Posted by Robin on 12 February 2010 29 Comments

Gucci by Gucci Sport Pour Homme

Gucci has launched Gucci by Gucci Sport Pour Homme, a new aromatic citrus fragrance for men.

The notes include grapefruit, mandarin, cypress, cardamom, juniper berry, fig, vetiver, ambrette and patchouli.

Gucci by Gucci Sport Pour Homme is available in 50 and 90 ml Eau de Toilette. (via gucci, parfuemerie-springer.de)

James Franco for Gucci Sport

Update ~ Gucci by Gucci Sport Pour Homme is fronted by actor James Franco, who also fronted the original Gucci by Gucci Pour Homme, and is meant to "expand the story of the scent into a man’s free time and the more casual moments in his life". (via wwd)

i like that color green. The notes sound good too, but probably will smell like so many other spring/summer limited edition stuff.

Ha! I was liking it for the green as well.
Unfortunately they lead off with grapefruit….and I have yet to meet a grapefruit (other than at the breakfast table) that I like and that likes me.

It actually doesn’t sound bad, but “sport” fragrances usually turn out to be a disappointment. I’ll give it a shot when I see it though!

Yeah, I feel like “sport” is more of a warning label.

It’s not the most unusual idea for a cologne, but it does sound nice and there’s lots of “mens'” fragrances I love to wear.

As if the original wasn’t sporty enough….light, slightly woodsy, fresh.

I never did get around to smelling the men’s. The women’s was very strong.

You know what’s funny? The men’s GbG I found very boring but I LOVE and own the women’s GbG. It is perfect for winter here in Michigan. I love warm fragrances and this really fits the bill.

From what I’ve heard of the men’s, the women’s does sound better, so why not…

hmmm…I didn’t like the original one, but this one sounds interesting: grapefruit, fig plus vetiver…? Surely worth a try!

I too am getting sick of design houses adding “sport” to a fragrance name as if the word has some kind of talismanic power to boost sales.

What exactly is the appeal? Why on earth would adding “sport” to the name of a fragrance render it desirable? Or is it just some shoddy perfume that wasn’t quite good enough to warrant it’s own name?

The worst example of this in my opinion was Habit Rouge Sport. This revered fragrance is worth of its standalone status without having to suck up to the modern vogue of suffixation. Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with creating, as Guerlain have, an EDP formulation, but at least that is developing the original fragrance with a degree of respect to the original’s lineage.

Think about it, why do it? I mean, you don’t have a Mitsouko Sport do you, or a Bois Des Iles Sport do you?

Or maybe they think men are so stupid that, in order for men to feel comfortable wearing fragrance they have to add something which alludes to some kind of macho acceptability.

Why don’t they go the whole hog and just produce a “Allure Big Muscles” or a Ambre Narguile Tough Trucker, or maybe even a Gucci Nobile Linebacker?

I for one will be avoiding this latest “Sport” flanker simply out of curmudgeonly disdain for this Marketing Department’s staid and lame excuse for milking the marketplace.

I have a feeling they appeal to younger men who want to wear fragrance but find most dept store scents too perfume-y. Who knows.

I didn’t care for the original at all, and especially not when Gucci somehow managed to make the usually delicious James Franco look dazed and lost and confused.

I’m hoping the fig in this is more pronounced.

Lots of fig + vetiver would be fine with me.

Fig plus vetiver – THAT would be the perfect late summer/early fall scent.

    tried it today

    truly underwhelming.

smelled like a less sharp version of Quiksilver for men, itself being a rather ‘cheap’, drugstore fragrance.

surely it will sell well, since it smells like a Boss or Armani frag. not to forget that the outside white box has the signature red and green stripe.
