Velvet & Sweet Pea's Purrfumery is the creation of Laurie Stern, a perfumer who blends her artisanal fragrances from carefully selected botanical ingredients. I first heard about this small company from Trish at Scent Hive, who recently shared some trial-sized amounts of Velvet & Sweet Pea's Face & Body Frostings with me. Fancy body creams are everywhere these days, and it takes a little something extra to impress me, so I'm glad Trish put these products right into my hands. They definitely need to be felt and smelled to be appreciated fully.
Velvet & Sweet Pea's Face & Body Frostings in Orange Blossom and Kashmir Rose are both concocted from a base of organic jojoba oil (infused with Tahitian vanilla beans), organic shea butter, virgin coconut oil, and organic oils of marula, avocado, red raspberry seed, rose hip seed, sesame, safflower, and vitamin E. Orange Blossom Whipped Face & Body Frosting is fragranced with neroli essential oil and blood orange oil. Its scent opens with a clean, bright neroli note, one of the nicest I've smelled in a body product in ages, and it turns more citrusy as the product warms on skin. This Frosting would layer beautifully under an orange blossom soliflore or something like Atelier Cologne's Grand Neroli. The Kashmir Rose Frosting includes Himalayan rose otto and Moroccan rose absolute, for a true rose scent with just an underlying suggestion of vanilla (from the infused jojoba). It's so beautiful and simple that you could easily wear it under any rose fragrance in your collection. (Velvet & Sweet Pea also offers a Tuberose Gardenia frosting scented with organic enfleurage butters, which sounds incredibly indulgent, in a rare and old-fashioned way; I haven't tried this one yet.)
Velvet & Sweet Pea recommends its Frostings for all-over use. I haven't tested them on my face, but I've been enjoying small amounts on my hands and elbows. The consistency of the product really is unusual: it looks fluffy and mousse-like, it feels creamy, and it melts into the skin with the lightest touch, leaving no oily or sticky residue. I've also found that the tiniest dab of Frosting, applied to the very ends of my hair, works as a moisturizing finishing product.
A jar of Whipped Face & Body Frosting would make a sweet little gift for someone who appreciates small luxuries, or just a private treat for yourself. It's a bit of an extravagance, but at least it's a wholesome extravagance (floral essences! organic seed oils!). If you're in a truly lavish mood, you might want to browse through Velvet & Sweet Pea's limited edition perfumes; if you're looking for a cheaper thrill, don't miss the whimsically packaged floral hydrosols.
Velvet & Sweet Pea Whipped Face & Body Frostings in Orange Blossom and Kashmir Rose are available in 1 ounce ($20) and 6 ounce ($90) sizes at the Velvet & Sweet Pea's Purrfumery website.
Jessica- I love the packaging on the jars. The Kashmir Rose sounds wonderful and the way you described the texture sounds like it would be a perfect match for my skin. I try to choose lotions/cremes that are easily absorbed into and leave no oily/greasy residue on my skin. I’m sure you are familiar with trying to find products that meet that criteria. I can almost smell it from here!
Dolly, it’s hard to find that balance, but V&SP does a good job!
I’ve had one eye out on this company for a while – looks like I’m edging a bit closer. These sound awfully scrumptious!
T, I’ve been eyeing the website for a while… this is a good “entry” product. They also sell sample sets!
I can’t even read this post. The title alone is making my mouth water!
Ha! It’s a tempting name, and it fits the products.
I adore the body frostings and am in love with Laurie.
I have the rose and the tuberose one.
She is someone I’m drawn too by her creations and her energy.
Her Fir-ever Young is my favorite and it is magical.
I have emailed her several times and we have had beautiful convo’s.
I would love to meet her one day and give her a hug.
Go Laurie!!<3
A true admirer! Thanks for sharing your favorites. 😉
These sound beautiful! And I’m amazed at the consistency you describe – usually organic creams and lotions with a list of oils like this are the consistency of Crisco! Thanks for the heads up. 🙂
Rappleyea, They really are frosting-like, not goopy! They’re actually sort of fun to apply. I used my samples sparingly, which was difficult@
This is the first I’ve heard of this company, and these products sound very intriguing. I’m coping with sub-zero temperatures right now, and generally harsh winter conditions — I was just thinking that some indulging is in order. Sounds like just the ticket, thanks 🙂
Annunziata, The topic of self-indulgence came up in my last review (LV Teint de Neige), and we all agreed that winter is a good time for pampering! You might need something a bit more intense than these Frostings for truly damaged, chapped winter hands — but for normal/dry skin, they’re ideal.
Here’s my dirty little secret for “dry- as- a- popcorn- fart” skin in WY: L’Occitane sells the tiny little tin of 100% shea butter for 9 bucks. I go to my beloved chiropractor and he has a huge box, twice the size of a box for a case of wine, and he just scoops the very same 100% scent-free shea butter into a jar for me. I get refills every 10 days. OMG. I put the jar in the shower, to soften it whilst I bathe. Then, I can afford to mix in some, say, Habanita lotion, which is divine, or whatever, and be lubed up AND smell great! With this karmic-bonus from my local back-cracker, I can now AFFORD to try some of these products you described. They sound delicious!
This was a fun post.
Indeed!
That sounds lovely AND economical! I have only just tried the habinata perfume and while I love the heavy powdered vanilla rosiness, the vetiver becomes stronger and stronger until I just smell like grapefruit!
My goodness! These sound so luscious, Pampering…..mmmmmm, love that pampering. I am off to their website……oh wait, I have to work. I am definitely dropping by their site at some point.
Thanks for the write up!
Enjoy browsing the site! It’s fun eye-candy.
I can sympathize – doesn’t work just get in the way sometimes?!
Oh, darn. Now I must have some of the white floral stuff…
… Valentine’s Day is coming up, right?
Yes, it is. And this is a perfect line for Valentine gift-giving…!
These sound wonderful – esp for dry Colorado winters.
The Black Cat fragrance caught my eye last fall and I’m still thinking of ordering it. Has anyone here tried it? Yay or nay?
Thanks!
Springpansy, That one caught my eye, too — I’m hoping to try it soon! I’ll report back if it’s interesting!
Great – thank you!
Wow! What a delightful surprise to see your wonderful story on my Frostings! Thank you, Jessica! Thanks to Trish for being generous and sharing too! And for all of the kind comments. I hope everyone can get a chance to try my creations!
XOXO~Laurie
