The Christmas season has begun! Andy is always so wonderful about his advent calendar!

I love all holiday food, but I think decorated sugar cookies are what I look forward to the most.

Here’s the recipe I use ever year and rolling the dough between parchment paper makes the process so easy:

    6 cups flour
    3 tsp. baking powder
    2 cups butter
    2 cups sugar
    2 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla extract or desired flavoring
    1 tsp. salt

Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla. Mix well. Mix dry ingredients and add a little at a time to butter mixture. Mix until flour is completely incorporated and the dough comes together.

Chill for 1 to 2 hours (or see Hint below)

Roll to desired thickness and cut into desired shapes. Bake on ungreased baking sheet at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes or until just beginning to turn brown around the edges. This recipe
can make up to 5-dozen 3” cookies.

HINT: Rolling Out Dough Without the Mess — Rather than wait for your cookie dough to chill, take the freshly made dough and place a glob between two sheets of parchment paper.
Roll it out to the desired thickness then place the dough and paper on a cookie sheet and pop it into the refrigerator. Continue rolling out your dough between sheets of paper until you have used it all. Reroll leftover dough and repeat the process.

This time of year my favourite holiday food is lussekatter and not least modern versions like vanilla-filled lussebullar. Lussekatter or lussebullar are saffron buns made for Lucia Day, but this year I’ve been cheating and buying it since almost mid-November. That’s why I want to try saffron perfumes right now (must find a sample of Safran Troublant).

For christmas I love good old-fashioned christmas ham (julskinka) with eggs and bread. Not that interested in most of the other things on the christmas smörgåsbord (aka julbord), but I must have the ham. Same thing at Midsummer’s eve when I love new potatoes, sourcream (gräddfil) and matjessill (pickled herring) with strawberries in cream for dessert. Almost never cheat and eat it before the holiday, but afterwards I enjoy it several times.

    Now that’s an exciting draw!

Gajjar ka Halwa is the holiday, winter, and otherwise comfort food of choice! (It’s sweet, shredded carrots stewed & stirred slowly in whole milk until reddish-brown, with added spices and roasted nuts)

    What does it smell like?
Cardamom, Saffron, Pistachios, Honey, Iris, Ethyl Maltol, Amber & Vanilla.

    Look it up!

I also prefer Easter over Christmas. I haven’t had potato pancakes over the Holidays but sure do love them! Yum. There was a deli in town and I would always go there just for the potato pancakes…sadly, the place was sold and the potato pancakes were no more:(. But it was like the best deli, ever.

My fave food would probably be stuffing if I really had to narrow it down.

I always make 2 or 3 different kinds – traditional cooked with orange, or a chutney style with dried fruits and fresh cranberries, or this year, one flavored with chipotle chiles. Yum! I live in hope that some day I’ll be chosen for one of Andy’s wonderful prizes…

My favorite holiday food is my mom’s Portuguese sweet bread. She makes it for Thanksgiving and Christmas. It’s been handed down a couple generations and although I’ve not tried my hand at it yet, I will someday. It’s the best bread ever and I love toasting slices of it the next day and putting on some strawberry or fig jam.

My favorite holiday food is a breakfast casserole that we have Christmas morning, it’s a pretty generic recipe that you can find over the Internet. Growing up though I thought it was pretty special because we only had it on Christmas. I also love homemade whole berry cranberry sauce, no one else likes it so all the more for me, it’s excellent warmed and on top of vanilla ice cream! Use my email address, and happy holidays!

Yay, Tauer Advent Calendar is back, lets have some perfume fun in the following 24 days.

What is my favorite holiday? I think that would be Midsummer, it’s celebrated around 21-22 of june. This holiday is a Slavic version of Valentine’s day.

You can use my address of course 😉

My favourite holiday meal is our traditional Christmas Eve dinner, especially the pierogi that we make only once a year. We make ours with potato, cheese, and onion. I love pierogi because they’re delicious, but just as much because our whole family gathers together a few days ahead of time to make them. The assembly line with everyone from little children to seniors is so much fun – although the youngest is not a “little child” anymore – he has learned how to make pierogi so they don’t come apart when they’re boiled!

My favorite holiday food was always stuffing, but alas, I can’t digest bread anymore. Runner-up is an old family recipe for broccoli casserole. I’ll also eat all the toffee you can give me.

    Happy holidays!

Yay, it’s that time of the year already! Once again, massive thanks to Andy and everyone who’s helping him do this.

My favourite Christmas food is probably mince pies, although I’m forbidden from buying and eating them until at least mid-December. Despite my annual good intentions, I’ve yet to try making them myself so sadly no recipe to share.

    Hey Everyone,

So glad this generous Calendar giveaway is back:)!
My favourite holiday is Christmas, partially because of all that lovely food:)! I love Christmas cooking, and baking too, and probably my favourite holiday dish is the Christmas Eve roast duck breast with chestnut and dried plums cooked in red wine. I don’t stuff the bird, just roast them with spices and serve them with this gorgeous caramelized company:).

    Happy Advent to You all:)!

I love homemade pfeffernuesse (little glazed spice cookies), but the recipe is way too complicated to list here. I also always make cranberry sauce, which is very good and very easy: 1.) Put 1 lb. fresh cranberries (washed), 2 cups sugar, 1/2 cup water and 1/8 tsp. salt in a saucepan. 2.) Cover, bring to a boil and cook just until the cranberry skins burst (8-10ish minutes). 3.) Remove from heat. 4.) Stir in spices (1/8 tsp. ground cloves, 1/8 tsp. ground ginger, 1/2 tsp. ground allspice and 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon). 5.) Pour into jars, screw on the lids and allow to cool. Presto = sealed jars of homemade spiced cranberry sauce!

I’m one of the strange few who loves Christmas fruitcake. Not the commercial ones (and especially not with icing!), but the two kinds my mother used to make when I was a child and in later years sent to me in a December care package. One was very, very dark as it included cocoa powder and grape jelly, the other a golden yellow made bright with crushed pineapple, orange zest and almonds.

Wonderful drawing! Where I grew up in Ketchikan, Alaska, lumpia was a staple of 4th of July. The Filipino community is pretty strong there, and for the parades and booths there was always more Filipino food than the barbeque and typical American food you would expect. Which was fine by me, because their food is delicious! I don’t live there anymore but my boyfriend still makes the food from his culture on the 4th – and I always look forward to it.

My favorite holiday is the upcoming one; Christmas! It is truly the most wonderful time of the year! My favorite holiday food isn’t actually a food, but only available during Christmas. It’s eggnog! I wish they would make it year-round! I almost died when I found out that Starbucks discontinued the Eggnog Latte. But after people complained (myself included), they brought it back. So, I love eggnog latte, plain eggnog, spiced eggnog, eggnog any kind of way.

Many words : pecan pie with milk in the recipe, eggnog, boiled custard, candied yams , fresh baked yeast rolls, sausage stuffing with butter and cheddar, huge pats of butter, fudge ( made some by myself for the first time this year ! And it turned out pretty well too. Carnation kit at Walmart , and I went slightly heavy on the butter….) looking forward to my grandma’s Peanut Butter Balls and her fudge with walnuts! Mmmmmm ! (Must ! Not ! Drool . On . The . Ipad!)
    Merry Christmas everyone!

Thanks Robin & Andy. I always look forward to the Advent calendar 🙂
My favorite food is sufganiyot- oil fried yeast doughnuts that are hand filled with jam and covered in powdered sugar. Yum!

Apple pie. For Christmas. For Thanksgiving. Any holiday at all. For no reason at all. Home made butter crust and tart granny smith apples and only about half the sugar of most apple pie recipes. Yummy.

Here in Australia at Christmas time it’s hot so it’s all about salads and seafood, Christmas Eve cocktails with family and friends at my parents house is also a tradition. Wonderful giveaway, thank you!

The first thing I thought of was tamales and beans for breakfast on Christmas morning but I’m a fan of many, many holiday foods.
We had one of the best and most simple salads during the Thanksgiving madness when supplies were running low and I thought I’d share the recipe; chopped broccoli and cauliflower, raisins, and a little mayonnaise thinned with orange juice as dressing. You wouldn’t believe how good this was. Happy holidays to all!

So hard to choose a favorite holiday food. Buche de Noel filled with chestnut cream and covered in chocolate ganache? Cranberry walnut upside down cake? Silky slivers of smoked salmon on brown bread and butter with a generous squeeze of lemon? No, I think creamed onions are my favorite. Not onions boiled in milk, but caramelized in butter with nutmeg, fresh thyme and bay, then simmered in chicken stock and finished with a bit of heavy cream. Yum.

Please enter me in the drawing, and yes you may use my email. Thanks.

My favorite holiday treat is one I make throughout the winter – Sweet, spicy and salty mixed nuts with rosemary. I caramelize the nuts with butter, brown and white sugar, and add chopped rosemary and cayenne pepper. It’s nice to cool the fire with champagne or a dry martini! Thanks for the draw!

Favorite holiday food — lebkuchen oblaten — soft, sugar-glazed gingerbread baked on a wafer cookie. I only eat these at the holidays to keep them special.

And chocolate truffles rolled in cocoa powder are reserved for holiday indulgence, too.

Thanks for hosting the first day of the Tauer Advent event. I’m always amazed by Andy’s generosity!

Wow, this is always so much fun, thanks Andy and NST! 🙂

My favorite holiday food is probably stuffing if I am honest – yes, I love the chocolates and the pastries and the eggnog and the other fancy treats, but just give me a big old bowl of traditional stuffing and I’m good!

This question reminds me of the things I’m going to miss again this year–in addition to pumpkin pie, my mother’s sugar cookies (the secret ingredient is orange rind).

Thank you Andy and Robin! Please feel free to use my email.

It’s difficult to narrow down all of the sweet and savory holiday temptations, but my favorite is probably homemade cookies such as gingerbread or decorated sugar cookies. They can be a bit time consuming to make, but the process can take on a meditative quality and allow you to quietly focus on just one thing.

My favourite holiday food is the baby Jesus buns that we make, from a recipe handed down by a Belgian great uncle. They are a yeasted white flour + egg dough, shaped into a swaddled baby Jesus by attaching a small round ball onto a longer, fatter oval. I’ve had friends tell me that it’s kind of creepy, but it’s not Christmas without baby Jesus buns.

And definitely, you have permission to use my email address to contact me. Thanks 🙂

Thank you to Andy for sponsoring this generous drawing!

My favorite holiday-esque food is tamales! Wherever we happen to get together for Christmas that year, we gather the family/friends and assemble the tamales all together at the table. So besides being delicious, the process is fun and memorable 🙂

Something ”weird” that we eat here in Sweden both on Christmas Eve and Midsummer Eve is pickled herring – it’s not Christmas if you don’t eat creamy mustard herring together with boiled potatoes and “vörtbröd” (bread flavored with wort) – the only difference is that you eat crispbread on Midsummer’s Eve!

Just in time, I hope. I’d have to vote for the traditional Christmas fruit. cake. Too many ingredients to give here, but suffice to say that the cupboard where I’m keeping it smells divinely of fruit and booze.
I’m in Spain, but can give a UK address. Thanks for the giveaway!

Another generous year of Andy doing the Advent giveaways. I love sweets so my favorite foods are around Christmas because of all the cakes, pies, cookies, etc…

Thanks again for the contest and hopefully this year I’ll win one.

I love the Advent calendar — Andy is so generous each year! Thanks for hosting!

My favourite holiday food is Chex Mix (homemade, of course) — I know that’s a bit strange but we make it at every major family holiday and it’s the only time of the year I’ll let myself eat it (so addictive!).
