Nice video. I liked the statement “perfume is the accesory of style” and I don’t like fruity fruity fruity at all.
I don’t like fruity, fruity, fruity either. I don’t mind a touch of fruit but the whole trend of smelling like a fruit cocktail is just not for me. I guess I’m just getting old.
Actually I’m not very keen on fruity or edible fragrances, I’ve never been. There are many different scents that rock my world.
I just found out that JPG Kokorico should arrive to my Douglas perfumery this or next week! Yuppie! Can’t wait to sample it!
Ditto. And love your pic. 🙂
The fruity part is esp. interesting in conjunction with the new Bvlgari Omnia Coral — Bvlgari’s first fruity floral, which he did. And did nicely, although I don’t love it.
Interesting that he equates fruity with ‘artificial’.
I especially enjoyed seeing his own labs. Often these sorts of interviews just have the perfumer sitting at an ordinary desk with a few vials distributed elegantly around. Not very convincing. Rather fruity.
It’s a nice piece. I assume it was done in support of Belle d’Opium, but hard to tell — they really only mention it twice.
Such a touching interview. I really like him, and his take on sweet and fruity.
Looking at the long list of his fragrant achievements, I noticed that I do not own any of his perfumes, except a bottle of Armani White – a gift from I received from my mother many years ago.
I have been forever curious about trying Byzance and Vanille 44, though.
I smiled at his pride and amazement in front of “the machine”. Sweet.
🙂
It’s an intetersting list isn’t it? Includes everything from Avon to Le Labo. It’s also interesting that he often works collaboratively.
He seems very likable! His list of creations is huge. I do own Thierry Mugler Cologne & Bvlgari Omnia, and have decants of YSL M7, and there are several others I *wish* I owned!
Zazie, I could send you a sample of Byzance if it is not readily available where you are. PM me if you are interested!
The only fruity I can do is 1804… most others give me deja vu of high school gym lockers and Bath & Body Works, even most of the ones that are done relatively well.
I lie. There’s also Amaranthine and Bigarade Concentree… but it seems insulting to even describe them as fruity 😛
I’d agree: not fruity. That is, they may contain fruity notes, but smell like real fruit as opposed to artificial froot flavoring, and the scents aren’t ABOUT the fruit.
I have my share of fruity florals! But most of my favorite fruity florals, admittedly, are niche. I would own Prescriptives Calyx if it didn’t spoil so fast though.
What are some of the niche fruity florals that you like? I guess I associate the fruity floral category mostly with cheap celebuscents.
PdN Eau Exotique, which unfortunately got replaced with Eau Turquoise, and L’Artisan Ananas Fizz are 2 I own. I would own Byredo Pulp if I could afford it, and I usually have a decant of Annick Goutal Folavril on hand.
I like Calyx too and don’t own it for the same reason. I don’t think of that as fruity. It’s those super sweet, mass market, fruity florals that I can’t stand.
Very nice!
I enjoyed this video.
He seems very a very affable man. (I cannot think of other adjective to describe him)
That one fits! (although no idea what he’s like in real life)
You’re absolutely right, Kaos!
Thanks for posting this, Robin. It was fascinating, for all the reasons everyone mentioned above.
Thanks for posting the video. It actually made me a fan of Alberto now. 🙂
I remember liking Byredo’s Pulp – there was this nice green note that kept the fruity notes from getting too fruity.
That was a reply to Robin’s comment about owning her share of fruity florals 🙂
He seems like a very nice person indeed and I love his French accent when he speaks English 🙂 And as a big fan of gourmand scents, I completely agree on what he said about fruity fragrances.
I enjoyed these very much, not least his room of robots! He was indeed very affable and approachable, and his slight glitch with the door release button at the end of the second vid endeared him to me even further!
It struck me that a couple of newer niche releases – Vero Profumo Rubj and Neela Vermeire Bombay Bling are incredibly fruity. In the case of Bombay Bling I would go so far as to describe it as “aggravated fruit”. Is niche getting all fruity too I wonder?
I meant to add that I do like both those scents, especially Rubj, and Bombay Bling in its later stages when some of the fruity bling has worn off. : – )
