Olivier Durbano Turquoise ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 14 June 2009 22 Comments

Olivier Durbano Turquoise perfumeOlivier Durbano has launched Turquoise, the latest fragrance in the "Stone Poem Jewels" series:

Treasured by the ancients as a stone celebrating the spirits of both the sea and the sky, the otherworldly appeal of Turquoise has endured the ages. Striking a delicate balance between the earthbound and the atmospheric, this masterfully crafted perfume is every bit as breathtaking as a fathomless ocean or a sweeping sky.

Turquoise features notes of turpentine, rose berry, elemi, Somalian oliban incense, coriander, juniper, fragrant reed, lotus, fucus seaweed, lily, everlasting flower, honey, myrrh wood and ambergris.

Olivier Durbano Turquoise is available in 100 ml Eau de Parfum, and can be purchased now at Luckyscent for $140. (via luckyscent)

I know I haven’t seen it all by a long shot, but I believe this is my first encounter with turpentine as a note! This is so odd as to be alluring. I haven’t smelled any Durbanos – maybe I need to take a look.

CdG Hinoki has a turpentine note!

Tama, try the Black Tourmaline (once summer’s over — it would be torture in the heat). It’s dry, spicy, leathery, and campfire-smoky — sort of like Lonestar Memories without the prettiness.

Man, I can’t wait to try this. I love the smell of turpentine. I sense a new round of sampling.

I’d love to try this one too. I’ve tried the other Durbanos and none of them quite worked for me, but turpentine sounds pretty good!

Might be fun. Wish that color was not so mouthwash-y.

What does fucus seaweed smell like anyway? Going by the name it doesn’t sound that appealing, although I have to say the fragrance itself sound very interesting! Actually, this entire line sound very cool, does anyone know if it is sold anywhere in New York? Thanks….

        Who knows? Never smelled any.

Don’t know if OD is in NY anywhere…Luckyscent is the only OD retailer in the US that I know about.

Durbano’s been cranking them out lately, no?
I at least appreciate all of his previous scents, so I’ll certainly sample this one, too. The Tourmalin Noir and the purple one (name slips my mind) are my faves, so far.

I think when they started they gave a specific # — maybe 7 — that they would do? So I assume these were planned in advance (not that it makes any difference)

Yes, I’m pretty sure the set is planned for 7 scents, and he is only releasing at the most 1 a year, so it’s not like a deluge. I have ordered a sample and will post again once I’ve smelled it. I loved CdG Hinoki and Black Tourmanline, so I’m hoping this will be a winner.

Okay, I smelled this last night. Eh. The turpentine top note is quite prominent, and it’s not as nicely done as the CdG Monocle Hinoki. It smells rather like floor cleaner for at least the first 15-20 minutes. The drydown was okay, more incensey than floor cleaner, but nothing to write home about. I still prefer Rock Crystal and Black Tourmaline by far.

I’ve just tried it too, and although it didn’t smell quite like floor cleaner to me, it has a note (the seaweed) that I think—if I’m identifying it correctly—might be calone? I’ve smelled it in several other things recently (Vanille Galante especially, AG Un Matin d’Orage, a little bit in Magnolia Romana) and I find it just about unbearable.

Years ago I wore White Linen Breeze (long since discontinued, I think, but a flanker of the original WL), and it had something they called “seashore accord” which didn’t strike me at all the same way—it was more like warm sand and maybe a little seaweed-ish, but pleasant. Aqua Motu reminds me a little of that, even though they don’t really smell anything alike, but it conveys “seashore” or “aquatic” without that jarring note I get from this. I know calone has been around for a long time, but is there something new they’re doing with it…?

Ah, if it’s aquatic I probably won’t love it either. Don’t know if there’s something new they’re doing w/ calone — I don’t pay much attention to aromachemicals. Am pretty sure Calone is not the only aromachemical that produces a melony aquatic note though.

        “Melony”—that’s it exactly!

I just tried my sample and meh. It seems too mouthwashy for me and definitely aquatic. It doesn’t smell exactly melon-y to me, more minty, even though there is no mint. Maybe it’s the juniper. I forgot completely about the turpentine and how that was what intrigued me. The drydown is okay, but ultimately I think that if I smelled this on someone else and I was snuggling up to them at the beach or something, then I would probably enjoy it much more than on myself. I’ll try it again, though.

Oh dear, mouthwashy & aquatic is not compelling, turpentine or no.
