Mistral Gardenia, Maoli Perfumes Colonia Dulce ~ new fragrances

Posted by Robin on 31 March 2009 17 Comments

Mistral Gardenia fragrance

Mistral has launched Gardenia:

Gardenia Royal Perfume is a rich, pure, and intoxicating as the gardenia flower itself. Freash green leaves, sweet jasmine, and delightful orange blossom rest on a warm layer of ceadarwood and vanilla to create a strong, sensuous legacy.

Mistral Gardenia is available in 50 ml Eau de Parfum. (via mistralsoap)

Other recent launches from Mistral: South Seas.

Maoli Perfumes Colonia Dulce fragranceMaoli Perfumes has launched their debut product, Colonia Dulce, an organic fragrance for children (or adults who want a light, refreshing perfume). The scent was developed by two tween boys who were homesick for Hawaii:

This unique, new scent was fashioned by a pair of talented brothers whose Hawaii reminiscence encouraged them to close their lemonade stand to open a perfume house to recreate their favorite island fragrances.

The tweens’ mom transformed their desire to develop “their own cologne that smells like sunshine” into a business learning experience, and she prepared a unit study in natural perfumery.

[...] Based on their favorite “back-home” scents, Kai and Kalani recreated this sweet classic with a unique, fun twist. At first breath, lime and mandarin sparkle with sweetness. A heart of neroli and jasmine blossom open with their delicate essence, subtly perfuming the path for the warmth only real vanilla could bring to a blend as vibrant as this one.

Maoli Colonia Dulce is available in 30 ml Eau de Cologne ($28) or in a 4 ml deluxe sample ($5); it can be purchased at Maoli Perfumes. (via press release)

Although the scent itself doesn’t sound earth-shattering, I like the story behind Maoli… There’s an amazing museum/design workshop here for kids and teens, and if I knew more about concocting my own scents, I’d offer to lead a perfume-making workshop. I can imagine the kids would have some ideas that could give Christopher Brosius a run for his money!

Wouldn’t that be fun! Materials presumably not cheap, unfortunately…

Love that Mistral bottle. Don’t you wish, sometimes, that you could choose the bottle and have any scent you liked put into it? I’d fill this one full of Vanille Galante.

That is such a cute and great story about Maoli. I love it. I feel like buying some just to support their business.

What’s funny though is that “Colonia Dulce” doesn’t evoke anything about Hawaii to me, unless you’re really stretching and making a reference to the ‘paniolo’ heritage.

I’m afraid I know absolutely nada about Hawaii. Perhaps they wanted a name that would be more widely understood, but sound fancier than “sweet cologne” 🙂

I just ordered a sample of the Maoli – even in my impoverished state I can pay $5 for a little Hawaii and a good story! “Colonia Dulce” may have something to do with the Portuguese influence. Hard to say.

Cool! That’s a cute little mini bottle, actually.

I’m loving the Maoli story. Good price point too for an organic perfume.

Gosh, don’t even think I notice bows! Now I’m trying to think if I own a single bottle with one…I must, but can’t think of what it would be.

Penhaligans Elixir is the only one I own with a bow. Love the story about the Hawaii boys.

Duh. Mistral! I never knew they made perfume. I use their soaps pretty regularly (It clicked when I looked at the other new frag article) and they are really nice. I have a lemon-ginger one waiting in my soap pile. I have also enjoyed one they have that has linden in it – linden-lettuce or something. I haven’t found a dud yet. I’ll have to see if I can find the frags.

They came out with them a year or so ago. I’ve heard the soaps are great, need to try them.

Tama, I can’t wait for your impression on Maoli. Here in Europe it’s more difficult to get it I guess. Jean Paul Gaultier said once “fashion is about sex”. I think success is about marketing and a good story, so good for Maoli, they’ve got it. Btw, I don’t believe a bit, but paradoxically I buy it.
