Scientists are announcing development and successful testing of the first "perfumery radar (PR)." It's not a new electronic gadget for homing in on the source of that Eau de Givenchy or Jungle Tiger in a crowded room. Rather, PR is a long-awaited new tool for bringing scientific order to the often arbitrary process of classifying the hundreds of odors that make-up perfumes.

“…With the PR, manufacturers could speed up the development of new perfumes — namely the so-called preformulation stage in which they experimentally evaluate the product — thus saving time and money, the report states…” [American Chemical Society (2010, December 2). ‘Perfumery radar’ brings order to odors. Speed up the devel….AAAAAHHHHH!!! Do we really want perfumes lobbed at us at a faster rate than they already are? As with fast food, now fast perfume…
Saving time and money–right. I’m sure those manufacturers would love to pass the savings on to the consumers!
I know they say that, but I am having trouble seeing how a more efficient classification system would speed up anything but classification…either way, I don’t think the rate of new perfume launches is being held back at this point by development time.

Thanks for the link – I was curious about the charts/graphs – not to mention the partial derivatives.
