Very severe but super dreamy

Posted by Robin on 15 August 2011 26 Comments

Model Mariacarla Boscono for Givenchy Dahlia Noir. According to Givenchy artistic director Riccardo Tisci,

I wanted to do something that really represents my woman, who is very defined after six years. She’s masculine but feminine. Very romantic but at the same time very dark. And very severe but super dreamy. All these kinds of opposite things. (via NMDaily)

“She writhes in simulated ecstasy, and she is often seen standing directly in the path of a wind machine.”

LOL — yeah, that too. But have to say that the image of the dress blowing is the only image that interested me.

I’v replayed it about 5 times just for those billowing petals of the black silken skirt – Wow!

Yeah…that’s a great shot. 60 seconds of that would have suited me better than what they did.

    Hehe.

    Masculine but feminine?

Which usually = dark wood/patchouli base plus some floral notes.

Ok, well I just now saw some of that video, could have gone without that one!
Givenchy is growing on me..I will look forward to giving this a sniff.

Though the weird gothic video. Repels me! Though, it is Noir..so. But really?

“Melancholic but wears the pants in any relationship”. Is that what masculine means? hehe.

It didn’t really repel me, but it didn’t do anything for me either.

Tried this yesterday. Boring harsh floral. I fear Givenchy is never going to have the comeback we’re hoping for.

I only tried it on paper — wasn’t impressed, but I’ll give it a longer try on skin this week.

This reminds me of a Madonna video, circa Ray of Light.

Too S&M. Looks unpleasantly bondage. I don’t like this trend.

The writhing doesn’t make sense. The unfurling does look like petals being shredded. Unfortunately, many perfume ads merely equate sex and perfume, perfume and sex…

Don’t know of a single Givenchy I like, and I don’t much like the ad for this, bar the blow-y fabric and the floor pattern as she walks over it! Too skinny for me. The bottle’s very masculine. I’ll report back if I ever smell it!

Tried this last week — would not have given this skin except on paper there is an excellent but short lived candle-smoke effect. On skin it’s exactly what Ari said, also a little baby-powdery. So apparently, she’s masculine but feminine AND she smells like baby powder.

The ad has little to do with the scent.

It looks to me like this ad is representing Riccardo Tisci’s aesthetic, so everything about this ad makes sense to me.

I didn’t think the scent itself sounded like it matched Riccardo’s aesthetic though when I first heard of this, and from a few of the comments I guess it really doesn’t.

Very Tisci indeed – and Mariacarla looks absolutely stunning.

Can’t wait to smell the fragrance!

I couldn’t agree more, the video is perfect for the Tisci aesthetic – it is dark, sensual and very dramatic – Mariacarla looks phenomenal and that dress is downright swoonworthy.

The scent is incredibly tame by comparison – a pretty and somewhat traditional floral.

      But…
      If the advert = Tisci
and the perfume does not = Tisci
Then it would seem the perfume does not = its own advert.

        How very logical of you!

(Oops, I sound sarcastic. I’m not being sarcastic. I was confused by the whole “mariacarla,” “tisci,” “aesthetic,” thing because I’m not arty and the fashion world is completely outside my understanding.)

Funny how the perfume does not correspond to the ad so many times, isn’t it?

Haha! I’m reaching far back into the past where I once did a course on logic. Unfortunately I cant even remember whether the syllogism is valid!

Earlier this month, I was at the Givenchy counter purchasing Eaudemoiselle, the sales clerk gave me two minis, one of the EDT and the other EDP. I smelled them while being rung up and figured I would give the minis away – but I ended up eventually trying both. I have been obsessed with it ever since.
The EDT smells very different from the EDP, they come across almost as two different scents. I purchased the 2.5 oz EDT today, absolutely love it. Before Eaudemoiselle, I was never into Givenchy fragrances – in one short month I have two new favorites from this fashion house.
As for the commercial, I think the flower opening and the skirt billowing are fantastic – the rest of it…..eeeehh. I see where they are trying to go, but it’s been done. S&M themed advertisements are no longer shocking or avant garde, we’ve seen it already.
