Sometimes it's a treat to wander the length of a fragrance counter or a boutique that offers dozens of perfume lines. At other times, you just want to experience a single fragrance house without any rush or distraction. Atelier Cologne's fragrances are available at other locations in New York (including Bergdorf Goodman and Aedes de Venustas), but if you have the time, the company's Nolita boutique is well worth a visit.
The shop is decorated in a very downtown, loft-chic style, with bare wood floors, exposed-brick walls, and repurposed industrial furnishings. The full Atelier line is available, with most fragrances offered in three sizes, as well as hefty bars of soap and candles in deep aubergine glass containers. The coffret sets would make memorable gifts. Each fragrance has its own mini-display, with the bottles surrounded by small objects that evoke their "stories."
Whether or not you are already familiar with Atelier Cologne, the boutique's staff are welcoming but not pushy. They know everything there is to know about the brand and its products, and they're skilled at making recommendations; even if you already own an Atelier fragrance or two, you may find a new favorite. And if there's a not-yet-released fragrance waiting in the wings, you may be offered a preview sniff from an advance tester bottle.
Best sellers: Bois Blonds and Rose Anonyme.
Not to be missed: Atelier's 30 ml atomizers are offered with leather travel cases; after you make a selection from seven available colors, you can have your case stamped with your name or initials.
