Unlike other insects, migratory locusts have over 2,000 glomeruli in their antennal lobe, compared to 20-300 in most insects. This distinctive feature enables complex odor processing in the locusts, crucial for their behavior and swarming.

This was fascinating, though a bit hard to understand in some sections. I don’t know much about locust (or any insect!) anatomy. It is creepy to think that scientists might deal with swarms of locusts that are pests by messing with their brains. Haven’t I seen some horror movies that start like that? (I’m actually thinking of one such film, a favorite, Mimic by Guillermo del Toro, starring Mira Sorvino. It’s about the unforeseen consequences of a woman scientist’s intervention in cockroach biology done to stop a pestilence killing children. But then what happens…. !)
Thank you for not telling me what happens!!!
