Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gioia ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 10 March 2010 58 Comments

Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gioia

Giorgio Armani will launch Acqua di Gioia, a new fragrance for women, in June:

Water as a source of joy and pleasure.

A joyful thrill.

An addictive aquatic wood touched by the caress of sunny flower petals.

The notes feature crushed mint leaves, limone primo fiore, aquatic green accord, pink pepper, jasmine sambac, peony, cedar, labdanum and brown sugar accord.

Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gioia will be available in 30, 50 and 100 ml Eau de Toilette. It is available now for pre-order at Escentual in the UK. (via escentual)

Update ~ Acqua di Gioia was developed by perfumers Loc Dong, Anne Flipo and Dominique Ropion. The scent is "rooted in nature and in water" and was inspired by Armani's "visits to islands such as Pantelleria and Antigua". (via wwd)

Another update: see a review of Acqua di Gioia.

I don’t know. I’m not a huge fan of aquatics, but a caramelly one would at least be different!

This makes me happy…I was just thinking of caramel perfumy notes this morning! But not along quite the same lines. Don’t know, I’ll have to find a sample when it makes it to the US, I guess.

Can actually imagine a complimentary connection between green mint and brown sugar.

Q: Green mint & brown sugar is what I’d muddle at the bottom of a glass before adding rum, ice, and a dash of lime for a mojito!

I’ll definitely smell this for the heck of it, and it shouldn’t be hard to find. I had to double check that there is in fact, already an Acqua di Gio for women… I own a pre-perfumania bottle of the men’s original, which will now last me for-ev-er, because I only want to smell it maybe twice a year. It’s not awful, though. This may not be bad either, though probably not the most original thing in the world.

I found out that “primofiore” refers to a grade of lemon fruit (maybe only a classification used in Italy?) produced during the first flowering (citrus flowers most of the year), and harvested October-April — known for being particularly intense, with higher acid and greater juice yield. Anyway, just thought I’d share since I was curious.

Robin, This is a good example of your post yesterday about fragrance notes and families. I can’t wrap my mind around how this might smell. It sounds unique in the world of aquatics, but that isn’t my fave category so I have no idea…

I’ll be interested to give this one a sniff. I tend to loathe scents with aquatic notes (a traumatic mid-’90s mugging by Eau d’Issey has left me with chronic Calone PTSD), but my best friend in the world wears Acqua di Gio. And while it happily embraces every sea-glass-coloured ’90s perfume cliche, it still smells genuinely wonderful on my beautiful blonde free spirit. I’d love to know if this one is slightly more assertive and interesting. I’d love to be able to rope her into my sniffing adventures with it.

I’m also delighted to see that the trend for issuing 30ml bottles seems to be continuing. I fervently hope that people buy them, and prove to the marketing gnomes that it really IS worth their while to offer smaller amounts.

I’m such a sucker for mint, I’ll definitely give this a try. This sounds very refreshing, actually, as long as the sugar accord isn’t too syrupy. Thank you for the info, as usual :-)

The green is engaging….but it sounds like a bit of a mess to me. That said, if I see it while out and about I’ll have to sniff it to satisfy my curiosity….but on skin only if I have a good supply of hand wipes in my purse.

Yeah, I was totally on board with it until I got to “brown sugar.” Whuh?

Although, you know, I always make fresh lemonade with brown sugar now. It was an accident the first time, and it turned out so well that now it’s a treat. The brown sugar keeps the acidity down a bit.

So I may *have* to go sniff this.

A happy accident! I’ll have to try that—I do love lemonade (real lemonade….at least real-ish)
I’ve got a couple BtV samples around here somewhere….all I remember was that they weren’t anything to write home about and were terribly over-priced. I’m pretty sure one was Energizer…don’t recall the other at all.

I thought potentially messy as well, but it piqued my curiosity. I did not like Idole d’Armani much, but I did really like the Armani Prive Ambre… (ambre something…).

They’ve definitely done a better job on the Prives than on the regular line, but then, I don’t adore all the Prives either. Armani just isn’t really my style, I guess!

Mmm… love me a good mojito. Guerlain Pour Homme, anyone?

I’m a (secret) fan of aquatics… having grown up on both the US north-eastern and western CA coastlines, I NEED to reminisce, no matter what NST says. I keep the husband outfitted in various aquatic/ozonic scents and am always on the lookout for good aquatics for women-oriented fragrances.

I’ll definitely check this out. :)

Does ANYONE Remember the Original Gio Di Giorgio Armani? That one was a Beauty! I don’t know WHY that one didn’t succeed like the far far lesser “Acqua” Versions for men and Women! this does sound however intriguing… Bottle is Killer! and I LOVE Guerlain Pour Homme Actually! Smashing Stuff!

It’s high time they redid Acqua di Gio. How old is it really? I wore Acqua di Gio 12 years back and loved every drop but did not feel the need to repurchase. The fragrance is certainly older.

I mean, look at Diamonds, look at Mania, look at the cylindrical series of all colors, look at Code … they all got flankers while Acqua di Gio, one of their best sellers, had none! It was … odd!

The new bottle is very nice and the notes sound great except for the brown sugar, not that I dislike brown sugar but it seems odd in that composition. Definitely sniff-worthy. I’d love to wear an Armani creation again, after Acqua di Gio no other resonated with me.

I don’t mind aquatics done right – I didn’t mind AdGio, but it was just too strong for me. I wish they’d left the pink pepper out, as I can’t stand it, but am intrigued by the rest – could be nice. The brown sugar doesn’t scare me especially as seeing it with lemon just makes me think Fresh Sugar, which was well done with an interesting carmelized note.

Pigoletto, you’re so right and the phrase you coined summs it up in a few words.
I guess this scent shall be a bit “stronger” alnd longer lasting as is the scent fashion nowadays. and I can bet it WILL smell like a peferct cocktails should. The winter reign of oudhs is over, now boozy scents shall take to the stage….Guerlain’s Homme, this Armani, “sudden” increase in sale of niche citrusy (as every spring), but boozy perfumes. My guess is classics of Profumum Roma might fare well this summer with extra investement into ads.

French Sephora is giving out 1.5 ml EdPs already.

I’m afraid I don’t have the nose or experience to provide a proper review, but generally speaking, after the top notes, it feels very much like the candy floss experience – the vendor spins you a big puff and while you’re standing there paying, your nostrils fill with the smell of the sweet, cooked sugar lining the insides of the hot machine.

The top notes, mint and limone are just that, fresh but not entirely crisp, and right now, a half hour after application, it has descended into a sweet, syrupy mess.

    Not for me, personally.

I got to sniff it finally. I’d say watery and sugary. I’d always go for the men’s Aqua di Gio. Starting with Diamonds their feminine scents have just been pleasant but forgetable.
    Are the exclusives superior?

is it available over in the US yet? it’s here in the UK.
I’m getting this next year for spring and summer.

it reminds me of water and makes me imagine being in a river in a rainforest but it doesn’t smell particularly blue or marine-like. it does start off quite sweet but not sugary. OH, it’s just starting to fade now after about and I can smell the mint, there hasn’t been a trace of it until the end.

I think the print advert captures a little segment of the scent=rainforest. probably Giorgio Armani’s best fragrance.

the cap looks like a pearl. but I can’t quite put my finger on what the bottle looks like. a leaf, seaweed, jellyfish ???
