Google custom search

Posted by Robin on 12 April 2009 31 Comments

A quick note to those of you who wrote to ask me what happened to the custom search function we had at the old website: it's back, and can be accessed from the right sidebar or from the menu at the bottom of the page. I've been testing it today and it seems to be working fine, but do let me know if you have any problems with it.

Next on my to-do list: find the missing comments.

Thank you so much, Robin! However, the NST banner covers up all the Google info (including the search filter part) on the search results page. Is this happening to anyone else, or is it just me?

Drat. It was doing that to me this morning & thought I had it fixed. It’s now working for me in Windows Vista w/ Chrome, Firefox & IE 7, but admit I did not go test it in anything else & I should not have been so optimistic.

Can you tell me what your operating system, browser & browser version is?

Windows NT and Firefox 3.0.8 — I just tried it in my old Internet Explorer too (not sure which version), and it does the same thing.

Thanks so much. Am going to see if I can figure out what’s happening.

I’m so sorry, I’ve got Windows XP, not NT. All those Peeps must have made me delirious…

Peeps! They’ll eat your brain ;-)

Still working on this. I have a machine here w/ XP & Firefox 3.0.8 and the search is working fine on that one, no idea why.

I think if you clear your cache you’ll find it will work now…

I’m pretty sure it’s fine for me too — after I get to the search results page, there’s no field where I can modify the search criteria, but I think it’s supposed to be like that, right? However, I do see the filters where I can narrow the results to just NST, etc.

I just upgraded to IE 8.0 (Vista) and — related or not — I’m now getting a different wonky problem: the avatars in the comments creep down into the comment text. Just started doing that.

Yes, the place where you used to be able to modify the search criteria doesn’t seem to be there anymore. I really found that useful, but it appears you don’t get it if you put the results on your own page instead of on a Google-hosted page (which is how it worked at the old blogharbor site). I’ll have to see if I can do anything about that.

Have not yet loaded IE 8 and started testing with it, guess I’d better get on the ball.

Oh dear, so they do. Sigh. I hate IE. I’ll try to get that fixed later in the week…at least the comments are still readable.

Awesome, Robin! I’ve missed the search. So great to have it back!!!

I am also getting the NST banner across the top of the search – Windows XP with Firefox 3.0.8. Not sure how to figure out my version of XP…

Just to clarify…you should see the NST banner, but underneath the menu it should say “Search results”, with the actual results underneath that.

Or is the banner actually covering up the results?

        Hi Robin,

The banner is covering up the top portion of the results page, so I can’t see the section “Refine results…” and the first part of the search results.

And I’ve got good news on the Mac front: the custom search works fine in Firefox 3.0.8 and Safari 3.2.1 in Mac OS X 10.5.

It’s working great for me on both XP and Vista via firefox.

I absolutely love this site! You’ve single-handedly created my addiction; I want to smell everything that you review.

I had an idea for the site that might help out newbies like me… you must be swamped with work keeping up the blog, but I thought I’d mention it. I’ve bought samples of about 30 perfumes that you have reviewed. Since I’m new to perfumes, I don’t automatically know that perfume A is a chypre, or that B is a fruity floral. But I’ll buy a sample, based on your review, really like one and really not like another… if the perfume reviews/new-perfume-announcements had tags that were the perfume classification, it might help newbies like me (and so many others that “catch” the hobby from your blog) learn what they like and dislike by category. Or, they could have an “also try” list at the bottom of the post, so if we like Philosykos, we’ll know to try “Kerylos, which is more XXX” (or something like that). You could also add a plug in to the site that would allow your many, many devotees to “suggest” a classification or “vote” on an also-try list (it would be form based), so that it wouldn’t be as much work for you.

I really love this blog. It’s often the highlight of my day!! Thank you for ALL that you do!!

Glad the search is working, and thanks for the very kind words about NST.

That’s a great suggestion, and we are working on getting all the older articles tagged (there were 4500+ articles when we moved, so it’s going to take awhile). The one fly in the ointment is that I don’t always know the fragrance family, especially for new launches. The “also try list” might work very well with a plug in though, and I’ll look into that.

I am happy to see the search box back again. Yours is the best, being able to narrow the search to NST, blogs, etc. Thanks for working so hard on this ‘new’ site, Robin.

Yes, very happy to see the search feature back! I had missed it, particularly the way I can set a search for “perfume blogs.”

I have Windows XP and IE 8, and it works fine. Thanks again.

Hi Robin, I’m running the same as Mals and the search function is working perfectly. It makes feeding my addiction so much easier!
I can’t begin to tell you how much I love this blog….it’s my first internet destination everyday! Thank you so much for all the time, effort (and headaches, I’m certain) that you put into this . :-)
