It’s Hump Day and International Gin & Tonic Day. Birthdays: John le Carré, Peter Max, Divine, Philip Pullman. PSA: The splitmeet will start on Saturday. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in Olivier Durbano Black Tourmaline for the character Crowley (played by David Tennant) in the 2019 series Good Omens (from the novel of the same name by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, which I have never read).
Reminder: on 10/21, for Ursula LeGuin's birthday, choose a work of speculative fiction or a character from such a work, and wear the fragrance that you think fits. Your chosen work can be written, audio or visual. Bonus points if you choose a work of LeGuin's or one of the shortlisted works for the inaugural Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: top image is a promotional shot for Season 2 of Good Omens, expected to be released in Summer 2023.
Feeling like root beer this morning, will rummage around for Mandorlo di Sicilia or maybe Hypnotic Poison.
I think I am the only person that doesn’t smell root beer in hypnotic poison.
It’s not really strong, but I do smell it. The Mandorlo di Sicilia has a much more pronounced root beer note. Wishing I still had some more vintage Boucheron Trouble too!
I don’t remember a root beer note in HP either. It smelled like my Dad’s achy muscle liniment to me when it first came out.
I get root beer from Alien.
I loved Goutal Myrrhe Ardente for its root beer note. I can’t find it anywhere now.
Good morning.
Sotd is Youth Dew.
Tea right now is a blend of black tea, rose petals and lavender.
You smell lovely, and I bet your tea does, too!
Oooh, that tea sounds wonderful!
2nd that.
Ooo you smell great!
Both your SOTD and your tea sound wonderful.
After wallowing in Black Orchid yesterday, I’m ready for something lighter so I chose Clair de Musc today. It’s still gray, wet and chilly, but at least the snow is gone.
How much snow did you get?
I just saw the U.P got 17 inches!
Yikes! That’s too much at one time anytime of the year, let alone in October!😱
Oh, that’s too much for October! We had a couple inches at one point but the community just south of here had 3+” and had downed trees and power lines. Brr!
17 inches in October!
That’s absolutely nuts!
I am wearing Bois Farine by Jean Claude Ellena.
From his book , I learned that the smell comes from the flowers of a shrub Ruizia Cordata in the Reunion Island. Apparently they smell like flour.
You smell great Hera!
I’m in Hermann A Mes Cotes, as a relief from yesterday’s too sweet Sintra.
Day three of HDM and today it’s Mary Malone, astrophysicist, former nun, accidental anthropologist, one of my favourite characters in all the books. I’m putting her in Serge Lutens Santal Blanc, because I find it forthrightly austere but with a sensual undercurrent that doesn’t reveal itself at first. It’s one of few fragrances I know of that doesn’t feel like you’re applying a scent *to* yourself so much as using it to reveal something *of* yourself, like it really is a part of you.
Nice pairing!
I love your description of Santal Blanc !
Love this image! Santal Blanc smells like paint thinner on me, but I like imagining how it smells on others.
Hello all!
I’m in SJP Stash; such a treat since I finally got a replacement bottle. I drained two bottles before it disappeared from shelves. It’s been taken off the SJP site so who knows if it will ever come back. (Covet is there for only $50 per 100ml but I don’t need that one replaced yet!)
I love the coconutty woody scent.
It seemed like Stash had such good reviews and quite a following. I was surprised when I no longer saw it at Ulta.
I think Stash want a huge hit here: it was relegated to a bottom shelf at my Ulta.
That is interesting. Possibly because it has a wallop of sillage, but I have gotten more compliments wearing Stash than any other perfume I own. Surprised it is getting nixed. Very similar in scent, but sadly lacking the wallop, is Cedrus by Fiele, just fyi.
It really does have a lovely sillage. It reminds me of Hermes Santal Massoia but that one is very subtle and creamy.
I remember reading that something in Stash was getting hard to source?
You smell great, I love Stash. I found a gift set at TJMaxx after Stash left Ulta so I am set for a while.
Speaking of TJX, I want to mention that stopped by our local today and they had gotten in so many more perfumes than I’ve seen in many moons. I wonder if “supply chain issues” have fallen away? I’ll be checking back more often between now and Christmas😍
Thanks for the info!
wearing the original Agent Provocateur this morning. I can’t imagine a large clothing brand coming out with something like this now, and it’s kind of a shock that they did in 2000 as well.
That’s a good point.
You smell SO good!
I’m in Vanille Insensee. The juice has turned quite amber over the past few years. Still smells great though.
Anther chilly one this morning, but at least the sun is out.🌞
You smell wonderful – good to know the juice holds up!
I’m in Hallucinogenic Pearl by A Lab on Fire for Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro. HP has that “Barbie doll head” vibe on me, which seems sort of AI appropriate? Or maybe Stepford Wives by Ira Levin would be a better match?
I loved that book! Great pick.
Oh perfect!!! Loved that book.
“Hallucinogenic Pearl” is one of the best perfume names that I have ever heard.
In Vivacious because I can.
David Tennant is definitely my screen crush. But I’ve watched at least one, maybe two episodes of Good Omens, and just couldn’t get into it. That said, I have subjected my family more than once to (which in my humble-crush-laden opinion is grossly under appreciated) the rom-com The Decoy Bride. That movie cheers me up time and again. However, in the spirit of truth in advertising, I have to warn that the plot is entirely implausible, and it does get 23% on Rotten Tomatoes. But honestly, if you want to watch a cheerful Scottish isle fairytale, it will do the trick. Actually, I have another that fits that bill as well, I Know Where I’m Going!, directed by Michael Powell (1945), also silly and enormously fun (and it gets far better reviews– 100% on Rotten Tomatoes).
Twins on a DT crush but not being able to get into Good Omens. I’ve never seen The Decoy Bride, but Mr. Vee is away this weekend, so it shall be my Friday Night Feature. Thanks!
I love watching movies set elsewhere and in particular, British isles. (Secret of Roan Inish or Local Hero anyone?). I’ll have to look for both of those movies.
Oh I love love love Secret of Roan Inish! I will have to look up Local Hero.
I adored those! Watched both more than once. ❤️
After a terrible, horrible, etc., night, I’m in Cristalle EDT to wake me up. It’s doing as well as it can, but my coffee is probably making more of a dent. ☕️
So sorry you had such a rough night, hope your day is manageable. You smell great.
I hope your day is much better than last night!
Foo! I hope the coffee and the Cristalle help and that your internal clock resets itself tonight. You smell great!
I hope it’s a better night for you!
Blargh. Hope that the coffee and the Cristalle do their magic for you.
Continuing with my His Dark Materials week, in honour of Philip Pullman’s birthday. Today I’m wearing Zagorsk, for Serafina Pekkala (and, by extension, Farder Coram). Seemed to be the best scent I had to capture the northern forest and cloud pine.
Long week — is it only Wednesday? I need more coffee.
Nice pick!
Hope the week speeds up 🙂
Today I’m wearing Fenty, simply because I was browsing Fenty lipsticks on the Sephora site. I love how many companies are creating refillable lipsticks!
Robin, Good Omens is one of my top 5 favorite books. I’m sure the series is very good, but I refuse to watch it.
Do you have to wash the container before each refill? If yes, what is the washing suggestion?
I think you use it until the inner bullet is empty or you want to swap, and then just snap it out? I have one from Rose Inc and it takes about 5 seconds to remove the inner bullet.
I just picked up the holiday gift set of the Fenty lip glosses. There are three colors: a nude which looks opaque but wears very sheer, a neutral Creme pink, and the pièce de ré·sis·tance, at least for me, Fuchsia Flex. We’re did you find her perfume? I’ve looked online but can’t seem to locate it anywhere…
It’s only available to buy on the Fenty site itself. I bought a decant at Surrender to Chance. And then I bought a second, larger decant. I should just buy the bottle.
I always meant to read it but didn’t, and Neil Gaiman was heavily involved in the making of the series so I gave myself permission. The truth is that I’ll probably never read it now, so maybe it was a mistake.
Waiting for the laundromat to open so I can get some washing done. Currently wearing Tauer’s Vanilla Flash which is working well on this smoky, misty, coolish morning.
Looking forward to a few days off after tonight. This winter is going to be just horrible, work wise. I can feel it in my bones. Just read an article about melting glaciers that are releasing previously ice bound ancient bacteria and viruses that will be transmitted to animals and eventually to humanity. Oh joy! Body condoms, here we come!
Who’s got good news? 😅
😅
Somehow, despite the laundry reference, the body condoms comment made me feel, oh, not as clean?
Exactly how I feel every time I go to work! Lol 😂
My dog is very happy in a sunbeam right now?
That’s my only good news. But she is extremely happy.
Well, that’s excellent news! 🐶 Cheers me right up!
You smell great Deva!
I went to wear VF last night and found that mine had gone off.
Really? That’s too bad! You want me to send you some? I have plenty and it still smells fabulous…👍🏼
Thanks for the offer but I think I won’t replace it. I need to work on wearing some other neglected decants.
Teflon kitty wanted to play fetch several times this afternoon. But now she is snoozing on the kitty cat heating pad.
How’s that?
Perfect! 😻
I’m trying Profumum Roma’s Sorriso today and there is a lot happening in it. Chocolate syrup, vanilla, and a whisper of mint at first, with coconut playing now you see me now you don’t. After the first 15 minutes or so, I get tropical fruit that I can’t quite place. Papaya maybe. It seems like is should be sugary, but the sweetness is rather restrained. And underneath it all is a note I can’t identify — sort of but not really doll’s head, slightly medicinal, and also waxy? If they made this in a body butter I would go through tubs of it.
Tea today is a combo of various earl gray variants that were down to the last tsp or so of leaves. I need to refill my tins this weekend.
I think that’s an excellent description of Sorriso, and I like it!
Wearing Bois des Iles again and just home from teeth cleaning/dental check-up. All good news for once, except that I wish I’d had time for coffee beforehand because I’d like some, but don’t want to mess up my clean teeth now. Next up: pedicure. I’ll be a whole new me. 😉
It’s always such a relief to hear “Everything looks good” at the dentist. Enjoy your pedicure!
Yay for a good check up at the dentist!
I have nothing for the CP today, but I am in HDP 1804, which is cheering me up a lot on this gray chilly day.
I was away all last week at weaving school (!). That is something I have wanted to do for years and things finally worked out! It was a no scented body products environment by school policy so I didn’t even get to use my little travel sprays that I took along.
I seem to be alone in my close friend group in never having read Neil Gaiman, but I did enjoy the good omens series on TV quite a bit. Otherwise, I don’t have many speculative fiction options but we’ll see if I can come up with something by week’s end. Also I’m working on my voice to text skills this week so apologies for the likely greater than usual number of typos.
Weaving school! I’m so jealous. I took a weaving class at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston twenty years or so ago, and I loved it, but it didn’t feel like the real thing, because it was just a piece on a small hand loom. I’d love to have a real loom.
What I have right now is a rigid heddle loom (Schacht Flip 25”) on a floor stand. I’ve had it for five years, and I love it – have made lots of towels and small blankets. I desperately want a floor loom, but am still figuring out where we can make space for it and which kind (mechanism) I want. But I am sure I’ll continue to use the RHL even after I get the floor loom. If you haven’t peeked into the weaving world I’m the past 5-10 years, the resurgence of interest in simpler looms (like the RHL) and the accompanying increase in patterns and technical hacks may surprise you.
Your class sounds amazing! I look textile arts.
*love* textile arts
It was. Exhausting, but amazing.
What a great thing to have done. Did you learn a lot?
I learned SO MUCH. It was a pretty intense week.
Excellent.
What a great experience. Like Holly, I love textile arts (along with ceramics). Very cool.
Inspired by springpansy and a recent conversation about leather scents, I’m wearing Skive, a beautiful smoky leather.
You just reminded me I have Skive as well!
It’s perfect this time of year🍁
Yes to leather!
I am gauging interest in a split of Vero.Profumo Onda Voile d’Extrait. I’d be doing four 10ml splits from a 50ml bottle and I think the price would be about $60 including shipping. Anyone interested?
I’m wearing Roja Dove Lilac extrait this morning and waiting for the rain to show up on Friday. It’s still awfully smoky here but temps have cooled off.
Yes! Yes! Yes! Where on earth did you find a bottle?!
Campomarzio in Rome carries both the EDPs and the Voiles. Shipping is an outrageous 70€ but it seems to be applied per order and not per bottle. If anybody wants a whole bottle I’d be happy to order it with the split bottle (if the split goes).
I haven’t been on that site in quite a while. I got a bottle of Naja from them when doing an order with another NSTer a while back. They did say they’d be getting the VdE versions, but after months of checking the website and not seeing them, I gave up. If the split does go through, I’ll buy a full bottle and split shipping with you.
I’ll take one if you offer!
I’m curious as to what “Voile d’Extrait” means? Is it a lighter version of an extrait but not as light as an EDP?
I think that is the idea.
FYI: Vero’s edp, VdE, and extrait of the same scent can be quite different. Onda VdE is one of my top five perfumes ever but I hemmed and hawed purchasing a fb because of the cost. I swapped someone here for a partial bottle of the edp, which I didn’t care for. A totally different perfume than the vde. I’ve never smelled the extrait at all. I would google and see the difference in the notes for the edp, vde, and extrait.
Perfume Unicorn Alert!
I’m twins with my daughter today. We are wearing bbw White Coconut Caramel body spray. Does anyone have a suggestion for a winter non-beachy coconut perfume?
I had a bottle of CSP Coco Figue that I really enjoyed. Unfortunately, I swapped it away before I realized just how MUCH I enjoyed it. If Fig is no-go, then skip it, but the coconut and Figue together are really nice. Big % off here:

Thanks for the info!
Sunday Forever has a nice coconut scent called “coconuts”. I burned through my 15 ml bottle. It’s a literal coconut scent.
I looked this up. It sounds good and the travel spray is a decent price.
I haven’t sniffed The Body Shop’s Coconut body butter, but that might be an option. Especially with winter weather heading our way.
I’m going to continue my Earthsea theme, I love it, but somehow it’s never led to read many other books by Ursula LeGuin.
Ormond Jayne Woman is reminiscent of the forests where the stories start, so that will suit me on a sunny morning. It’s cold as yet, but it’s promising.
And she wrote so much!! That might be part of why I’ve been slow to read her at all.
In LouLou for the CP. I think Lenina Crowne and Fanny Crowne in Brave New World, who our narrator tells us were not related, would both have worn a perfume like this. But I like it in spite of thinking it would be at home in a dystopia.
You smell great. I look forward to wearing Loulou.
Smoothie is apples and yogurt.
Two cheapies today, Avon Casbah during the day and now Yves Rocher Nature Millénaire.
You could do budget week 🙂
😃 I have more than enough to do a week.
“Budget month” sounds like January, LOL!
6 sprays of Lush American Cream today!😁
Wow!
But it’s the 30 ml bottle which is pretty short/squat so I think that delivers less perfume than a 100 ml per spray….at least that’s what I have always kind of thought but am not sure. I always imagined more perfume is emitted per spray from a large bottle b/c the atomizer line, as it were, is longer so more juice gets emptied. I shall post about this tomorrow to see what our Collective thinks about this. 🙂
Interesting, I never thought about that, but did not assume the spray emptied the entire line. But I know NOTHING on this subject.
You need 2 more 🤣
Amen, sister.
So I just posted to Robin above and will post about this tomorrow. But I always though shorter/smaller bottle emit less perfume per spray than larger bottles but not sure if others think this too. You are a generous sprayer 🙂 …do you think this is true? Her is my full comment to Robin…

Can I just snuggle next to you? You smell amazing.
Sit right down! I do smell amazing. 🙂
Estée Lauder Private Collection
Worthy 🙂
I’m sampling Hera for the second time and liking it much more than I did before.
That’ll cost you 😉
This has been the longest week, sigh! I have not been participating in CP, I’ve worn Eau Capitale (loving this one more and more), Chypre Palatin, and finally the new Shalimar Tonka.
Oh no…hopefully it’s long because you’ve got lots of things going well!
I took Monday off to run an hours-long errand that I had been dreading for months. Somehow, taking a day off can make the week feel longer?! 😝 At least the errand is DONE!
You have been smelling wonderful this whole, long week:)
Hang in there! Friday’s coming!
Another somewhat sunny and definitely chilly day for me. It was also laundry day.
SOTD = 19-69 Female Christ EdP, from the sample stash. I needed a heavier incense perfume for the cooler weather. This definitely fits the bill with vanilla, incense, and patchouli.
Vanilla with incense sounds very good.
It really hit the spot with today’s chilly weather. It would be perfect for cold & wet weather, IMO.
This sounds wonderful!
Definitely worth sampling at the very least!
Incense always reminds of you.
Awwww, thanks! I guess I am fairly consistent in choosing that particular note.
You just sent my antennae quivering. …
I rather like it. A travel spray would be the perfect size, though since a little goes a LONG way.
SOTD = Mugler Angel Muse EDP
I am sure I got my bottle when it first launched and now, 6 years later, I’ve barely made a dent! Lillyjo once suggested that I turned it upside down and while I did that, it still looks full! First world problems.
https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj6XxWdOmfZ/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
In other news, Saks is having a gift card event! Will I get a large discount? Time will tell…it’s kinda funny how the SA there started with the highest tier which was a $900 gift card if I spent $3,000. No and no and no and no.
I noticed my Muse bottle is starting to get icky around the sprayer and cap. Mine is half full right side up and a quarter full upside down!
I’m not sure I have ever used my Angel Muse travel spray. I think I still have a sample floating around in the Sample Stash.
Oh too bad I’m not doing a His Dark Materials pairing on Philip Pullman’s birthday, but I’m planning to do one on Friday. Today’s pairing didn’t go quite as planned, but it still my works. I’m in CB I Hate Perfume Cradle of Light water perfume as a match for Jeff VanderMeer’s Annihilation, and really for his whole Southern Reach trilogy. This was my first time wearing the water perfume after using up a sample of the absolute after wearing it for some years. The absolute is a very fluorescent green kind of alien smelling floral, which is what I think fits the Area X from the book. But I got a surprise with the water perfume in that it’s very floral and not the fluorescent green I was going for. But! The pairing still holds up because of the perfume name. A lighthouse figures very prominently into the book and series. 😎
I applaud all of that even though I do not know that book/series at all, and if I ever knew what CoL smelled like, I’ve forgotten.
I did find that the water perfumes took some getting used to.
Greetings all! We arrived yesterday morning, 5 am! Monday was a long, somewhat harrowing day. Started out around 7am in Bowling Green, Missouri; it was a cold start to the day. I applied Prada Amande as my sotm. Went through St. Louis a few hours later, got through as fast as possible. Is there ever not busy time? Then arrived in Nashville after lunch. We arrived in Chattanooga for what was to be overnight, but the hotel was more than sketchy. I couldn’t stay any longer than for a 3 hour rest, so we left at 9 pm. My hubby drove thru Atlanta then we pushed thru to our destination early morning.
Just wondering when city and highway driving became so aggressive? Atlanta was like nothing we’ve seen. Cars criss-crossing in front, going at least 20 mph over the speed limit. And the semi trucks passing in tandem, nearly crossing into our lane. Wow, and this was a Monday night. Nashville and St. Louis weren’t much better. Thankfully my hubby is a very confident driver and former driving instructor. Not for the faint of heart!
Currently fanning in lotion laden with carrot-seed oil. And very happy to be relaxing.
Glad you made it safely!
My nerves can’t take the highways at all. I had anxiety just reading your post. Lol.
Thank you, lillyjo! Me too! I’m so happy to be here!
I did not know that there was a Bowling Green in Missouri. The only one I ever heard of was in Kentucky.
Atlanta driving has been horrible for at least the past 20 years, from what I have been told. I have not had the displeasure of driving in that area personally.
Well, there’s Bowling Green, OH, at least, too.
I plugged the name Bowling Green into my weather app, there’s 5 separate locations, all in different states!
Just for fun, we googled aggressive drivers; Atlanta was #4 on the list. We were shocked that there were no accidents along the way, anywhere. My friend’s brother is a race car driver; he probably would enjoy driving there. Displeasure, good description.
Yay, so glad you are there safely!
Definitely drivers are more aggressive than they used to be.
Thank you, Robin. And wow! We were half-jokingly saying that the whole day was like being in a race.
Gin & tonic day? Sounds like Angelique sous la Pluie!
Done and dusted!
