Thierry Mugler Les Exceptions ~ new fragrances

Posted by Robin on 29 April 2014 30 Comments

Thierry Mugler Les Exceptions

Thierry Mugler will launch Les Exceptions / Mugler's Exceptions, a new collection of five fragrances: Chyprissime, Supra Floral, Fougère Furieuse, Over The Musk and Oriental Express.

Daring, breathtaking, addictive, noble...a new dimension in the fragrance universe, Designer Perfume. A collection of unique creations and original alchemies, crafted around the major themes of traditional perfumery.

The quintessence of MUGLER's expertise, the experience of a unique sensation, for lovers of the finest perfumes.

[...]

Fragrances based on floral, chypre, musk, oriental and fern accents...MUGLER's Exceptions reinterpret these great blends of fine perfumery, transporting them into the future with overdosed ingredients and original notes.

The fragrances were developed by perfumers Jean-Christophe Hérault and Olivier Polge.

The Thierry Mugler Les Exceptions fragrances will be available in 80 ml refillable bottles; I will update with individual fragrance descriptions when I can.

(quote via int.mugler, additional information via realstylenetwork)

Update ~

Les Exceptions are available in Eau de Parfum, CAD $185 for the 80 ml and CAD $127 for the refill.

Chyprissime ~ with bergamot, oak moss, cistus labdanum, patchouli and pear.

Supra Floral ~ with hyacinth, amber and oud.

Fougère Furieuse ~ with notes of geranium, oak moss, bergamot, coumarin, amber and neroli.

Over the Musk ~ with ambrette seed and musk.

Oriental Express ~ with bergamot, sandalwood, vanilla, 'carrot core' and carrot seed.

Another update: Les Exceptions will launch in September at three Nordstrom locations: Miami Aventura, LA South Coast Plaza and Chicago Michigan Avenue. The US price is $225.

The bottles look nice & I like the names! Hope these are not as limited distribution as the Mirror series, but sort of guessing they will be. We’ll see.

They have officially been launched this past Friday and they are only available in Canada; Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. There are 4 locations and they will expand to a maximum of 14 internationally. The fragrances smell very refined. You have to withdraw the image of what Mugler fragrances have been this far. They are nothing as confrontationally loud as the predecessors. They are elegant, befitting of all, somewhat unusual and have their own essence of power behind them through the structured concept. What they did is took classic olfactory families and stripped them to the core, then brought in an ingredient that is not normally used in that family group, to give it an unusual twist, but they smell very refined, smooth and classy. I want to compare them to the Mugler power suit; hemmed to perfection to the individuals body, but with the Mugler winged shoulders as the twist.

When you experience these fragrances, you have to have time to sit down and enjoy them. They need to be presented properly.

The initial cost is $185 Canadian and the refill is $127 Canadian.

They don’t want to focus on the ingredients as much as they want you to dream and be reminded of things. Naming the ingredients just kills the dream behind each fragrance. There’s no mystery. I can give you an analogy of what I mean if you like.

The bottles are Art Deco inspired, which Mugler is known for.

I have read up on fragrances from Thierry Mugler including “Angel” and have heard nothing but good things about their fragrances. I would like to try one of these fragrances to see what they are like. I agree with cologneluvr. The bottles are very appealing.

Oh, do try some of the line. Everyone should try Angel & A*Men, and I’m a big fan of Mugler Cologne as well.

ALL of Mugler’s offerings are AWESOME!!!

However, as of lately, I’ve read A LOT, that A*Men has been reformulated and that it DOES NOT have the same monster silage or longevity as past iterations; I want a new bottle of A*Men but afraid of spending the $$$ on a fb if it isn’t the same…hmmm, any thoughts?

I seriously doubt that there is any fragrance as old as A*Men that hasn’t been reformulated more than once. I have not smelled a new bottle recently, but my advice would be to never replace an old fragrance, ever, until you smell a fresh tester.

Is there any indication of the release date?
This is the first big fragrance release I get to experience as a budding perfumista. I will be marking my calendar!

Pretty sure they’re already out in Canada, and possibly in Italy. I’m afraid I don’t know when they launch worldwide.

“Canada exclusive” is not a term you hear very often! I live in Vancouver and will be looking for these! I assume they’re at Holt Renfrew?

Hudson’s Bay exclusive. The Bay is also the only retailer nationally that carries Mugler fashions. They have a huge partnership with Hudson’s Bay. Angel was exclusive to them up until 3 years ago.

It’s because Canada has the most loyal Muglerians and that’s why they get it first 😉

Holts is the last place these days to go for beauty and fashion; just saying

Talk to me! I’m not crazy about Holts. Will be venturing forth to the downtown Bay this weekend. Thanks for the info 🙂

I’v not had a chance to smell Mugler’s cologne, but I have been preferring some of his later creations: Alien Absolue is nice, and Alien Extrordinaire not bad; of the two in the Miroir series that I managed to smell, I liked one. They may have been revolutionary classics but I definitely do not like the original Angel, Alien or even Womanity. I think some of the later flankers e.g. Pure havane are more refined. So, high hopes for these!

Ooh, interesting. I loved the Mirror, Mirror series — I thought they were sophisticated and unusual. I own one from that series. Hope I’ll have a chance to sniff these if/when they come to the US!

I hope these are eventually available as a coffret of hmmmm, 5-10 mLs each. The bottles look nice – they have the same shape as the new Caron but the mirrored finish makes these more elegant.

As to Thierry Mugler, I just tried the Angel Eau Sucree and I really like it!

As much feedback as I’ve heard from people, many have said that they want to see a coffret of mini’s, but as to the feeling I’m getting from them, I highly doubt that will happen from their end. The only way they’ll do it is if enough people message them to their head office, which they do listen to their customers, but there has to be a large enough demand for that. The only thing is, they’re looking to stop doing limited editions and kitschy stuff. They want to bring back the prestige of what Mugler really represents, thus the launch of Les Exceptions. I want to compare them to how Creed, Tom Ford private collection, Chanel exclusives and other fragrances along those lines are treated. The way they come are beautiful though, not just the bottle, but the presentation in store/packaging.

There was rumors though that they might do a promo with minis, but that’s just rumors. You never know really, but I’d like to see a mini coffret, where the customer could come back and get a full size bottle for free. Would be great for Christmas.

Oh that would be great. Even a discount on a FB would be great. Some niche sellers do this kind of thing already I think.

Bottles are lovely, identical to the Molton Brown ‘navigation’ series they did. Damn those fingerprints on the polished silver though!

I live in Montreal and got to smell these at the launch. Fell in love with Oriental Express and may go back and get Over the Musk too – they sold out of it within hours on launch day here! A beautiful solid bottle and great quality scents.

I had the chance to get the -well rehearsed- presentation by the Toronto SA yesterday, who pointed out at least 3 times that M. Mugler was no longer involved in the creative aspect of the line.

I managed to get 3 samples! Wow!

Chyprissime is the only one I’ve tested on skin yet. It smells great on paper. I so wanted to LOVE it. But 6 generous spray on skin lasted a whole 5 minutes.

Fougère Furieuse reminds me very much of Guerlain’s Habit Rouge. It has a classy old world charm.

Over The Musk is my least favorite. Granted I’m not a huge fan of musk based fragrances. It felt flat and missing something.

Supra Floral was a very nice surprise. The Hyacinth is bright and lively. I can’t wait to try it on.

Oriental Express is like the love child of Coromandel and Dior Homme, but with an even better iris note and a hint of smoke.

    It’s a great collection but I might not actually need it… might…

Heard the same of Chyprisssime on FB yesterday. Too bad! I am hanging my hopes on the Supra Floral, although in the US will probably be Saks only so I may never try it 🙂

        Yes, from me! Lol
        Wearing Oriental Express now.
Forget my Coromandel/Dior Homme comment. Again, this one is different than what it was on paper. On skin, this also has a Guerlain, almost Shalimar-like vibe. The iris turns powdery. While the SA claimed that this one was the most masculine of the collection, it has no real masculine vibe.
        A like, not a love
