Shakira S by Shakira ~ new perfume

Posted by Robin on 30 July 2010 54 Comments

S by Shakira advert

Singer Shakira will launch her debut fragrance, S by Shakira, in September under arrangements with Puig.

Shakira noted that "layering notes is like adding instruments to compositions"; the end result has jasmine, sandalwood, benzoin, amber accord and vanilla.

S by Shakira will be available in 15, 30 and 50 ml ($17-35). (via wwd)

I was excited! I was hopeful! And then I saw the prices. Not much chance of these being fantastic in that range, is there? Still, maybe it will be a nice cheap thrill.

It is a mass market scent. I think the only other celeb scent Puig does is Antonio Banderas, if that helps.

Oh geez, not even the $50 range eh? Yeah, looks like a new Walmart scent.

The notes sound like they *could* be nice, but frankly I just don’t get my hopes above mediocrity anymore.

These notes don’t sound bad at all (but cheap jasmine is usually pretty harsh). I like the price point and the smaller sizes….maybe….?

Boo and Amy have pretty much summed up my first thoughts… ooh yummy notes…but hard to imagine high quality at that price level…always hopeful, but haven’t sniffed anything of the celebuscent variety lately that hasn’t fallen in the range of Ewwww! to Meh!
And speaking of ewww….I got a sample of Womanity in the mail the other day —yes, I would have said “Whoa-mahn-ahhh-teeee” except y’all would have assumed the cat was laying on the keyboard again….anyhoodles…it was vile….actually vile….it was torture to wait and see if maybe it was going to get better…..it didn’t.

What a bummer about Womanity! I haven’t gotten my sample yet, but after yesterdays video review from Katie Puckrik, I haven’t been too hopeful.

How did you get your samples?? I went to the website and it wasn’t available to sample in the US. (Don’t ask why I’m chomping at the bit for something everyone else has panned.)

I’ll see if I can find the link….if anyone else has the link; send it to Kitty, ok? She needs to be offended by this too.
          I didn’t see Katie’s review….must go see ….

Don’t feel too badly… they’re just those stupid little cards with a dab of scent under foil. Not like you can really smell anything that way! I forget who called it a glorified scent strip (Cynthia?), but that’s dead on.

Ugh… yes. I was so disappointed – not the least because it smelled halfway like something that I might be interested in, but who knows? BECAUSE IT’S ON A STUPID PIECE OF PAPER AND I CAN’T TELL.

Okay – I’m done shouting. It was very peppery on the scent strip, but who knows how that translates on skin.

I actually purchased a bottle of Womanity and find the scent puzzling but pleasant ( damning with faint praise, anyone?).
Milky green fig with a hint of coconut and the salty calone note, that at times smelled like a) the beach b) seaweed c) old seaweed.
I’m very curious to see how this does in the marketplace – it will either be a huge hit or a complete flop ( @ Marshalls next year).
The bottle is tacktastic – steel and heavy glass.
By the way, I am male and will wear it happily, though I do hate the name. Visit by Azzaro was the worst frag name IMHO.

I always thought “Intrusion” was the worst fragrance name but there must be others! I tried Womanity and thought it was interesting and well-done for what it is supposed to be. I think it will sell to the same group that buys Alien, not Angel. Womanity is not me but I “get it” in the same way Shalimar is not me but I understand it’s worth and popularity. The bottle is heavy, asymmetric, art nouveau fabulous!

LOL —you never know until you try something, right? sometimes you say “mmmm…good” and sometimes you make a face (sometimes you run screaming for the soap and water). It’s a darn good thing I have one or two other fragrances to console myself with. ;-)

just a snarky remark: even Shakira seems to be wearing more clothes than Jennifer Aniston for promoting her scent… but otherwise I must admit I’m too much of a snob to even try all these celebrity scents (with a couple of exceptions)

Of all the female teen sensations from the late 90’s (Brittany era) my daughter hated Brittany and loved Shakira and Pink too for that matter…I think she is adorable. So I know I will have to buy this for my daughter…I will do my best to keep an open mind. ;)

That doesn’t sound like a very original composition, but I will agree that it doesn’t sound like a mess either. My guess is it will be like most drugstore offerings: on par with Avon in the “pleasant but not particularly complex” category.

Ok, I can’t believe no one else has said it: what is UP with that picture of her?? That doesn’t look like her at all! What did they do??

Don’t feel that way! She’s really, really pretty….but you know how perfume ads are—they would photo shop the most beautiful woman in the world! They have this burning drive to digitally transform every woman into some unattainable, imaginary version of what they consider ideal….and THAT is what is insulting.

Awww, thank you! And you’re absolutely right. A while ago there was a before-and-after-photoshop picture of Britney Spears floating around, and in addition to photoshopping all the normal things, they also SMOOTHED OUT HER KNEECAPS. Are we not supposed to have kneecaps now???

nope, no kneecaps allowed! A while back there was a hubbub over that girl from High School Musical —where they photoshopped her for something—and I was so offended !!! She’s pretty and adorable and 19 —what does that say about us as a people that we can’t see 19 and gorgeous as not “good enough” ….certainly doesn’t leave the over 40 crowd with much to hope for. grrrrrrrr.

        • miss kitty v. says:

True. She’s gorgeous and they made her look less interesting. Ari, if you look like Shakira, you’re a lucky lucky lady. I get told I look like Cyndi Lauper. (There are worse things, but…)

LOL Cyndi Lauper? really. That’s kind of cool. People always used to say I look like Jackie Zeman who played Bobbi Spencer on General Hospital…..oh great: I look like the town’s ex-prostitute turned OR nurse who cheats on husbands, gets blinded, gets amnesia, gets cheated on, gets invovled with mobsters etc, etc….. Haven’t seen a picture of her in years though—hopefully we still look good……

not completely disappointed, but I hoped she’d have slightly more exotic notes, what with her belly dancing notoriety and Middle Eastern influence in some songs. I guess it’s not a complete letdown-there’s some sandalwood and amber, right?

I like Shakira, even have a couple albums – but the golden glowing Barbie on a Middle East Beach look is lost on me. It seems like something Paris Hilton should be doing.
Maybe I expected a fragrance with more punch from Shakira, lush spices or a little earthier.

Well… I hate to sound snobbish, and i hate to because i do ADORE Shakira, However, at those price points… i am Skeptical about the fragrance. with those notes it could be quite beautiful, but if not blended properly or cheap elements are used, then it’s just going to be a Hindenburg of a Fragrance… sad to say! Although Magic can happen in the strangest of places, so one never knows, do they!?!?!? :-D

Well, look, I’ll be honest. I’d buy whatever Shakira does, whether is it perfumes, CDs, tomato sauce or sets of screw drivers, as long as they put her picture on the box. Call me a superficial, but she’s drop dead gorgeous. And that hip movement, man. I REALLY hope she will come up with a video promotion!

I love Shakira too! It’s about time she have a perfume. She’s such an inspiration that I’m so glad I’ll have something of hers to wear. Like I have all the CDs, but you can’t wear CDs. P.S. Can’t wait ’till her new September CD. I learned Spanish because of her.

Not to hi-jack the thread about Shakira….but I won one of the small bottles of Womanity here on Nowsmellthis. Its was ok. I wasn’t too sure about it. In walks my 30-yr old daughter and she went crazy for it. So I passed it on to her. She loves it and it smells wonderful on her. Just wanted to pass that on with my thanks.
