You know what I mean

Posted by Robin on 29 July 2011 27 Comments

There’s no fruity vanilla bull---t. I’m sorry, but you know what I mean? A lot of celebrity fragrances are fruit, vanilla, and I wanted something for grown-up girls.

— Dita Von Teese tells Women's Wear Daily all about her new fragrance, which will launch in Australia in the fall and reach the US in 2012.

Call me cynical, but I doubt her perfume will be that much different.

They’re aiming for something that costs around $30, so even if it’s more of a floral (and actually, several recent celebrity fragrances have been un-fruity florals) doubt it’s going to be spectacular. But, could be very nice, we’ll see. I don’t know a thing about the company she is working with — Luxesse.

I do have hope. She said her orignal signature fragrance was Quelque Fleurs, which I like alot. From the brief description I don’t get much of an idea but she’s someone who does fully commit to her image.

I’d have a bit more hope if she’d gotten an offer from EL or Coty Prestige. But we’ll see, maybe it will be fabulous!

I really like her attitude toward producing the perfume and the fact that she wore perfume before designing her own. I mean seriously, out of all the celebrities who have endorsed/’created” perfume, how many have spoken positively about their use of perfume prior to their own endeavor? Sarah Jessica Parker and Dita? Is that it?

However, I didn’t realize the price point was going to be so low. $32 is pretty low and I wonder what the quality will be like.

I think I’d ad Gwen Stefani too that brief list. Or is hers considered celebrity since it’s released under her fashion label, L.A.M.B.?

I’d still consider her fragrances celebrity perfumes. I think there are some others like that – the one that comes to mind is Jessica Simpson, who has a line of clothing & accessories… I believe the font/logo on her accessories is the same as for her perfumes.

Didn’t realize Gwen liked perfume before releasing her own. That’s cool.

Although the price point does concern me a little, I’m pretty excited about this (and we all know that price doesn’t always have much to do with how good a fragrance is!) I’ve always been a big admirer of Dita her style, and the very fact that she calls out most celebrity scents as “fruity vanilla bull****” and says she wants a perfume for grown-ups bodes very well, I think! Also, in addition to Quelques Fleurs, she’s apparently said she enjoys wearing fragrances as varied and interesting as JAR Shadow,
Feminite du Bois, Magie Noire, and Fracas. We’ll see!

It does bode well, & so we’ll see! But not until 2012.

I am pretty confused about the whole price-point issue. Bal de Versailles, for instance can be had for a song from certain discounters and it is *supposed to* have many fine ingredients, even in its modern formulation.I guess its not just the quality of ingredients but also the number that is likely to sell, i.e. the popularity??? (though BdV is hardly at its peak in popularity) Also the time and leeway they’v given to the designer, and then the massive mark-up on the mega-house brand label? Actually the ‘Britney Spears’ brand may be less inflated than the ‘Creed’ one?

It is possible to create something worthwhile at that price point. I mean, the Crazy Libellules are great and some of Smell Bents stuff is good, too. And she’s been tweeting her involvement. Still, kind of a bummer she didn’t go with a niche house.

Reading the article, I had no idea how huge this ‘stripper with a haircut’ has become! A martini gig, a perfume coming out, lingerie? I am in the wrong business, who knew its what some women do to support themselves in college that gets the big bucks, as oppose to what you’d do after… Just a question, does anyone know what this person DOES? Is she an actress? As much as I can remember she just does burlesque and sort of spearheaded that embarrassing moment in this modern era right? She should be sending Betty Paige’s estate monthly checks.

BUT so far I have to agree her perfume sounds like it has a better chance at not being AS god awful as most celebrity scents are and maybe slightly interesting. I’m cool with the price point, i think she says the lowest one will be available for that amount, which could mean like a 15ml version, or a roller ball type thing, which I support. And her take on femininity is at least a complete idea, as someone said she is *dedicated* to her image, so perhaps will put more thought into a fragrance idea than some others. If I were designing a scent for her, I’d stick to the Fracas school of thinking and maybe do a tropical tiki girl version with Tiare in summer.

She does burlesque shows for really rich people, and she’s had a few acting jobs and other misc deals, like she has 2 book deals. She waddled like a duck down the runway for Gaultier once. She goes to events with Austrian entrepreneurs. Stuff like that.
I think this project is probably important to her. It probably won’t be brilliant or original but I don’t think it’ll be poorly done.
I don’t like her or her style though so I’m not interested in trying it.

She is not a stripper! she does burlesque, which is a whole different ballgame. I’ve seen one of her shows and they are beautifully done and very classy. She has always loved vintage clothes and furniture (her home is stunning) and is a real girlie girl. I have good feelings for a frag from her, she LOVES perfume!

Her shows are classy because they are for rich people and because people believe that vintage=classy although there is no real reason to.
Not saying she isn’t classy but its an unfair double standard, in my opinion.

“Dita Von Teese” (not her real name ) dated or maybe even was married to Byron warner, AKA Marilyn Manson. Not too classy.

Well, she had the good sense to divorce him, at least.

And please, no one ever judge me based on my ex… :)

I haven’t seen her acts but my impression is that the focus is far more on style and artistry than plain sexuality (though sexuality is of course part of it). The audience of burlesque is typically of different ages and genders and it is considered an art form. Stripping, which is focused far more on nudity and eliciting a purely sexual response is not usually accorded the same status. Also, the vintage aspect (from what I hear) is also about evoking nostalgia, and consequently a richer multi-dimensional response.

Agreed, Merlin. Burlesque also has a broader definition of beauty and sensuality than stripping, and is– for the most part– very body-positive. I know women who have gotten into it to overcome body issues, and it’s been very (I hate this word, it’s a cliche, but I’m going to use it anyway…) empowering for them.

Isn’t it a pain when nothing will express a concept quite so aptly as an overused cliche!

Also, I’v always had the impression that plenty strip clubs cater for rich men, so its not as though the wealthy have burlesque as a substitute.

Miss Kitty v. I wont judge you by your ex as long as your taste has improved (and so long as you don’t judge me by my family!)

When I think of Dita and perfume, it’s hard not to think of The Party in Manhattan, a fav vintagey, skanky perfume that I do not own because it costs $275 for 50 ml. I wonder how close they can come for a tenth the price. I don’t have high hopes, but this is the first celebuscent that I’m curious to try.

I love her. And for that reason, I won’t go out of my way to smell it. I don’t want the disappointment. I suspect it’s just about money for her, and I’m fine with that.
