Wonderwood

Posted by Robin on 18 May 2010 23 Comments

A short (and appropriately weird) film by the Brothers Quay for the upcoming Wonderwood fragrance from Comme des Garçons. Many thanks to Mary for the link!

How beautifully odd! Reminds me a bit of Pan’s Labyrinth. A wild guess – the juice might contain a pine note?

      I hope it has pine!

I’m still too chicken to watch Pan’s Labyrinth…too bad because I do know it’s supposed to be great.

Oh Robin – don’t put off watching Pan’s Labyrinth one more day! It really IS a glorious and beautiful film.

I haven’t found a good piney fragrance yet – looking forward to trying this. Wonder if Barney’s will be carrying it????

I’m afraid I’m a complete wimp about violent movies, unless it’s essentially comic book violence as in the Bond movies, etc. But understand PL is pretty gruesome & upsetting.

I’m the same way about violent movies, as in, I can’t/won’t/don’t watch them. Pan’s Labyrinth, however, does not contain the gratuitous violence we are subjected to in American films. It was creepy, scary, spooky – the whole nine-yards – but the violence, I barely remember because it was all in the service of the story.

The word I would use is “cruel”. And not remotely gratuitous – it really adds to the film. DelToro’s ghost story, “The Devil’s Backbone” is also beautiful in a similar way.

Well, there is one scene in particular in PL where I had to look away, but what a brilliant & extremely moving film it is. Highly recommended.

Thanks guys! Maybe. The “cruel” part worries me.

Well, Cruel in the way that life can be cruel and people can be cruel, you know? There are some things that make you cringe, not because it is bloody, with arterial spray and body parts flying around, but because it is painful. Hard to explain. Maybe start with Devil’s Backbone (if you can do subtitles) to get a feel for his style.

I know what you mean Robin. I can’t watch movies with “realistic” violence because the images stay with me….and stay and stay. I can watch action/adventure movies (Go ahead let Bruce Willis AK47 down a ton of terrorists –no problem) but the real type stuff—it’ll be perfectly emblazoned on my brain forever.

I hope so! They’ve done quite a few woody scents lately, so interested to see what they can do that’s new.

    Amazing add!

I’m looking forward to trying this one. I’m a huge fan of Hinoki. I wish Wonderwood were as good…

This reminds me of Bjork’s old video for “Human Behavior.”

I adore the Brothers Quay– their visual aesthetic is amazing, as is the scent aesthetic that some of their films imply. (I seem to recall a scene in “Institute Benjamenta” in which a decorative display case invites visitors to “please sniff” — then reveals that it contains a tiny mound of crystallized male stag pheromones….)

OK, Philistine here… I’m all for weird, but god, that was boring! Almost made me wish for Beyonce to come sashaying out.

Odd but interesting….at first. It went on just a little too long for me…I was like “yeah, pine cones, we get it.” Started glancing at the counter to see how much time was left….that’s always a bad sign. Maybe Charles Bronson (liberally coated with Mandom) could have popped up with a six-shooter and blasted the woodpecker….

It did go on a bit for a commercial, so I just relaxed into it and pretended I was watching an entry in the animation festival. Pretty cool.

Wow. I am such a sucker for this kind of thing. I’d probably buy anything if it were hawked with adverts like this.
