Scotch & Soda Barfly ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 16 December 2010 33 Comments

Scotch & Soda Barfly

Dutch clothing brand Scotch & Soda has launched their debut fragrance, Barfly for men:

After several years of building and expanding their brand, the creative team at Scotch & Soda have realised a long lived dream and proudly present their first men's fragrance entitled BARFLY.

Much like our clothing, the perfume has its own character and is full of details. The creative team had a strong idea about how Barfly should smell and the feeling it had to evoke. Terms like intense but simple, young and transparent had to be translated into a scent.

The notes include calone, anise, pepper, basil, cardamom, orange, mandarin, lemon, lavender, spike oil, jasmine, sandalwood, cedar, vanilla and "high class white musk notes".

Scotch & Soda Barfly is 40€ for 50 ml Eau de Toilette. (via scotch-soda, found via sfilate.it)

I suppose their next fragrance will be named Wino? BTW, what is “spike oil”? I have heard of spikenard and spike lavender, is it one of those?

      I think it’s a kind of lavender:

Is perfume labeling anything like food labeling, in which the ingredient listed first is the one they used the most of? If so, I’m glad for the calone warning.

LOL…no, just that it’s in the top notes.

Nice to see something Dutch mentioned here! Anyone here tested any of the other recently released Dutch perfumes, those made by Rituals? This Dutch brand also sells candles, bath and body products, diffuser reeds sets, dishwash and more. I like most, but not all of their stuff, but their diffusers are great. Just wondering if there are any Dutch parfumistas lurking here who have tried their actual perfumes… Just checked and their site is only in Dutch (sorry!), but it might be fun to know that Dutch airline KLM uses their products in the business class (which i only know about because i snuck into their strictly forbidden loo…. )

I know Rituals has a new set out, but don’t know anything about the brand really, sorry!

BARFLY? BAR-FLY ??? barf–ly? sorry, but the first word I saw was “BARF”……then I realized, oh: bar-fly……nice association here: stale cigarette smoke, yesterday’s sweat …a bit of diner grease and an under-note of vomit and over-used restrooms…. holy cow.
Maybe they were going for humor….maybe they need a better marketing team…

Daisy, I thought the same a long time ago but then I realized that these associations were not the fault of whomever said “barfly” but mine… basically what I mean is that you should frequent BETTER bars hehehehehe 😉

Nope, I like it. This could be an ode to the movie “Barfly” (Mickey Rourke & Faye Dunaway), one of my all-time favorites. The “high class white musks” even fits with the agent who discovers the Chinaski/Bukowski character.

I like it too – good thing they didn’t go the Guerlain route and call it ‘Bar Bee’

Their next perfume needs to be called “Ironweed” to keep the cinematic drunk theme going. 🙂

I remember an old SF gossip columnist named Herb Caen writing just that when the movie came out – about how a little kid pronounced it barf-ly and decided that was a gross name for a movie! So now I can’t see that word without pronouncing it that way.

And yes, this should have booze notes. I don’t think I’ll need to smell it with calone as a header note.

Yikes. At the least put some booze notes in there- maybe juniper to represent the G&T swiggers out there, heads wreathed in Lucky Strike smoke. Blech…

I like the “high class musk notes”, but would prefer that they went the whole hog and used “lower class musk notes”, or “no class at all musk notes”.

Can’t say I’m a fan of the name. The ‘aroma’ I associate with barflies is anything but aspirational.

Yes, but aspiring all the time is exhausting ‘n sometimes I just wanna sit at the bar and…

Nooooooo, not Calone! I thought the perfumers were finally over that phase. The name is pretty goofy, but I was at least expecting some interesting boozy and tobacco notes. Those listed sound like a mess to me. “Intense but simple, young and transparent”? Kinda sounds like a teenage boy, is that the market they’re after?

Damn! Barfly was going to be the name of my entry into the next Prix Eau Faux! 😉

This is one I won’t even be thinking about sniffing, since the notes include calone and lavendar. If it contained melon it would be the trifecta of my personal no-go list. But I’m all in favor of creative teams with strong ideas, so it will be interesting to see what they come up with if they develop another fragrance in the future.

This sounds great! I would love to get some…but I don’t want to go to Amsterdam or Canada. Flankers under development: Barfly Single Malt, Duble Barfly, Barfly on the Rocks (for that summery feel), and for that hour when things get really strange, Barfly Last Call, or maybe Barfly Closing Time.

Yup…this is the perfect scent for old fat guys. The cheap knock-off will be called Booze-hound. Wrapped in a brown paper bag.

The orange/calone/basil combo beckons. And the name is as campy as they come– I’d love to try it!

Mmm I don’t care about how the name sounds, Barfly is my favourite, pricey but oh so worth it. Just picks me up and makes me feel great.
