Happy Holidays (and if you're reading this on Thursday, happy Festivus for the Rest of Us)! We'll be back on Monday.
In the meantime, feel free to talk about whatever you like: what perfume you’re wearing today, what you're cooking (or eating) over the holidays, anything at all.
Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Back in Iris Cendre on this chilly morning–couldn’t wear it in warmer months, but it’s hitting the spot today.
Oh, that video never gets old, thanks galbanumgirl!
Love that video!
Thanks for the video, Galbanumgal and Happy Holidays to you!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays and all of those things to you, Robin, and everyone here.
It’s brutishly cold here (eastern Canada, what do you expect) so I’m in a cocoon, or more accurately YR Neonatura Cocoon, cocoa powder with a dash of salt and vanilla and patchouli, very simple and absolutely perfect.
And to you pyramus!!
The sun is shining here and I don’t have to go outside til later, so am ignoring the cold (we are expecting 38F, you probably have it worse) for now. We have just seasoned & set up tomorrow night’s beef roast and I am vacuuming & finishing off other boring pre-holiday chores. Wearing a little dab of Theorema 🙂
Merry Christmas! Stay warm. We’re expecting close to 70F for Christmas here in GA. That’s just not right.
I would be seriously thrilled with a 70F Christmas.
(Actually it does look like MD, where I am right now, will get up to 64 on Christmas, which I am thrilled about, since it’s currently an almost literally frigid 33F.)
Merry Christmas pyramus! The weatherman says a high of 84 for Christmas day, so I’d love to send you 20 degrees! Oh, and your perfume sounds lovely.
I totally agree – YR Cocoon, absolutely perfect! One of the best scents they ever made. Along with Nature Millenaire, my favorite!
I’m having an extremely quiet day at work!
Last night, all was better again, and in a Festivus Miracle, Tween and I had a lovely, peaceful morning. I am chalking this up to a combo of tween and perimenopausal hormones, compounded by covid angst. Thanks to all for your good suggestions, and I will look into them.
Wearing Malabah by Penhaligon’s today. I’ve tried it in the past, and felt kind of ‘meh’ about it, but on a cold day, it’s like, “where have you been all my life?” I will easily make it through my 5mL this winter!
Oh, so glad for the peaceful morning missionista! Maybe skip the airing of the grievances this year 🙂
I consider them already aired! 🙂
?
Glad you’ve had some peace, and I feel you on the tween-ing. The advent calendar has been the flash point in our house lately. On Sunday Ockeghem Tween got a $5 gift card to a bookstore, and promptly stomped around the house declaring it “worthless trash” that she was going to throw out…until I told her I was taking it down to the bookstore that morning and giving it to someone who would use it. Suddenly it was no longer worthless. 🙂 Then yesterday the piece of chocolate she got was “too thick.” (What?) Why do I make her an advent calendar every year? I am asking myself that.
Deep breaths. They’ll be normal again someday, right?
What is “too thick” chocolate? Those words don’t even make sense! All chocolate is good chocolate. And I’m super impressed that you made the advent calendar.
In our house the hysterical screaming and crying can be anything from “I don’t know what 8 x 7 is” (she totally does) to us wanting her to throw out candy wrappers in the garbage, as opposed to putting them somewhere in her room. We’re monsters!
I am assured that 7th grade is the worst (both my mom and Mr Missionista’s mom said so unhesitatingly when we asked), so I’m hoping it will get better.
I’m very much enjoying all these stories of nutty kids. (Glad I never was one.)
Yup — Grade 7 is where we are, and we have the same tears about math. I do hope it will be better after this.
The advent calendar is a bit easier as I have an old German one that is little bags on a rope. Just have to fill the bags, which apparently I have not done to tween standards.
To be fair on the chocolate, Ockeghem Tween has braces. It was a chocolate snowflake that was half an inch thick or so. I think she could manage it, but everything is an occasion for DRAMA!
As the mother of 3 now adult girls, grade 7 is the year I wanted to put them all in a box that said “Don’t open until NEXT Christmas.
“Too thick chocolate?” Sorry. That does not compute.
I know, right? Gimme a paring knife and that chocolate bar will be juuust right.
Kudos for you re. Advent calendar. Even though I had not done a self made one for years, I was convinced that I made one for the girls when they were small at least once. Nope. They both assured me that I had never made them an advent calendar, and I must have been reliving memories of my own childhood… So you’re a better parent than I am right there!
I’m in Herbae, because although I pulled a mini of Cuir Cannage from my mini box, I put it, unprotected on my bed, and low and behold, my cat Midnight (probably) must have been playing with it, and I couldn’t find it. I really like Herbae though, so that’s fine. Except now I really want to find my Cuir Cannage.
You will find it 5 years from now in some weird place, right?
Your cat has excellent taste!
Chiming in here, because ChezMossy welcome a kitten last July. He’s at 8 months, and is the first of our three cats who even sniffs at perfumes! And he has recoiled at any on my skin, but thoroughly sniff, sniff, sniffs bottles and samples! So I am keeping things out of reach…here’s hoping Midnight has not carried CC too far!
Otto Mi Gato used to love a particular perfume when it was sprayed on his Da Bird toy — it was Shisha, by Ava Luxe. The effect was a bit like catnip. He’d get very excited about chasing the toy, then later would roll around, languidly batting at it once in a while.
I’m wearing a tiny spray of Musc Ravageur (yes, at work!) because one of my sisters gave me a travel spray a few christmases ago. I don’t wear it often because it’s at least a full day commitment, but it is so good.
Happy holidays to everyone, and thank you, Robin, for this fragrant place!
You smell wonderful!
You smell great and happy holidays to you!
I often think the World needs a “Take Your Edgy Perfume to Work Day.” But yes, I get it about our friends with allergies…
A Christmas skit from SCTV featuring Martin Short
https://youtu.be/wSOWqSwam8w
This reminds me of my daughter every Christmas Eve. Lol
I am heading to work and will be back in Angel Muse for a cold snowy day. Tomorrow though it’s going to rain.
Oops, changed my mind. I am wearing Cafe Tuberosa. It called my name at the last second.
Oh that video was too funny! You smell wonderful – I went from a Cafe Tuberosa travel spray to a FB. And it is perfect for Christmas – wishing a Merry one to you and yours.
I have always loved Martin Short. He’s so funny!
Merry Christmas!
Hope work is peaceful lillyjo!
Thanks Robin!
Merry Christmas to you and yours, Lillijo! I enjoyed the video ?
Thank you! Merry Christmas!
Re: your video. LOL! That was my Mom!
Merry Christmas to you and yours lillyjo!
Merry Christmas Jalapeno!
Great skit! I love SCTV! The part where his parents yell at him is the best. 😀
So many great comedians came out of SCTV!
Hi NST ?
Craving roses today so I’m wearing a spritz of Nahema, ahhhh.
Yesterday I guided my husband through making meatloaf (delicious) and today I’m talking him into making a cheese ball that I’m hungry for, so I can take a little to my mom (and scarf down the rest.)
You smell great! Loooove nahema.
Go Mr. Ringthing! Meatloaf is in my top 10 list of favorite foods.
Waaay back in the day, I worked in a sandwich shop, and we made a fantastic meatloaf sandwich. Kinda like the lasagne recipe on the Barilla box, the meatloaf itself was nothing fancy, but it made for a delicious sammich on toasted, extra sour sourdough bread.
Yum. Meatloaf sandwiches are one of the main reasons I miss bread. Also, ham, cornichon and butter sandwiches. Ok, let’s drop the subject, ha 😉
That sounds fantastic! Now I need to make one.
I like that sort of transparent overlay — your mum gets sufficient cheese ball, you get a lot of cheese ball, and Mr. ringthing gets to do a good deed….
Yup it was a good lunch and yes my daughter’s development is right on. Thanks Robin!!
Merry Christmas, Ringthing – you are have a wonderfully fragrant ANNND delicious evening.
A tasty meatloaf has been one of my comfort food discoveries of this fall!
Add mashed potatoes and it’s the ultimate comfort food.
Very happiest of holidays to you, Robin, and to everyone else! Littles and I just ate our weight in French toast made with challah and topped with the JOTD — plum/pear/star anise — as well as a panoply of jams from previous days, with the standouts being cherry/hibiscus, peach/jasmine, and strawberry/linden. Bonne Maman really hit it out of the park with the advent calendar this year!
Heading out for a rainy morning walk-off-our-breakfast in one of our nearby State Parks, and then we’ll be making paper snowflakes for the window and meringue mushrooms for tomorrow’s bûche de Noël (chocolate sponge and chestnut cream with milk chocolate ganache). Wearing Eau Parfumée aux Thé Vert for the calm before the baking-wrapping-toasting-devouring storm.
Wow, sounds like they did…I always forget to buy that calendar! Your whole day sounds wonderful Isabella.
I think I first heard about it via one of your Lemming posts!
Ha, figures — I post it, then I forget all about it until months later.
I love picturing the cozy scene of you and Littles eating french toast, and with Challah no less. Yum!
And thank you for the Bonne Maman advent calendar reminder. Better late than never, I just bought one for Mr. Allo because he’s a HUGE jam lover and will greatly enjoy a jammy January 🙂
Maybe we should each buy an advent calendar to open in June for half-Christmas although I would worry about food freshness if it involved food.
Which is the reason to make all food in the advent calendar chocolate, right? 🙂
I would never admit to eating chocolate past its stated expiration date ??
Chocolate has an expiration date??!
“Half-Christmas” I love it! And Advent Calendars stored in a cool, dark place….
I think hajusuuri also invented the half birthday!
I bought five consumable advent calendars this year–the l’Occitane premium calendar, the Yves Rocher, Godiva, Keurig, and a chocolate calendar from Aldi–and I was severely tempted to open one of them in November. I remember that it was Nov 6, and I though to myself that since the advent calendar had 24 items, if I started it the next day, it would just take me through November, in time to start the rest of them on Dec 1. I also thought about saving at least one of them for January, to have something fun for after Christmas. Maybe next year I will do that.
That sounds like an awesomely wonderful day…
It’s been good! We got very soggy out in the woods and Littles catalogued 14 different species of mushrooms along the way, which was a nice tie-in to the meringue mushroom project.
Wow! Mushrooms are so interesting. I just received a gift of quantities of five or six different dried dye mushrooms. They are going to be stored far away from all food so they do not get mixed up with food mushrooms! I cannot wait to experiment with them — that will be a summer project.
Oh, fun! My aunt has been working with natural dyes for a while now, but she’s never mentioned mushrooms as a dye source — I’ll have to ask her if she’s tried any. Mushrooms are fascinating!
I am so impressed that he can identify that many varieties of mushrooms at such a young age!
You always devise wonderful activities for your little one.
I try! And, after an inevitable initial show of “why-can’t-I-just-lie-on-the-floor-in-my-pajamas-with-a-Matchbox-car?” resistance, he generally winds up agreeing. 🙂
Oooooooooooooooh, a peach/jasmine jam sounds incredible! ?
That one was my favorite. Still hoarding a wee bit in the fridge…
BTW, I saw your late night last night post about “Littles and the Champagne” earlier tonight. I got a good laugh out of what I figured was his answer! More bubbles, right? ??
Mama better haul out her wallet!
Ha! Let the good times roll, indeed!
Mais yeah!
BTW, I saw your late night last night post about “Littles and the Champagne” earlier tonight. I got a good laugh out of what I figured was his answer! More bubbles, right? ??
Sounds like a wonderful day for the two of you. I envy you on the meringue mushrooms and Bûche de Noël — I thought about it this year, and then I just didn’t have the time / energy. I also love the tie-in to the mushroom cataloguing. Have a very merry Christmas with Littles!
This was the first year I’d had energy for a bûche de Nöel since before he was born — I’m counting that as progress. 🙂 Very merry Christmas to you, too!
Oh wow, I need to order that Bonne Maman calendar next year! I love their jam.
Happy holidays all!
Sotd is Ambre Sultan. Probably not a word people would use to describe it but I think it’s “delicious” haha.
I would be interested to know what fabulous dish you all serve on your table other than the usual turkey.
On my table you will find mashed potatoes, candied carrots, turkey, mum’s meatballs, creamed spinach, roasted veggies. Dessert is cheesecake and chocolate roulade.
We do our big meal on Xmas Eve instead of Xmas, and we do a rib roast. There will be mashed potato, and I think my mom made some sort of chocolate cake. Often there is cranberry but not this year because I find it addictive. By the end of the day I will figure out veg.
Usually Christmas night is casual / leftovers or something like chili, but this year I have a fresh duck and we’ll see how that goes…we have a history of duck disasters in our house, and so I will either get a delicious duck or another funny story.
Oh no, a history of duck disasters! (Empathy but also laughing; excuse me). I’ve never wrassled with a whole duck but I like making David Tanis’s double duck breast roast (two nicely seasoned breasts tied together into a little roastlet) with baked figs and grilled sweet pepper and olive salad in the fall. Haven’t tried it on the household’s picky eater yet, though…
Best of luck with your duck!
That double duck breast roast sounds great!
It’s so good — plus, you get a bunch of equally nicely seasoned rendered duck fat out of the deal that you can store in the freezer and use to turn things like potatoes into Small Acts of God.
2nd that, it really does!
We are having duck (breasts only, not whole) for Christmas dinner. It is what I will always order if it is on a restaurant menu, but since we never dine out these days, I haven’t had any in a long time. I will make Julia Child’s zucchini boats with parsnip purée and we will have a salad and maybe also steamed broccoli. I’ll try to pipe the purée into the boats if I can figure out the parchment-paper piping bag (I have disposable ones for icing that will probably melt if I put anything hot through them).
https://foodgawker.com/post/2009/05/28/26893/
I’d love to hear a couple of your ducksaster stories, Robin! We usually do a whole duck roast for occasions when others do turkey, and it’s so nice and dark and fatty that it always turns out great for us–easier than any of the leaner birds. So I’m curious to hear what goes wrong! (TOO fatty, perhaps? Drippings catching on fire?)
Two best:
#1, first time my husband (the designated roast chicken maker in my house, so he should have known better) made a duck, he roasted it on rack in baking pan in oven. Took it out while I was in kitchen looking on, it looked excellent, he pivoted to put it on the counter, duck slid off rack onto floor, continued to slide across the tile floor, hit wall opposite, out popped the plastic bag holding the innards. He looked at me completely deadpan and said “you’re not going to eat that are you”. We both laughed so hard we were crying.
#2 — rotisserie duck on grill, which we have done before successfully, with pan underneath to catch the fat, he got distracted with a phone call, went out, opened grill (I happened to be standing near window so saw whole thing), wall of flame shot up a good 3 or 4 feet right in front of his face. I was already starting to call 911 because I thought for sure he’d have caught on fire or burned off the front of his face, but no, he just singed off the front of his hair and nothing else serious. Duck pitch black but we did get enough meat to make a nice salad from underneath, good smoked flavor actually. The fat was ruined though, and getting a good container of fat is half the point.
I have a couple more stories…I figure one of us must have been mean to a duck in a prior life and now we have some kind of bad duck karma.
These are great, Robin; thank you for sharing!
(One might argue that cooking a duck is also being mean to a duck, in your current life.)
Bad Duck Karma–that’s the name of my 70’s garage band!
LOL-ing at your duck disasters. We had a duck success last night. My word, it was AMAZING.
Ambre Sultan absolutely is delicious! It’s a sumptuous feast. Perfect for Christmas dinners and all sorts of other festivities.
yep, yep, delicious it is!
We’ve never had a certain traditional Christmas dinner, either when I was growing up or now that I’m the ostensible grown-up, but it’s always been an excuse to get out the Good Wine and the Good China and make something special. This year we’re having homemade pasta and meatballs, which sounds pedestrian but they’re the Good Meatballs.
Ah, the good meatballs! That sounds wonderful then. Also anything with home made pasta has to be wonderful, right?
Thumbs up for the Good Wine and the Good China. Enjoy!
See my post below for Christmas Eve eats. Tomorrow we’ll be having Rock Cornish hens on the grill, wild rice and the Roasted Brussels Sprouts/Maple Butternut Squash salad a wonderful NST’er posted at Thanksgiving (I forgot who but thank you so much?)
Woke up this morning and felt civet-minded.
Civic-minded: Having, showing, or actively carrying out one’s concern for the scent, sillage, and condition of one’s fragrance community; perfume-spirited.
In Civet of course.
Brilliant!
Love this, and you smell great!
I wish you could hear and see me making a clawing gesture accompanied by a big cat growl. You smell fabulous!
Excellent.
?
Brilliant!
And so con-civet-rate of you!
?
Grrrrowl! Merry Christmas!
I love that NST is such a civet-alized place! Merry Christmas, Oakland Fresca!
I know, the civet-lity around here is reliably heartwarming!
civetlity! (snort! well done!)
???! Too awesome!
Hello and Happy Holidays to You all!!
I had a wellness checkup with my daughter at Her doctors today and now we are waiting on a friend who will be taking us to lunch.
Today I wanted to wear something subtle enough but not too simple. Feminine and floral enough. Creed 2000 Fleurs hit the spot perfectly. My personal saying is: “You can never go wrong with Frederic Malle or Creed”. Maybe similar to how a lot of people feel about Chanel.
Hope the checkup goes well majokkobiachan, and have fun at lunch!
Happy Holidays to you, M, and yay for lunches with family and friends!
Was perusing my choices and landed on Mitsouko as the snow falls outside. Sometime later I will reheat my lamb ragu leftovers from dinner out last night.
Wish I’d remembered to buy those bags of deer apples to throw in our backyard so we make sure to keep getting visits from the deer family that was stopping by for pumpkins. But…we can pick some up tomorrow, so hopefully they’ll visit on Christmas.
Hope everyone has a pleasant day.
I don’t know what deer apples are! But we have a terribly old and terribly tall apple tree that bears horrid sour and hard little apples full of worms, and we don’t pick them so the deer and other critters eat them…but they’re long gone. Maybe those are deer apples 🙂
I think they’re just misshapen apples or something that aren’t good enough to sell in markets. You can buy them via honor system by side of the road.
Ah, that makes sense!
Snow and deer on Christmas – what a lovely picture I’m imagining!
How wonderful to have visits from a deer family.
This gardener would beg to differ.
And for anyone needing a moment of zen, here you go. I don’t know how to add music…

Wow. That could be used as a calming app.
That’s mesmerizingly beautiful.
Happy Christmas to NST family. Love you all a bunch!
First day off work today and I’m not returning to the office until 10/01. Yay!

Hello there! Happy Holidays johanob! You’ve been on my mind lately, and I’ve wondered how you’ve been/ how things are going?
Good to ‘see’ you here! Happy holidays to you, and may you have a quiet weekend.
Nice to see you Johanò, happy holidays!
In Chanel Coromandel EdT.
Half day of work today,
so I am leaving soon to run my last errands before Christmas Eve. We will be working from home next week, which I welcome eagerly!
Our family Christmas dinner has been canceled. My nephew’s girlfriend tested positive for Covid last night, so since my nephew and older sister were exposed, they are isolating now and waiting for the result of their tests. Also, one of my baby twin nieces woke up this morning with a runny nose and sneezing, so my youngest sister doesn’t want to risk a family gathering that may not end up well, especially for my very old mother. We may reschedule the dinner for New Year’s Eve, but not so sure yet. We still have until January 6th (Epiphany) to exchange presents and celebrate. Health comes first. We will all have a quiet holiday at home, watching tv and relaxing. No complaints from my side!
Happy Thursday, everyone!?
Rescheduling Christmas is not so bad…hope everyone is healthy soon! I have heard of an awful lot of people who have tested positive in the last week.
Thank you, Robin! Hopefully, next year, things will be better! I am so glad that we are teleworking next week. I am so tired and stressed again with the Covid situation that I plan to go out just to walk my dog and take my mother to doctors appointments. I need some quiet and peaceful time at home, even if I am working.
I’m sorry about the rescheduled dinner. Sounds like it’s for the best.
You smell perfect!
Thank you, Lillyjo! We are planning to meet virtually tomorrow and have our regular dinner together. We are okay with it. ?♀️
Glad all the PL67’s can take this in stride. At ChezMossy, we will be doing only telephone family gatherings Christmas Day. Actually getting together for our far-flung family never quite came up, though I think we all sort of thought about it. We are going to a small, local, all-vaccinated Christmas Eve dinner with a friend’s family, though.
That’s the best thing to do these days and less stressful!
Enjoy your dinner out with your friends!
You smell wonderful!
I’m sorry that your family is dealing with this and I hope those who haven’t tested positive don’t and those with Covid have a mild course.
Fingers crossed you can gather for the New Year and Epiphany and in the meantime, enjoy a cozy, relaxing holiday.
Thank you, Allo! Looking for a healthy and relaxing holiday weekend and wishing all test negative. Crossing fingers!
Oh, I’m sorry to hear that, but agree that caution is best right now. I hope everyone is better soon and no new cases are detected, so your family can have a festive get-together.
Thank you, Calypso!
As disappointing as it is, I am so relieved that you found out today, instead of AFTER you’d all gotten together. Have a lovely, quiet, peaceful celebration!
I agree, Missionista! We are so thankful that we found out today; otherwise, it would have been a disaster. Looking forward to a quiet and healthy weekend!
Have a lovely peaceful day!
Thank you, Kanuka!
Absolutely agree, Epiphany and galette des rois is a big thing in France where I was born.
That’s what we think that meeting for Epiphany is a better idea and gives everybody enough time to make sure we are all fine.
Oh boy! Better to find out before the get together! Have a Merry Christmas!
So true! We are so relieved about it! Merry Christmas to you, too, Hajusuuri!
You smell wonderful, PL67! I wore it yesterday, for the first time in many months, even though it’s one of my favorites.
Happy holidays to you and your family! Be well.
Thank you, Adanst! Happy Holidays to you, too! I don’t reach for Coromandel that often either, even though I love it. But it is always a delight to wear it!
I read a thing on twitter earlier today. ” I would rather miss you than grieve you.”
Stay safe is the best course, methinks. You smell great!
I totally agree with you, Apsara. We are all fine and thankful that we were able to postpone the gathering on time. We want to think that better and happier times are around the corner.
OMG. That is incredibly sobering.
Glad that you all found out BEFORE the dinner and not after! I’m also relieved that your family has decided to postpone.
Thank you, Jalapeno!
Oh, stressful and disappointing, but your change of plans is more than prudent. Hope everyone stays healthy or sails easily through any bouts of unhealth, and wishing you much warmth and cheer!
Thank you, Isabella!?
Have a wonderful, quiet Christmas, PL67!
Thank you, Tulipani! ?
Aww, sorry your family gathering was canceled, but hooray for quiet and relaxing!
Thank you, Koyel! Looking forward to it!
Everyone I know seems to be re-scheduling this week. Hope all of your family feel better soon and that a delayed family gathering is everything you wish!
Thank you, Jepster! Hopefully we will be able to meet at a better time. Wishing you a happy and healthy Holiday season!
You and your family are wise to reschedule. Wishing you restorative quiet and peace ?.
Thank you, Laila! ?
Happy holidays, everyone! I hope you all have some time to relax and enjoy some down time.
No SOTD yet. Officially I’m working today but let’s just say I’m taking a very relaxed approach and there’s no one around to notice. I have most of the gifts wrapped but just realized I have nothing for my spouse to open on Christmas morning (his gifts are at my sister’s in the US, where they cost significantly less), so I guess I’d better get something small today. Last year was kind of nice in that we didn’t have this problem; if it couldn’t be gotten in Canada, it wasn’t happening.
I am planning LOTS of down time and reading over the next few days. Glad you are taking the relaxed approach at work too!
Have a wonderful relaxing time off!
Happy holidays and safe travels to you!
Thanks, all! We will see how the travels go. I think extreme flexibility is going to be the order of the day. Just after I posted yesterday, my sister texted to say her whole family had been exposed to COVID by my niece’s friend, who came over to make gingerbread houses on Sunday _even though_ the girl’s parents knew she’d been exposed to COVID. Now she has COVID, go figure. (Who does this?) My sister and her family stood in line for three hours yesterday to get tested, and fortunately all are negative, but I’m going to wait another day to go to her house, just to be sure no one has any symptoms. We’re going on to visit quite elderly family after that, so I’m trying to play it as safe as possible.
And this morning I wake up to news of flights being cancelled left and right, so even if we go we may get stranded on the East Coast or in the Midwest. Good fun. All I can do is take a deep breath and prepare for an adventure. We can always drive home, right?
Good luck with your plans; it sure is crazy out there! Taking a deep breath and preparing for an adventure is a great attitude. For the not-so adventurous like me, tucking in and waiting awhile til things get better works equally well and helps avoid stress.
I’m in Day 2 of my Chanel week and wearing No. 22 parfum. I like it more than No. 5. No. 5 always makes me feel as if I should be wearing a fur coat instead of a sweater. No. 22 is just fine in a sweater. I have to go out to get some dates and heavy cream, having been seized by a craving for sticky toffee pudding, but otherwise it will be a quiet day.
Have a wonderful holiday, everyone! (Especially Robin, who works so hard all year to maintain such a great place.)
Oh, the minute I saw dates and heavy cream I knew I wanted what you were making!
You have a wonderful holiday too foxbins.
The Culinary Institute of America used to do (maybe still does) an apple pie contest where the winner got free tuition for their whole course of study, and one year the winner incorporated dates and heavy cream.
I’ve craved sticky toffee pudding more or less constantly since I first learned about it years and years and years ago, and yet somehow have never had it.
Sticky toffee pudding sounds pretty good, yum!
I saw a version of this on the Holiday Baking Championship!
Happy holidays Foxbins!
Hmm. I have not tried No 22 in decades, and cannot even really dredge up a scent memory. Given that I only came around to No 5 last winter, perhaps it’s time to give it another try.
I hope you got your cream – our Kroger had a hand-written sign on the empty case saying there would be no heavy cream until after Christmas. No doubt the Dairy Dept. workers did not want to face crabby and/or disappointed shoppers. 🙂 They had all the Reddi-Wip out in the aisle case, too.
RIP Joan Didion, who died today of Parkinson’s, 87.
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/12/23/books/joan-didion-dead.html
OMG! I have enjoyed her writing…
Yes. RIP Joan. My husband adored her.
Thanks for this, Robin. She wrote such elegant prose, the way only someone who has crafted words for a lifetime can. Her husband also died in the month of December.
BTW, I was too late to comment on the thread, but I agree with your mom that the woman who wrote the “My three dads” (paraphrasing here) piece came off as pompous and a little conceited. I thought it was just me that thought so!
Oh good, she will be glad to have confirmation!
Someone I loved very much died in 2004. The Year of Magical Thinking came out after he died and I listened to it over and over. Joan and I, we grieved together. In my car, on LA highways, just as she would have liked.
SOTD is Vanilla Incensee. Cold and rainy, just going to pop out for a few errands.
Hi everyone, good to see people’s notes and plans. I’m stopping by to tell Robin I’m wearing one I know she likes–Baume du Doge! A holiday pomander.
Yay, you smell perfect! Still can’t believe they discontinued it.
I’m in just a drop of Amber Narguile from much earlier and at an eye Dr appointment. Two more appointments for December and then I can relax for a bit. Booster on Tues.
*Ambre
I feel your appointment fatigue! Love your perfume…always makes me think of Waterdragon.
Yay for the booster!
You smell great, of course. Yay for booster and I hope you have minimal side effects.
Best wishes for getting thru your gauntlet of appointments!
Good luck with the appointments and booster!
Thanks, everyone. MD appointments are probably my least favorite thing and I seem to have had a lot in the last few years.
You smell wonderful. Hooray for almost the end of appointments!
Summers are always a bit rubbish down here; it’s currently 11C (51F) and gloomy but things might perk up for tomorrow. My son just texted that he will have Christmas dinner with us after all and, also, he wants to start moving back home today so can I go and help clear out his flat ( a student dump covered in mould for 6 months of the year). I think that if I sit tight for a few hours he might text back that he is having Christmas dinner at his girlfriends after all ( reverse after all x2) and can’t be bothered packing today ( he has until the 30th). Meanwhile, we still have champagne on the menu and something, something, broccoli.
Christmas Eve love to everyone at NST and thanks Robin for doing your bit for world peace and perfume this year! Wearing Breath of God because it might help.
I hope your son doesn’t change his mind again! Merry Christmas to you and your family. And you smell great in Breath of God!
Sometimes I wish I was in my 20s again, then I think – nah.
Hope you and your son have a wonderful Christmas wherever it happens 🙂
“20s again?” BIG NAH! But, Kanuka, I hope your boy does come to see you and share that champagne! Merry Christmas!
The only thing I miss about my 20’s are the size 7 jeans that I fit into!
And the dewiness of my complexion. And the glittering sense of possibility stretching far beyond the horizon. And the fact that I was able to somehow make ends meet while only working part time. And Amtrak hopping a half dozen times across the country, and sleeping on sandbars in Utah, and the ease of finding boyfriends. But would I go back? Only if I could bring my 20-years-later wisdom with me!
Lol! I am with you on it all!
Presenting a different viewpoint here–I liked my 20s! I’d be happy to go back to them! I just wish there were a way to tell myself to chill out while I redid them.
I did not dislike them at all. But from my current standpoint, the turmoil seems ludicrous — so yes, if I could tell myself to chill out!
And btw, still listening to your 12 days of Xmas so thank you again 🙂
Thank you, Robin, that is so sweet of you <3 I just posted my very last one. It was a fun project! I should do more recorded singing projects. The pandemic has put a complete halt to my vocal performance, but it’s nice to remember that there’s always the internet 🙂
I hope your medical appointments went well. Merry Christmas and may 2022 treat you kindly.
Merry Christmas, Kanuka and best wishes to you for 2022!
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas, Kanuka! ?
You smell great, reversals or not! Happy Christmas!
Merry Christmas and much love to you, amid all the muddle and uncertainty! At least there’s champagne…
Happy Holidays and Bell Ringing Jing-A-Linging to all. Wishing everyone a wonderful time with friends and family over the next couple of days! Stay safe!
I’m going big today in Kenzo l’Elephant! ?
Ringing my bells for you and T-Rex!
? ringing back at you!
You stay safe too Deva!
Thanks, you too!
I laughed at your post yesterday – “This is my complaining ON TOP of my usual complaining.” They will definitely miss your sass.
I like to be extra! ?
My sister works in healthcare and she has the same approach. I think it’s the only way you can handle it, sometimes. 😉
Go big, sister — and then go home!
Home is where you park it! ?
Happy holidays, Deva! Be well and safe travels to you!
Thank you, hope your holidays are spectacular, despite all the world’s craziness!
Happy Holidays to you and T-Rex, Deva! ?
We thank you! I hope yours is peaceful and calm. ?
Wow, that is going big! Totally impressed by your derring-do! Happy holidays!
Thanks! I love this one, and I’m not usually one for big scents. This is just so lovely and holiday-ish! Have a fabulous holiday!
Happy Holidays, Deva! Be safe, and be well.
You too! Sending our best wishes to you, the family and the kittahs! ?
Ring-jing-jing-a-ling to you! Let us know if you see any more of those giant slugs next year, LOL!
Hah, we’re headed to the desert so not likely! But that one WAS pretty impressive. ?
Happy and cozy holidays to you and yours, Deva!
Thank you, same to you and yours!
Happy holidays to you, Deva! You smell deliciously spicy!
Have a great holiday yourself! Cheers!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. The New Year’s wishes will come next week but if you are taking a social media break, Happy New Year! May you and yours be bright and safe!
SOTD = Jo Malone Cologne Intense Scarlet Poppy
Day 23 of perfume advent calendar! One more and we’re all done. Scarlet Poppy in its red bottle is perfect for the season and it smells wonderful: sweet, musky, powdery, nutty, vanillic with a hint of coconut.

In other news, I tried my hand in making air-fried calamari. I got all tentacles thinking that the tubes would get rubbery if I don’t cook it right. As usual, I used Wondra flour and half and half creamer instead of the more time consuming buttermilk, egg, milk and Panko breadcrumbs. I purposely did not season it with anything as I know I can add them afterwards. I air-fried 1/2 lbs. for 7 minutes at 400F and they came out perfectly. Who knows what’s next!
Christmas Day brunch will be at my younger sister’s place with the immediate family and my niece’s boyfriend. I’m bringing lox and crumb cake. Dinner will be at my older sister’s place and she’s making prime rib. I am bringing sweet potato tots (just need to air fry).
Beautyhabit has a an eGift card reward going on – no code needed. For every $50, you get a $10 holiday reward code. You will only get one code regardless of the amount you purchase; code must be used by March 31, 2022. I am always waiting for a 20% off code so this satisfies the itch!
Hi hajusuuri. The dietician’s requirements for snack bars are about 20 g protein, 10g or less of carbs and 10g or less of fat per 50g bar. So: no date bars, oats or cereal bars, anything not artificially sweetened. Very difficult to find actually and they don’t taste too great either.
Aaargh, sounds like cardboard! Can you make your own?
Ah, sweet potato tots sound like a great idea. I have never made them.
A good thing I found a bag at Whole Foods ?
HA, of course.
Merry Christmas Hajusuuri! Enjoy your time off and your family!
Thank you, adanst. And you as well. Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas!
You are becoming a cooking machine! I don’t know why, but for the longest time I thought you didn’t like sea food.
I say the air fryer was a game changer! I love seafood as long as there are no bones.
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas, and you may earn post-holiday sales Keurig and air fryer enabler badges! I like squid, but it is so often rubbery. If only my kitchen was bigger! 😀
We ate so much squid when I was a kid, because it was cheap cheap cheap — now it’s become quite posh, but it’s great stuff when handled right!
Merry Christmas! I live in a townhouse so space is not big either but I suppose the kitchen has an efficient set-up.
I keep looking for sweet potato tots at the same time everyone else does, since I never seem to find them! There were NO regular tater tots to be had last week at the grocery stores. Weird outages are just the way things are now…
Merry Christmas to you and your Family! ?
There was one bag left of the sweet potato tots. I am still working through the last of my regular potato tots.
Merry Christmas!
I’ll admit I paused at the thought of “lox-and-crumb cake,” but realized I was reading too quickly…
My family lived in New Orleans when I was very young and fried seafood was such a wonderful constant. I can barely open my Cajun cookbooks sometimes — “Take 10 pounds of oysters…” “Boil two dozen blue crabs…” Mon dieu.
Someone will probably come up with a lox and crumb cake – it’s the new fruitcake ?
I had the same lox-and-crumb issue 🙂 wondered if maybe it was a sort of savory crumb cake!
Hope all your lovely family plans are terrific. I am looking forward to Christmas Day with my sister and her family–just a ham and lots of homemade cookies!!!
Today I’m wearing Palo Santo, from Carner Barcelona. It’s a warm, woody vanilla — occasionally veers into gourmand territory, and then back into dry woods. Both of those aspects I like, so I’m all good on this blustery, wet day in the desert. No complaints about the weather, either — we are almost always in need of precipitation here in California.
Hooray for the welcome wet weather! I’m pretty sure I have the CB Palo Santo…I just have to find it!
I might have gotten the Palo Santo from you in a split, hajusuuri, so you probably do have a bottle somewhere!
That’s a great one, it’s not my usual kind of fragrance but I really like it. You smell great!
Hoping that the parched West gets plenty of precip for Xmas!
I always regret not using a New London gift card for that instead of what I got. I like the milkiness.
Merry Christmas to all. Wishing peace and calm to everybody dealing with children growing up and parents/parents in law growing old and frail. Commando today. Tomorrow will be my last day of call. My MIL was admitted to hospital today for the third time in 2 months. She is 90 years old. Old age is difficult and some people seem to be better at letting go.
Merry Christmas and best wishes to you and your family!
It’s hard when family gets ill during the holidays, wishing you peace too.
So sorry to hear about your MIL. The December 2021 /January 2022 issue of Readers’ Digest contains stories of others also having difficulty letting go.
Merry Christmas Amyitis!
Sorry to hear about your MIL, Amytis. Wishing you a peaceful Christmas! Sending hugs!’
I’m so sorry. My late MIL went through a period like that in her last year of life and it was so hard on my dear SIL, who lived nearby and had power of attorney for health care, etc. Also very hard on my beloved FIL, who just turned 90. I wish for you peace, and comfort for her.
Hugs Amyitis. That’s hard, dealing with your MIL being in hospital at this time of year. My Mom bounced in and out of hospitals during the last 3 months of her life, so I understand.
It is a difficult road to be on.
Hugs to you, and wishing you much peace and calm in return, and a very sweet holiday season.
Aw, sending you and your MIL positive energies and hugs ??
Sorry to hear about your MIL’s health issues 🙁 sending you Christmas love.
I’m sorry for the difficult time you and your family are experiencing.
Xmas will be away from family because of Covid restrictions on traveling abroad but Planning on delicious treats from the Turkish store to be purchased tomorrow morning and some cooking and baking.
Started the day in Outremer Vanille and tonight in vintage Habanita continuing the series of scents I should wear more often. It’s almost insanely powdery but the base notes are anything but with the leather and woods, so it’s perfectly well balanced. I am very fond of modern Habanita , very well done but this vintage is more complex, no doubt.
Mmmm, Turkish food treats! I envy your vintage Habanita. I do have the modern one in the bright red bottle.
Their olives are excellent. Oh, the Habanita red bottle looks so beautiful, I got the vintage because I saw a very good deal for it earlier this year, until then I was perfectly happy with the modern one.
Merry Christmas Aurora!
I decided to make an Apple Crisp on Christmas. One step closer to making a real pie! Lol
Baby steps! Try your hand at a galette, next, and you’ll be nearly there!
I don’t even know what it is! Lol
https://cucinanicolina.com/still-stuck-on-rhubarb/
Merry Christmas Lillyjo, apple crisp sounds delicious, good luck in the kitchen.
Merry Christmas Aurora!
Yesterday’s wind was enough to be annoying, but not cause any damage. Just blew some trash around the neighborhood. ?
Merry Christmas Jalapeno, glad the wind storm passed by with no lasting consequences.
I’ve never smelled Habanita in any of its iterations but you’re making it sound *very* appealing! I’m sorry you won’t be able to see your family, but hoping you have a wonderful holiday season regardless!
If you like powdery you would find it beautiful, it’s a legendary perfume, the modern one is very good too.
I ❤️ vintage Habanita, too!
Les Liturgies des Heures today, perfect churchy incense. A friend with severe Crohn’s disease just got a negative COVID test- it’s “just” the flu. Mixed blessing, I guess. Stay safe and well everyone, I have three days off and next week hold down the fort while everyone else on my team is off.
I am getting brain freeze on which way to go for Christmas Eve – churchy incense, festive spices, lush furry scents??
One of those will surely feel right when the time to apply comes! 😀 I vote for festive, furry spices with a hint of incense. Wait, is this vintage Nuit de Noël?
LOL; and, lemmings are furry – and mine are sniffing for something vintage from the hoard!
Good news on your friend’s negative COVID test.
Good news on the test, but I’m so sorry your friend is dealing with severe Crohn’s — such a difficult disease.
Wrappings again today. Am a little bit concerned because my eyes have been super-irritated today; hope it is not the perfume.
Ireland is a go (as of this writing). We fly out on 2 Jan., so Christmas and New Year’s will be blips for us (with the fun of going to urgent care on 12/31 for pre-departure COVID tests!) — we had already decided not to exchange gifts this year because of the likely trip. We are in somewhat frantic pack/tidy/prep mode, but the great news is that I heard back last night from the craftsperson I most wanted to connect with in Galway, and they are willing to work with my students! That’s all the Christmas gift I need.
Made this for Christmas dessert (it keeps) — it came out of the oven 45 minutes ago and of it tastes even close to the way it smells, we have a winner. Apologies for the likely paywall.
https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1017758-sticky-cranberry-gingerbread?smid=ck-recipe-iOS-share
Wow, that’s some excitement about your trip still being on! Best of luck with all your travel plans. ???
Glad all your preparation and plans are coming together for the Ireland trip! Merry Christmas!
I saw the picture briefly before the paywall took over, and it looked fantastic!
Fingers crossed, hope everything goes smoothly for your trip.
So far, so good. I used a six-cup Bundt pan with extra fluting, instead of the 9-inch round the recipe calls for, and the cake unmolded perfectly (thank you, Pam for Baking) and looks so pretty. It is now tightly wrapped and in the fridge. We will serve at room temp, with barely-sweetened whipped cream.
We watched The Courier (Cumberbatch) last night (on Prime, I think). It was excellent, HE was excellent, and I still get a thrill out of US/British films where the Russian-speaking characters are played by people who are clearly native speakers. The story does get dark and difficult to watch, so YMMV — not everyone’s cup of holiday tea, for sure.
Thanks, I will put that on my list for when I’m ready for dark and difficult!
Running late this afternoon! I went grocery shopping at Wegman’s around lunchtime today. The traffic was insane! But I made it back home without any dents in the truck, and most of the things on my list procured. I ended up walking to the small grocery store in my neighborhood to pick up the rest, since I didn’t want to drive any more at all.
SOTD = SSS incense Pure, for keeping my cool in crowded parking lots!
You smell wonderful!
Here, the traffic has been insane, as well as the crowds in the street and public transportation. I am so glad I arrived home early in the afternoon. I am now relaxing and planning to stay home for the rest of the weekend.
Thanks for the perfume compliment!
So glad you slipped through traffic safely – I hate the “bumper cars” parking lots. We are done for the season!
Thanks! I’m braving another parking lot tomorrow, but Mr. Jalapeno will be driving then.
Glad you made it through ok!
Parking lots are insane everywhere.
Thanks!
Yeah, my brother called it, too. I told him last night about my shopping plans for today, and the first thing out of his mouth was “Traffic’s gonna be nuts. Are you sure you want to do that?”
Glad you made it home without incident or (hopefully) too much stress! I more or less accidentally got my grocery shopping dealt with before the holiday crunch, and am planning to lie low for some days.
I would have preferred to have finished with groceries earlier on, but it just wasn’t happening. A nice driver waved me into the line of traffic waiting to leave the parking lot today, so I must have had some good karma payback for something I did.
Ah, traffic is such an inconvenience added to the stress of Xmas meals, glad you slipped through, hope the last leg with Mr. P will go well. It’s quiet and sunny here this morning.
Thanks Aurora! Today was uneventful, yay!
Ugh, ours is the smallest Wegman’s store in the entire chain, and parking there is crazy, too — but nothing like, for example, their Mothership outside Rochester, where I have been rear-ended in the parking lot two of two times I’ve been there. Not seriously, thank goodness, but sheesh (and not even during a busy holiday).
Hooray for the small local shop! Enjoy your holiday!
I can only imagine how crazy the Wegman’s Mothership is! There’s a larger Wegman’s that’s only 2 towns away from me, but their parking lot is ungodly. I’d rather step on Legos than drive thru that mess.
Wegman’s! Jealous, even with the traffic.
Whoever designed that traffic interchange was a sadist. ?
Those parking lots are the worst, give me a freeway any day! Hope you have all you need for the holiday feasting and that you enjoy every bite!
Happy Holidays, all! Whuf December has been busy, how did I manage when I was working?? We went to Hawaii for a week, which was nice. Saw snow on the volcano peaks, and lava pools at Kilauea. And it’s been manic here ever since — post-vacation stuff and pre-Christmas stuff. As of this morning I am (nearly) ready for the holidays. Gifts are bought and wrapped, cards are sent, cookies are baked, tree and decorations are up… now I can relax a bit 🙂 Just have to do a little cooking tomorrow morning.
Wore a lot of perfume in Hawaii but haven’t worn much since. Must remedy. Xmas Eve will likely be AG Nuit Etoilee, seems like I always end up picking that one for Xmas Eve. Maybe Winter Delice for Xmas.
Happy Holidays!
The snow in Hawaii made my local weather station.
That sounds like a lovely trip! Congratulations on being (nearly) ready for all the holiday excitement.
Lucky you pixel, that trip sounds perfect!
SotD: Synthetic Jungle – it does not disappoint, but I did not get that “wow” factor upon first wearing. Loving everyone’s comments! Will try to stop by tomorrow.
Happy Holidays!
You too, lillyjo!
I will sniff that one if I can tear myself away from Incense Pure!
I am feeling SJ more as a warm weather scent, though it has some heft and happily for me, (a soft) staying power. I’m going to go with something else for our Christmas Eve gathering…still thinking…incense something sounds good…
I’m sitting in the easy chair trying not to fall asleep. We had the holiday get together today, and there was great food and conversation, with a minimum of drama…yay! Had time to take the Wild One to the dog park, came back and did the dishes. Watching football, sort of, and reading NST, sort of. ?
Wore You or Someone Like You today. The pineapple note was a nice counterpoint to the heavy elements of the meal.
I’m glad you had a good day and hope you will sleep well tonight!
My day today will be very like your day here. I look forward to the events, but also to returning to my easy chair and won’t mind falling asleep! 😀
Pineapple is in that? I just tried it the other day from a sample I got. I never noticed that, but it is definitely “juicy”.
P.S. I’m glad your gathering and celebration went well.
It reads as pineapple on my skin, but grapefruit and bergamot are listed. Maybe they come across as pineapple?
Merry Christmas to you, Calypso! I hope you have a lovely weekend.
Very pleased to hear that your family gathering was a calm and bright one!
Our wrapping, shopping and decorating finished up yesterday, the eggnog-making will commence today, and I’m basking in Ummagumma which is blending with my coffee quite nicely. Hopefully the kitchen won’t go up in a poof of brandy- and rum-infused flames — that eggnog recipe, hooo-weee. ?
Brandy AND rum? ? RESPECT!
Indeed. ?
Got an espresso question for those of you who partake — any recommendations for a small espresso machine? My husband’s has died, oh nooooooo….!
We have a small Nespresso, which we quite like. Especially now that other companies make coffee for it. In a pinch while deciding, you could try the manual Aeropress.
My husband has a Simonelli Musica. He’s had it for at least 6 years and has had no problems. He’s even skipped a few “services”. It has a big tank and a good steamer, so if you have company you can churn out the espressos/cappucinos on demand. Its only downside is that it overheats if you don’t switch it off after you’ve made your espresso/s – so you can’t leave it on for the whole day. But it heats up quickly (less than 15 minutes). We had a KitchenAid espresso machine before this one – I liked the 50s Italian style and we had it in red- but it was rubbish. Hope this helps.
Not sure ours is “small”, but we’ve had a Delonghi super-automatic for a few years and love it. I don’t have a machine rec, but if you or your husband wants to do some research on machine types before choosing one, I highly recommend the Whole Latte Love website (no affiliation). We have purchased equipment (both new and reconditioned) from them and their customer service is beyond great. Never had a problem.
Happy Holidays everyone! 🙂
Happy Holidays!
Happy Holidays!
Happy Holidays!
I’m in Milky Musk, finished my morning yoga, and happily drinking coffee and browsing online. I’ll be in Theorema later today. Happy holidays to all and happy Christmas Eve to those celebrating.
Mr. SP is busy making seafood pasta salad and after he cleans up (!), I’ll go in and start the cinnamon rolls and breakfast casserole for tomorrow morning. One of three sons here so far and all will join us. I will make an effort to appreciate all the moments!
Happy holidays, D! All your foods sound delicious.
Hope you all had a wonderful, appreciated time springpansy!
We ate our rib roast last night, duck is prepped for rotisserie tonight, and my husband is working on the stuffed mushrooms for Boxing Day.
Wearing Clinique Wrappings.
My aunt is coming over tonight to spend Christmas Eve with my mother and me. We really appreciate that, considering that she flies tomorrow evening to Italy, to spend the New Year celebrations and the rest of the winter season with her son and his family. Since it was a last minute decision, we decided to order Persian food, which I will pick up later this afternoon and I will get the dessert from our favorite bakery place. We will Zoom with my sisters and their families in the evening. We are grateful to be able to share with them, despite the distance.
Having my third cup of coffee and almost ready to finish our Christmas decoration.
Happy Friday and Merry Christmas NST! ?
You smell festive. Best wishes for your aunt getting to your place — there’s been too many flight cancellations. Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Thank you, Hajusuuri! So far her flight has not been cancelled, but she is crossing fingers, since she knows that could happen at any minute. Wishing her the best, as she has not seen his son in two years.
Urgh, I’m so worried about these cancellations, and hoping I won’t have trouble going home to CA next week!
Merry Christmas to you and your mom, pl67. You are a good daughter for your mom, she’s lucky to have you.
Thank you for your kind words, Amyitis. I appreciate them! I wish you a very Merry Christmas too!
You smell fantastic! I plan on wearing Wrappings tomorrow as that is the one bottle I brought with me; I also have lotion along too! It doesn’t matter what the temperature will be since I will apply the hajusuuri-level of sprays anyways!
Have a wonderful visit with your aunt and family!
Thank you, Gail!
You will smell fantastic in Wrappings. The lotion is as good and strong as the perfume. I love them both! Spray lavishly for more enjoyment!
Thank you, Hajusuuri! So far her flight has not been cancelled, but she is crossing fingers, since she knows that could happen at any minute. Wishing her the best, as she has not seen his son in two years.
Thankful I have a BUB of your SOTD!
Enjoy tonight with your Mom and Aunt. I hope that her travel plans hold together…
Wrappings is bub worthy for sure!
We had a simple and lovely time with my aunt. Her flight hasn’t been canceled so far, so wishing her the best!
Still lounging because I’m too lazy to get dressed before I have to be ready to head to 3 pm services, where I’ll be ushering. Why get dressed twice, I say…
After a lovely snowfall yesterday, we have fog and rain today. So, a lot of the pretty snow will disappear. ☹️
Can’t decide on scent. I may do Gabrielle Essence or Eau des Merveilles. Or, if I want some spice, Oeillet Bengale.
Hope everyone has a relaxing and joyful weekend. Merry Christmas.
It was very foggy here today too.
Merry Christmas!
Yuck for foggy weather! Hope that goes away for you.
Happy Holidays to all of my Fragrant Friends!! Just relaxing today–all the gifts are wrapped, plans set, bag packed….off to my sister’s house tomorrow for a day of fun with family and lots of homemade cookies. Can’t wait.
SOTD is Andy’s LADDM….maybe for tomorrow, too.
Happy Holidays jepster! We managed to get something special for dinner tomorrow at Costco, so we are set! Whoo hoo!
You smell great!
I am so tempted to get a decant of that.
Have fun!
I’m in Casmir today from a decant sent by a lovely NSTer. I may switch it up before work.
Hoping all of NST has a peaceful Christmas Eve surrounded by family and friends. ?
Merry Christmas Eve Deva!
You smell awesome!
Happy Christmas. I hope T Rex is sharing her turkey with you!
Merry Christmas Eve ? to those who celebrate and Happy Holidays ? to all NST’ers!
It’s a snow-free Christmas here with temps in the mid-50’s today but dreary and drizzly; the weather seems to echo the strangeness that has been this whole year. I’m enjoying wearing Bvlgari Blv Notte today; festive yet subdued, just perfect for the mood of the day.
It’ll be a quiet Christmas for us this year as my son and his family are visiting in-laws on the East coast but we’ll celebrate when they return next week and will be seeing just a few friends to celebrate the season. Looking forward to tonight’s abbreviated (since there’s just the two of us) Polish Christmas Eve supper – including mushroom soup made with dried forest mushrooms, rye bread, pierogi, herring, and Cioci Flo’s famous (poppyseed) kolaczki.
One of my favorite joys, especially this year when there is more time to savor, is pulling out the holiday decorations. I have many handmade items gifted to me by friends and family members who are no longer here, and it comforts my heart to still have them here with me in this form. Some of my favorites include embroidered Christmas stockings for all of us made by my beloved late mother-in-law, crocheted Mr. and Mrs. Santa figures made by Cioci Helen, and a lovely self-portrait of a young girl named Brenda and her Golden Retriever Dewars on a mountaintop gazing at the Christmas star; she was a delightful coworker who sadly left the earth at much too young an age. Everywhere I look I see love and I remember so many happy moments I have been fortunate to share and I am grateful. ?
And I am grateful to you, Robin, for providing this lovely site and all the NST’ers who brighten my day here! Wishing you peace and joy and a healthy and happy 2022! ❤️
Merry Christmas Laila! Your supper sounds delicious.
Merry Christmas, Laila! Your delicious supper surrounded by your meaningful holiday decorations makes the night perfect. Enjoy!
Merry Christmas Laila! Thank you for your beautiful post full of gratitude. So perfect for the season.
I love that you have so many meaningful treasures.
Polish Christmas Eve supper sounds fantastic, hope it was!
2 more hours to go at work. It has been non-stop busy. The only toys left are the ” misfits” ?
My daughter woke me up at 12:30 a.m and said ” mom it’s Christmas Eve, I can have a present now” I did not lol, because I was very tired! I gave her a present at 8 this morning.
My sotd is Coco edp.
Almost there, Lillyjo! You survived the day! And you smell terrific!
I survived the day and then drove to McDonald’s for dinner! Awful, I know but I just needed to sit down.
Hey, we had frozen pizza…. You can have anything when you are wearing Coco and smell so good.
We are having hot dogs and french fries today. Time to rest, relax, and smell good in a cloud of Avignon!
You can make it lillyjo!
I did it! Punched out at 6pm on the nose!
Woohoo, glad that’s over! 🙂
Yay.
You made it, lillyjo! I had leftover mashed potatoes and a hot dog for dinner. Too tired for anything else. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Have a very happy evening and I hope you can relax now and enjoy Christmas. yay!
Merry Christmas Eve, NST! ?⭐?
Productive day today. I got my COVID booster today, and a new vacuum. The Costco parking lot wasn’t nearly as crazy as I thought it was going to be. Mr. Jalapeno’s reaction was “Oh, this isn’t bad at all. Just a normal busy day.”
So far, the only thing I am feeling from the shot is a sore arm. But that happens with any and all shots I get. We shall see how I feel later on tonight, and tomorrow.
SOTD = commando before the shot, and SSS incense Pure afterwards. Gotta have priorities. Now, to make a meatloaf while I still feel OK!
I hope you have no ill side effects and have a wonderful Christmas!
Still have just a sore arm, although it is bothering me more now than it was earlier tonight. Not bad enough to reach for some Advil yet.
I laughed about your daughter’s early Christmas eve wakeup call for you!
Hoping Costco here is relatively calm next week when our tires arrive for installation….
Sending you good Costco vibes for that occasion!
Merry Christmas. Keep well and merry!
Thank you Kanuka!
Wow, that is ballsy to get your booster on Xmas eve! Hope you are still feeling well today.
Ballsy? Not really. We didn’t have any plans for today, and the fact that nearly everything is closed makes a great excuse to sit home and veg out, which is exactly what we did. Plus I stayed up very late last night watching Midnight Mass from the Vatican.
Still sore and a little fatigued. I’d say that this shot had the fewest and lightest bout of side effects so far.
Oh good, so glad! My 2nd was the worst but booster was pretty bad too.
Merry Christmas Eve! Was one year ago today I was in a car accident and I am feeling so grateful to be healthy and alive today.
Also very happy to report my sister is getting better each day post-chemo…has more energy and is eating more too.
Might wear Shalimar MVP tonight. Great big hugs to all the kind and caring NSTers that make up this community!♥️
Have a vanilla-scented Christmas, She-ra!
Hugs back She-ra and Merry Christmas!
Wonderful news about your sister!
Very happy to hear about your sister <3 and glad that you are healthy a year after the accident!
Brilliant news about your sister. It can be so hard to adjust from illness to wellness mentally so sending love to you and her. Merry Christmas!
Yea for good news on the health front!
I’m glad you and your sister are doing well!
Merry Christmas to You all!!
We are Polish so we celebrate the 24th of December as the most important day of the year. We also exchange gifts on Christmas Eve. My gift was a thoughtful one – just a loaded visa gift card haha!!
Immediately I had to get something off my wishlist. I had a hard time deciding between Winter Palace or another bottle of Kedu or Russian Leather. I don’t know why but I ended up ordering the Russian Leather. I think it is because I have been drooling over that wolf and the moon graphics on the bottle for the longest time:) yay!! I am saving the rest of my $$$ for now…
Wolves are always a winner!
Yes. I noticed though that on the European Memo website some bottles of Russian Leather feature a bear not a wolf. I really wanted a wolf and I got the one with a wolf.
It seems that there are quite a few Christmas eve traditions from countries in Eastern Europe.
Oh yes!! Many of them such as exactly 12 dishes on the Christmas supper table.
That’s a great scent! Merry Christmas!
Wesołych Świąt! Did you make the traditional Polish Christmas Eve supper? Although I’m second-generation American, my heritage is Polish on both my mom and dad’s sides and I love the Polish customs and traditions, especially on Christmas and Easter. (See my post above for our abbreviated dinner last night.). I especially love the Christmas Eve wafer ‘oplatek’ tradition.
Happy Christmas!!! It’s 3pm Christmas Day and Alex has just said, ‘What do you want for dinner?’ Maybe a BBQ? What a happy, relaxing day….about to open the champs. Here’s to NST!!!!!
Champagne and firing up the grill for Christmas dinner? Sounds great!
Yay for a Christmas BBQ!
Lovely!
Sounds perfect! Enjoy your day.
Happy Christmas!
Happy Christmas, and I hope you’re having a wonderful Boxing Day!
Happy holidays to everyone! I’ve had a nice, relaxing week off work doing a lot of nothing. Also, not really doing anything for Christmas this year, which is fine by me. Still watching plenty of Christmas movies though, including Christmas horror movies (horror’s my favorite genre).
The boyfriend got his booster last night, so it’s been a low key day while he rides out his headache and fatigue. We had frozen pizza for dinner for the first time in a long time. It hit the spot! Tomorrow night we’ll have steak, brussels sprouts, and mashed red potatoes.
Wearing Amouage Memoir Woman tonight for its wintery opulence. I should wear it more often. I can’t stop sniffing myself. Tomorrow I’ll wear Fille en Aiguilles.
Happy Holidays therabbitsflower! You smell festively opulent and I hope your boyfriend recovers quickly in time for dinner tomorrow.
Happy Holidays!
Happy Holidays! Hope your day is great! Your meal sounds wonderful!
Happy holidays therabbitsflower! I hope your boyfriend is fully recovered from his booster. ?
Merry Christmas, fragrant friends! Miss you all; one of my NY resolutions is to pop in more!
I’m in Moonlight Patchouli today and loving every minute of it!
Well, I think all my company is finally gone lol. My sis, mom, BIL, and nephew came Wednesday and stayed until this morning. My BIL has to work tomorrow so they’re driving back today. It was a great visit but after have company 4 times in the past 6 weeks I am going to hibernate all this next week.
We had lots of good food though. I made vegetable beef soup and Mexican cornbread on Thursday; then yesterday for Christmas Eve dinner a spinach artichoke lasagna, big Italian salad, roasted sweet potatoes and carrots, garlic bread and a ginger cake with crème anglaise and rum whipped cream. So good! Made brunch this morning before they left. Now I’m stuffed and stuck on the couch!
Hey, KellyC! Good to see you!
Mexican cornbread? Did you put jalapeño in it, or what? Do tell.? Stuffed and on the couch is a great place to be—enjoy!
Yes! Well, it has green chiles, pimientos, green onion, cheddar cheese, and corn. Throw all that in the cornbread batter- sooooo good with some soup!
Oh, that sounds really good! I tend to eat cornbread with chili more than anything else—often with part of my portion drizzled with honey and the other part crumbled up into the chili. Your version would seriously upgrade the chili accompaniment!
Merry Christmas!
Hey there KellyC! Merry Christmas to you!
Merry Christmas, KellyC! The dishes you make always sound so delicious. Enjoy your downtime next week. Sounds like you deserve it!
I love to cook I really do, but after the past few weeks, this ol’ girl is tired haha!
I’ve been offline with poor to no internet access. Holed up in Millbrae with mom & dad with lots of cold rain outside. My brother is sick so just the four of us today. Wishing you all fragrant holidays! I’m wearing Nex Ambre à Lèvres.
cazaubon, stay warm and fragrant!
Thank you, same to you too Lisa! 🙂
Happy holidays. Stay warm and dry. Hugs!
Thanks and hugs back to you!
I will try and blow some of my sun back your way ?
Thanks lillyjo! I hope you are having a good Christmas day!
You smell lovely! Ambre à Lèvres is the perfect cozy, comforting scent. Christmas confession, I carry a bottle in my purse…
Merry Christmas from the North Bay — hope you’re staying cozy! It was so cold today, and apparently snow on the way tomorrow night!? I hope your brother feels better very soon.
We’re snuggled up by the fire. 🙂 Hope you are cozy too.
Rainy Christmas Day twins! Stay safe & warm cazaubon.
You too!
Hello, NST! Merry Christmas?/Happy Holidays/Happy Boxing Day—whatever you’re celebrating in your own particular, personal corner of the globe!!!
My unopened bottle of L’Heure Bleue that I planned to break out today is literally buried under a pile of stuff—and i didn’t fancy doing any home archaeology—so for my SOTD I dabbed on a few drops of LHB-long-lost-relative Red Moscow instead. Close enough; problem solved.?
Be well and waft on, all.
Nice to see you, baseball friend! Happy holidays!
Likewise, Laila! I’m glad you had some nice weather to accompany your Christmas—and hope it holds awhile longer for you to enjoy!
Merry Christmas!
And to you, lillyjo!!
Merry Christmas!
Thanks, cazaubon! Merry Christmas to you!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays Creosote!
Hey Jalapeno! Merry Christmas to you, too! I hope you’re still doing well following your booster?
Last night was a little rough. Bad night of sleep. My arm is still sore from the shot, which seems to be SOP for my body. Other than that, it’s rather uneventful. Thanks for asking!
Happy holidays to you! L’Heure Bleue is one of my “good china” fragrances — it gets packed up for evacuations every wildfire season but doesn’t get worn often enough. Here’s to being less precious and properly *enjoying* the things we love in the new year!
Happy Holidays, Isabella! Cheers to that sentiment—do wear your LHB more often and enjoy it as much as it deserves!?
Mine is a FB I got to replenish my supply just before I finally finished the last of my decants. I can’t wait to crack ‘er open and spritz.
Merry Christmas! I’m wearing Guerlain AA Winter Delice, a perfect holiday blend of greenery tinged with gingerbread.
Mother Earth and Sky Father gave us an unexpected Christmas present today. After this morning’s early rain, it was supposed to be cloudy today with occasional peeks of sun. But in late morning the clouds disappeared and bright ? appeared in a clear blue sky with temps in the mid-40’s and only a gentle occasional breeze. We treated ourselves to a nice soak in our outside hot tub, basking in the warm sunshine, and enjoyed watching the birds visit our feeders and listening to the small waterfall we had installed in our yard this summer, as a treat for all we’ve missed due to Covid. A very surprising and pleasant Christmas morning!
Getting ready to prepare dinner now but I wanted to share with you a Christmas Carol I unexpectedly discovered last year I’d never heard before, ‘I Wonder as I Wander,’ that has quickly become a favorite. Regardless of your beliefs or faith, I hope its beauty will speak to you as it did to me in these two very different versions:
The pure, sweet sounds of this traditional Appalachian song as it was written and sung (its origins can be found in the Description) https://youtu.be/qRMSmaA-1-I
And the power and majesty of nature in this epic orchestral version https://youtu.be/zF3zb4Hbmhk
I love them both and hope you enjoy!
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas Laila, you smell great!
Sounds like a wonderful Christmas morning. That’s one of my favorite Christmas songs.
“I Wonder as I Wander” is one of my very favorite Christmas carols, and in fact, I will be playing it in church tomorrow on my bowed psaltery. Yesterday evening for the Christmas Eve service I did a duet of “Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence” (another favorite–I like minor keys) with my husband, with him on piano and me on alto recorder. I like to pull out the somewhat less familiar hymns that don’t get played or sung often enough (IMHO).
I totally agree with you on the ‘less familiar’ music. Sounds beautiful! Admitting my ignorance, I had to look up what a ‘bowed psaltery’ was and also not familiar with ‘Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence,’ had to look up that one, too, so thank you for increasing my musical knowledge!?. I bought a dulcimer just before the pandemic hit after falling in love with it at our favorite Appalachian music festival, but haven’t picked it up or had lessons yet. Am trying ti self-teach piano after having had some lessons a few years ago, but it’s not easy. Hoping to get some lessons once this pandemic is over. So I appreciate all musicians for making the world a better place!?
Those are beautiful songs and I’m with you on liking the minor keys. There’s something so haunting about them (in a good way!)
Merry Christmas, Laila! I’m afraid we simply listened to pretty much the entire Pogues catalogue today, in lieu of properly lovely and reverential Christmas music. Your hot tub soak and sunny skies sound like a wonderful treat!
Laila, thanks for sharing the two versions of that carol. Both so different, yet beautifully and poignantly sung. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
It’s mid-afternoon and I’m headed into San Francisco for a Christmas dinner with two friends. I’m wearing Bigarade Concentrée, which is a wonderful foil to the more ambery scents I’ve been wearing lately. But still so Christmas-y.
Merry Christmas!
A Christmas dinner with friends in San Francisco sounds so nice! Hope it was enjoyable.
Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you are all relaxing and enjoying the evening. I’m in PdN Eau de Yuzu, with a spritz of Mandarine Basilic on top. Perfect combination for this warm, 76 degree day.
We had a super low key day here, doing laundry, opening gifts, walking the dog and packing for the trip tomorrow. Scrambled eggs and fruit salad for dinner since we’ve managed to clean up all of the leftovers!
Merry Christmas!
Have a safe trip!
Thanks lillyjo! I hope you had a great day today with your kiddos. ?
Safe and easy travels tomorrow!
Thanks Jalapeno!
Merry Christmas! If I didn’t have leftovers to deal with I’d be with you on having eggs for dinner — an omelette and a big garlicky salad is my favorite bachelorette meal. Safe travels tomorrow!
Merry Christmas to you and Littles! Your bachelorette meal sounds delicious. I need to jazz up my egg suppers, methinks. ?
Safe travels to you!
Thanks cazaubon. Merry Christmas to you!
Hope your trip goes well!
We had hristmas Eve service yesterday at church, followed by our traditional candlelight dinner. We shut the cats in another room (so no jumping on the table!), light candles, turn off the lights, and have a nice dinner together using the good china, with mellow Christmas music in the background, and reflect on the year that is about to end, and count our blessings. It is sort of like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s in one. The first course (homemade cream of mushroom soup) and dessert (lemon pudding) are pretty well fixed, but the main course varies from year to year. This year it was baked salmon with creamed spinach and garlic bread. The only thing leftover is some of the lemon pudding.
We will have regular Sunday service tomorrow, but nothing today. I decided this year to make two celebration dinners for us, and tomorrow will be roast duck. I had considered making it today, but decided just to devote this day to chilling and just doing whatever I feel like with no obligations and nowhere I need to be. It isn’t very often I get a day to spend that way, so I thought I should make the most of it.
Your Christmas tradition sound lovely. I hope your day has been peaceful. ?
Yay for a chill, quiet Christmas Day!
Your meals and traditions sound wonderful!
Happy Boxing Day, all! I hope everyone had a peaceful day yesterday surrounded by love. ❤️
I’ve been such a dolt; I thought since Robin said she would be back on Monday that no one would be posting, lol! ? d’oh. What planet am I on? ?
Did I have any twins on the 24th in wearing Nuit de Noel? Yesterday was Krigler Good Fir, and I discovered it had gone off. ? Can’t afford to replace that one, ugh.
But the sun is out today and I will start on my new Nuit de Nomade sample set. I’ve wanted that one for a long time. Any love for the brand here?
Now it’s up to the beach and wet dog walks. ?
I wasn’t your twin yesterday but my childhood friend wants to give me her mother’s bottle of Caron Nuit de Noel. Her mother was my mother’s childhood friend so having her bottle will be extra special.
Aw, that’s so sweet! It will be doubly treasured. ?
🙂
Happy Boxing Day! Or, Washing The Dishes Day as it will be around here. Eventually. Caffeine must be consumed first.
The sun is out! Briefly. It’s cold, last night’s hail is still sitting on the deck (we had thunder and lightning too!), and snow is in the forecast for the next 3 days. I plan to watch old movies. What scent goes with Cary Grant in The Bishop’s Wife?
Cary Grant is so good in that movie – I’d suggest a Yardley Lavender or violet.
Stay warm!!! Good luck with the dishes!
I adore that movie; I’ve seen it at least three times. Sigh….he made a good angel. ?
And I second MossyBerry’s suggestions.
Happy Boxing Day pixel!
We did Xmas with my husband’s family today, so Monday will be Washing The Dishes Day in my house. And NOT eating day, I think. Three days of holiday feasting has worn me out!
I will try to read comments and catch up with y’all’s goings on, but want to be sure to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and to say how much I appreciate this sharing, caring place!
Merry Christmas! Hope yours was great!
Merry Christmas, MossyBerry!
So one of my resolutions for the coming year is to get out and try more Denver area restaurants while also treating my hubs to “date night” lol. So I have reservations every Sunday night for the next 4 weeks starting tonight. I’m wearing Aura for the dinner/date.
Smelling great KellyC!
Have fun tonight!
Happy holidays, everyone! I’m chiming in very late here. I hope you all had a good Christmas/Boxing Day if you celebrate, or at least some respite from work.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my week off and Christmas with the family. But I do have to say I was very anxious about Covid at gatherings, it’s very upsetting that it’s still not behind us. That’s been the only thing weighing on me though. I’m feeling very grateful and happy otherwise.
I’ve been happily indulging in holiday edible treats and fragrances. This past week I wore Akkad, Sticky Fingers, Mortel, and CDG Kyoto. I’m really loving Sticky Fingers and eyeing a bigger bottle if I thunk my decant.
Tulipani, I am anxious too, and hoping I can talk my husband into a quiet New Years at home.
