Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Vert Pour Madame ~ new perfume

Posted by Robin on 5 April 2011 16 Comments

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Vert Pour Madame

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz has launched Vert Pour Madame:

Vert pour Madame opens like a wind of Persephone and dries down to the elegance of Demeter. Inspired by the utterly chic and sophisticated style of the late 1970's and early 1980's classic green floral chypre, Vert pour Madame has power but more than that, she has depth. She's achieved it. As well, Vert pour Madame is the perfect harbinger of Spring with notes of hyacinth, jonquil and lily of the valley sewn into the earth with cedarwood, patchouli and moss.

Additional notes include aldehydes, bergamot, cassis bud, galbanum, peach, rose, neroli, orris, jasmine, violet leaf, ylang ylang, sandalwood, ciste, civet, moss, musk and tonka bean.

Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Vert Pour Madame is available in Eau de Parfum ($23-100) or Parfum ($70-198). (via dshperfumes)

I do want to smell this one. I keep meaning to put in a small order from the sale page, but have so far been too busy.

I think she mentioned this one was inspired by Deneuve, which everybody loved and which I never smelled.

I have a sample of this and I think it’s just beautiful. I’m a big chypre fan. It reminds me of old-school green chypres from the 70’s and earlier: like Estee Lauder’s Private Collection and Azuree; Guy Laroche Fidgi; Clinique Aromatics Elixir; Piguet Bandit… etc etc

    it’s really lovely.

Vert Pour Madame is quite high on my want list. I love the old-school green chypres, too, but cannot continue to chase them on the auction sites. Nice to know a fellow aficionado approves of VPM.

A short reminder of high school.
Persephone was the daughter of the Goddess of the Harvest (Demeter). Persephone was kidnapped by Hades, the King of the Underworld and the Dead. Demeter caused all the good crops to dry up and wither and used this scourge to secure an agreement for Persephone to be released, as long as Persephone had not eaten anything while in the underworld. However, Persephone was tempted into eating several pomegranite seeds. Therefore it was ruled that Persophene must spend one month in Hades each for each seed eaten. Demeter causes no crops to grow during this period (i.e. winter).
Bottom line: the breeze of Persephone is the Breeze of the Underworld. Is there a sulpher note.
P.S. I first heard this story through wonderful recordings by Julie Harris from texts by Robert Graves. I apologize to all of them for my horribly unpoetic summary.

D: I think it could be just as easily argued that the wind of Persephone is the gust of her returning to the world in spring, to spend the majority of her year here. No sulphur note needed…

One of my favorite myths since I started reading Greek mythology in 2nd grade. I think my interest in it all began when I watched Xanadu and wanted to find out more about these “muses” and their dad Zeus. lol

This sounds fabulous just from the promotional text, and Sarcon’s assessment makes me eager to order.

Green chypres are one of my fave fragrance categories. I loved EL’s Private Collection but don’t wear it since it’s my mother’s signature scent, but always loved it on her. And what I’ve smelled from 80’s power fragrances is encouraging since I like perfumes with good sillage and still remember my older sister getting ready for dances and dates with a good spritz of Tabu before she left, or smelling Diva on a scent strip in a magazine and thinking it was just beautiful.

I love the association of Persephone with the green and fruit notes in this and will have to put together a sample order. DSH’s Ancient Egyptian interpretations are still tempting me so maybe I’ll have to add this to the lot and give them a try. There’s just so many tempting perfumes on the site that I’m never able to end up with a reasonable sample order by the time I’ve finished putting them in the cart. :)

Love the name/backstory/notes and it’s inspired by Deneuve? I can sense that this is beautiful.

The description sounded so beautiful that I was driven to buy a small sample. I went to the DSH site and ordered away. Two days later in my mailbox was the most beautiful scent I think I might have ever smelled. My nose is picky so maybe when I find something I love I might be a bit drama but as soon as I put it on and smelled the drydown, I was back on her site ordering more. I bought the smaller bottle and the body creme. For me, the body cremes carry the scent sometimes better than the actual perfume. I am so pleased that I followed my nose and purchased this. I know it is a limited edition but I do hope she keeps it out there.

My small bottle just arrived this morning…and this is just beautiful. It might have been made for me. I reacted to it as ecstatically as my cats do when I uncork the catnip. I hardly ever find anything to be FBW anymore, but this certainly is.
