Odin Nomad, Owari & Century ~ new fragrances

Posted by Robin on 16 September 2009 35 Comments

Odin Nomad, Owari & Century

New York-based clothing retailer Odin will launch a trio of fragrances next month:

01 Nomad ~ "Under the spice trade routes comes an exotic wealth of rare scents. Orient attracts rich notes of juniper berries and cedar leaves from the high regions of the Himalayan Mountains with mysterious Palmarosa and spicy black pepper. Lingering in the air is the warmth of tonka beans blended with the sultry seduction of sandalwoods from the West Indian shores." Additional notes include bergamot, heliotrope and grey musk.

02 Owari ~ "From the far ends of the earth comes a fragrance transparent in nature. Owari opens up with rare mandarins from the Japanese province of Owari and freshly crushed grapefruit leaves. The heart consists of the intensely vibrant cubed pepper and Tonkin musk from the Chinese mountains." Additional notes include bergamot, amyris wood, neroli, cedar and golden amber.

03 Century ~ "Inspired by ancient Cypress comes a modern interpretation of the chypre family. Complex in structure but simple in character. Century captivates the senses with silver birch, Cypress and forest mint. Liquid myrrh combines with vetiver, patchouli and moss. Leaving a warm mysterious alchemy of black musk and true amber."

Odin 01 Nomad, 02 Owari and 03 Century will be available in 100 ml Eau de Toilette ($110) at the Odin boutiques and at Aedes in New York, Fred Segal in Los Angeles. (via press release, additional information via wwd)

These sound pleasant, and fairly intellectual, albeit rather masculine and therefore just Not My Thing. Nice to see some traditional-sounding notes, as opposed to “moist jasmine” and “cotton candy”, whatever may ACTUALLY be in there.

It’s interesting…I believe they are mainly a men’s retailer, but there’s no mention of gender in the press materials for the scents.

I think that I must have new-scent fatigue – once I saw that there was three of them, I couldn’t make myself do more than skim the notes for all three.

Yes, it’s stressful! I think I’ll just wait until you review them, and not get caught up in all the announcements. You must get overwhelmed at times, Robin!

I have to remind myself not to get caught up too…there’s too much stuff to smell everything.

These all sound interesting to me…particularly Nomad. The notes and bottle design do seem rather masculine but I tend toward masculines anyhow. I’m feeling extra “manly” today since Boojum alerted me to the entry for M7 (one of my very favorites) at Fragrantica: referring to it as so intensely masculine that women, even ones who like guy scents, won’t want to wear it…….(we laughed) I love M7 and as far as I can tell, I haven’t sprouted any extra parts (yet). 😉

Eeek – I love M7, too and the CEO thinks that it’s really sexy on me, too. He won’t wear now, even though it’s a “guy” scent because he associates with me.

I love it when I read what women “can’t” wear! There’s a lot of that at Basenotes, too.

Yes, me too……I’ll have to give my fridge a wide berth now that I know M7 is far too manly for me…there’s 2 back up bottles on the bottom shelf…..ridiculous!

I once read something similar about Black Tourmaline — the grown-up, Internet equivalent of a hand-painted “BOYZ ONLE” sign on the treehouse. All I can say is it smells freakin’ fabulous on me, so eat your heart out, guys!

I wonder what ‘cubed pepper’ might be?

You know, I wonder if it’s a typo for ‘cubeb’ pepper. It’s like black pepper but with a little stem attached, and is a little more camphorous than black pepper.

Must be…and who can blame them? I’ve never heard of cubeb.

I think it’s a mistranslation of litsea cubeba, which smells citrusy (and thus could be called “intensely vibrant”) and whose Mandarin name translates as “mountain pepper.”

On a broader topic, when I see a clothing retailer launching a fragrance line these days, all I can think is that nobody can afford their clothes anymore and the only way they can rake in some bucks is to sell scent.

The citrusy one seems even more likely, since there is a lot of citrus going on in the fragrance.

In my own head I was picturing something like a sugar cube, but with pepper. Now I’m kind of disappointed to hear that it was most likely a typo. I was kind of excited about the pepper cube.

LOL —oh! the pepper cube! That is so you Kitty! I’ve got one eye all squinted up trying to imagine the pepper corn large enough to be cubed…..and now instead of a huge pepper grinder I’m imagining the waiter with a large bowl full of black sugar-cube-sized pepper cubes and a big pair of tongs…..Hello, my name is Armand, might I interest you in some freshly cubed pepper? heh heh, yes that’s right those bizarre images that pop into my head are always fully formed.(Armand is kinda cute too)

You guys are really nuts, or you need a hobby or something. Ooops, that’s right… you already have a verrrry expensive hobby.

I’m glad Mercurygirl filled in the blanks, though. Always learning something at NST.

That would be so fun – you could drop a whole pepper lump into your soup and watch it slowly melt as you lazily swirl the soup around with your spoon, like a sugar lump in tea. And one would require a set of special pepper tongs (solid silver, of course) with which to have Armand serve such a delicacy to you…

That’s it–now my life’s mission is to create the pepper cube! (And following that, the pepper cube tongs…)

Owari and Nomad look fantastic. I’m not quite as sure about Century, but I’d still try it. Mint and Cypress seems like it might smell like an Arabic dish. Yummy to eat but I don’t know if I want to smell like that. But toss in a little amber to sweeten it up and who knows.
