He also created one of the first “celebrity fragrances,” L’Interdit (French for “forbidden”), designed initially for and later endorsed by [Audrey] Hepburn. “We never had a contract, like other designers do,” Mr. Givenchy told the Chicago Tribune in 1989. “We only had love and that is why it worked so well.”
