Next up in the celebrity perfume game: Madonna

Posted by Robin on 6 June 2005 7 Comments

Madonna plans to launch her first perfume this coming November, to coincide with the release of her next album, Defying Gravity. (via Irish Examiner, link no longer working sorry!) Update: and no, it didn't happen! Rumors of a Madonna scent seem to crop up regularly.

Ohhh Love Madonna, I'll be first in line. I have to laugh at the Aftelier Pink Lotus parfum created for Madonna. My thoughts are, yes it was created for her, but did she like it? I of course was suckered into buying it, it's really pretty nasty IMHO and the price was crazy.

I'm sure Madonna herself will do better if she wants sales.

    :O)

I am interested to hear who she is working with…so far the reports are very sketchy! Actually it is very surprising that it has taken her this long to get into the game as it were.

i ordered a sample of pink lotus and i hated it as well! well, hate is a strong word, but i really didn't like it. there is sooo much sandalwood, which drowns out the tuberose, which itself drowns out the pink lotus, which i can't smell at all. and yes, the price! i tried tuberose and cepes as well but didn't like that one either – i think mandy aftel's taste is a little too hippie for me. (she is based in berkeley, ca after all…)

i'm interested to see who madonna works with and what she comes up with as well. i remember many years back it was reported she was going to do a fragrance called holy water, which would have been a more fitting name than “defying gravity” i think. i assume whatever she ends up with will have a strong tuberose note since all the frangrances she has been quoted as wearing are tuberose-based. caron tubereuse, lartisan tubereuse, fracas, creed indiana, la natura gardenia, and aftelier pink lotus are the ones i've heard associated with her – any others?

too bad she is following in the footsteps of s.j.p. and britney and j.lo, instead of the other way around which is how it used to be!

It is very odd that she is last to come out with her own scent. Maybe she has been too busy with all her other projects. And it will be interesting to see if she names the scent Defying Gravity like the new CD. It isn't an obvious fragrance name, but it is certainly more interesting than Curious or Lovely.

I haven't tried a single scent by Mandy Aftel yet!! Need to get a few samples.

i agree, 'lovely' is a bit trite – there's no need to be so unoriginal. (even though clinique 'happy' was never a name i was attracted to, it was original.)

and at the risk of sounding mean, i find it pretty funny that sjp is going to have her own makeup and beauty line – does anyone really want to look like her?!

    Sounding mean is allowed :-)

But I don't find her unattractive. Her style is different than mine, and I still don't catch the appeal of using products just because a celebrity does, but I would guess lots of people would buy makeup with her name on it.

true – she is unconventional looking but i admire her confidence and unwillingness to get a nosejob, etc…it's cool that she is a star and a fashion icon but isn't perfect looking – good for her!
