It's Hump Day, Twelfth Night, National Bird Day, George Washington Carver Day and Alvin Ailey’s birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?
I’m in green grass and vetiver, all wrong for the community project: Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Re-Assess.
Reminder: on 1/7, wear a fragrance to match Very Peri, Pantone's color of the year for 2022. ("Displaying a carefree confidence and a daring curiosity that animates our creative spirit, inquisitive and intriguing PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri helps us to embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision as we rewrite our lives. Rekindling gratitude for some of the qualities that blue represents complemented by a new perspective that resonates today, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri places the future ahead in a new light. We are living in transformative times. PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri is a symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and the transition we are going through.")
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: top image shows a puddle of Orly Color Lab's Very Peri nail polish ("To celebrate @pantone Color of the Year we whipped up a special shade for the occasion. Our interpretation of Very-Peri is a dynamic periwinkle blue with a futuristic fuchsia gold glitter"), $20 for 18 ml.
I’m wearing New Musk Man, which is a favorite, especially for cooler weather.
And there is plenty of cooler weather to go around 🙂
Good morning.
Sotd is Nightingale, heavy.
Thinking of making New York Cheesecake but need to do groceries first and I will also be picking up ice-cream. Am I the only one that loves to eat ice-cream in the winter?
Currently drinking hojicha, loving the roasted flavour.
I love ice cream in all weathers, and also hojicha!
I do not think my ice cream intake changes with the weather at all.
We are not big ice cream eaters anytime, but from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, the eggnog flows freely at our house. I think Kroger’s regular eggnog is as good as any around, though we sometimes get other brands.
Same here with the eggnog! I’ve seen recipes for homemade eggnog, but I dont need to learn how to make it. Dont need to have it around all the time.
Let’s add a couple of ‘, shall we? ?
I will have the occasional spoonful of Haagen-Dazs in the winter, but I do enjoy it more in warmer weather.
That nail polish is love at first sight even though I know I’d only wear it a couple of times, if that. It’s that hidden shimmer.
Wearing Imaginary Authors Waffle Cone from a sample and I like it much more than the first wear. It dries down with smoky notes like Memoirs of a Trespasser so I don’t need a bottle but I’ll enjoy my sample.
Seriously! I love the polish, and it’s right up my alley in terms of the colors I like to wear. I wear nail polish almost every single day, and even so, 18mL is TOO MUCH nail polish. If they sold it as a mini, I’d buy it. I am constantly trying to use up my nail polish. I finished 14 bottles in 2021 (although that includes some top coat and base coat), and I am trying to use up at least 10 bottles this year. That will still leave me with about 13 bottles, which is plenty. I love buying minis because then I can use them up before they go all gloopy and awful.
I don’t know why more companies don’t do polish minis — I am much more likely to spring for color that is not usually my style if I am buying only a small amount of it. (As with perfume!) that said, I have not worn ANY polish since prior to the pandemic. I look at my collection and think about it, but I rarely want to sit down and put the stuff on.
I do like the polish color!
I’ve only started painting again since my surgery, I stopped about a year before covid. I’ve been trying to cull my polish collection for ages and it’s surprisingly difficult! I love the pretty colors.
I don’t wear nail polish but recently saw mini bottles by Mavala – a Swiss company.
I love the color(s) of the polish, too–it’s so much prettier with the shimmer added than in the regular Pantone color palette by itself.
Definitely.
I have decided that despite the fact that I generally navigate towards blues, purples and pinks, I don’t like Very Peri. I don’t know why.
It’s gray and dull?
Ha! But one year recently they actually did grey, and I minded that less than this.
It seems too heavy, almost a bit suffocating.
Yes, something like that.
Agree. Beautiful nail polish, but I stopped buying polish except for getting some of the kind that is pressed on and lasts longer. I would likely buy a mini in this.
Wearing Rose Anonyme today, and marvelling at how sweet it smells compared to Ta’if or my Ajmals…
You smell gorgeous. I fell in love with Rose Anonyme as soon as it was released. I still have some left and will most likely repurchase.
Thanks!
I’m quite happy to own a travel spray of Rose Anonyme!
Seven Sprays of Silky Woods.
May I borrow that for the opening line of a poem?
It’s 7 syllables — could be the middle line of a haiku.
I was going to keep going…feel free to use.
Good morning, all. The world is wrapped in grey mist today, so today’s rose is one that’s wrapped in grey chiffon: Paestum Rose.
Paestum Rose is very nice, pretty elegant and poised too.
That all sounds nice. I have been experimenting with rose and peppermint oil blends , which is fun. Enjoy your day!
Wonderful choice.
Perfect! Love Paestum Rose!
You’ve been on a rose kick lately, haven’t you?
I have! Rose is one of my personal most happiness-and-optimism-inducing scents (a close second to neroli), and I’m feeling the need for its benevolent influence. I could probably do a whole rose month, I have so darn many…
A month of rose perfumes would be like giving yourself a big, lovely bouquet, right?
Starting the day in Broken Theories and really wishing they made a 15 or 30 ml bottle of this. As it is, what’s left of my decant will probably be more than enough for my needs — it’s just that I love the bottle labels Kerosene does. Post shower I’ll probably change to something lighter for a Pilates session and errand-running … not sure what though. I feel somewhat disconnected, or discombobulated, or something, this morning — probably watched too much news last night. Oy.
I hope you find a bit of light to ease your mood today.
I have, and you provided it! I was just about to reply to your post below to say that it makes me incredibly happy to see you feeling so well after the year you’ve had — your positivity reminds me to have a better attitude myself, and for that I thank you.
So glad to hear your day is on the up. I hope the rest of your week is happy.
I had a similar feeling this morning. Thinking that it might be time for another “news diet”.
Currently unscented, but after my shower I plan to wear something cheerful. Planning a small brunch today — also to encourage more cheer in the world — for a friend who gets depressed on her birthday. Hopefully, camaraderie and crispy pork belly will get her over this hump. 🙂
Crispy pork belly will get me over most humps!
A good friend always helps! What a nice idea.
That sounds lovely!
How could crispy pork belly fail to cheer anyone? Ever? Clearly you are a great friend!
Yummm ?
Wow! That’s a delicious way to cure the birthday blues!
In Iris Malikhan today, from last spring’s splitmeet, so am getting closer to the CP although nothing in this one smells terribly “peri” to me.
Another sunny day in Galway. It is going to rain all day tomorrow (so they say), so we made the most of today’s weather to walk and do errands. I will spend most of tomorrow in transit to/from or at the airport; with the continuing flight disruptions in the US we are expecting delayed arrivals among our students.
Hope tomorrow goes well, skalolazka!
I’m so glad you made it to Ireland!
Are you planning on visiting Clonkeen Atelier or the Burren perfumery? Maybe you already have?
Enjoy! We loved Galway when we visited a few years back. The Aran Islands nearby were also the perfect getaway.
SOTD Esprit d’Oscar -was in the mood for its almond marzipan tonka.
Robin’s answer to my Mumbai Noise comment (drydown similar to Passage d’Enfer) made me doubt my nose, so I went in search of reviews by people without covid- nose. Persolaise also mentions the Catholic incense in Mumbai Noise. Honestly, there is nothing light, warm or fun filled in that perfume (my imaginary idea of Mumbai, I’ve never been). Just a jumble of notes up top (NO coffee) and the PdE aroma chemical drydown.
Oh my, never let a comment of mine make you doubt your nose! I should have added that 95% of Byredo’s output was a disappointment to me.
No worries! I tried it because of the name (and the SA said it was new) and hadn’t read any reviews. Your comment just reminded me that my nose may not be 100% yet.
I think I’ve been disappointed in 100% of Byredo’s output! Did not get to try the 1996 …. one, but am honestly not bothered by it any more. I think I’m kind of miffed about the misrepresentation, not really about the bad (IMO) perfume.
I liked Rose of No Man’s Land when I tried it some years back, but not enough to buy a bottle.
I have never bought any. But I liked 1996 and Flowerhead, and of course Pulp. I know lots of people like Bal d’Afrique.
The only Byredo that has really spoken to me is Pulp. And a little bit of that goes a LONG way! My sample has lasted for years…
I opted to wear Carner Barcelona D600 today.
https://www.instagram.com/p/CYWSpEcoX6d/
This is one of my favorite perfumes. Thanks to you. I have a BUB as well!
Wearing Tobacco Vanille today. Will be getting some groceries after work today.
You smell great!
My neighbor is returning home from six weeks in Denmark tomorrow.
I need to go get some fruit and milk and yogurt for her after work and turn on her heat. It’s been chilly here, but warm compared to Copenhagen.
Im pretty sure that our bathroom, back in the sixties, was wallpapered and painted a colour that matches Very Peri. I loved it. Funny enough I watched Gena Roland in Woman Under the Influence yesterday and she had a terrific wardrobe including one swirly lilac dress, that also fitted the Very Peri look. So I’m thinking of 60s and 70s perfumes to fit the CP, and thinking Rive Gauche. My mum wore it for a time. I was doing the 15 minute wait after my Covid booster yesterday and was enthralled by the bright yellow shoes of the woman next to me. Immediate longing for bright shoes. Why don’t I get some? Feeling good as gold.
Rowlands ( I swear I spelt it correctly).
I saw that movie when it came out and loved it. I should watch it again now, as I don’t remember much. Speaking of movies about women in somewhat extreme situations, have you seen The Lost Daughter yet? It’s quite good.
I haven’t watched Lost Daughter yet but I will ASAP. It’s funny but I never got into the Elena Ferrante novels and stories and gave up after one. I don’t know why. Loved Gena Rowlands.
I read the quartet that was so popular, so it kept me reading, but I didn’t much like it. And I haven’t read this book. Without saying too much, I have reservations about how it’s been shifted into an English-language framework for purposes of this movie.
That’s funny, Kanuka: I read about a third of the first Elena Ferrante novel. I was enjoying it a lot and then suddenly I’d just had enough. She packs so much astute observation into each page. I found I couldn’t go on at that level of intensity and felt I just didn’t need to know anything more about these two characters.
I have watched half of The Lost Daughter. I have not been able to get myself to watch the second half.
I think (I know?) I have some deep unresolved issues about Greece that I need to close out.
I agree you should get some yellow shoes – fun and cheerful 🙂
Ooooh, I have some yellow shoes, and I don’t wear them often enough. They are very summery. They look great with a green linen dress though.
You should get some brightly colored shoes! I have a red pair that I don’t wear that often but have never regretted buying.
So glad you are feeling wonderful! Celebrate with a bright pair of shoes!
I’m wearing African Leather today and I think I need more leather scents. Is the Carner Barcelona one nice?
Carner Barcelona Cuirs? Yes, I remember liking it.
Happy to recommend more if you tell me what type of leather scent you like.
I’m wearing Etro Shaal Nur today, mainly because someone mentioned it in these pages recently and I thought “I should get that out.” I wore it yesterday too and liked it so much I went for a repeat. It’s lovely–It’s a bit “sour” at first but then becomes such a soft and gentle scent. I have it in a rollerball format. We are having a nice winter day with brilliant sunshine and blue skies. I would love to go out and just meander around some shops, but sadly, the Omicron Wave is too forbidding. But later on I may go eat a late lunch at some restaurant where I can dine out on the patio (it’s in the 70’s here today).
Shaal Nur has vetiver, and I often find that natural vetivers smell like pickles to me for a few seconds at first.
Yes, I really want to do some shopping (mostly looking), but I’m trying to stay away from Omicron, too.
Robin, yesterday I opened the package with the rabbit wonder globe. It is sooooo beautiful and the gold specks twirl in the water for a long time upon shaking the snowglobe. Plus I own a piece that had been used as a picture on this blog!! My daughter will love it when She is older.
Oh how cool, I’m so glad the purchase worked out!
Covet today, because i have not worn it for some time. Now relaxing in front of the tv with a french crime series, thats really funny plus a nice glass of wine.
Covet is so good!
As mentioned yesterday, I’m continuing wearing Alamut to give it more chances. Seems like a good choice as I see the pretty snow falling outside. We never got to see much of the snow falling in NYC, so it’s nice having big windows to watch.
We are hoping to drive down to Green Bay tomorrow after I get my drivers license handled. Expecting roads to be clear. Will stop by Ulta to return something and get my Costco membership cards. Wish they’d ship the tires I ordered….
Oy! Good luck with the driver’s license.
I’m not getting any closer to Very Peri today, wearing POAL. I really wanted a “big” perfume today, and this is hitting the spot. It smells amazing in the colder weather.
POAL *is* big — I sometimes do the spray-the-air-and-then-walk-into-it method. Lovely stuff, though!
This is what I do with all my perfumes – hence the 8 sprays.
Wait, *that’s* how you do the eight sprays? I always imagined it was four directly on each arm. 🙂 I don’t know why I thought that.
I always thought that, too! Or, at least, eight direct hits to your person. 😀
You smell wonderful!
POAL should have come in dauber bottles!
I agree! I always spray with some trepidation.
I agree!
You smell wonderful!
POAL is big and beautiful!
A few dabs of Shalimar Parfum and a large cup of rooibos tea.
Perfect.
Hi all!
A very grey and rainy day today! Am in Champagne Toast & Sunshine Mimosa body spray combo for a dose of sunshine.
I love Sunshine Mimosa and use the scrub for an evening bath and follow with the lotion. Last night I tried A Million Wishes. I really liked that one too.
Veri Peri didn’t appeal to me as a paint colour, but I love that nail polish! I still can’t think of a perfume that goes with the colour, though.
I haven’t decided yet on a perfume for the day, but I can still smell last night’s Trayee on my clothes.
Our run of hot weather is over, and it’s cool and damp today. That removes the excuse for the lazyness of the last few days, and I need to do a bit of tidying around the house.
That combination of periwinkle and cold metallic is wonderful!
It looks like I’m not alone in choosing a rose perfume today. I finished off the oily dregs of my Floris A Rose For… spray sample. I’m not a huge rose fan, but this is a very nice perfume if rose, incense, and amber.
Speaking of finishing off samples, I meant to post my 2021 Perfume Empties totals yesterday but forgot. Last year I used up 50 samples and 27 decants, travel sprays, and minis. I finished one full size bottle albeit by using it as room spray. I’m pretty pleased with this progress overall, even though I finished off more last year.
And in hair news, I got another wonderful haircut at home from my partner over the weekend! My hair grows really fast, and I think he cut off 6-8 inches. It’s still past my shoulders but a much more manageable length.
You smell great! Rose is perfect for this classic gray, wet day.
And I’m so impressed by your partner’s hair cutting skills. It turns out I was more impressed by my own haircutting skills than Mr. allo was since he rushed back to the “other woman” who cuts his hair when lockdown was over.
Thank you, and I agree this incense rose was perfect for another rainy day. Btw I’m getting kind of desperate for a day where it’s clear for a walk between 4:30-6:30 p.m.!
Ha, too funny of Mr. Allo.
A wonderful haircut is a great way to start the new year! And congratulations on your progress finishing samples, too.
Thank you!
Thanks for the reminder about the empties! I need to do the count and post tomorrow.
Looking forward to your report!
Oh yay! Whatever you would have spent for a haircut should go towards your next perfume purchase.
I can get behind that!
Yay for a haircut! I’m getting close to needing one, but am thinking I might put it off due to Omicron. Do NOT want that!!
I feel you there. I am so lucky to get mine cut at home right now.
I started the day in 5o clock of Gingembre, of which I have a big bottle from a couple of swapmeets ago – it’s only been a little over 2 hours, and I can’t really smell it that much anymore. More purple than periwinkle, at any rate!
That periwinkle color is hard to scent.
Joining the other rose wearers in ELDO Eau de Protection.
One of my favorites. You smell wonderful!
Thank you!
I just received mine recently. I am really enjoying it! Good choice.
I came across this article in which Corinne Bailey Rae recommends Le Labo Jasmine 17 Liquid Balm:
https://nymag.com/strategist/article/corinne-bailey-rae-favorite-things.html
Tiny size, but $96!
Ack. Luckily I did not love that one anyway.
SOTD is JM Orange Blossom Cream with Blackberry and Bay Cologne. Nice combination.
That does sound nice!
I also wore Rose and Incense today – it sort of warmed up to 34 degrees today, which felt like a relief. Annoying pressures at work, my coworker told me was being crabby instead of my usual cheerful self. I thought to myself, “You haven’t see crabby yet, my dear!” But she has many pressures and stresses in her personal life that I do not, so I was shamed into saying “Lack of sleep.” Which is true because my phone rang at 2AM with spam from Australia. The phone companies could stop that, but clearly the spammers pay them money to let them hassle us at all hours. Ugh. There, crabby as accused. LOL. But I smell very pretty….
Besides the pretty perfume, perhaps there is also the consolation that your coworker didn’t say, “You’re being even crabbier than usual”…?
I killed our land line because of that. At least I can set an iPhone to “Do Not Disturb” and not get those insane calls.
My NY goal of using up decants has begun, as today I spritzed on some Cuir de Lancome. I also had a look at the rest of the perfume trays to see what might go with periwinkle blue and have only come up with Bulgari’s Parfumee Au the Bleu.
Cuir de Lancome is a lovely leather.
Joining the chorus of people who love that nail polish! I might have something similar to it from OPI. though.
Yucky weather today. Means I had a great excuse to stay indoors and enjoy some of the meatloaf I made yesterday before tackling a bit of cleaning.
SOTD = Jasmin de Pays parfum, from the Sample Stash, and one of you wonderful NSTers. Not a match for Very Peri, however. Maybe an oddball violet perfume would be?
Yes on the oddball Violet perfume!
I have been cleaning as well but with my goals set more reasonably based on amount of time I have. So far so good!
Today’s cleaning was stuff I had procrastinated, so it was definitely time!
Oh I know all about Procrastination!
BTW, did you hear about the new bath bomb LUSH has called Unicorn Poop? I laughed and thought of you.
Just now! I usually skip the corner bath bomb section but will look for it next time.
Are you getting snow?
Had a touch of freezing rain this morning before the temps warmed up enough for regular winter rain. Yuck!
The snow is supposed to show up on Friday. I’ll believe it when I see it, though.
Also love the nail polish! I’d use it for a pedicure, if I got pedicures, that is.
It’s a gorgeous day out there, 75 degrees and a cloudless sky. I’m in JHAG White Spirit which is too BWF for me and Berdoues Arz El-Rab, which is a nice warm weather woody spicy thing.
I love reading the quarterly damage poll. Am I the only one who watches the comment count, waiting for a big enough jump in number, so I have a chunk of comments to read? ?
Ha! I watch the comment count too. I’m always excited to click and read the new one’s.
Ahh, kindred spirit! I’ve read some of the polls from before I discovered NST. Fun stuff.
That JHAG sounds new…
I thought it was too, but fragrantica says it announced in 2015. ??♀️
Too many perfumes to keep track of!
The JHAG sounds like something I would like. Love the BWFs.
There are a couple of them I can wear, but not many.
Can I use my tea to be CP-compliant? I’m still trying to use up my Mariage Frères Advent calendar (which came late), and this afternoon’s tea was London in Love, a blue tea.
I’m in ELdO Fat Electrician today, which I nabbed last month and just picked up at my sister’s. I don’t often buy things unsniffed, but I’m happy with this one. It’s not very blue, though!
I do like that nail polish…hmm.
How did you like the MF advent calendar? I’m thinking of doing that one next December.
I liked it a lot. So did my kid — she was fascinated by all the blue teas and has been trying to steal them from me. It seems like a good overview of their teas — I didn’t know that much about them before. It’s also a good excuse to take a break each afternoon! 🙂
SOTD = Masque Milano L’Attesa
With the CP because iris!

In other news, I probably shouldn’t be obsessed but I am somewhat anxious about running my errands during the weekend. I will double mask, which I did before in 2020, but which I had largely abandoned after I got my vaxx (April 2021) for a few months until July / August when I was single masking. In any case, while milder (according to the news), it is more transmissible and also transmits via air so cloth masks are virtually useless. The trick is a “tight fit”.
In more COVID news, I ordered an at home test pack that my employer provides for free. Each pack contains 20 tests. It will take 2 weeks to get here. I suppose it is better to just have them on hand, just in case.
A perfect Owl match with the perfume bottle and table cloth!
That’s awesome your employer provides tests.
Yes! Although I heard from another person who ordered last week that there’s a delay. I haven’t received that notification yet.
I *do* have a tight fit when I double-mask, so I don’t have misgivings about that. It’s disconcerting seeing so many people in my area not wearing masks at all.
Propers to your employer for providing those tests!
I agree with being angry that a good number of people are not wearing masks!
Tests are showing the N95 masks to be very effective against the new variant, if you prefer that to doubling up on the cloth masks. Apparently there are phony N95 out there (sigh), but the CDC has a running list of legit brands & model numbers (should be the first hit if you google: “CDC Niosh approved N95 list”). [Taking off my EHS hat now]
Thanks for the info. I am not planning on double masking with cloth masks only. My plan is to use a KN95 under a cloth mask to tighten the fit. I also have a supply of N95 which I haven’t worn so if I choose to use that, I will have to practice!
I’m back to N95 masks for grocery shopping and picking up the mail, which are the only two indoors-with-strangers things I have to do at this point. You smell *wonderful* in your L’Attesa! It’s one of my all-time favorite irises.
Thank you!
Late again! I’m digging Very Peri since periwinkle is one on my favorite colors. It’s an honest and angelic hue, almost royal but not quite. Reminds me of these roadside flowers I found in Montana a few years ago:
https://www.instagram.com/p/CYXgBG6PIj7tIdDTaHhMa60VKlw1Fn79-LJmug0/?utm_medium=copy_link
SOTD is a small dribble of the remainder of Felanilla- dark brown and unctuous, it doesn’t even spray anymore. I just open the decant bottle and dribble a bit. Rich, dark, heady, and sweet in a manly way. Yum!
Your aged Felanilla sounds wonderful Deva!
Happy new year fragrant friends! I tried to stay off my computer during my holiday break and that definitely helped me decompress, but I missed all of you.
CP compliant today in CdG Floriental, which is mostly a lively incense on me, but I also get some plum and cinnamon sticks in the mix.
A funny story from Christmas Eve. I wore Spell 25 because I wanted to smell Christmas-tree-in the -forest-ish. I guess I was a bit heavy handed with it because 5 minutes into our 45-minute car ride to my in-laws’ house, Mr. Vee said “I can’t deal with your perfume — I can literally taste it in the air.” So we rolled down the windows and he wore an N95 mask for the rest of the ride. Oops!
Hey Vee, welcome back!
Hilarious holiday excess! Welcome back!
Good to see you back, Vee! Sometimes a digital detox is exactly what you need.
Hello Vee!! Happy new year to you!
Cracking up at Mr. Vee’s comment and his use of an N95 mask! Welcome back, and I’m glad you gave yourself a computer break — it can be so refreshing to unplug for a bit.
Ha! Did you actually mean Spell 125 because of it’s a different perfume, I need to know about it! ?
🙂 I meant 125! (tho I could see someone calling a knock-off call Spell 25)
My local weather people are in their meteorological glory right now, because their winter storm forecast came true! Ugh… It’s so bad out! At 6 o’clock we had over 7 inches of blowing snow and the warning has been extended until Friday morning. I am thanking God that I am safe at home with my family and that I bought 2 gallons of milk yesterday along with a GIANT chocolate chip cookie.
My sotd is No.5 L’eau. All I want to wear this week is warm weather perfume. L’eau works in all seasons though.
LOL on the two gallons of milk and giant cookie. 🙂 Enjoy being snuggled up at home watching the snow!
Wow! 7 inches of blowing snow?!? I hope that no one is on those roads! And very happy to hear that you are safe at home.
Good call on that giant cookie! ?
Love L’eau anytime.
Yuck on the weather! I’m glad you get to cozy up at home, and milk with a giant cookie sounds like just the thing. Stay safe!
You do smell great, lillyjo! A giant cookie sounds perfect! Glad you made it home safely.
Today I am wearing Jul et Mad Amour de Palazzo again. Balsamic-oriental with spices tempered down by the.most subtle yet creamy cristal base. Love it.
*crystal
Chiming in a day later but yesterday I wore 4160 Tuesdays New York ’55, applied with a generous hand along Crabtree & Evelyn’s almond lotion underneath it.
What did you think of it? I got a freebie sample!
