Happy Thanksgiving 2011 ~ open thread

Posted by Robin on 24 November 2011 130 Comments

fork!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone who is celebrating today!

Whether you’re celebrating or not, feel free to talk about anything you like: what fragrance you're wearing today, what you're going to eat for dinner, what you're planning to buy on Black Friday...whatever you like, so long as it doesn't conflict with our comment policy.

I will answer what comments I can, but am cooking today so probably won't be able to keep up.

We Canadians had our Thanksgiving over a month ago, but happy Thanksgiving to all you Americans.

Since we had our first real snowfall yesterday, I thought I needed something warm, so today I’m wearing Serge Lutens La Myrrhe for the first time (I ordered pretty well all the exports from The Perfumed Court last month), and it is gorgeous. His hits greatly outnumber his misses for me: I can’t think of another house or perfumer that on the whole works so perfectly for me.

I always have thought that the Canadian Thanksgiving was on a much more sensible date than the American one.

        Thank you from a Canadian.
My SOTD is Kenzo Amour. Now I don’t like vanilla or orientals but this one is so warm and well-blended that I actually can wear it. It’s light and pleasant and appropriate for a blustery day.

I’m pretty much the opposite and it’s very rare for me to find a Lutens that I really love but La Myrrhe is one of those that I’m dying to try since it sounds incredible.

I’ve found La Myrrhe to be an outlier on the Serge-o-meter. It’s not that I dislike all that many of the SLs, but so far I only love one – and it’s La Myrrhe.

    HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!!

I will be wearing Jaipur Homme by Boucheron. This is one of my favorite fragrances…I have both concentrations, Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum; each are special and have a different aroma to them. The Toilette is woodsier and a bit more pungent, however, the longevity of the Parfum is longer and it is softer albeit, a tad more spicier. There is a difference between stronger and spicier…I love both concentrations; they each have a purpose depending on occasion.

Happy Thanksgiving, everybody! i don’t know yet what I’m going to be eating because we are going out to a restaurant, so it will be whatever I decide to order. I will probably wear Ormonde Woman, as it is one of my very favorites and just seems to go well with the cooler fall weather, although I wear it year round. As for Black Friday–I won’t be buying anything in particular, as I already finished my Christmas shopping, and even have most of it wrapped.

I ordered Ormonde Woman from London a couple of weeks ago and boy, do I love this scent! In an interview Linda once said that she would never ever allow her scents to be altered so I’m hopeful for the future. SOTD: Bottega Veneta. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you in the US!

I totally agree about Ormonde Woman being so perfect for this time of year! It is what I was thinking of wearing, too. My other thought, totally on the other side of the spectrum, was Givenchy Ange ou Demon Le Secret, which I bought last Christmas and Dad really liked it on me. Since he’s hosting Thanksgiving and it has that cranberry note, it also seems appropriate. . .but I think I want the richer OW.

    Wearing Vetyverio today.
My husband has baked a cranapple mince pie – liberally dosed with Jack Daniels. He’s also made some pumpkin pie-ettes with the pumpkin he used to brew his pumpkin ale. I know I will be eating these today along with the turkey and other things his family makes.
I will not shop on Black Friday but I look forward to Small Saturday and Cyber Monday.
    Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Yes, I was watching footage from a stampede in Best Buy from last year’s Black Friday, and a pitiful shake of my head is all that it warranted.
I would never, ever willingly participate in that kind of craziness; I mean, I know people like to shop and get the bargains, but I think it just perpetrates the stereotypical insanity of the season. It’s no wonder people get so tired long before Christams is actually here.

Oh my – Jack Daniels-cranapple-mince pie sounds like something I need to learn how to make as soon as possible!

Actually, come to think of it, whisky + cranapple + mince might make a good perfume, too. Maybe with some leather thrown in to tone down the foodiness?

With the leather thrown in it sounds like something I would love to wear – and no pink pepper, oud or frosted anything! Yes, I know oud can be lovely….

Am wearing Chanel Allure, as it’s my go to comfort fragrance which seemed appropriate on Thanksgiving.

He uses Nonsuch Mincemeat – the condensed kind in the little box – no actual meat in it. It’s sometimes hard to find – you might have to go to a supermarket in a neighborhood where the demographics skew toward senior citizens…Anyway, he adds dried cranberries and Ida Red apples to the reconstituting process and then throws in a nice slug of whiskey. You don’t want to add the whiskey too soon or all the alcohol cooks out of it…
and I agree, the combination might make an excellent fragrance.

HA! That is exactly why I made a Chinese style pork belly to go with our turkey today- bacon and (all it’s forms) rules! : ) We decided next year to make two pork bellies and one less turkey.

I wore a dab of my first loves’ scent today…he wore Bayrum. Still love it!, even on me.

My perfume today is Passage d’Enfer. On the menu today: Turkey with rosemary-maple butter, chestnut stuffing, mashed sweet potatoes, homemade cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie.

The navy blue belted Esprit coat I’ve wanted for a while is now 40% off, so that was my early Black Friday purchase. :)

As mentioned above, I’m still deciding on my SOTD.

Yesterday was my birthday, and my fabulous teaching team got me a gift certificate for The Perfume House. Poor me, now I have to come up with something to buy. . . ;)

Oh, and super funny, the social studies teacher who went to go get the gift certificate, and has little to no experience with “good” perfumes said she had gone into it thinking she’d choose something for me! She said she was so overwhelmed, she had to “just get a gift card.” I tried to reassure her that this was THE BEST way to do it!

Oh, and shall I share one of my favorite Thanksgiving stories?

Several years ago, I used my extra day off to get my car looked over by my little mechanics shop. “My guy” informed me that he hadn’t celebrated Thanksgiving the day before since he had to be in the hospital. His brother was sick, and they were still figuring out what was going on. My mechanic looked tired and worried (and he’s a rather hefty fellow, who looks like he could really enjoy a Thanksgiving feast!).

So I walked home while my car was being looked over and told my SO about it. We agreed that it wasn’t right for him to miss Thanksgiving, so I put together a large tupperware with leftovers and some birthday cake. I brought it back when I went to pick up my car and gave it to him.

Now, years later, he still brings it up, points me out to other guys at the shop as “the lady who brought him Thanksgiving dinner,” and, bonus, I keep getting generous discounts on my car care!

Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate and Happy Thursday to all who don’t.

SOTD is a reapplication of last night’s samples: Coco EDP inside one arm and Coco Extrait inside the other, both (scents, not arms) courtesy of TPC. Interestingly, the EDP seems to be stronger and spicier and to last longer while the parfum seems lighter, smoother and a bit lemony. I’d love to hear your experiences of these two.

I’ve really been enjoying playing with spicy, ambery, woody, orientalish frags as the weather gets cool, including Parfum Sacre, Tabac Blond, Ambre Sultan, Ambre Russe (Parfum d’Empire), Ambra de Nepal(I Profumi di Firenze), Yatagan and OJ Woman. Fall is beautiful here in central NC and although we’ve had a few freezes, it’s still often in the mid-60s during the day.

No Thanksgiving plans per se: Dr. E is sick and in no position to help and, much as I love the traditional favorites – and the supermarket is still open for a few hours – I’m tired from taking care of Dr. E and in no mood to shop for and cook a big meal. OTOH, I may just curl up on the sofa with a good book and maybe take a nap – definitely worth some thankfulness and gratitude!

Happy Thanksgiving, all! We’re having a turkey-off with friends, so hubby is smoking and deep frying a turkey, we’ll see what they come up with. I just made 2 trays of homemade apple sausage stuffing, cranberry ginger sauce, sweet potatoes with lemon and pecans, real green bean casserole with caramelized onions, bacon, and cream sauce, a pumpkin pie. I still have to make mashed potatoes, whipped cream, and gravy. The scent for all this? Bond #9 Andy Warhol Lexington Ave for its nutmeginess. I really wanted to wear something that I’m truly grateful for (Ibitira by Xerjoff) but knew I wouldn’t be able to wear it with all the cooking going on.

Wishing everyone on the board a great holiday! I hope everyone, celebrating or not, has something or someone to be grateful for.

Black Friday: uggggh. I’m not going there this year. Too dangerous :)

It is unseasonably warm here in the eastern Sierra, and so my plan to wear ELO Like This seems wrong now. So I haven’t picked a scent yet. I am off the hook for cooking today and probably every year till my mother literally can’t see anymore — she always wants to do everything. I am in charge of the wine. Hmm. I’d wear Genestet Sauvingnonne or Fresh Citron de Vigne if either one had any lasting power.

SOTD is Theorema. Still lemming on Plum and doing my best to dissuade myself from any other blind buys(no matter how “good” the deal). The culprit to blame is the reformulated Shalimar in edp… my nose searing citrus and lovely round vanilla are gone, all I can smell are slightly sour handy-wipes. The vintage rabbit-hole is beckoning!

There is a LOT of vintage Shalimar on ebay, so it’s still pretty reasonable. Resistance is illogical!

Ohhh, enabler! It’s not just the Shalimar, there’s also Infini, Ma Griffe, Givenchy III, Rive Gauche, Coriandre, Metal, etc etc. I’m really trying hard to resist because from there it’s just a short jump to buying up all the vintage Diorissimo in sight, lol.

Buy it now buttons are both a curse and a blessing! :)

Today I had some yummy broccoli and cheese souffle, mashed pots w/butter, chicken-free stuffing, corn, and a big helping of turnips. Everyone else had their turkey and meat based stuffing (I’m a vegetarian). It was really nice of my family to make some dishes that fit my veghead requirements.

Not wearing anything today, but I’m trying to figure out what I’ll wear to work tomorrow. I konw our restaurant will be busy on Black Friday. Maybe I’ll put on my With love from HD, or maybe Fergie’s Avon scent, I haven’t worn that yet. Altho I do have some Bond St. and Jo Malone samples that i received form a recent visit to NYC. The Saks 5th Ave. Woman and The Harrods something Amber were standouts when I went a-sniffing.

I am one naturalized american, who is celebrating Thanksgiving . We are going to eat turkey, traditional stuffing, mashed potatoes and green salad. No perfume yet, as I am still cooking, but I am going to wear Lyric later.

I may take advantage of Black Friday to buy only the sweater-coat for myself, that I saw at Anthropologie.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Thankfully I HAD brought my coupon and they had their Black Friday sale starting on Wednesday (except for the doorbusters and on sale on certain hour items).

    SOTD = Tabac Aurea.

Several weeks ago, I was asked to work “November 25th.” It didn’t occur to me when I said yes that November 25th was the day after Thanksgiving. So when we had the opportunity to fly up to NY where Mr. Aparatchick’s family lives, I had to pass it up. Today he’s in NY and I’m here in Florida. I told him to go and that I’d be just fine by myself. So I’ve spent today watching a marathon of Lost on DVD, and I’ve just made myself a turkey with cranberry & creamcheese on whole wheat sandwich. And I’ve had this song (by Irvin Berlin) running through my head today:

    Got no diamond
    Got no pearl
    Still I think I’m a lucky girl
I got the sun in the morning and the moon at night
I got the sun in the morning and the moon at night
    Got no mansion
    Got no yacht
Still I’m happy with what I got
I got the sun in the morning and the moon at night
I got the sun in the morning and the moon at night

May you all enjoy the sun and the moon too! :-)

Oh, what was I thinking? I worked a full day yesterday (that’s 7 to 6 for me) came home and baked a pound cake (thanks to the fluted pan, it wasn’t cool enough to put up until around 2 am) got up this morning to do the caramel at about 7 (had forgotten to set the ingrediendts out so they came to room temp) made the caramel at around 11 (I like it cold in here!) but was too paranoid to nap. Went to my mom’s for dinner at 2 pm (I have to help. I never intend to, but the second I step in her door, I get the “could you just” knell of doom.) Then from there we went to visit an ill cousin who’s kids are down to see him. Got home…er, about 7. *yawn* And as I haven’t had a day off since June, I have to go shopping tomorrow, I need winter clothes and snow boots! Hah! Long weekend my butt!

Wore Pacifica Spanish Amber today. Spanish Amber does not mix well with garlic, shallot, thai chillis and turkey.

Too keyed up to sleep now, but have on more Spanish Amber and a little of the Tibetan Mountain Temple. I may wear Avalon Juniper tomorrow.

Good news though, the cake got INHALED! I’ve never seen one of my cakes dissapear like that, even the sour cream triple-chocolate layer cake they rave about and beg for every Mother’s Day.

Visited the Museum of the American Indian today and enjoyed a special exhibit, “A Song for the Horse Nation – Horses in Naive American Cultures,” as well the Museum’s wonderful, Zagat-rated cafeteria Mitsitam.

Every now and then I test disparate perfumes that happen to work well together. This evening it was the new PG Indochine on one wrist and vintage Schiaparelli Shocking extrait on the other. I am contemplating a bottle of Indochine.

Thanks to Robin and all NST contributors and commenters for another wise and witty year of perfume fun!

A day late, but I hope all the Americans had a wonderful day yesterday. I miss my American friends at this time of year. When I lived in the US, I was adopted into various families for Thanksgiving and enjoyed feasting and festivities.

My SOTD …….. will be a mixture of many different citruses as I am going for sniffing expedition. What are people’s favourite citrus fragrances?!?!? So far, mine is Bigarade Concentree and Zagara from Santa Maria Novella (I have yet to smell loads more, so these top two could chance by the end of today………)

I’m still looking for a replacement for my beloved, yet discontinued, Velvet Tuberose. During a Black Friday sale I recently came back from, I had tested Juicy Couture original, hoping for a Tuberose match. But, it turned on my skin. My cousin was able to point that out and he doesn’t know fragrance. I’m hoping that my unopened Fragile will be a good match (it’s more powdery).

I would like some suggestions on some good Tuberose fragrances that are still in stock that I may purchase.

    Thank you in advance.

I had a good Thanksgiving. My cousin (same one) made a delicious pumpkin cheesecake. Forget the turkey! It’s all about the pumpkin cheesecake! Yum… :)

      (Love pumpkin cheesecake!)

Are you talking about the Bath & Body Works Velvet Tuberose? It is fairly nice – I didn’t realize it was discontinued. I have quite a stash of the body products, as well as a half-full bottle that I seem not to be wearing much these days. I had a peek at ebay, and there are 20+ bottles available there, if you want to go that route.

The Juicy Couture is waaay fruitier up top and lacks the Cashmeran base, so it isn’t much like VT. Fragile I’ve not smelled. I COULD suggest a buncha tuberose scents, but (sadly) they are mostly niche and expensive things.

Wait, have you tried that Kim Kardashian thing? That one’s supposed to be a tuberose scent.

I am late to the party but have enjoyed reading all of the stories and scent and shopping ideas. Yesterday I went out for Thanksgiving dinner with a friend and decided to wear L’artisan Premier Figuier. It has a nice enveloping quality and I felt it would go well with the meal which I believe it did. Even had some leftovers and so late last night I shared out the turkey with all of my cats and enjoyed the green bean casserole, my fave. For today I was not planning to go to any stores or malls, but both the Museum gift shop here in Houston and my favorite “arty” jewelry store (Charde) are having 20% off sales and so I may have to go check those out. You know the Christmas shopping strategy: one gift for them, one gift for me! Ha!
I have also gotten onto a sandalwood kick lately and just ordered a big selection of untested ones from Luckyscent, in search of the perfect sandalwood fragrance. Sandalwood seems like a good winter fragrance at least when winter just means it’s 70 out and not 90!

Which sandalwood scents did you decide to test? I am also still on the hunt for a more complex “wintery” scent. I did recently order the new Hermes one and am waiting for it to arrive. On a different note, have you heard anything about the King Tut exhibit at the Natural Science Museum? I am thinking of going but the $30 price tag makes me hesitate.

King Tut is at the Museum of Fine Arts, not the Science Museum. I have heard from several people that it is fantastic and has so much in it that it’s even worth several visits. I haven’t gone yet myself as I’m waiting for my mom to be in town so we can go together. I am a member and so I was told the admission price is cheaper though still up in the $20 range.

The ones I ordered are as follows
        Profumum Santalum

        Le Labo :Santal 33

        Keiko Mecheri Bois de Santal

Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier Santal Noble

I already have some such as SL Santal Blanc. I’ve tried Santal de Mysore and Tam Dao and love both of those, though one is a little too sweet and the other a little too dry. Any further suggestions would be most welcome.

Well, there’s the granddaddy of sandalwood scents – Bois des Îles. Also SSS Champagne de Bois and the new Tom Ford Santal Blush. There’s not much sandalwood in Hermes Santal Massoia so I wouldn’t rush to try it if that’s what you are after.

    Okay I have two questions…

I’m putting my summer fragrances in the fridge for the winter. Is this okay?

Also, it’s become clear to me that woody creamy scents are my favourite, and I wonder what people’s favourites are, preferably the cheap and cheerful kinds, as I’ve completely overextended my perfume budget for this year and the next. I’m loving SSS Fig Tree, various Kenzos, and Bvlgari Omnia. Robin if you read this I’d love to know your faves as I believe you’re predisposed to the woody creamy frags too.

Have you tried EL Sensuous? Creamy woods, easily accessible and not hugely expensive. Oh and I’m pretty sure Robin owns a bottle :D

It’s a little pricier but I also really like Jo Malone Dark Amber And Gingerlily which used to be a limited edition but is now a part of Cologne Intense line up. Unfortunately it also means that it’s only available in 100ml now.

Separately, hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!! It was my bday yesterday also, but we are celebrating tomorrow….the one thing I asked for was Le Labo Gaiac 10! To be split by various family members, of course, since even the small bottle is outrageously expensive ;-) Almost wish I had never ordered the luckyscent city-exclusive samples! But can’t wait to wear that one again, would be perfect today.

        Have a great weekend all!!

Thanks!! Hmmm….I am terrible at describing scents. For me, it makes me feel serene and somewhat contemplative….I also very sexy in it, but in a quietly sophisticated, intelligent way if that makes any sense. I heard a lot of comparisons to Kyoto, so I got a sample of that to check- and while they are very similar in that they are both pure woods scents, Kyoto is much more harsh and screechy (is that a word??) on my skin. Have you smelled that one? Gaiac 10 is much softer and a touch more feminine to my nose, and just really beautiful. With one spray i can catch whispers of it all day long, so it definitely has good silage- just not much throw, i think people have to practically nuzzle you to smell it. I don’t care though, just love how it makes me feel. I would definitely try it, especially if you like woodsy scents! Unless you want to avoid the temptation for the price :-)

Oh, interesting: I walked past the EL counter today and did spray some on my coat (I was already wearing Smell of Freedom on my skin), and it does really very beautiful. I tried Sensuous on my skin a few months ago in the summer heat, and I dismissed it because I detected a sour note. Maybe I’ll work for me in winter. Thanks!

I may try to get a sample of Le Labo; I’ve heard amazing things.

The Osmotheque in Paris stores their fragrances refrigerated at 53 degrees, which is warmer than the standard refrigerator. I have one of those mini-fridges and at the warmest setting it’s about 48 degrees. As it is cold and dark, I think it is the best storage possible without having a wine refrigerator-type unit.

Happy Friday everyone!!! Didn’t log on yesterday, but have enjoyed catching up on the comments. Yesterday I went to a friends house for dinner. She prepared the majority of the meal, but each guest also brought an item. My contribution was Drunken Chicken (quick & delish baked chicken) and a few bottles of wine. Compared to hosting, that was easy peasy as my nephew would say :)

I wore Bond No 9 Success is a Job in NY. First time this season. I really enjoyed how this spicy oriental fit right in with the spices used in sweet potato casserole, pumpkin pie and the vanilla in a fantastic pound cake. The food and scent were both thoroughly enjoyable!

I dont do Brick & Mortar Black Friday shopping. This morning I read a woman in L.A., while shopping at Walmart last night after 10pm, sprayed other shoppers with pepper spray to prevent them from getting an electronics item she wanted. Completely & utterly ridiculous. I’m fine to do some online shopping, relax and read a book. I’m truly thankful for this long weekend!

Wow. I am totally aghast and disgusted by the scene at Walmart that you describe! I honestly cannot sympathize with the mind-set that it illustrates! I wish that we could ship her and anyone like her to a third-world country to live in true poverty for a month to help her appreciate all that she has.

Wow. I’m very thankful that my relatives don’t expect much more than a flannel shirt or fleece sweater. No one I know would be happy with any gift if they thought I pepper sprayed other people to buy it.

A very disturbing disconnect between the message of Christmas and the actions taken to honor (or dishonor) it.

On my side of the world its not thanksgiving – but I have to say that the reminder to be grateful is always a good thing! In fact, I’m even grateful to the pepper-sprayer for making me, in comparison, seem extremely well-balanced and together.

There was a sale on at a local department store last week and I FINALLY purchased Herba Fresca. Its summer here, so I am really enjoying the herby-mint aroma. I’v wanted it forever and a day, and have been wearing it almost every day.

SOTD is Creed Selection Verte – I forgot how utterly wonderful and green this is.

I had tried SmellBent Pere Noel Coward last night, sort of jonesing for some pine / green scengs to cut the ubiquitous “spice” scents everywhere at Thanksgiving. I really tried, I did. It opened very piney then progressed to rank decaying pine. I had to finally scrub it because it was so obnoxious. Thank goodness I found the Creed to clear the air.
