By Kilian Rose Oud ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 28 January 2010 66 Comments

By Kilian Rose Oud

By Kilian will launch Rose Oud, the second fragrance in the Arabian Nights collection. The first was Pure Oud; reportedly Rose Oud will be followed by three more fragrances based on incense, amber and musk respectively.

ROSE OUD by Kilian is a more feminine interpretation of Oud by [perfumer] Calice Becker, using the luxurious petals of the Turkish Rose. This unusual combination of Rose with Oud in a fragrance gives birth to a scent that is both mysterious, rich and opulent yet comfortably familiar. As always now, unexpected accords become Kilian’s signature.

By Kilian Rose Oud will be available in 50 ml Eau de Parfum. (via bykilian)

Update: the notes for Rose Oud include rose, saffron, cardamom, oud and patchouli, and it will cost $395 when it launches in March. (via wwd)

Since when is rose and oud an unusual combination? Im pretty sure all of Montale’s ouds have that mix.

Just what I was thinking. There’s also Czech & Speake Dark Rose which has been around for a little while.

yeah, what Ric said. Seems to me that the Rose/Oud combination is pretty pervasive.

Maybe they mean THIS unusual combination… like the way they’re combining it is somehow “different,” even though there are like 87 fragrances based on that combo. I’m reaching here…

Yeah. Who knows, it could be fabulously unusual. I just think at this point I couldn’t possibly be the only one burned out on oud. And 3 more to come…

She got me with Back to Black even though I was sure I didn’t like honey and raspberry. I also thought I didn’t like rose fragrances until I tried Epic Woman, so I will probably give this a try. I hate the price, but I’m a sucker for the packaging – I just love little boxes and the carved box with the silver key and silk tassel are hard to resist. I’m sure I only need one, not a dresser full, so I’ll probably go for the travel refills instead. One ounce of juice is $70, vs. the full presentation which is $225 for a 50ml. “eco-bottle.”

Really? you like Back to Black? hmmm, I wouldn’t have thought that one would grab you.
Oh, Epic woman is glorious—love the stuff—but I don’t get any rose at all in it! But then Lyric is ‘rose’ too—and to me it’s all about wood, only a smidge of rose…..isn’t perfume grand?

        Another Epic Woman fan!!!
I’m wearing it today (I just received a sample a couple of days ago!)
I get a lot of rose, oud and spicy sandalwood, and for the first time the combination works for me. It smells delicious and complex and as if a lot of care has been put in the ingredients and to strike that perfect balance…
        I fear I might need a FB of Epic…

boojum, it is the first amouage that works form me too (I appreciate Lyric until the drydown, when I’m struck by an army of white musks…).
I find Epic woman has certain similarities with OJ Ormonde Woman (if that helps, I don’t wear my OW sample very often), but with rose and spices and sandalwood replacing the violet-truffle and brightening everything up.
Epic is really very beautiful, you should try it!

I feel your pain!! Isn’t if funny how that one tiny 1ml sample can suck $300 right out of your wallet with the force of an industrial-truck-mounted suction cleaning system??? It is , of course, worth every single penny.

Yes, one little 1ml. vial sent to you by Daisy. Actually, the samples you sent have only cost me $110 so far, but I haven’t ordered the Frapin yet, and I’m still testing the other eight you included!

      • Julia says:

I didn’t think Back to Black would grab me either, but it did. I get tons of peppery, rosy incense from Epic Woman. I have an antique rose garden and it reminds me of the spicy smell of Cecile Brunner roses. I’ve only tested Lyric Woman once and I need to give it more attention. I’m hesitating a little because I’m pretty sure I will need the whole collection. Good thing I am opening up four new classes this month. I guess I need to tell my husband to book the band more since I get his take for perfume. Anybody interested in having the best local band in Texas for the last 30 years (really – even Texas Monthly said so) at their next event, call me. All proceeds go directly to Amouage.

some in Lyric—especially in the beginning…2 hours in = woods
Epic is very peppery to me, so maybe there’s rose but my nostrils are so busy sucking in all the peppery smells that the rose just gives up! I’m sitting here sniffing the bottle nozzle right now (snifff snifffff) nope, no rose. Can’t put any on—I’ve done a complete body spray down with L’Ame Soeur today already—I’m trying to find the “skanky” note that Cynthia swears in in there…..I got nuthin

I really, really liked Pure Oud — not enough to go broke buying it, but if I had the dough, sigh… (hint hint, any potential sugar daddies reading this!) — and I’m actually quite excited about these upcoming ones, although they don’t sound particularly groundbreaking. Does anyone know if they’re going to cost an arm and a leg like the Pure Oud, i.e. around 400 bucks?

Sadly, the Pure Oud wasn’t available in the travel refills that I was able to score for Back to Black – so, if the Rose Oud follows the same formula, it won’t be either.

Actually, I don’t know that I’m sad at all – they wouldn’t even give out samples of Pure Oud and I didn’t want to do a skin test that day, but I didn’t care for the sniff that I gave it on paper.

The travel size may be available in the near future. They sort of delay that size a bit until people buy the full sized bottle. And go to Aedes and buy something small, a lotion or something and you get 5-6 free samples of your choice. They have Pure Oud and will give you a sample. IF they just got Rose Oud they’ll sample that too. They are marvelously generous with their customers.

Is that series only available through the Killian website? I ordered Back to Black from Bergdorf’s, but they don’t carry Pure Oud.
I agree with Donald about Calice Becker. I’ve loved everything I’ve tried by her.

I don’t live anywhere near a Bergdorf’s, so I’m only working with what they have online. I also had a gift card, so I was limited to Bergdorf or Neiman-Marcus.

Weirdly, I don’t think anywhere I know of that carries Kilian (Aedes, Bergdorfs, Luckyscent) puts the Pure Oud online. I wonder why?

          • Julia says:
            29 January 2010 at 2:00 pm

Curious. I know that you have to already have the bottle to get a refill, but I don’t know how they would enforce that. You can get a 100ml. refill at Lucky Scent without proving that you already have the bottle. Maybe they are not offering them through department stores online so people don’t try to buy just the travel refills or something.

I believe Kilians is asking their distributors not to sell the Pure Oud online except to their special “in the know” customers. To see it at luckyscent, type in http://www.luckyscent.com/kilian. For Bergdorf Goodman’s, you have to call them.

    • Robin says:
      28 January 2010 at 1:48 pm

They seem to be keeping the Arabian Nights things under tighter distribution, so far, but maybe they’ll add travel sets later?

Of course the ad copy is silly; this isn’t at all an original group of notes. However, it’s created by the divine Calice Becker, which means it stands a good chance of distinguishing itself from the glut of other ouds out there.

She rarely has a misstep, and this is surely worth trying.

I am honestly not sure at this point that anybody can do anything with rose + oud that is going to interest me. I was already burned out before L’Artisan launched theirs.

R: I actually like rose+oud but I’m wayyy burned out on the glut too (still, perhaps better than fruity floral?) I assume you’ve tried the L’A? I need to pull it out again but I don’t think I get a bit of rose in that… it’s CUMIN, oud, and something animalic that creates a smell like BO on steroids (literally). And I rarely detect BO in fragrances. It’s interesting, in a weird way, but I’d sure as heck never buy it even though I love love the bottle.

Joe, I’ve added the notes to the article above. Rose + oud + saffron. We’ll see what they do with it, but c’mon, we’ve plenty of those already — it’s becoming like cologne — every brand needs one, apparently.

Yes, already reviewed the LA. I don’t really get BO, but didn’t love it — as I said, kind of burned out on oud at this point.

Dang. I was going to send you some of my L’A Al Oudh because it is b.o. on me, too. It’s not at bad as some (looking at you Santal de Mysore) but I really can’t do cumin. I thought it was just my nose, but I took some frags with oud to a friend’s house and was going to give her PdN Maharanih because it was so bad on me. She tried it on and it was so beautiful on her I started to think maybe I had misread it, but no. When I sprayed it on my arm we both smelled the stench of curry armpits that overpowered the cat box.

It’s not an unusual combination but I’d still like to try it. Despite my resisting for quite a while, I think I’m going to break down and pick up the discovery set at Lucky Scent. I liked Back to Black and noted it’s in there, and I’ve wanted to try others from the line so I figure I might as well.

Speaking of glorious rose, today I’m wearing Rosasi’s Arba Wardat and it’s just beautiful. It’s full bodied, rich, a bit fruity but just stunning, and I’m afraid there must be a bottle out there with my name on it. Credit to Daisy for introducing addicting me to such a perfect and wintery bit of rose paradise. I’ve also fallen really hard for a couple Ajmals and have even caught myself dreamily anticipating the many other yet undiscovered treasures that surely must be making their way to the wider perfume world from the middle east, because my want list isn’t long enough yet.

I’m so lucky (and happy) that I don’t have a By Kilian addiction at all. Nothing they do makes my pulse race, even when they’re nice. I actually did get a little tachycardia when I read the Back to Black description, but when I finally smelled it I was underwhelmed at best, slightly repulsed at worst (nope… don’t like it).

All these ouds? All my oud bases seem covered by a few Montales (also C&S Dark Rose), and I’m happy with them. I’m always open minded to smell new ones, but at BK prices… nah.

When I read the description of Straight to Heaven, I thought it would be perfect, and I ordered a sample. On me, it smells of the morning after a *really* heavy night of drinking, and I re-dubbed it Straight to Hell. Just awful. The one other ByK I tried did nothing for me either, and at those prices, I haven’t felt compelled to try any since.

I’m still searching for the perfect oud that doesn’t turn sweaty on me. Most of the ones I’ve tried have “spices” – usually cumin – which always turns sweaty on me.

In fact I accidentally ordered two larger samples of Oud Wood. I guess I got distracted by everything else I was sampling and forgot about it. Just sprayed it and so far so good! Thanks, Tama

I’ve caught myself on a couple occasions when I’ve thought I don’t need another bottle of something. And then it starts haunting me and before I know it, it’s on the way. Just when I think it’s safe to put away a sample and forget about it… Really, I think I just need a dedicated UPS/USPS driver for my address alone. They could probably find my house blind-folded at this point.

I’m a year late missing the boat, but I just got my sample of this, and wanted to leave my 2 scents. . .
At first sniff, this has a lovely boozy incense and rose smell. It is very close to a true rose, like sticking my nose in a full, lush bloom–more than anything else that I’ve sniffed (although admittedly that is a small number). It is very nice and has excellent lasting power. I could easily smell it on my wrist in the morning after applying some the night before, although the incense lasts longer than the rose. Luckily, although it is very nice, it is not love–$400 saved! (I guess I can save that money for some Amouage. . .)
