Maybe because when you're lying down, your nose to lungs air passages are constricted? or something? Or you're asleep? Did they say that we can detect scents best of all when we're down on all fours like a bloodhound?
L, apparently other senses are less acute when lying down too, and according to the article, probably to help you sleep.
