Serge Lutens was named Commandeur dans l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture earlier this week.
The award honors his contributions to French culture in the areas of cosmetic and perfume design, photography and filmmaking; you can read the full text of the speech by Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, the French Culture Minister, here.

Bravo! He so deserves it!
It is nice to see him with the medal around his neck 🙂
French medals are really fetching. LOL! I think he undoubtedly deserves this one. 🙂
I would counter that so are American medals, but of course, there are no medals in the US for *culture*. We don't reward contributions to culture, unless you count the Oscars, LOL…
Does this mean that Americans have no culture?! LOL!
Congrats to him!
BTW, how old is he ? He looks a bit weak in that pic. I am guessing 65-66.
Well, whatever culture we have is not government sponsored, that is for sure 🙂
He was born in '42 so you are right on target.
Lighting from high chandeliers is a KILLER! He may look frail but I hear he is as hard as nails! HA! And R, WHO would we honor in the US for contributions to PERFUMERY? K
Serge Lutens isnt just being honored for his oriental bombastic potions. Off the top of my head, I would guess in America Tom Ford comes closest to his overall fashion/culture achievements although I think Ford still has some ways to go (but then, hes not 65).
Contributions to perfumery that actually advance culture? Um, nobody. And can't think of much of anybody besides Serge Lutens who deserves the honor in France, either, can you?
LOL at “oriental bombastic potions”! Don't be picking on poor Serge when he just got a medal 🙂
Maybe Estee Lauder? Or would that be stretching it too much?
She was an incredible businesswoman, and in terms of the heritage of perfumery in the US, she is obviously an extremely important figure. But don't know that I'd say she advanced culture in any big way (?)
PBI. There's another pic here: http://www.vogue.fr/beaute/Serge_Lutens,_commandeur_des_Arts_et_des_Lettres-11986-info.htm (taken probably a few seconds before or after the one R posted, but he's smiling a little bit in this one).
Thanks Bela 🙂
