The Museum of Arts and Design in New York has announced the creation of the Center of Olfactory Art, a museum department devoted to the art of fragrance and led by Chandler Burr, author of Emperor of Scent and Perfect Scent. Burr hopes to...
...place olfactory art within in the mainstream of art history and to show that scent is a legitimate artistic medium, the equal of painting, sculpture, architecture and music.
As previously announced, the museum will host The Art of Scent, 1889-2011 next November; it will be the Center's inaugural exhibit.
Burr hopes to develop exhibits and programs revolving around fragrance as an art form; future exhibits might look at synthetic molecules, issues surrounding reformulation, raw materials and "olfactory geography", and the contributions of perfumers. The Center also hopes to serve as a design resource, and to feature fragrance artists in its Open Studios program. (quote via Wall Street Journal, additional information via press release)
I’d sure like to make another trip to NYC for this. Perhaps since it’s an inaugural, they’ll hand out some samples?
OOOOh, I like to dream!
I kind of doubt it will be a good source of perfume samples.
You’re probably right.
Can’t wait to see the exhibit. I walk past the building on my way to/from Lincoln Ctr for the opera/ballet, which is just 4 blocks up from the museum.
The exhibit sounds really interesting, and I think it is going to have a book to go with it, which is great for those of us too lazy to drag ourselves to NYC 😉
Or those of us to short of either money or vacation days to make the trip cross-country.
That too 🙂
