Note: as usual, Kevin is responsible for all of the above except for Allure.
I got to get Elle and Allure to test those samples.
The scent strips are back up to the usual levels this month.
Hmm. Could it be a subliminal thing with the start of the shopping season about 6 weeks away?
Absolutely — nothing subliminal about it. This is when advertisers spend $.
To respond to your comment about Drew Barrymore, Robin, I am sick of celebrities on fashion magazine covers in general. Anna Wintour jumped on this trend and, well, I guess it sells more covers to a populous that is more interested in Hollywood & celebrity than fashion. But it really makes me long for the days of the supermodels – even the completely overexposed ones like Cindy Crawford.
Now, in a totally hypocritcal turn, I did buy the new GQ in a weak moment at the drugstore checkout. Ryan Reynolds eyes are a sexy vortex that takes me out at my knees and sucks the money out of my wallet. 😛 No fragrance coverage, indeed, but a very interesting interview with Mr. Reynolds and a riveting and chilling article about an American nurse who was assiting and encouraging suicidal people in an online chat forum to kill themselves, specifically by hanging. Other than that, though, I find GQ to be the kind of gross men’s magazine Details was in the 90s. Haven’t read a Details in years, so I don’t know if they are still like that, but I may have to peruse this one for the considerable fragrance coverage.
It’s confusing but that’s Kevin’s comment — he writes up all the mags except Allure. I didn’t even recognize her…
Oh, whoops!
You can’t tell unless you read the last line, which is bad … who reads the last line? But I don’t read any fashion mags at all, and hardly even read Allure — more like I flip through it in case they say something interesting about perfume, which they rarely do.
La Maroc: Totally laughing about your description of RR’s sexy vortex eyes. I don’t often look at GQ, but last time I leafed through a few I actually found the journalism pretty good.
I’m with Robin… would never have recognized Barrymore, but yeah, I’m sick of everyone on magazine covers.
Lol! Yes, I also have a tendency to be spell-cast by Ewan McGregor, Eric Bana, Clive Owen, Viggo Mortensen…(I could go on) but no one gets my money faster than RR!
Anna Wintour probably STARTED the trend! I used to buy mags off the stand if they had a model on the cover instead of a celebrity. Which meant rarely.
I have, too. If I see an actual model on the cover of a magazine these days, it makes me stop in my tracks and check it out. I wish, at the very least, they would feature a model or models on the September issue or any that feature Fashion Week coverage.
My pet peeve is that there are more movie stars on the cover of Rolling Stone than rock stars – and that just ain’t right!
So true! No wonder I haven’t picked up a Rolling Stone in years. I only just noticed that they shrunk the size about a month ago. How long ago did this happen?
Also – I’ve heard good things about Coqui Coqui fragrances. However, I don’t think I’m curious enough to risk my life right now by going to Mexico to try them!
Oh my gosh… don’t fall into that trap. 90% of the places a tourist would go in Mexico are perfectly fine. Have not heard anything about Coqui Coqui though.
Celebrities . . . yawn.
They make boring magazine covers, terrible SNL hosts and bad perfume endorsements.
Betcha anything that celebrities sell more perfume than models, all other things being equal.
^Everything you named I love! I love them as Fragrance Endorsements, I love them on SNL and I’ll only BUY a magazine cover if my favorites are on there! I just KNEW Robin didn’t write that comment about Drew, hahaha! Drew is my girl
LOL! Variety is the spice of life so SOMEONE needs to be happy about celebrity magazine covers, perfume, etc.
I am a die hard fan of Ever After, so for that I will give Drew a pass on her recent glut of cover shots.
Why does she look so different? Or has it just been awhile since I’ve seen her?
The current issue of Marie Claire (with Victoria Beckham on the cover) has two scent strips; Peace, Love, and Juicy by Juicy Couture and Play for women by Givenchy.
It’s kind of a good thing. Their last couple of issues didn’t have any.
Thanks! And yeah, scent strips were scarce over the summer.
Vogue scent strips: Giorgio Armani Aqua di Gioia, Calvin Klein Beauty, Juicy Couture Peace Love & Juicy Couture, Givenchy Play for Her, Kate Spade Twirl.
No editorial coverage.
Thanks!
In the October issue of InStyle:
Justin Timberlake and his “knowledgeable nostrils” are the subject of What Justin’s Nose Knows in the What’s Now! section of the magazine. Timberlake recounts stealing his grandfather’s Polo aftershave when he was 11 and answers other fill-in-the-blank questions about scent.
Evan Rachel Wood is also in the What’s Now! section in a short about the Gucci Guilty ad shoot. Wood is quoted as saying, “Guilty is sweet-smelling, not harsh. I wouldn’t mind being stuck in an elevator with this perfume.”
In a feature called Inside the Files of the Super Stylish, 11 “world-class tastemakers” named favorite products and services. Several named their favorite perfumes or scented candles:
Interior Designer Kelly Wearstler – Maison Francis Kurkdjian Cologne Pour le Matin

Actress/Designer Nicole Richie – Diptyque Candles (to give as hostess gifts)

Fashion Designer Catherine Malandrino – Jasmine (no perfumer mentioned)
In Beauty Talk, Jennifer Lopez says her new Love and Glamour fragrance is “…fresh, but it has musk and sandalwood in it, so it’s a bit sexier than my other fragrances.” Reported price is $58 for 2.5oz at Macy’s. Lopez lists Oribe Brilliance and Shine Shampoo and Conditioner among her beauty must-haves, saying, “When I first smelled these products, I was like, Mmmm… they remind me of my first fragrance, Glow.”
Among the Editors’ Picks in the Beauty section is Maine Eau de Parfum by MCMC Fragrances, “a musky, sea-soaked scent…” Reported price is $110 for 50ml at mcmcfragrances.com.
The Shop It! section spotlights items that give back to breast cancer charities. The Left Bank Candle by Charlotte Moss appears to have a pagoda-inspired lid and is said to smell of lemongrass and peppercorn. Reported price is $55 at agrariahome.com. Ten percent of proceeds will reportedly go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Actress Blake Lively is this month’s participant in On My Mind, the fill-in-the-blank column on the last page of the magazine. Her signature scent is…”Burberry the Beat. It’s fresh and light but still has impact. I also own eight Tokyo Milk scents, so depending on my mood, I’ll spritz one on top.” Burberry the Beat and Tokyo Milk Gin & Rosewater perfume are shown with a photo of the actress.
There are seven scent strips this month: Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb, Chanel Coco Mademoiselle, Dolce & Gabbana Rose the One, Guess Seductive, S by Shakira, Outspoken by Fergie for Avon, Juicy Couture Peace Love & Juicy Couture.
Wow, thanks! Way more coverage than Allure.
Supposedly Tom Ford scented the Oribe line, or at least part of it. It’s pretty nice stuff – I have some samples.
Thanks, Tama. I had no idea. Now I’m tempted to try it.
The strip of Peace, Love and Juicy Couture didn’t seem too bad to me. I’ll have to try it out on skin.
