News flash: older women buy more perfume, get less attention from marketers

Posted by Robin on 1 December 2006 4 Comments

The NPD Group, a market research firm, has released a new report, Women's Fragrance Track 2006. Their key finding? Young women (aged 18-24) "present a huge opportunity for fragrance companies":

According to the report, this age group constitutes the heaviest fragrance users. However, less than 60% of these women have actually purchased a woman's fragrance in the past year. That compares to 63% of women ages 25-34, 62% of women 35-44 and 64% of women ages 45-54 who have purchased women's fragrance products.

This younger age cohort is also doing most of their fragrance buying outside of department stores, and they are buying lots of celebrity fragrances — no surprise there. (via brandweek)

Hmm… I guess this explains why I tend to buy classic perfumes now.. I'm 35+, and I don't want to smell like Brittany Spears!

Well see, I know you're over 35 because her name is Britney 😉

And just teasing you — I am over 35 too and wouldn't even know who she was if she didn't have a perfume.

Oh man, I thought something was weird the way I spelled her name. I guess I truly show my age!!! ; )

It just seems ridiculous to me to wear Britney's fragrance or Paris Hilton's…. Their fragrances just don't suit me. Then again, I've always loved classic and mature fragrances ever since I was a kid (yeah, this obsession started way back!) I fell in love with Estee Lauder Youth Dew at the age of 8!!!!

Wow, Youth Dew is heady stuff for an 8 year old. Sounds like you wouldn't have worn BS Curious even in your teens.
