Indie line Smell Bent has launched Radio Dada, a collection of five fragrances "inspired by the artwork of legendary dada and surrealist masters":
Lobster Cellphone ~ "pink grapefruit, citrus peel, tomato leaf, and ozone over cheerful musk. lobster has never gotten a better reception."
Fuzzy Teacup ~ "white champa flower paired with peach, jasmine, cream, honey and muhuhu oil. this cup runneth away with our hearts."
Mots Verts ~ "hyacinth, rhubarb, green carnation and katrafay over crisp vetiver, vanilla bean and cream musk. it’s no better to be safe than sorry.
Disagreeable Object ~ "bitter orange and petitgrain spiced with cumin, celery, curry leaf, pepper, siam wood and bois de rose. this one’s got a little bite to it!"
Exquisite Corpse ~ "bergamot, tuberose, mimosa, white + green pepper, and sweet earth underscored with animal notes. a corpse has never smelled."
The Smell Bent Radio Dada fragrances are available in 8 ml Perfume Oil, 4 or 55 ml Eau de Toilette. They can be purchased at the Smell Bent website. (via newsletter from Smell Bent)
For some reason I’m extremely curious about the sample pack of these. I like that Brent really has fun with his fragrances.
He’s done a great job coming up with fun themes, really.
I can’t wait to get my samples…the only real question is…oils or sprays? Hmmm….
(Love dada. I think that may have been the first time I actually paid attention in an art class.)
These are all Surrealist references, not Dada at all. Just to be pedantic about it. The lists of notes look very odd!
You’re right! More Surrealist than Dada indeed.
The ad copy says “dada and surrealist”…
I may have to get Exquisite Corpse just for the name alone! Disagreeable Object sounds interesting as long as the celery is not. Pronounced.
LOL — in that list, the celery would be the least of my worries
I can’t help but think that he didn’t finish his sentence – “a corpse have never smelled” …. better? worse? After smelling his Untitled #8 I’m ready for anything.
Mots Verts sounds great to me, and as a nice plus, the katrafay could be beneficial…..
I want to be the one who is able to say when asked: “What are you wearing?” “Lobster Cellphone!”, or…”Exquisite Corpse!”, just because they appeal to my twisted sense of humor, and Exquisite Corpse in particular to my Goth sensibilities!
You should really check out Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab then.
Clever! I’m a pushover for Dada (and Surrealism, too).
But I wish they’d interpreted Marcel Duchamp’s “Belle Haleine eau de Voilette” [sic].
I’m with you, Cheryl!
Although I’m new to this fragrance stuff (and enjoying it immensely!), I have noticed that my preferences are already veering towards the “unusual” and nearly always “unisex” fragrances. In fact, I’ve taken to describing it as “perfume drag” since I nearly exclusively wear men’s or intentionally unisex fragrances. I can imagine a matching scent that is quirky, off-beat, and hard to define. . .right up my alley!
I guess we should be grateful they didn’t match another Duchamp peice, “Fountain” (a urinal!). Although now that I think about it, haven’t a few fragrances been compared to urinal cakes on this blog?!
LOL to the urinal! Exquisite corpse could have been fun: it refers to a collaborative composition (in words). I write a line, fold the page, you write the next line, pass it on…we end up with a poem. Imagine composing a fragrance that way. Instead, I guess their just riffing on the shocking name. Not quite so shocking, though, after Etat libre d’Orange’s “Charogne” (Carrion).
I love that Duchamp piece, Cheryl. They could have also easily have riffed on Rrose Selavy.
My art history knowledge isn’t even advanced enough to have caught all the references of these names; I’ve had to look a few up and still can’t figure out what “Mots Verts” refers to.
Maybe they thought moths…I think they would be “vert” with those notes.
mots verts translates into Green Words from French.
That much I understood.
I’d like to try “Disagreeable Object.” From this line I own “One” and “Lumberjack Werewolf”—they’re both terrific!
You can wear Lumberjack Werewolf? Any more than the tiniest bit of that on me and I smell like I’ve been dipped in toddler pee.
That’s a tough one, that Werewolf. Glad it works on someone!
The samples of the oil for the whole pack is $15, and for 5 others is $15 as well… HAD TO. So any that I dont like I’ll post on MUA or if you want to try after me let me know and Ill send them on.
I should really try them… but I am afraid, too many samples at this point!
But Fuzzy Teacup and Exquisite Corps both appeal to me… but too many, just way, way too many samples…
I always get the samples packs – this time I got the sprays for a change. Brent does some really interesting work – even if some of them aren’t totally wearable, they are interesting.
