Chanel introduces no. 3, a perfume for the Third World…

Posted by Robin on 25 January 2007 7 Comments

The new fragrance...

...marks Chanel's first-ever attempt to appeal to a low- or no-income consumer market, and is part of the fashion world's desire to "give something back" to developing countries that have offered much in the way of photo-shoot locales and labor outsourcing.

You knew it had to be from The Onion, right? Thanks to Cale for the tip!

Update: For those of you who are not familiar with The Onion, it is a satirical newspaper, and the article about Chanel referenced above is a joke. There will not be a new fragrance from Chanel called no. 3.

Just read the article in The Onion. This marketing idea is so patronizing! Or am I being oversensitive here? If I lived in a 3rd world country I wouldn't want a perfume's name to remind me of that fact. Especially if it was developed by someone who thought it would be “undesirable for a perfume to complement my own aroma” :-) Having said that, the notes sound appealing. Wondering whether this one will take off.

Well, you know, usually you'd go to The Onion by their front page, and then it would be really obvious by the headlines, LOL…

You're being too kind, Ma'am. Guess the name alone should have tipped me off. Even a brunette can have a blonde moment! :-D
