New fragrances from Yves Saint Laurent, L'Artisan & more

Posted by Robin on 11 February 2006 21 Comments

Yves Saint Laurent Cinema Eau de ToiletteYves Saint Laurent has released a new Eau de Toilette version of Cinema. The juice has been reworked; the notes are clementine, cyclamen, mimosa, white peony, jasmine, amaryllis, amber, white musk and Bourbon vanilla. (via absolufeminin & osmoz)

This year's summer limited edition fragrance from L'Artisan will be Mandarine, tout simplement. Look for it this spring. Coming in May or June will be a new Eau de Parfum for men, Fou d'Absinthe, described as a woody anise scent. In other news, L'Artisan is repackaging the whole line, bottles, caps and all; Fou d'Absinthe will be the first release in the new bottle design. Many thanks to Cédric for the scoop!

Dessert Beauty, makers of the original Clean perfume, will launch a lower priced spin-off line called Clean Shower Fresh.

Antonio Banderas will launch Antonio by Antonio Banderas, an "aromatic musk" for men, this spring. (both above via Women's Wear Daily)

I am so disappointed to learn that L'Artisan will be re-packaging its fragrance line. I've been buying L'Artisan scents for over ten years, and those bottles are so pleasantly familiar to me. I love their no-nonsense shape and the little code-like icons on the appropriately-colored labels. The L'Artisan execs themselves have claimed that the fragrance itself, not the packaging, is what matters most. Why change something that has worked so well for so long? First the deal with The Limited, and now this. Will they be reformulating the scents as well? *sigh*

I also think its a shame about the L'Artisan packaging. I like the look of their bottles – simple but elegant. They most certainly look like perfume bottles too. I dislike packaging that is too minimalist-sometimes the bottles just wind up looking like shampoo containers.

I wonder which direction L'Artisan will be going? I'm curious to see the new look.

The EDT version of Cinema sounds very appealing to me. I tried the original and hated it – it smelled like I'd spilled the contents of an ashtray all over myself!

See my comment above for a link to the description of the new bottles.

I need to retry the old Cinema — didn't remember it as that smoky but it has been a long time since I smelled it. The new one sounds more floral.

I thought Cinema was too light to start with, and no staying power, now it's in EDT? Hummm.

I hope I like the new Cinema. The old one was very headache-inducing, like they used really cheap ingredients. I always WANT to like YSLs, since their Paris has sentimental importance to me and I like the way it and its LEs smell, too.

Does this mean that the old design stock will be sold off cheaply, I wonder? My local store that stocks some l'Artisans has had them on sale for about 30% off recently – I thought this was because they were not going to stock the line in future, but maybe it's because the design is changing?

Just came back from Santa Cruz island. I wish I could bottle the smell of that place – a mix of fresh air, ocean, eucalyptus, and fennel…and something woodsy and fresh. The L'artisan Mandarine sounds like a gorgeous summer scent…just the name of it makes me crave it.

    V, I hardly remember the lasting power…just that I didn't love it.

I loved Paris at one time, L, but didn't like Cinema either.

You know…I don't know your name and I'm sorry! Is it Robin?

If you live in CA, you have to go to this island. It's such an amazing place and I feel so so so grateful to be able to go to places like this.

I feel your pain about the L'Artisan packaging. I love simple and elegant. I like the way the bottles feel in my hand.

Yes, it is Robin. I used to live in Southern California, but now in (freezing) Pennsylvania, so no trips to Santa Cruz island coming up for me :-(

How long did you live in So. Cal? I'm originally from GA, but have been here since 89. Can't beat the weather, I feel for you in Pennsylvania!

I have never tried cinema or picked up the bottle to even sniff it. It is really odd that I think I might, and I just look at the bottle and think about the name, and don't feel like sniffing it. Naturally this means I will have to make a special trip out to go smell why I am afraid to smell it. Cheezwiz has given me a morbid couriousity about it.

About 5-6 years. I miss it, especially (of course) in winter!

I'm always surprised how uninteresting I find Cinema. You'd think the company that made Opium and Rive Gauche and all the other 'firsts' would have come up with something you could actually identify in a blind test…I don't think I would spot Cinema in ten guesses!

Agree it is not one of their more interesting efforts. Can only assume it is selling well or they wouldn't have bothered with an EdT, but who knows?
