Going to extremes

Posted by Robin on 11 February 2008 17 Comments

"You don't see so much of a woman having just one signature scent anymore," she said adding that she knows one woman who owns more than 100 fragrances.

While that figure is extreme...

— "She" is Lindsey Pilcher, who works at Sephora in St. Louis. Quoted in Homework makes sense in buying scents in the St Louis Post-Dispatch.

Somehow, I don't thnk the quote ended with 'ly modest for a proper perfumista'.

    So, we're all freaks, then?

I guess I'm only a quarter of the way to being a circus attraction. I'd better get to work! ; )

Besides, when they crank out 800+ frags a year *somebody* has to buy it, right?! That article was pretty silly though, I hate how men are talked down to sometimes when it comes to gift giving (and a whole host of other things, but that's a different rant) as if they are 6 yr olds who have never shopped before.

Well exactly, what do they expect with 800+ new scents a year! We're keeping the perfume economy healthy :-)

If I had her Sephora discount…whew, the damage I could do!

oh… now I have only got 1 full-sized perfume, and I pretty much wear that every day (am not quite into other gift-with purchase, samples) but what's the virtue in having only one signature perfume? I don't know, I'd love to have more and am planning to get one in summer :)

The virtue, so it is said, is that people “know” you by your scent. I can see the point of that. It is how I used to feel about Coriandre. It was mine. Nobody else I knew wore it.

Still, no interest in having a signature scent now (obviously).

I'm sure I'd lose money working at Sephora.

I still wear my signature every night before bed and spray my linens when I first make the bed. It's still comforting and very “me”. I like the idea that my kids will always associate a certain perfume with me.

*R – I've decided that when I get my next bottle of Bill Blass (which should be soon) I'll have to decant you a bit, see what you make of it.

Yes, that's nice to think of, that your kids will associate a certain perfume with you. And thanks, that's kind of you!

I've given up on the notion of a signature scent. It's a never-ending and fruitless quest, I've found. There are so many beautiful perfumes it would be puritanical to confine yourself to just one.

    I'm otherwise monogamous, though :-)
