Lazy weekend poll ~ Haiku challenge 2011!

Posted by Robin on 9 April 2011 371 Comments

Today, a repeat of last year's very popular Haiku challenge: pick a perfume, any perfume, write a haiku about it. Use the simplified English form — your haiku should have three lines, the first line with five syllables, the second line with seven syllables and the third line with five syllables. You can put the perfume name in the title if that makes it easier, and at any rate, don’t stress over the rules of traditional haiku — this is just for fun.

You can also, if you like, write your Haiku about a perfume house instead of a particular perfume.

Your host today is Jill. If you've never met, let me introduce you:

By the way, Hi, Jill!! Nice to meet you:))
Recently I’ve been exploring all Bond no.9s. It’s always been my favorite perfume house and there was so many fragrances from them I still haven’t tried yet, finally it was the time that something had to be done about it. I started swapping on MUA again and I’ve even been trading my partial bottles and minis of L’Artisan and Serge Lutens etc. for all kinds of Bond no.9 bon-bons. I was being super generous for little bon-bons!! My old time favorites include Nuits de Noho, Chinatown, Little Italy, Fire Island, Park Avenue and quite a few others but thanks to my recept MUA swapping I FINALLY tried Bleecker Street, Fashion Avenue, Harrods for Him and Her, Bryant Park, High Line, Andry Warhol series, signature perfume and a couple others. I am MADLY in love with Fashion Avenue and Harrods for Her. I also adore Bleecker Street for my fiance. This little poll with haiku is like a perfect exercise and made me have some thoughts about the perfumes I just fell in love with.

I am still DYING to try Coney Island. I have been searching for a sample of it on MUA, but for some reason I have no luck. Even when I offer items for a lot more of a value and specific wishlist items to other swappers, I got no preplies to my messages! Every other thing I wanted to swap for on MUA was a success just not the Coney Island. I also ordered a set of samples from Bond no.9 website… I ordered all 6 of the samples just to include Coney Island in them… and they substituted it for two other samples with a note they were out of the Coney Island ones!! Can you believe that? I really ordered the whole set (I also got Chinatown, Nuits de Noho, Park Avenue, Fire Island – which I already have and adore but it’s never too much of my favorites) JUST to be able to include Coney Island in them and no luck! I am starting to think I will never be able to sample Coney Island and it’s my NUMBER ONE fragrance on my “to try” list. Does anyone on here have even just a drop of it? I know this is not MUA but I had no luck there… If anyone has any amount of Coney Island on here and would consider doing a “nowsmellthis” swap with me, please reply to my comment! Let me know quickly if you’re interested in anything from Serge Lutens, Montale, Dyptique, Chanel and some other high-end things I have. I am really so desperate for Coney Island… Thanks so much!

    Jo Malone Acacia:

    Tell me the truth
    Your heart is exquisite musk
    Takes my breath away

HeI need your HELP!! Here is the thing: I love well-blended, powdery musks and almondy perfumes. This is exactly what Jo Malone’s Acacia Blossom cologne smells like. I have no idea what real acacia smells like although I know Jo Malone’s approach turns out to be the most beautiful musk I ever smelled. I’ve gone through many musks including Clair de Musc, Tom Ford White Musk Collection, Montale Musks and many others… just because I can never get enough of that pure, dreamy, powdery-white muskiness!! Well what a suprise I found my number one musk ever in a “Acacia” cologne accord from Jo Malone. The sad thing is – it’s impossible to find it. I cheerish my 9ml spray bottle and it’s like liquid gold to me.

Here is where I need your help: as impossible to find as it is, why is it impossible to even google it? When I search on google: “Jo Malone Acacia Blossom” all I find is “Nectarine & Honey Blosson” which yes, it does have acacia listed in it’s notes, but it’s not the same cologne I’m looking for. I am so curious to read about it’s official list of notes! Does anyone have any info about this scent? What is the list of notes for this? Why is it impossible to even find a word mentioned about discontinued Jo Malone fragrances? And of course… what does acacia smell like? Is the muskiness and all that powder natural for Acacia blossom? Jo Malone’s Acacia smells nothing like a tree/plant/greenery/shrubs. It just smells like musk and powder and almonds… why if acacia is a tree?

I assume it refers to the tree blossoms. Some flowering trees are quite fragrant. I remember 30 years ago, a blossoming mimosa tree by the laundromat I used smelled like Juicy Fruit chewing gum.

I see what you mean about it not being mentioned anywhere. The only place I see it is for sale on the ubiquitous online auction site, at a reasonable price if you love the stuff.

I have acacias here in the woods of west central Fla, but they are not blossoming right now. Ours have wicked long thorns that will easily go through your bootsoles.

Hi Lavandula, it looks like your beloved Acacia
is part of a series that Jo Malone calls Fragrance Chronicles.
I found it on the JM site. I only know this because I was
trying to find an unusual JM fragrance and it turned out
to be part of one of these sets. Here’s the link — hope it
      helps!

It just popped into my mind.. I just cannot understand how something so generic sells millions. I guess it is a marketing triumph.

If you want to sell a generic frag like hotcakes, hire the people that did the 1 Million campaign.

If you want to create a succesful celebrity scent line, good scent but still, you want it to sell like hotcakes..hire the people that did Gwen Stefani’s Harajuku lovers line (and the cute flankers)

Kaos.Geo, 1 Million sells a bllion because it’s sweet and sweet fragrances are suscessfull with girls. Its popular campaign works a lot, its fragrance is not bad and is a little bit feminine, what’s rare on the men’s perfumery.
          Good haikus.

Thank you! the one about my mom is very special.

She always wore a houndstooth tailleur to PTA meetings and school plays.. and It stuck on my mind as the print on the bottle was the same as her suit. I loved the Miss Dior, and she used to rub a little in our noses, literally, before we left for school on those occasions.

Nowadays she wears Miss Dior Cherie, and suits her very well!

Your amazing blog about Giorgio and now this haiku actually reminds me so much of Olfactoria lately (not because she wears it), she found a cheap bottle of Le Feu d’Issey, a long lost love of hers (and mine) buried behind a dozen bottles of Giorgio. It pays to plough through those yellow and white stripes sometimes. :)

Off topic (sorry Jil!), but it’s so interesting that Bond No 9 has featured a lot today. Yesterday I walked past the Bond counter at my local department store (I’m in Australia), which for some time has decreased the amount of counter space that it devotes to this line, and noticed that everything was half price. This is the only retailed of Bond No 9 in this city , and it looks like it is on the way out. I’m not Bond fan, but still, it’s a pity,

That is a shame, Annemarie. I do appreciate the Bond line … although an overwhelming amount of them don’t work for me, they have a handful that are really keepers for me and I think they do some interesting stuff.

Don’t know if it’s my skin or my Jicky, but to me Jicky is clearer, with high notes – that amazing combination of lavender, lemon and civet really sings. Rose d’Homme is woody or smoky, in a lower more uniform register. But they do have a lot in common – at least as much as most grandkids!

Dominika, I also find it hard to get excited about numbers, or to remember which is which after I try. Had to try this one, though, because the nose is Jacques Flori who did Etro Messe de Minuit and Shaal Nur. Not what I expected at all but I’m appreciating cumin this time.

So from Jo Malone I’ve tried and own: Blue Agava & Cacao (numero uno!! my new signature, most beautiful gourmand you can ever imagine, I’d die for it that’s how much I love it:), Black Vetyver Cafe (an all time favorite of mine, adore it so much always), Pomegranate Noire (newest discovery, suprisingly beautiful incense just like in Black Vetyver Cafe, adore it), Graperfruit (the only nice grapefruit that never turns bad on my skin, very well-blended, none of the cat urine stuff, just a beautiful, tart, summery citrus), Acacia Blossom (the most GOR GE OUS musk I’ve ever smelled, almondy-powdery dream), Cassis (very nice, slightly green – but not too much, fruity in a very deliscious way, very natrual and ulifting) – all very very nice and definitely worth a try. There was one more I’ve sampled before… Lime Basil & Mandarin. Oh what a horrible scrubber! A nightmare! How could one of my most favorite perfume houses create such a mistake? There is no juicy mandarin/orange note at ALL in it. All I ever got was a sour (yes sour, not tart but sour) green herby note and… nothing else. I love deliscious mandarin note in perfumes that’s why I bought a couple of samples of it on ebay. I thought I was either going to love it, like it or just be ok with it… well I would have never thought I was going to hate it with passion! There is very few fragrances I ever say that I HATE. Well Lime Basil & Mandarin… I hate you. I cannot stand you at all. How is it possible anything I try from Jo Malone i instantly fall in love with, I love the simple yet so elegant spirit of them all, except for this one… ugh.
