So depressing!
I suppose, but in what sense?
We have these magazines dedicated to beauty, fashion, etc., things that are – well – non-essential, I suppose. They spend pages and pages adoring makeup and clothes, and shoes, bags, scarves, skin care, and then, if we’re lucky there are just a few blurbs regarding perfume – something, like clothese and the rest, that is created and designed , and, at least in my opinion, of just as high an art form as the others.
The problem, I suppose, in part, is due to the fact that clothes, and even makeup to an extent, are visual, and perfume is not, and, let’s be honest, scent-strips don’t cut it (though those wipes of Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere were pretty neat)…I guess it might be more difficult to get the point across, but, on the same front – there are whole magazines full of “food porn,” and I could certainly imagine similar for the nose!
I guess what I am saying is that it’s depressing to realize something I truly adore is something many other women don’t give much thought to at all – despite the fact that scent can be just as, and often more, powerful in terms of appearance/perception/confidence/comfort, etc. as clothes or a nice handbag or great face cream or those killer heels.
All true. I am not a big fan of fashion/beauty magazines so I don’t think it much bothers me — I don’t find them terribly informative about anything. It is really rare that there is anything at all in Allure that I want to read.
Ah, yes. Most are pretty much drivel….but Vogue! At least Vogue could do much better!
I have barely picked up a magazine in years…..they’re just a bound collection of advertisements it seems. I guess if they started having loads of fun/interesting perfume coverage I might be inspired to go buy some mags….as it is : money saved. Anything I want to know about my obsession—is right here online for free 🙂
I used to love the ads, way back in the day. Stupidly, I keep subscribing to magazines, but never get around to reading them. You’d think I’d give up until the kids get older. They aren’t fashion mags, though. I might want to check out that Details, though; love Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
I pretty much slept through “Inception,” but I love him, too. 🙂
No no… you only *thought* you were sleeping… 😛 I guess being completely out of the media loop has some distinct advantages. Having missed all the hype, I didn’t have any particular expectations, so I liked it. Not a “best ever”, but interesting and entertaining.
Whoops–should clarify: I didn’t think it was a bad movie, I just couldn’t stay awake. (Although action films tend to not hold my interest, so that does factor in.) 🙂 I guess my point was that I wasn’t awake enough of the movie to judge how well he did in it, but thought he was adorable when I was conscious and paying attention.
I second that. The scales fell off my eyes when I started to read these wonderful blogs and realised that beauty editors aren’t really giving genuine good impressions of the latest fragrance/product – they are either getting them for free or being paid to review kindly. I had begun to think (naive I know) that it was strange that their favourite items just so happened to be the newest launch, but then it dawned on me what was happening. So, as you so rightly say, Daisy, why pay them money for a mostly uninteresting volume when you can come on here and get the latest news along with honesty, humour, tears and the companionship of fellow fanatics?!
Exactly!
I wholeheartedly agree.
It’s true, you can do better online.
Ocassionally, publications within the beauty industry do us a favor.
I was flipping through Sephora’s fall look book, when there, on a page filled with recent perfume releases and with the word “NEW” in bold caps beside it, is a lovely bottle of SHALIMAR. The original Shalimar, not some reworked abortion, not Shalimar Sport or Shalimar por Homme.
I stared and read the copy, and then I just sat back and smiled at the thought of thousands of loyal devotees of (insert vapid fragrance here) wearing this “new-fangled Shalimar creation”.
Now, if only Sephora would pull this sneaky litttle trick with Azuree for spring….
I think that’s the new bottle design? Not sure though.
Perhaps, but it was on a page with Miss Pucci and Eternal Grace, two truly new releases. I’m not saying they are intentionally or nefariously trying to dupe the public (I’m sure they aren’t, how silly would that be?), but I found it odd. Mostly I just liked the idea of high schools and college dorms across the country reeking of Shalimar instead of Pink Sugar.
In the August issue of InStyle:
The What’s Now section pictures Faith Hill, Eva Longoria and Kim Kardashian on the red carpet and shows how their celebrity fragrance bottles echo their dresses.
Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester lists her custom-blended scent (white tea, fig and sandalwood oils) from the Fragrance Shop New York as one of her must-haves in Beauty Talk. Reported price is $9. The pictured bottle is 1/8 ounce.
Gap’s new EDT, Stay, is included on the Deals & Steals page of the Beauty section. Notes listed are green hydrangea, blue lotus, white peony and amber musk. Reported price is $9 for a mini .34 ounce bottle.
In On My Mind (last page) SNL’s Kristen Wiig says her signature scent is “…patchouli oil with Douce Amere by Serge Lutens. I love mixing scents; I never wear one at a time.”
Scent strip is Chanel Chance Eau Tendre
Go Kristen Wiig!
I thought the same thing!
