It’s Tuesday, National Orange Blossom Day, National PTSD Awareness Day and Canadian Multiculturalism Day. Birthdays: Paul Laurence Dunbar, Helen Keller, Norma Kamali, Vera Wang, Alice McDermott. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in Imaginary Authors Mosaic, inspired by a fake novel about a fake spa "on the edge of The Black Forest in the seemingly serene German village of Baden-Baden". Tea at the moment is Mariage Frères Festin d'or.
Reminder: on 6/30, we're off to Germany (you can do a day or whole week, as always). Wear a perfume by a German brand (Escada? Hugo Boss? Jil Sander? Mäurer & Wirtz / 4711?) or named for a place in Germany, or that you bought in Germany, or whatever you can think of to fit the theme. Suggested by ockeghem and voted for by carole and chocolatemarzipan8.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: The Form 1382 Blaublüten / Blue Blossom teapot from Arzberg ("Form 1382 by Dr Hermann Gretsch: It was the rejection of impractical, ornate sets and a ‘thumbs-up’ to functional, aesthetic everyday porcelain...The Form 1382 design has not been changed since and, to this day, it has not lost any of its allure. The collection belongs to the classics of modern industrial design and is one of the very few porcelain forms to feature in the Museum of Modern Art in New York") can be special ordered from Gracious Style for $154.
I finished a sample of Vetiver Tonka today. Not really appropriate for the heat today, but it would be perfect in cool weather.
I don’t tend to reach for it in summer either. Still, you did smell great today.
PriscillaE,
It would be perfect for here cause I have a sunburn from Sat- the one hot day we had-now it’s 10 degrees and a cold rain is falling 🙂
got up at five to make it to yoga before work. My SOTD is D’zing! which is a good choice for this particular day 🙂
At 5! Good for you.
I suppose Eau de néroli doré from Hermès is fitting for National Orange Blossom Day.
Yes! And I feel bad I did not celebrate, but at least I got Germany points.
Nearly July and bizarrely, still needing to run the heater in the morning. They’re promising us summer weather at long last later this week, but in the meantime my craving for warmth and bare skin is driving me to the beachy end of my perfume collection — Bronze Goddess, Terracotta, and Monyette for today. When I first tried Monyette 15 or so years ago, it struck me as too cloyingly sweet. But oddly, even though I still can’t really handle much sweetness in a fragrance, at present I’m finding it lovely and very wearable. Granted, I’m only wearing a small dab of the roll-on, but the scent is doing that melds-with-warm-skin thing that I love in a perfume.
Interesting, maybe I should try it again! It used to be all the rage on MakeupAlley.
Hello all!
I hope everyone had a good night of sleep last night. I somehow snoozed for an hour, and little Jicky was happy to oblige.
I’m in Hyacinth and a Mechanic today. Andy Tauer announced his Stories perfumes were available again this week only and I’m sorely tempted to get a back up. I wish I could see in this bottle to see if my bottle will last another 7 years…. Darned no-buy!
Have a great day.
I saw that! I am thinking of Marco pour Elle, myself!
Yeah, I was looking at those too. Not on a “no buy” per sé, but still holding on to money a little more tightly than usual these days.
Commando because later today I’m planning on going up to Boulder to sniff around Dawn’s studio
Oh my gosh, have a wonderful time!
Oh do report back! Jealous!
Also a bit of jealousy here, but maybe more the happy for you type! Hope you find a favorite.
How awesome! I admire her work very much.
Lucky!
Awesome! Let us know what happened!
Germany, day 2, and I’m in the original 4711 cologne, which I bought at the actual 4711 store in actual Köln (which is where the word “cologne” comes from), and if that isn’t like double points then I’m just not doing it right. It is pure pleasure, breezy and uplifting. It’s an enduring classic for a reason.
Definitely at least double points.
Absolutely double points!
I think you get ALL the points! You have at least hit the trifecta.
Yes. Double points not enough.
Easily triple or quadruple points for you today, for sure.
Hello all! I’m back from 2 weeks in Greece. It was lovely. Spent a few days in Athens, then a week sailing around the Cyclades, then a few days in Crete. I’ll definitely go back there someday; next time I’ll rent a house on a quiet island and just hang out.
I didn’t buy any perfume while on vacation, though I did sniff a bunch of Korres scents (hard to find in the US) while on a l-o-o-o-n-g layover in Athens. Didn’t find anything I wanted to buy.
I encountered some interesting perfume stores in Crete. Entire stores that sell nothing but dupes. The whole store was lined with shelves of generic liter bottles fitted with dispensing spouts; you can buy varying amounts. The labels in one store actually listed the maker & scent being copied (“Tom Ford Lost Cherry”) while the other just listed the name (“Lost Cherry”). How odd! I wonder how this can be legal… (Nope didn’t buy)
I think I will pass on the German theme since all the rotten bits of this trip were German-related (Lufthansa customer [dis]service, and two rounds of running thru Frankfurt airport to make shorter than intended connections).
Orange blossom day! Well perhaps SOTD will be “And the World is Yours” which is enough OB to knock you down. It’s still cool and foggy here; heat wave arrives in a couple of days.
Hey welcome back! I love And the world is yours.
There’s a place around here that sells dupes with the real name’s on them. I don’t see how it’s legal. Someone gave me some once and I sniffed through the bottle but didn’t want to put on my skin. I eventually threw them away.
Yay Greece! I’m going there on Saturday (and through Frankfurt…and was desperately hoping it would be better than the disaster Frankfurt was in December…sigh. Lufthansa service has gotten markedly worse in recent years and is no longer worth the premium I used to pay).
I’m curious to see the shops on Crete, as we’ll be there for 5 days. I probably don’t want any knockoffs, though; I feel like I got that out of my system in high school with Primo and I think my nose is still smelling the screechiness of it across the decades.
I was planning to try Manos Gerakinis when I’m in Athens, since I believe there’s a shop with his perfumes very close to our apartment. Depending on how long we’re in the airport for, maybe I’ll try the Korres scents as well.
Im sorry to hear about your bad time with Lufthansa, because we’ve never had anything but the best of service from them. It’s been a few years, but when we were returning from our last trip to Germany we were upgraded from premium economy to business class right at the gate, very much to our surprise. I guess a lot of things are going downhill these days.
Welcome back!
Greece is beautiful, glad you had a good time.
Welcome home! You smell great.
Welcome back! Sounds like a great vacation and I like your plans for next time
Welcome back! It sounds like you had a fantastic time.
Korres has a brick and mortar store in NYC now.
Hi all. I didn’t post yesterday because it was the stupidest of Mondays. My car battery light came on and I drove to the car place and was told it was possibly the alternator but they couldn’t look at it until Friday. I then left and got about 2 miles down the road when my car started going crazy. Every warning light came on. The windshield wipers and radio turned off, and the heater came on full blast even though it was turned off. I turned around and prayed to get back to the shop. Once I pulled back in my car started shaking and then died. They were able to squeeze me in ( lol) and it’s now fixed and I am on my way to pick it up. ( yay for credit increases) but oh my gosh it was scary.
My sotd is my new bottle of TM Angel Innocent that I bought myself last week for my birthday and it arrived yesterday. Enabler pin to Mossyberry who made Me realize I wanted it when we were recently discussing TM.
However, I now have the association of buy a perfume = car trouble. I’m sure I will continue to risk it though.
Happy Tuesday 🌞
Wow, yeah scary! Glad you made it back to the shop!
Happy belated birthday by the way.🎉 Enjoy your new perfume.
Thank you!
Sounds similar to when our alternator went out about a year ago. We happened to be in a very remote area on the Eastern Shore of VA and waited for like 3 hours until the only AAA operator in the area could haul us back to the mainland.
Happy late bday and if you ever need a refill on your Angel Innocent I’ve got scads of it :)!
Oh man, car trouble in the middle of nowhere is double scary.
EEEK, lillyjo – so happy you made it back to the shop. I hope they were confident that they found the problem. *Proudly pins on EB!* 😀 You will smell wonderful.
They were more confident than I am. Lol. This has been an expensive car year for me.
Car troubles are terrible, glad it’s fixed. And I couldn’t be without my Innocent with its great opening of citrus and the tonka and everything and it’s being easier than Angel and with L’Oréal you can’t be certain if they’re going to keep it in production… etc.
I was really happy to find a Thierry Mugler bottle before the Mugler change. I even got the mini shower gel and lotion! I am pretty sure it got axed. I don’t see it on the official website here.
Yikes! Glad you made it safely to the garage and the car got fixed. Yay on your birthday perfume!
Me too. I’m a nervous driver in a good car! Lol.
Oh, what a pain, that sounds so scary. Car stuff is as bad as dental stuff imo and just as necessary. Glad it’s fixed! I want to know more about AI, off to look it up.
I totally agree. Car/dental are interchangeable when it comes to the dread feeling and the cost!
Wipers and radio dying and the heater coming on? Yeah, that sounds like the alternator went blooey. Glad that you were able to make it back to that auto shop!
I felt like I was in Maximum Overdrive!🤣
Did they say what it was? According to my favorite ex-mechanic, it could also be a computer issue.
It was the alternator. Luckily the sensor thingy was fine after they put in a new one.
I’m in Molecule 01 which fragrantica says is from Germany, but Luckyscent says is from United Kingdom, so maybe half points? lol
Holy smokes! It’s smokey here. We’ve had air alerts on and off all spring and summer but yesterday was the first day that I actually smelled smoke when I went out for a lunchtime walk. It’s even worse today, I think I’ll skip the noon walk and stay inside. It’s supposed to be better tomorrow.🤞
I took the garbage out this morning and thought the whole neighborhood was using their fire places! It’s pretty bad here too.
Full points — Geza Schoen is German. 🙂
I had to drive with the lights on all day today, it was like fog.
I saw pictures of Chicago on the national news tonight. Looked horrible there.
It was! Worst air quality I’ve ever experienced.
Van Cleef & Arpels Moonlight Patchouli
In Prada Infusion de Vetiver for another horrible, cloudy, muggy day without the much needed rain.
On my second cup of coffee and a slice of homemade ice cream cake.
Happy Tuesday! ☕️
Weather sounds miserable but Prada Vetiver, coffee, and ice cream cake is surely the right way to turn the day around!
They are making the day more cheerful for sure! 🌞
We got a lot of rain in NJ yesterday. Sheets and sheets of rain and I think hail. Anyway, I am in NY today and it is just spitting.
It has been drizzling on and off here today, which is making the humidity unbearable. I don’t really see any decent rain happening in the city anytime soon.
Sorry about miserable weather. Your always-good breakfast sounds even better than usual today.
First time baking ice cream bread (not cake, as I wrote above). Very simple to make and I can always try with different ice cream flavors. It always goes well with my coffee during the day.
There’s ice cream bread!? 😍
Yes!!!
https://www.thespruceeats.com/ice-cream-bread-4797815
Wow, looks fantastic! Thank you for the link!
Whenever you make it, please let us know how it came out.
Thanks for the link! I have saved it, and passed it along to a couple of friends!
You are welcome! I hope you and your friends like it! Some people expect to get the sweetness and texture of cake, but they forget that it is bread, not cake.
We stole your rain 🙂
We are expecting again smoke from Canada to arrive tonight, so we need some of your rain as soon as possible!
I really, really wish I could send some of this weather your way. There’s a Flood Watch in effect here!
It feels very oppresive here. Such weird weather. I think summer is going to be overwhelming.
The muggies are absolutely horrible tonight.
Haven’t gotten to the perfume yet but I’m thinking I’ll mix things up and wear Fille de Berlin. Maybe a bit heavy for later today, but this morning is still fairly cool.
Robin — I love both your CP idea, and the teapot!
(your CP idea for today, that is, with the Imaginary Authors. 🙂 )
Best I could do…I don’t have 4 days unless it’s 4 days of Geza Schoen!
In Jil Sander #4. My old bottle had “made in Germany” on the back, but this new BUB I have says Made in France… boooo! LOL
It’s still a pretty scent, but I wonder if it got reformulated like so many others. 🙁
It’s thirty-plus years old, so it’s definitely been reformulated at least a couple of times as regulations change. Nothing escapes the bony grasp of the IFRA, it seems. As long as it still smells good to you — that’s the most important thing.
It doesn’t seem to have the depth or “oomph” of my old bottle, but still very nice. Boo hiss.
You smell lovely. That’ll be in the mix this week for me.
I’m not sure what I’d have worn but I really feel like I missed out on National Orange Blossom day (I guess I can pick an OB for the evening 🙂 I can’t imagine there are a lot of nationwide scent celebrations. Er, not that anyone but us would be celebrating. lol
I am, however, smelling gorgeous in vintage EL Azuree. In anticipation of warm weather ahead, this spring I picked up a handful of samples of vintage greenies (instead of buying some Dusita Sillage Blanc, which I am still tempted to do.) I tested Pucci Vivara first and was able to find a little bottle of it on ebay for a song. I also got a micro mini of Scherrer. I may need a small bottle of Azuree to add to the collection.
It’s been fun discovering Greens from this era. I knew they existed but hadn’t smelled any until recently, despite it being my favorite perfume category when I was younger. More recent greenies have not satisfied until Sillage Blanc came my way and sparked my interest again.
My sympathies to all of you dealing with smoky air and wildfires.
You smell wonderful! I am always swooning over vintage galbanum and vintage oakmoss scents. Some of them, like Chamade and Vol de Nuit, I don’t wear well, but I love to smell them all. As one might guess, oakmoss works better on me!
I don’t wear either of those well either but I love Vol de Nuit on my husband.
It took me a long time to come around to oakmoss but I’m there now 🙂
Hmmm – I see a spritz in Mr. Mossy’s future. Also, glad you joined Team Oakmoss!
You smell wonderful. My aunt wore Azuree in the 70s and my mom wore Aliage, it’s a softer green.
Vintage EL Azuree must smell fantastic! I have a bottle that’s around 10 or 11 years old now, and I enjoy it very much.
In a dreamy cloud of Escada Tender Light, the dialed-down (and still reasonably priced) version of Escada Margartha Ley. I think it has orange blossom, so I’m happily celebrating National Orange Blossom Day too! I just got back from picking up my copy of The Rooster House. Looking forward to settling down with it later.
I think CM8 used to mention Margaretha Ley every so often.
I’m in the remaining wafts of SL Vetiver Oriental. Stretching the Germany CP connection here but I’m sure Uncle Serge has visited Germany at some point in his life so I’m claiming points!
I think we have everyone’s summer weather here in the PNW because it’s very warm and about to get hotter. Predicted temps in the high 80’s to low 90’s this week. 🥵 I’ll be happy to trade weather with anyone at any time.
I’m not a tea set kinda gal but if I were, I’d snap up everything in the posted photo. So pretty! Blue and white has such a great summer vibe. 🫖
I love the tea set as well!
Also, don’t know why but I love rectangle plates / platters.
Yes, I love unexpected shapes in dinner and serving ware! I looked high and low for something unusual like that when I was shopping for dishes for the new camper. I wanted melamine because they’re light and just about unbreakable, and while there some lovely patterns they were all ROUND. ☹️
Trust me, you don’t want the kind of weather I’ve had the past 2 days.
I’m quite sure I don’t! I’m headed to the coast tomorrow where is 20-25F cooler than this window to hell. 🔥 I hope this isn’t the way it’s going to play out until September…I also hope you get a cool breeze but I’ve heard this “heatwave” is intense across the nation. Here’s to hoping we ALL get a cool break!
Getting too much rain at one time. Someone needs to turn off the spigot!
SotD is Gris Dior, by Dior
The only connection I can make with Germany is this:
german weather can be much like Dutch weather, in autumn and winter there can be awfully long periods with GREY skies😅
The Netherlands are almost part of Germany, so I think you really need not make any effort this week.
Haha 😄
I agree, especially for the cp. Makes it so much easier 😅
Actually, back in the day there could be long stretches of cool weather with grey skies in summer up in northern Germany, as well. 🙂
Hahaha~! Last week I thought I hit the ball out of the park wearing Unter den Linden. Wrong week . . .
And y’all were too polite to mention it. 🙂
In Boucheron’s Santal de Kandy, with my space heater on at my feet. 52 degrees outside, and grey.
Those are crazy cold temps for late June!
Saving the one known German item for Friday. In Vetiver Pour Elle again, and it’s nice knowing there’s at least one other person out here who wears it. Perhaps it counts now as a vintage, aka historical perfume…?
Like you, I think I only have one German option for Friday.
Tomorrow I’m visiting Oxford with my brother, a perfume friend from CA I never met before and her husband.
SJP Dawn kept me company, and tonight Coty Imprevu EDC, debating if I also need the EDT, I keep watching but didn’t feel compelled, the EDC is very good already and lasts.
I can’t help but associate Oxford with Endeavour. Be careful! Seems like a lot of people get murdered there 😁
😀
Have a great time tomorrow.
How long will your brother be staying?
Thank you Lillyjo, my friend and I are going to exchange boxes of samples! But we are also visiting the Ashmolean Museum
My brother is here for ten days.
Enjoy your trip to Oxford with everyone!
Thank you Jalapeno, I’ve never been to O, looking forward to it.
That’s a lovely tea set. Too bad I don’t drink tea regularly.
I’m wearing Fille de Berlin, and just might eke out another three scents for German week. I know two for sure, I might have to do some digging for the third.
It’s a whole china service…so you could buy everything but the tea pot 🙂
I will be in FdB this week for sure.
I’m wearing Neela Vermeire’s Ashoka, for no reason other than I love it.
Always a good enough reason!
Wearing L’homme sage by Divine, which is French and France shares a border and quite a complex history with Germany, so I’m good, or so I tell myself.
Yeah you are good
I just spent a week in Alsace.
french-german signs and names everywhere 😄
Whereabouts were you? Such a beautiful part of France.
Yeah its so beautiful! We visit this region relatively often (also practical… you can get there in one day by car from NL)
This time we stayed in Les Vosges (Murbach to be precise).
You take an exit to the west somewhere between Colmar and Mulhouse, into the mountains. 😊
And we also spent 2 nights in Strasbourg.
I’m wearing a sample of SL Écrin de Fumée, which is very nice but not at $275 CAD. Maybe if it shows up at discounters for cheap.
I have a bottle of Rundholz, but it is very heavy and not seasonally appropriate for high heat and humidity. Also, all my Annette Neuffers are in San Diego. But a fair amount of my niche perfumes were purchased in Germany when my husband was working there. So I’m going with that.
In other good news, my new stove shows up Friday, three weeks earlier than promised, after my previous order was stolen off the truck. (!) Hallelujah. I have been without an oven since March.
That’s great news about the stove altho not about the theft, yikes.
Glad you got your oven!
Yay for a new stove, but what the heck about a stolen one!?
It was pretty crazy, I got a call from the merchant saying it had been stolen in transport, first time I’ve had that happen. I was very disappointed because I love to bake and no oven was tough, then I thought it would be delayed until July 18th. So I was quite surprised when they said it would be here Friday. Yay!
What a saga! Not fun when a major appliance is MIA.
Ugh — what a pain, but I’m glad you’ll have the oven now.
I took my mom to the Dr today (routine) and wanted a quiet perfume, so I dug out Donna Karan Cashmere Mist. What a soft, pretty scent, why don’t I ever wear it? It’s been on six hours and still smells distinctive, jasmine and woods are what I get. Very nice, I have the edt. This is the bottle I got for $10 at an Amish store, in the before times.
Hey, wait a sec, I just made a German connection, the Amish are primarily from Germany so I can claim points!
Btw Robin, creative use of a creative brand, excellent.
Sometimes you don’t realize the gems staring at you!
Glad that your Mom’s appointment was a routine one.
I’ve used the Cashmere Mist deodorant for years, it’s really nice.
Hey, you didn’t too too badly yourself!
Late today! I had an afternoon doctor appointment and then started a load of laundry when I got home. The appointment included an EKG and a tetanus shot. I can’t remember how long ago my previous one was.
Right now it is storming something fierce outside, with a blast of thunder that startled me. Teflon kitty is nowhere to be seen, since she *hates* thunder.
SOTD = back in Korres Guava lotion.
Awww, Larry sends his sympathy to Teflon kitty, he is very scared of thunder too.
Poor Larry! 🙀
Oy about Teflon kitteh!
She ended up snuggling next to me on the couch after the lightning settled down.
I hope your arm doesn’t get too sore!
So far I am still feeling fine. The doctor used a very small needle that didn’t hurt when he gave the shot.
Let’s see how I am tomorrow, though.
Beautiful tea set, Robin!
SOTD = April Aromatics Lotus Rising
W00tw00t – points!
As I am typing this comment, there’s thunder raging outside … I have not gone to the window to see what’s what. We do need the rain … and also to stave off what I am hearing about the Canadian wildfire smoke wafting its way back to the northeast. 💨
Sounds like almost all of New Jersey was getting some kind of wild weather at the same time! The airports are a total mess right now. ⚡⛈️
Last night was pouring and rumbling, too. Waiting for it any minute now.
Poor Canadian friends that are struggling.
That wildfire smoke is something else!
We are getting a lot of smoke in Montréal, unfortunately the promised rain & thunderstorms have not materialized. Hoping eventually we’ll get it.
Oh no, is the smoke coming back? I didn’t know, and was so happy to see the rain might be done for now.
I was back in Bronze Goddess today Thankfully I slept like a rock last night; don’t think I budged until 8:30. We left the a/c off at the hotel last night and that made all the difference.
More cleanup today when we got home, this time the garage. The strata rented a bin for the complex so we got rid of a bunch of ‘extra’ wood from various old projects and also took apart an old entertainment unit (also in the garage) that held all my winter boots and some tools. Everything worth keeping found new homes.
We had a mishap with the glass door, it shattered trying to put it in a safe place! So we had an extra hour of cleanup to do with that. Thankfully no one was injured! Slowly but surely, the never-ending purge continues.
Eek to the shattered glass!
On the other hand, nice work cleaning up. How on earth do you find homes for things? This is a major struggle.
Just on a shelf that was hidden behind the entertainment unit!
Decluttering, purging, and cleaning can be difficult. Yay you for taking on that task!
It’s alot. We are wanting to eventually move.
Yeah, I am going thru the same thing. I hate moving and am not looking forward to it.
You’re starting to inspire me with the decluttering.
Stop doing that! Lol🤣
I’m glad nobody was hurt with the broken glass.
Sorry lillyjo! I don’t mean to make more work for you! Moving has been on our list for awhile. Long ago when we listed our place for sale, the realtor at the time kind of laughed at our garage and said we have lots to clear out! It really isn’t overcrowded as there are shelves. And it’s neat for the most part. Just needs a good go-through!
Needless to say, we didn’t renew our listing with him.
I’ve had the same thing happen with an entertainment center, no fun. But it feels really good to purge and streamline. Having moved three times in the last three years I have a lot of experience (more than I would like).
Oh no! That glass is dangerous! The new unit we have is very simple and no glass.
Yup, you would be a moving expert whether you want to be or not. Hope you are loving your new home.
I wore Pansy to a fun lunch with family I really like.
Glad you had a nice outing with good family members. Our family outings are usually with a mix of great people and others who aren’t so fun!
Oh so glad you had a fun time!
Sounds like a win-win with perfume and the company you kept!
