It's Tuesday and National Unicorn Day. Also, Marc Jacobs’ birthday, National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day and National Winston Churchill Day. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm commando for a morning exercise class; later I will pick something from what y'all are wearing. Tea at the moment is Yunnan Golden Buds Organic from Upton.
Reminder: 4/12 is National Licorice Day. You know what to do!
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: the Turquoise Blue Glaze Butterfly and Flower Tulip Teacup is $5.99 at Teaware.House, and also comes in orange, pink peach, red and lavender.
Morning! It’s crisp and cold-a real Maritime spring sort of day. I’m in Eau de Magnolia body wash, and a generous amount of Grandiflora-Nichel, another magnolia scent. Magnolias don’t really grow here-there are two downtown and I always look forward to their blooms, and their fresh scent.
Robin good for you for getting to an exercise class-I like to do some yoga every day before the day gets away from me. Puts a different spin on the day for me.
The Grandiflora line is so underrated! Michel really does sing.
Agreed. I haven’t tried Michel, but Queen of the Night is something else.
Not a dud among them, in my opinion!
The Grandiflora’s are really hard to find in Europe these days. I have a bottle of Boronia and would love some Madagascan Jasmin and Queen of the Night.
A truly great magnolia that is sadly no longer available is Sous les Magnolias by Pierre Bourdon. I think there is a review of it on NST somewhere.
I unfortunately have come to terms that I’ll never be able to smell Sous les Magnolias. 🙈
Such a shame! I’m hoping their candles make it stateside, but who knows when.
Oh, if you are doing yoga every day then kudos to you! 3 exercise classes + sauna per week are all I can manage, although I do get other exercise as well.
I love the teacup, and it’s cheap as chips! Today’s pull from my new stuff was Nicolai Fig Tea. I’m not a fan of fig, but I could see my way to a small bottle of this.
I used up a small bottle years ago, FT is nice in warm weather.
Love Fig Tea 🙂
Hello all!
I’m in Baiser Vole extrait today, the most sensuous lily I can think of. I dithered over buying this one so long, but at least I have it now.
Today is my long class day and I’ve got some physics homework that I’ve been dragging my heels on. Doesn’t help that it’s been so grey this week.
Have a great day everyone!
I love that you’re into physics-I loved physics but majored in calculus back in the day. Good luck with your studies and you smell amazing 🙂
Not into, sadly, just required as part of my chemistry degree plan. Honestly physics is pretty darned hard, and I can’t imagine doing more!
This semester though calculus 3 is really kicking my butt. Mostly because of the professor, if I’m candid.
Just finished an advising session with an excellent student whose butt is being kicked by Calc I this semester — the professor is not bad (according to the student), but this is the prof’s first teaching job, so there are some bumps in the road.
Honestly I miss calculus 1 after 2 and 3. I hope your student can find a good solution. I would have dropped early and taken a different professor if I could but he’s the only one who teaches it!
I’m in the EdP version today! I’ve never smelled the extrait – I bet it’s amazing, and no doubt you smell fabulous.
Great minds! I do like the EdP but the extrait really is special.
I’m intrigued! I wonder if the Parfum version is close to the Extrait…
That’s the only one I haven’t tried! I wish I could compare them, honestly. Probably can’t go wrong with any version, honestly.
There is also the essence de parfum, a vanilla bomb, good in winter and the EDT in summer.
Calculus and physics are both subjects that can be so impacted by how the prof. lectures/presents. Hang in there!
Thank you! Unfortunately, the material doesn’t seem hard but I really need to see lots of examples to understand math.
Lovely teacup! Had a great viewing of the full eclipse from the roof of my building in Montréal (we were under the direct path). Today is my birthday and I’m celebrating in Guerlain Plus Que Jamais and going out for lunch with a friend. Enjoying the sunny beautiful day as we have five days of rain moving in tonight. 🙂
Happy Birthday, cazaubon! Hope it’s epic and hope you have cake 🙂 You smell glorious.
Happy birthday to you, cazaubon! I’m glad to hear the weather is cooperating!
Happy birthday! Enjoy the day before the weather moves in — we’re going the opposite direction with some sun today after an absolutely miserable day yesterday.
Happy Birthday, enjoy your special day.
Happy Birthday cazaubon! Birthday perfumes don’t count, just sayin’ 🤣
Thanks hajusuuri! 😆
Happy birthday!
Very happy birthday to you! Enjoy your day! You smell wonderful. I still have a small amount of that one that I should wear again soon.
Happy Birthday, cazaubon!💐🥂☀️
Happy Birthday! Hope the lunch is/was grand!
Happy birthday! 🎂🎈🎁
Happy birthday!
Happy Birthday!
I hope you have a really great day and a peaceful year. Happy birthday!
Happy birthday! So glad you got to see the eclipse.
Happy Birthday! I hope you’re having a wonderful day! And I’m glad the sun finally came out for you🌞.
I hope you have a great birthday Cazaubon!
Happy birthday!
Happy birthday, have fun with your friend.
Happy birthday, Cazaubon! I’m glad you got to see totality. We got to around 99%, but it’s not the same.
Happy Birthday Cazaubon glad you are taking advantage of the good weather.
Hope it’s a wonderful birthday, cazaubon!!
I just put on a little SDV in honor of your birthday (my decant is from the split you did a few years ago). ♥
Thanks! :-)SDV is so good.
Happy Birthday!🥳🌞
Happy birthday!
Happy Scented Birthday Cazaubon! 🎂🎁🎉
Happy Birthday, cazaubon!🎉
I am in Evernia Ormande Jayne. I love it almost as much as Ormande woman. Looking sunny here in the SF bay area. My class had a good view of the eclispe yesterday with the special glasses. We got about 34% of it.
Sunny and lovely here too, for once!
where is here?
SE Pennsylvania 🙂
Day before the eclipse: clear and sunny
Day of the eclipse: completely overcast
Day after the eclipse: clear and sunny
Oh well, it was still amazing to experience nighttime in the middle of the day! So humbling.
I’m sampling Monserrat for the summer-like day we’re having today.
Yeah, I think lots of the country had that.
I will wear Daisy today in honor of Marc Jacobs’ birthday.
I wish Marc Jacobs would bring his makeup line back. He had the BEST pencil eye liners bar none!
I loved those, the charcoal gray looked slightly silver in some lights. I’ve never seen one similar.
I loved that one because it wasn’t as harsh as straight up black but achieved the same effect, at least on me with my eye color. And it stayed put forEVER!
I thought about Daisy!
I think I’ll wear CBIHP Room with a View today, hoping for sunnier and warmer days ahead. Fennel is a cousin of licorice, right?
In the last week, things seem to have fallen pretty well into place for our sojourn in Germany in fall semester. It looks like we have an apartment, even, and yesterday I got approved to work from there by my employer. Now if only we could get anything done towards getting a new car…still waiting on the insurance appraisal and the broker has been saying it’s a tight used car market (sigh). But it’s a beautiful morning so far and I’m going to focus on that.
That sounds like such a fun adventure (sans car shopping🙁)
Oh yay!!! That is exciting.
I am wearing Delacourte Olyssia, one of my favourite orange blossom scents.
I was lucky to watch the solar eclipse yesterday, it was spectacular. I wasn’t expecting to be touched by it this much!!
So glad you saw the eclipse. There seems to be something so primal within us that is touched by such events. They are riveting.
YES, I feel like that is just right — it’s primal — and I am lacking that bit of primal interest and curiosity in how the earth works in the solar system.
I’ve got a nice long list of perfumes with licorice or anise notes. Anise or star anise especially appear in a good number of perfumes that I have. Yesterday I went with a discontinued Armani Prive called Ambre Soie that I still have a little of in a decant. It doesn’t list anise in its notes list, but I definitely smell it.
Today I think I’ll put on Pale Fire by Maison Anonyme. It actually has a licorice note and it’s one of my go-to concert perfumes. And we’re going to a concert tonight so… 🙂
I also wanted to give quick thoughts on the Jo Malone sample set that someone posted a link for recently. I’m glad I bought the set but I think it’s unlikely to spark a bottle purchase. Musk Memento was my least favorite as I find it less interesting and compelling than the others. Ginger Beer was nice and more unisex/slightly masculine leaning. Emerald Thyme is a nice herby citrus but very fleeting, unsurprisingly. Passiflora was probably my favorite. It was oddly comforting and made me want to keep sniffing. These were all just tested with 1-2 small sprays on my inner wrist. I’ll give most of them a full wearing soon to see if my initial thoughts hold true.
Those JMs do not sound compelling! I had hopes for the ginger beer, but “nice” was not what I was looking for. I still don’t think anyone has outdone original Demeter Gingerale.
Licorice day two: Demeter Licorice, the exact smell of those licorice pipes and cigars from my childhood.
Perfect!
No licorice here, waiting for Friday. I’m wearing SL Fils de Joie.
Happy Birthday, Cazaubon!
You smell wonderful!
Thank you!
Sotd is Capsule Parfums Legion for the anise note right out of the gate. I love this fragrance and will add it to the long list of fragrances I should wear more often.
If you’re like me, that list is too long to be helpful 🙂
Like SarahN, I experienced a total “cloudclipse” yesterday, bracketed by two gloriously sunny days. The universe said “hah!”. But Australia is having five in the space of 15 years (starting from a couple of years ago), so perhaps Mr. Skal and I will be able to combine a total eclipse with a visit to our grandson.
Just remembered that I bought an anise sample from TPC a while back and have yet to really explore it. D’oh. Today, am in Prada Infusion d’Iris, again because I was running out the door and needed something pretty and unchallenging to those around me.
After class, had a student ask to reschedule their meeting with me, which gave me time to run errands — including a much-needed trip through the touchless car wash. Yay! I have two Zoom meetings this evening (they actually overlap, ugh) so will give myself a little break this afternoon to watch part of the Red Sox home opener! (Have already heard “Sweet Caroline” on the radio — I live in NY, but it can’t be a coincidence.)
“Sampler” — multiple samples!
SOTD = Providence Perfume Irisque
So beautiful … musky iris! It is from a neglected bottle which really should be worn more often!

I reveled in the solar eclipse event yesterday. I’m glad I went out a little earlier when it was easy to detect it. At its high point, the sun was covered by clouds. The birds chirped extra loud but it could just be imagination because perhaps there were more of them during the day and these were cries of alarm. In any case, the eclipse glasses from Warby Parker came in handy!
My friend is back from Florida because there were a few things she needed to get done around here. Anyway, did I ever mention that I think she’s on the spectrum? There’s nothing wrong with that at all and it does explain why she constantly has to be doing “something”. We may have a meal at an Indonesian restaurant in the near future if we can agree on a date for that.
Someone I was texting with in NJ during the eclipse said that the birds went nuts in her area. So it wasn’t just you.
Memoirs of a a Trespasser this morning. Pilates kind of kicked my butt yesterday — substitute trainer while my usual one is out on maternity leave, and she’s been having me do some new-to-me and quite challenging maneuvers. I love variety and it’s not things that I can’t do by any means, so this is great fun but it does result in some next-day muscle soreness. Nothing that can’t be managed by even more Pilates, I find. 💪
I am sure your muscles are bigger than mine, because even a sub yoga teacher can kick my butt 🙂
In Iris Nobile, for the star anise–that counts, right? Such a sparkling scent, it goes with today’s sun & blue sky.
Oh of course it counts, maybe I will wear that tomorrow!
I’m in Cuir Beluga (another sample) and some other things. I spent the day pottering around Strasbourg which is just a wonderful city. I even went to Galéries de Lafayette and tried some perfume. Dior Eau Noire (which I thought I wanted but it turns out I don’t like the drydown very much at all), One of the Guerlain Nérolis, Kilian’s Moonlight in Heaven (which seems to have lost the rice), Roses on Ice (ok but not great), Angel’s share (which was rather nice) and Apple Brandy on the Rocks (like your most expensive cleaning product that does not actually clean things all that well). All in all I much prefer the fragrances I already own. Which is a good thing.
Sounds like a nice relaxing day. I hope you have many more before heading back to work and everyday life.
Thanks! I hope you manage to fine a better place to stay. Before starting the bank robbing of course!
Never envisioned a life of outlawry for myself..🤣
I do love Strasbourg and Alsace in general — it’s one of my happy places. Perfume sniffing sounds wonderful as well, even if it was light on the pocketbook. 🙂
Yay for money saved on your perfume sniffing expedition!
I’ve got nothing for this weeks CP so I’ll wear what I want to wear instead. CSP Amour de Cacao hits the spot on days like this, so that’s what I went with. Always makes me smile and snuggle down into my shirt like a turtle into its shell.
I need to mark a moment in my personal history. Yesterday at 1110 am yesterday I got “the knock”! At the age of 59, after 6+ years of “homelessness” I made my appearance on police body camera footage. Finally! Bucket list item achieved! I’m such a law breaking ingenue! Bank robbing will surely be next. 😉 Just kidding folks. But, I was booted and warned not to come back “to any public park for any reason at any time” under the city statute blah, blah, blah. Later that day I was coming out of a grocery store and a lady parked nearby hailed me to say how much she liked my rig, and how long have I had it, and do I like it, and a thousand other questions. 😂 I’m sure she was one of the town folk who voted me off the island. White, middle class, middle age, nice car and clothes, hair done just right…I made a point of telling her why I was here in her town, what I did, but now, after my interaction with law enforcement (who of course is not at fault. They’re just carrying out the law) I was leaving for a friendlier place. The look of consternation on her face…
After that, I hit up Ulta (retail therapy, ya know) looking for Hello Kitty stuff. In truth, I hated Hello Kitty when I was young but now as an old bat I find it adorable. They only had the hand cream left and no tester so I have no clue as to how it smelled. I did find a few things that ticked some boxes. One is the Ulta brand moisturizing Stick Foundation which is outstanding and easily mistaken for very high end makeup. Blurry soft focus natural finish. ❤️
Finishing coffee, then will hit the road. Smell well y’all!
Wow… I did not know they can order you to leave a public place without a valid reason. That’s just wrong. I am really sorry it happened to you.
As for Hello Kitty story. I am kind of indifferent to Hello Kitty, but a somewhat similar thing happened to me regarding the pink color. I used to really dislike it, but then it grew on me. It is still far from being my favorite color, but now I think some shades are cute.
Their “valid reason” is that any vehicle that can be “slept” in isn’t allowed in any public park. I didn’t see the point in telling him there are people all over the park living out of and sleeping in cars. The city has their agenda and I have mine. No big loss for me, but it is for them because the hospital here is already dangerously short staffed. They found a confused patient who had climbed over the bed rails and walked off the unit all the way to lobby area before she was found. CEO’s and upper management are still making bank though…🤔
Ooh, so they invited you to work in their hospital and then kicked you out! 🤯 They really shot themselves in the foot then.
Homelessness and drugs are a big problem in the PNW (and other areas), so instead of tackling what admittedly is a deep seated problem, they just slapped an oversized bandaid on a symptom of the problem. This strategy strangely parallels medical care in the US. Reactive instead of proactive. 😏
Hope you’re going to have a wonderful time where you go next. Yay for retail therapy.
And the retail therapy was quite affordable, which is always a plus!
I’m thinking about getting some of those Hello Kitty zit stickers. If I am gonna break out, I might as well have a bit of fun with it.
Ha, those do sound fun! 😀
Did the po-po actually put a Denver Boot on your ride??
No, I was in the camper. I worked the previous night and took doggo to the park after to throw the ball around. I fell asleep after and was woken by the police knocking around 11am. When I said the “boot” I meant it in slang, as in “booted out” but sometimes that doesn’t translate well to written language. 🙃
Gotcha.
I find it rather ironic that I never knew about the Denver Boot when I lived in Colorado previously. I only heard about it after moving to the East Coast.
I had to look up consternation. Learned a new word! That lady was just looking for juicy gossip!
I’m sorry you had so much trouble with this contract.
Wasn’t it not too long ago medical people, including nurses, were “heros” and everyone was banging pots and pans? My 15 minutes of fame is gone baby, gone! 😀
Oh my Deva. I am late so you are probably already long since elsewhere, but what a story. I am happy for you (getting out of that job) and sad for you (I’m sure the pay helped) in equal measure.
Sorry to hear you were unjustly booted. Hopefully the next place is more friendly!
Goriously sunny day, if a bit cool, so in Ambra Nera.
No full points, but I sprayed some Etro Anice for partial credit.
Thanks to everyone who gave me feedback on the website. I applied to the free website guys, but apparently their current acceptance rate is 15%, so they will probably reject me. Once they answer me, I will look for hero images again. I had similar thoughts myself.
To me, that Etro smells like licorice so I think it counts! And for what it’s worth, I’ve lumped in anise and star anise perfumes for this cp since they are close relatives of the licorice note.
Yes! To me, licorice, anise and star anise notes in perfumes are quite similar, too, so I did the same for this CP.
I like these notes, and I think they deserve more love from noses and companies. I still miss Kerosene’s Black Vines – ultimate licorice perfume, in my opinion. Brin de Reglisse and several Lolita Lempickas seem to be the most accessible options now.
You know it’s autumn when….you see a mouse sitting by your deck/front door. Fortunately, outside not in and to be honest I have created a perfect ecosystem for it due to the proximity to bird feeding sugar-water, wild bird seed, apples and a lovely gap in the wall between the doorframe and stone. I’m always amazed at how “ clockwork” wild creatures are regarding when they turn up in autumn or spring. Mice and fantail birds are sure signs of autumn, but also the bellbirds and tui are singing at dawn again following a late summer silent period. Blackbirds are also silent at the moment ( moulting and looking daggy) but will reappear soon. Then rats, probably. Wearing Ganga…but I ain’t no snoop dog.
Field mice are lovely imo.
They are adorable! I rarely come across them when I’m out and about because word must have gotten out that I’m hanging with a Mouse Murderer. In the underground pipeline, news travels! The last one I saw was dangling from the mouth of T-Rex, who was inordinately proud of herself.
I am wearing a sample of a new perfume that hasn’t been released yet. It is a collaboration between Frédéric Malle and the Swedish fashion house Acne Studios called fittingly ‘Acne Studios par Frédéric Malle’. The fragrance notes are aldehydes, rose, peach, vanilla, sandalwood, and musk. It smells like rose, peach, and soft powder on my skin and it smells better than I just described it. Beautiful for spring and summer.
I still haven’t thought about licorice notes, there’s sure to be something I have with an unexpected licorice note. Meanwhile, I’m wearing Taklamakan from SHL 777.
It was vintage Etro Royal Pavillon today and tonight the original Chantal Thomass which smells of liquorice and sweet things so I claim points.
Royal Pavillon is beautiful.
Glad you like it too.
I’m trying Indochine for the first time today. I think it’s been mentioned here quite recently, maybe by Deva? It’s a thumbs up for me. It reminds me of Tam Dao but with a spice kick. Very very wearable, this could be an all-year round easy reach.
Will have to decide on a licorice scent for Friday, I have these in the running: Brin de Reglisse, Lolita Lempicka (sadly a new version and doesn’t smell much like the OG of my memory) and LPRN Black Perfecto (weather might be too warm for this).
I mentioned it yesterday, so maybe that is where you read it. I’ve had a sample of it for years and may have tried it when I first got it, but forgot about it.
I really enjoyed it this time around, very wearable but still interesting.
Brin de Reglisse for the CP, and just added a little SDV in honor of Cazaubon’s birthday (my decant is from her split), as the BdR has mostly worn off by now.
Spent a lot of time grocery shopping this morning and then a couple of hours putting together a bolognese sauce (now it’s in the simmer stage). About to prep Chicken Marbella for tomorrow evening’s dinner so it can marinate overnight. It’s a cooking day here!
YUM! Your post made me hungry. 😋
Gorgeous teacup today, Robin!
Not sure if I have any perfumes with a licorice note. I much prefer eating those black jelly beans to wearing them. Will poke around in The Sample Stash to see if I have anything there.
SOTD = back in vintage Cabochard. Needed something that could stiffen my spine a little bit today. I should really get a bottle of Chanel No. 19 one of these days.
Ha! I was just looking at No.19 Poudre and thinking I should just get it before it gets even pricier. You smell great today!
Thanks!
I kind of went nuts last quarter with perfume. But at least I didn’t make any resolutions this year.
Do it with No.19. It’s like having chicken in every pot as I’ve mentioned before 🤣.
As long as I don’t get distracted by another perfumed shiny thing! 🤪
Chanel No 19 is almost indispensable 😀
It’s been a hectic few days. Yesterday I wore Aura edp for the eclipse. I was working but someone from the neighboring store let me borrow their glasses. Today I wore YSL In Love Again. I wore my same cardigan from yesterday though, so the leftover Aura overpowered it.
Oy! I don’t ever smell yesterday’s perfume from my clothes…
Glad you got to see a bit of the eclipse!
What did you think of the eclipse? Were you in the totality zone? I found the one I experienced momentous, but I’m easily impressed by the natural world. I love cold weather partly because of the mixture of perfume residuals I can smell on my winter scarf. 🧣
We had 93% totality I think. I thought it was cool when I looked through the glasses. The temperature dropped noticeably and it just felt a little odd.
