Demeter Chai Tea ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 8 November 2009 49 Comments

Demeter Chai Tea perfume

The latest addition to Demeter's's fragrance library is Chai Tea:

Demeter’s Chai Tea is a soft, warm, aromatic mixture of eastern spices and herbs, including cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, star anise, peppercorn, and cloves, in a base of black tea, milk and sugar.

Demeter Chai Tea is available in 15, 30 or 120 ml Cologne ($6 – $39.50) and in matching bath & body products. (via demeterfragrance)

Demeter’s always sound so very yummy. Unfortunately I’ve not come across a single one that doesn’t turn strange and sythetic/plastic-y on skin. They usually end up spritzed on a cotton ball sitting on a dish, being used as air freshener. But that’s okay, enjoy the topnotes until the cotton is dry…re-wet as needed….with120mls there’s plenty.

I agree that most of them have a plastic note in the mix, but I’ve enjoyed Quince enormously, it’s a great autumnal harvest/holiday scent and it doesn’t have the plastic note to my nose. It’s really a great sleeper – true to life, less sweet than most fruit scents with a hint of pucker, and it hasn’t changed on me the way the pear note in Petit Guerlain has.

Ginger ale is another hit ‘though the room spray of it I just ordered seemed off. And then at the other end of the spectrum I bought some kind of spicy jelly belly thing unsniffed that turned out to be a total scrubber.

The scrubber was Sugar & Spice, “a unique and compelling combination of hot cinnamon, spicy jalapeno pepper, cane sugar, bubble gum and tutti-fruitti Jelly Belly jelly beans.” And that’s exactly what it is! A lesson learned on researching scents before getting too trigger happy on ebay…

I agree – they are so fun and so affordable as to be pretty much irresistible, but all the ones I’ve tried have given me a headache within seconds. That’s not to say I won’t keep trying more… :)

Oh, wow, Demeter is totally new to me. I clicked on the link and just about went catatonic with indecision: Beet Root, Earl Grey Tea? What does Funeral Home smell like? And, as a long time Magritte fan, I must smell This Is Not A Pipe. Giant Sequoia? Madeline? Paperback? Pomegranate? Thunderstorm? Do these really smell syntheticky/plasticky? Is this a line worth trying and, if so, which ones? I’m trying to be careful with perfume shopping this week as I bought a rather large batch of Breath Of God since I found out here that they’re closing. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

The $6 minis are the way to go with Demeter. I like quite a few of them quite well. I have heard Funeral Home is really nice – lots of flowers. Most of them smell exactly how they sound. The most unusual one I have is probably Earthworm, which, when layered with florals, adds a damp loamy earth scent. They are not super-high grade but definitely fun. They often offer a freebie with purchase – I try to wait until they have one I might wear – I got Banana Flambe or something once and it is a bit weird.

Bohoteacher, if you look at the Perfume Reviews section (see menu at top or bottom) you’ll see quite a few Demeter reviews. I think they’re hit or miss…I really like some of them, not others. And as you can see from the comments above, not everyone likes them!

Vanilla Cake is yummy—just not on my skin. Oh and Tama sent me some Dandelion and that is pretty too.
We aren’t back to perfumistas on my porch brandishing pitchforks and torches again, are we? ( I hate it when that happens.)

Pitchforks for what? Because you don’t like Demeter? Even people who insult Iris Silver Mist don’t get pitchforks & torches from me!

Bee, that must be a really unique Lutens-scented carrot. Must be yummie too :) Could I get a sample? :)

In my experience the older Christopher Brosius scents are better than the newer Jelly Belly/Hersey’s scents. I enjoyed beet root – it’s earthy. In my experience, the more esoteric scents are better sprayed than in the pour bottles that the “humongous minis” come in. Paint and crayon were too subtle for my taste. Paperback is a classic. Quince is a personal favorite, and it goes quite well with Tarnish (both work well as minis). Funeral Home is a strong lilly scent (with oiled wood) if you like that sort of thing. I also remember liking Holy Smoke and Holy Water – incense and cold marble respectively.

I love Demeter’s Earl Grey tea, but it lasts literally 2 minutes on me. Others that I’ve like are Holy Smoke, Holy Water, Bonfire, Egg Nog, Meyer Lemon, and Pipe Tobacco.

It can be fun to play around with combinations, too. My niece and I combined Frasier Fir, Bonfire, and Earthworm and called it “Camping.” She’d like to see them make one called “Old Canvas Tent” and then “Camping” would be perfect!

Has anyone ever tried the matching products? Chai lotion could be a really yummy thing, and I liked Sawdust enough that if the lotion lasted a bit, it would be great for layering.

I have tried the Neroli bath oil, which I liked ok but didn’t love, and the Wet Garden shower gel, which I couldn’t stand, but luckily (and strangely) my husband loved and has consequently been using up (although banished to the guest bathroom to do so!).

I like Demeter and even though the chai tea doesn’t seem to be quite as trendy as a few years back, this does sound good for the season. Daisy, I love your idea for an air freshener! That would be perfect for my little half-bath downstairs when guests visit for the season. Particularly if they have pine and cinnamon scents. And I’m really curious about champagne de bois now. I get so gloriously overwhelmed when visiting SSS or DSH’s site, even when I try to restrict myself to just a handful of choices. :)

I haven’t been to Demeter’s site in ages because I, too, recall my inner perfumista practically drowning in sheer covetousness at all the layering possibilities and had to back away before I ended up with a ginormous order. Cold Marble and Funeral Home together sound so lovely. Could you call it Crypt? :)

I love to drink Chai tea and love the smell of it, so I have a feeling I would like this. It’s the perfect time of year to release it. Makes me want to put a pot of simmering potpourri on the stove. Hmm – that’s a good idea – think I’ll do just that! ;-)

Chai is my absolute favorite tea! I drink the tea, I LOVE chai tea lattes, chai tea cakes, everything chai!! Will have to try this when I see it. I think Hilarys With Love had chai in it and I LOVED it! I wonder if chai is in any other fragrances?

I believe Bvlgari Omnia had chai tea, but I could be wrong. I haven’t tried it yet but the list of notes looks fantastic. It apparently suffers from questionable staying power as well, so wearing it over a chai lotion would probably help.

I have a chai tea lotion from ‘Desert Essence’- found in the organic section of Fred Meyer. I like it a lot, and it’s very strong and long lasting- if I put it on in the morning, I’m set for the day, scent-wise! (And the lotion part of it works well too.)

Chai is such a comforting scent when emanating from my mug – would love to try this.

PS – for those who find scents fleeting, anchor it with a daub of Vaseline on your skin. Works wonders.
