In fragrance, the prestige market grew by 6 percent during the first quarter of 2011 versus flat sales in the FDMx [mass] channel. NPD says the increase in prestige fragrance is due to the positive performance in top existing juice brands, as well as strong sales from 2010 fragrance introductions.

Maybe I need a degree in economics, but I still don’t understand it how this is possible in this economy!
I think the economic problems are so regional and spotty…we have been hardly affected, and the same is true for most of the people I know. Locally, only very specific industries appear to be in a downswing; others are doing fine. I certainly wouldn’t want to be trying to sell my house right now though!
FWIW, recently I read – though I don’t remember where – that in a bad economy, sales of lipstick rise. The supposed logic is that while pricey lipstick may be a luxury, it’s less of an expenditure than, say, an item of clothing or theater tickets. So, even though we’re cutting back, we’re still feeling indulged.
That is true, but also true that perfume sales dropped for much of the recession.
