Comme des Garcons + Daphne Guinness Daphne ~ new fragrance

Posted by Robin on 8 June 2009 50 Comments

Comme des Garcons + Daphne Guinness Daphne perfume

Socialite, heiress and fashion icon (she has been described as the best dressed woman in the world) Daphne Guinness will launch Daphne, her debut fragrance, in September. The scent was made in collaboration with Comme des Garçons. Guinness noted that perfume "...takes you away from the everyday and you are transported to something in your past. It’s a very mysterious thing."

Daphne was developed by perfumer Antoine Lie, and features notes of bitter orange, incense, saffron, rose centifolia, Tunisian jasmine, tuberose, iris, patchouli, oud, amber and vanilla.

Comme des Garçons + Daphne Guinness Daphne will be available in 50 ml Eau de Parfum for $140. (via wwd)

Well, I have no clue who that is. Lovely list of notes though. There is a shrub called Daphne that has a wonderful fragrance – that’s what I thought of when I saw the name of this perfume.

HA…we must live under the same rock — I only know about her because I looked her up when they first announced this fragrance.

Of course, I googled her, so I’m now in the know.

She’s more well-known in the high fashion circle, being a faithful client of haute couture houses like Valentino, Chanel and Givenchy (actually had her wedding dress made there). Daphne comes from a British aristocratic background and actually is one of the heirs/heiresses to the Guiness beer empire.

Don’t know of her either, but CdG + that list of notes = must try. One day when I’m fabulously wealthy, I’ll hire either CdG or Andy Tauer to concoct my vanity scent!

I second you on the andy tauer as my personal ‘nose’! I bet the search for a personal scent would be extremely fun with Andy at the helm! I’m wearing incense extreme layered with incense rose, and the dry down is delish!
All the notes in this Daphne frag sound like my cuppa tea. I’ll give it a go. However, I find I am so unimpressed with most scents I’ve tried lately. The more samples I sniff, the more hardcore perfumista I become, the less my olfactory palette is satisfied! And I also notice how I am drawn, time and again, back to Guerlain, Ormonde Jayne, Caron, Piguet – the classics, basically. Ah, and Andy of course…..

We must ALL live under that same rock – I’ve never heard of her either. But I too think the list of notes sounds wonderful – rose, incense, tuberose, saffron? yum. And patch/amber/vanilla usually works out to being wearable for me. OTOH, $140 for 5ml is out of my price range…

Yes, it’s expensive. I really, really want bottles of both of their prior collaborations…Monocle Hinoki & Stephen Jones, but I’m too cheap. This might join the list.

It’s a very un-CdG bottle, isn’t it? I read an interview somewhere with her where she said she was trying create (with this) a twist on cologne. Not the exact words but that was the gist.

Dang it’s crowded under this rock! Never heard of her, but at least that means that I don’t have all sorts of NEGATIVE feelings about her either.
Fragrance sounds nice though, I would like to try it….too bad I just placed a sample order with Luckyscent, it’ll be a while before the next one. But at $140 for 50ml….if it’s lovely maybe a split will turn up at scentsplits…otherwise? ouch!

I’ve heard of the family, just not this new sprig on the noble tree. Lady Caroline Blackwood was sort of interesting — nuts, but interesting — married to both Lucian Freud and Robert Lowell (not at the same time). That’s my trivia contribution for the day.

The perfume sounds very much worth a sniff, but whose past do I get transported to, exactly? Is there a scent of the collective past? I will be interested in how the saffron is handled — sometimes I love this note, and sometimes it is off-putting for me.

Yah, that’s probably pretty obvious, LOL, despite that generously inclusive ‘your past’. I don’t think Daphne is going to take me back to Riverside Drive, the Bronx Botanical Gardens, etc. I invite her to try, however.

In addittion to have her own fortune, Daphne married a Greek shipping magnate and then divorced him. She is a gorgeous, petite blond. I read an article in Vogue or Harper’s Bazaar a couple of years ago detailing the women who buy couture regularly. She was the nicest of the bunch in my opinion and seemingly down to earth.

I have a love-hate thing for Daphne. When I hear/read what she has to say in interviews she really sets me on edge some times and makes me grind my teeth. She seems to be part of her very own reality. Then there are those pictures of her when she looks positively like a clown swathed in every shining stone, feather and fabric she can afford. Her obsession in the past couple of years with hand-armour (read: tragic diamond covered gauntlets) left me speechless as well. HOWEVER…. When Daphne gets it right, she gets it REALLY right. She is absolutely gorgeous for her age and she has the sense and style (! yes, sometimes) to customize her own pieces and make extraordinary combinations that work, work, work. She is very, very edgy so the notes came as a surprise to me actually, I was expecting something more controversial from her.

Notes do sound nice though certainly not “edgy”, don’t they?

Fun fact: if Wikipedia is correct and she’s the daughter of Jonathan Guinness, then she’s the granddaughter of Diana Mosley. So if she sets people on edge, then I guess she comes by that ability honestly.

My thoughts exactly–she has a very edgy style, not afraid to mix and match things way before it is “de rigueur”. When I saw her name I was expecting really unusual combination of things so I was actually surprised that the notes are arguably conventional–I know the list is not always reliable so we’ll see.

Calgon … no Daphne — take me away!!! I’m imagining myself in a big bubble bath as we type!! (Am I dating myself here?)

It sounds really pretty. Hopefully it will smell as complex as the notes suggest. I’m all for more complex florals being created. And of course we all know that if it smells great it won’t matter how $$ it is!!

Anyone else read the Huff Po interview? She says she “loathes tropical flowers”. Her new signature scent, featuring jasmine and tuberose(!), must’ve changed her mind.

Or maybe it was just tropical flowers to decorate with?

Yes, I just read it. I guess she ment them in floral prints on dresse e.g. Otherwise I wonder what vanilla is doing in her perfume. I connotate vanilla pretty a lot with “tropical”.

Well, I can join the chorus of not knowing this person although I’ve heard the name. The notes sound very promising but it’s out of my price range…..still, maybe a decant? I might get around to smelling it in a few years; that seems to be my turnaround time for new releases!

Daphne is a fixture in British Vogue and annually makes the Vanity Fair best-dressed list. She’s known for having a quirky, singular style, so I’m very curious to see what her fragrance will smell like.

I can be wrong but Lulu is actually the daughter of Sir Miles Rivett-Carnac. The Guinness family is an aristocratic Irish Protestant family so I don’t think Daphne and Lulu are related.

    I am disappointed.

I thought that she’d at least put her namesake note in it. There are so few fragrances out there that use daphne. It’s like a meyer lemon mixed with a lily. I used to pick it on walks to school when I still lived in the northwest.

While i’m on the subject, does anyone know of a good daphne(flower) fragrance other then demeter’s?

This sound lovely! I’m so happy to see something that isn’t modernly safe. I wish incense would have more of a description. Churchy incense can be off-putting for me.

Am WELL Aware of whom Daphne Guinness was before the CDG Fragrance (Heiress to the Guinness Alcohol Fortune) and this sounds Especially Delightful… Not as Quirky as one might imagine knowing the pesonality of Ms. Guinness but scintillating nonetheless…. Love the simple clean bottle, Just Fabulous! Need to sniff this one as soon as it appears!

This is now available from Dover Street Market and I think it will be available worldwide in 2 weeks time (?).

Daphne Guiness is both individual and a little eccentric so I’m definitely curious what they’ve come up with.
