Perfume to beat the winter blues

Posted by Robin on 20 February 2006 11 Comments

If late February is when you usually start reaching for your summer citrus fragrances, you'll sympathize with columnist Hannah Betts of the Times Online. Her weapon of choice in winter-denial is Acqua di Parma Colonia:

Inside Acqua di Parma’s sunny yellow exterior lies bottled escapism: the essence not merely of better weather, but of a more favoured age.

Read the rest of the article here. My own choice to banish the February blahs is usually Carthusia Mediterraneo, the best summer-in-a-bottle fragrance I know.

R – I have finally sniffed Mediterraneo and it is perfection and has made it to my (rather extensive) wish list! You were right!

My personal scent to break out of cabin fever is definitely a controversial one – Guerlain's AA Pamplelune. But on me it fortunately does not smell like cat urine. It cheers me up.

Others that help are Eau d'Hadrien and certainly, when I want a bit of Hollywood regality meets European vacation – Acqua di Parma.

Damn – I had a sniff round Liberty's recently and tried the Carthusia Fiori – forgot about the Mediterraneo in my excitement! I'm currently reaching frequently for Carthusia Ligea (which is not your kind of thing, R, I suspect), and for Chantecaille Frangipane, which is another summer-in-a-bottle kind of scent. Roll on sunshine; I hate February!

Everyone who loves Pamplelune really adores it, so it must be wonderful if it works on your skin. I truly can't wear it. Glad you've found Mediterraneo too!

Liked Fiori, but didn't want to own it. Ligea I am pretty sure I've never tried…but suspect you're right ;-)

    February is just the worst.

That is a surprisingly wonderful article and review for a newspaper. Ms. Betts writes about it charmingly, thank you for pointing that link out.

My choices for the winter blahs tended last year and this to be Vicky Tiel Ethere and Compagnia Delle Indie's Donna. Both spray out aspects of early spring which make me feel like smiling at the hope that warm sunshine and budding flowers are on their way soon.

K, she has written on fragrance before, and her articles are always interesting. As usual, your favorites are things I am haven't smelled :-)

What a wonderful article! I could “hear” her British accent whilst reading it. (Did I actually write “whilst”?!?)

AdP Colonia is always a scent I love to sample whenever I find it in a store. It immediately brightens my mood. As a matter of fact, I finally broke down and purchased a bottle during Barneys GWP sale. I'm still waiting for the package to arrive. I'm hoping it hasn't blown away in the strong winter winds we've been having lately.

Oooh, can you give a brief description of Ethere for me? I've always wanted to try this Vicky Tiel fragrance, but unfortunately they are not readily available where I live. How would you describe some of the notes in this one? (I am also longing for spring right now)

K, hope your package arrives soon…that is an amazing gift with purchase — I was just looking at the pictures on Ombligo.
