COVID caused more than 20 million Americans to lose their ability to smell and taste, and at least 25% haven't regained those vital senses, a new study says.

Survey responses from nearly 29,700 adults also show a correlation between more severe COVID infection and taste and smell loss, researchers reported recently in the journal The Laryngoscope.

Regenerate more of the olfactory neurons

Inspired by smaller [platelet-rich plasma] studies conducted in Europe and in California, Dr. Rosen began a pilot study in 2019 before COVID hit. For the treatments, blood is drawn from the patient and the platelets containing growth factors are isolated. The platelets are then placed on a small sponge which is inserted in the nose. “It is a way for the blood product to get in contact with the lining of the olfactory neurons that are high in the nose,” says Dr. Rosen. “What you’re trying to do is regenerate more of the olfactory neurons. You’re trying to tell the body that there has been some damage, and it’s time to repair it.”

Suitable for use in a wearable device

The e-nose consists of gas sensors made of semiconductor materials. When a molecule of interest interacts with this semiconductor, it changes its degree of electrical resistance. This resistance can be measured to determine how much of that molecule is present in the environment. This is not a novel technology, but the size of these sensors is shrinking, which is making them much more suitable for use in a wearable device, like the eyeglasses demonstrated by the researchers.

My own body odor was unrecognizable

Also amiss: Tap water reeked of bleach; I smelled gasoline when none was present. My own body odor was unrecognizable, like a stranger had been wearing my clothes. My senses were, simply stated, torched. My personal, fire-breathing dragon was alerting me to something insidious: My body hadn't healed properly from COVID-19.

About 5% of patients with confirmed cases of Covid-19 — some 27 million people worldwide — are estimated to have suffered a long-lasting loss of smell or taste, a new analysis suggests.
