Time is flying by...it's almost Thanksgiving. Before things get too busy, we're working on a listening list to carry you through the winter, in case you don't feel like reading or watching tv. Tell us about any great audio content you've discovered: podcasts, audio books, even new music or streaming radio stations.
And of course, tell us what perfume you're wearing today, and/or what fragrance we should be wearing when we listen to your content.
Or, as always, just talk about something else.

I’m in Samsara edt, from I think the very late 1990s— not as rounded as the original edp, heavy in the yellow flowers, but even so it’s awfully good. One of my big regrets is not having bought the extrait back when the scent was launched: I bet that was just killer.
My musical obsession for the last few weeks has been a song called Iron by Woodkid: it and its video are just overwhelming, a minimalist vision of warriors heading into a mythical, unwinnable battle. I watch it at least once a day. It haunts me. (Samsara is a pretty good accompaniment to it, now that I think about it.)
Ohhhhh, *leans in and sniffffffs* you smell marvelous! I was wondering what to wear, I think we’ll be Samsara twins today.
Email me your addy – I have vintage extrait. You can find me at ldetrich at yodel-land dawt com. 😀
Really, nobody else up yet? ? I’m in Tam Dao and having a latte with cinnamon sprinkles. I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before, but when I’m in the mood for background sounds, it’s almost always a jazz streaming radio service called jazzgroove.org. They are amazing — best curated set of music collections I’ve come across. I do support them with an annual contribution, but it’s also possible to listen for free … although (full disclosure) I think they’re in the midst of a fund drive now so there might be more interruptions than usual.
Taking notes!
Added jazzgroves to my favourites! Great tipp. And Tam Dao is one of my desert island scents ❤️
You smell great!
In a spritz of Bois d’Argent, trying to turn grey day into silver. My two most regular podcasts are “All About Agatha (Christie)” and “Happier in Hollywood”.
All about Agatha sounds very interesting! Will give that a go
2nd that, thanks AnnieA!
I listen to Happier in Hollywood too! I’m a few years behind where they are now.
Once the weather cools off I always find myself craving fragrances rich with tree resins. So my Chris Rusak fragrances have been in constant rotation plus Olympic Orchids Wood Cut and bring on the birch tar! So out comes the Beaufort London. I listen to podcasts whilst engaged in housework and yard work. If you like a storytelling, episodic horror pod, I cannot recommend Old Gods of Appalachia enough. I Saw What You Did is a marvelous movie pod, 2 friends talk about all kinds of films and life. Much merriment ensues. I will always love My Favorite Murder, especially if true crime is something that interests you. John Stamos has a great podcast called The Grand Scheme and the first season is about the plot to kidnap Frank Sinatra’s grown son, a true story. And last but not least! There are fantastic perfume pods. Perfume on the Radio being one of my favorites. I have really been enjoying The Great Women Artists pod and also Bow Down: Women Artists on Spotify. Have a marvelous weekend!
Perfume pods? I had no idea. Thank you!
I love I Saw what you Did and MFM! I’ll have to try Perfume on the Radio too.
I’m loving two podcasts: You’re Wrong About, and Maintenance Phase.
Both are debunking what we think we know about media and health.
Also streaming SBS Chill, a radio station out of Sydney. I love having it on all day while I’m working.
Sampling the gorgeous Neroli Outrenoir and Angelique Noir thanks to a generous splitter. Whoa, where have these Guerlain’s been all my life? Living in the perfume hinterlands, I never get to try stuff like this.
I am listening to Maintenance Phase right now! (I mean, I paused it to read NST, but I’m in the middle of the episode about the keto diet — I’m listening to them out of order as the whim strikes me.) It’s my new favourite podcast.
But I can’t keep up: I subscribe to about 25 podcasts and I know there are hundreds of others I’d love, but who has the time? Movies, TV shows, books, magazines, music, podcasts, websites: I’m drowning in input.
I feel the same… it’s too overwhelming. Something that is supposed to be relaxing just causes more stress!
I feel the same way. I have one podcast that I keep up with all the episodes (Guardian Football Weekly), one that I listen to when the most recent episode of GFW is done, and then a few others that I drop into if cleaning or driving for a lot of errands. I don’t watch anything at all except the Great British Baking Show and soccer. I livestream a radio station for music, read books, and still feel like I’m drowning in content.
Ohh. Definitely created a lemming. At the risk of verging on the political here, I am very interested in the errrmmm science and psychology of Keto. Will look that up ????
I’m spending a lot of time listening to the conversations and lessons on my Waking Up app (mindfulness meditation). I find it is a good way for me to start my day — it keeps me slow and thoughtful right after I wake up, as opposed to the frenetic, jump-into-email-and-work mental frenzy that usually occurs as soon as I become conscious in the morning.
I’m wearing Initio Absolute Aphrodisiac this morning, and smelling fairly yummy, if I do say so myself.
I’ve heard good things about that one. Do you feel it’s full bottle worthy?
I did at one time, because I bought a full bottle……looking back, I might have been swayed into a quick purchase (it’s not a bargain basement scent) by my initial excitement. Lemme know if you need a sample, Deva — be happy to send some your way, if you are stationary for a long enough period of time. 🙂
Def not bargain basement! I have a small decant of Side Effect, which I really enjoy. I zoned in on AA after researching the brands offerings because, well, vanilla! But I think MVP has satisfied my vanilla cravings. I appreciate your sample offer, very kind of you, but I think I’m good. ?
Morning all, I’m joining Pyramus – my SOTD is vintage Samsara extrait.
Mr. SmokeyToes and I are meeting his mother today for brunch, they both have birthdays in November. I sent her down the perfume rabbit-hole years ago, her B-day gift is Prada’s Infusion d’Iris. His is today, and it’s the 17th anniversary of our first date. I was smitten from the get-go (hello tall, dark, and handsome!), we shared a love of yoga and hiking. One month after our first date, he moved in and here we are, several years (and cats) later…
I’m looking forward to hearing what people enjoy listening to. I’m interested in podcasts but haven’t gone down that wabbit hole… yet.
Happy anniversary!
I was out for a few hours so I sprayed some Samsara into my mask, and the expected nose-blindness never happened: I could smell it constantly, and it has never smelled so beautiful to me. In truth it smells better on fabric than it does on my skin. That was unexpected!
Happy anniversary!
Crap, I somehow posted the same comment twice. What I meant to say to you was “Very happy anniversary!”
I love samsara , sandalwood bliss
Happy anniversary, and happy birthday to Mr. SmokeyToes! Hope his mom will love the Prada.
Hi Robin, she did! It smelled wonderful on her. She couldn’t wait to spritz it.
She likes iris and aldehydes, Hiris is another favorite of hers.
Oh lovely.
Happy anniversary!
Yay for 17 years of cats, yoga, and hikes ?
Happy anniversary! And happy November birthdays to your loved ones!
I like silence, so I am no help at all during a listening poll! Today I am raking the back yard and running a few errands. The front yard’s maple is bare but the back yard oaks are losing their leaves slowly. I’m wearing Tihota.
? I also like silence and miss making leaf piles
I also have a tendency to leave it silent in our house.
Another fan of silence.
I’m in the not for everyone but a favorite of mine, Stephen Jones. Now that I think about it, this would have been a good match for Robin’s psychedelic moon photo. I’m lazily lying about, looking at catalogs and radiating violet and carnation.
My last fun audiobook listen was The Hail Mary Project. Now that a week or so has past since I finished it, I am reflecting on some of the sillier aspects of the story, and also the really dire “solutions” to the catastrophe (authoritarian decision-making, drastic environmental degradation, and kidnapping??) but I laughed and was on tenterhooks, in a good way, and thoroughly enjoyed the sci-fi romp as I listened.
Oh. Almost forgot! I wanted to mention that I discovered perfume scented erasers at Luckyscent, and just bought a couple for stocking stuffer-ular prezzies. They aren’t expensive and look like a lot of fun. No idea how they smell! This just a PSA for folks looking for gift smellies that won’t break the bank, etc, etc.
Scented rubbers! I mean erasers not …though why not!?
A CP for the Christmas/ holiday season could be perfume related stocking fillers, gifts under $50. To go with your rubbers I would add Blackwing coloured pencils which are made with Japanese “incense” wood ( I’m guessing cedar” ) which smell great when sharpened. Also perfumes ink ( herbin) for fountain pen people.
Scented rubbers! I was given scented rubbers by a friend in college in fact. Opened one, I kid you not! banana scented. Nope. Just nope.
Oh, no! Good for a laugh in the heat of the moment, at least!
Those erasers look fun–and Astier de Villatte fragrances? sign me up.
And @kanuka, love the CP idea!
Ooh, those do look like fun! I loved scented erasers when I was little. Still do.
You smell fantastic! That one is one of my regrets, sort of. (I regret no owning it but probably wouldn’t buy it today either.)
I waited too long and only found this bottle because someone here (maybe Foxbins?) tipped me off to a bottle on the the shelf of a Portland perfume store. The black meringue-shaped bottle is part of the fun for this one.
Yes, the packaging was perfect!
No SOTD yet…just finishing coffee and haven’t made it to the shower.
I’ve been listening to things a lot less lately; not sure why, but probably just too much going on and not enough time by myself to listen. When I have listened, I’ve been dipping into Alan Cumming’s Shelves, because he’s just such an entertaining personality and he interviews a wide variety of friends. (One of the latest is Iman, which I’ve been making my way through slowly.) Otherwise I’ve just stuck with my old standby — streaming KEXP when I’m not in meetings.
I enjoyed the audio version of his memoir.
I’ve decided that weekends henceforth will be Sample Backlog Homework days. Today I’m testing Slow Explosions and Chameleon. Slow Explosions isn’t grabbing me — a strong, realistic saffron note, some rose at the core, and to my nose a too-strong dose of cashmeran. Rose/saffron is a combination I love, but it’s already heavily present in my collection and in ways that better suit my taste. Chameleon is fun so far, and true to the name in that it keeps shifting on my skin, from an initial but fleeting ‘uh-oh’ aquatic note to something very like Demeter Wet Garden to something beachily tropical-fruity, and that’s just the first 20 minutes. It now seems to be doing a slow slide into something that reminds me of Terracotta.
Been enjoying Hoyt Axton and Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen lately, neither new in the global sense but new to my ears. Though, things have been a little unmusical around here lately, likely due to stress and busyness and emotional tides.
I love saffron and rose too. What are some of your faves?
Safran Troublant when I’m feeling cuddly, AP when I’m feeling growly. I think there are some others in the mix that I’ve been neglecting. What about you?
My favorite is an obscure, d/c’ed perfume by a Spanish house, Scent on Canvas, called Rose Opera. I’m having a senior moment— what is AP?
Agent Provocateur, excellently described by Katie Puckrick as a “slutty rose.” 🙂
In MFK Grand Soir today. The weather was bad all day and so was the natural light so no good photo on Instagram today. Hopefully tomorrow I csn come uo with something if only there is more sun outside.
You smell great!
Like Foxbins I prefer silence and find sounds other than bird calls from the garden very distracting . I seem to spend hours mindlessly tuning in and out of the birds and am especially smitten with the green finch’s raspy buzz at the moment. I have some in the garden and the sound takes me back to my early morning hill walk when I used to hear green finches and skylarks each day.
I can’t read when the radio is on etc. But I do have the app Radio Garden which is an interactive map allowing you to listen to live radio anywhere in the world. All you have to do is touch a green dot on the world atlas and you can zone in on any station, and I love hearing the different languages. I sometimes have Radio France Culture. Good for anyone learning a language.
Wearing confetti again. It just seems to capture the bright colours in the garden. Happy weekend!
Oh, also, Kate Winslet reading Therese Raquin was good ( audible).
I love the idea of that app, and anticipate hours of fun with it! I am just the opposite these days, needing the distraction of chatter nearly constantly when I am not working. (I can’t research or write even with only soft music playing. Must have silence for that.). I grew up without a television, and it always struck me as the strangest and most annoying thing that people would leave their TVs on as sort of background noise and visuals. I still can’t bear TV in the background, but now I understand the constant comfort of listening to a conversation or someone reading as I go about my chores, or while I’m on a walk, and so on.
My mum always had both the radio and TV playing together, all the time , plus she was getting deaf and I used to feel like I was going insane when I visited her.
One of the nicest sounds in my memory was when I was in hospital just after giving birth in Germany. Late at night the Russian woman in the opposite bed used to phone her family and her voice was like waves lapping against the shore, a kind of shusssh, shusssh, sound. It was beautiful.
I love the sound of Russian! I studied it in college. Their alphabet has distinct letters for the sounds of “sh,” “ch”, “zh”, and ShCh (yes!)!
I am so glad you told me about the alphabet sounds. Thank you.
my mom had no hearing left and almost no sight and she was cold all the time. I felt like a poached salmon when I would stay with her.
If you tune into NZ you can search for Radio NZ National , a non-commercial radio station and also a Maori language channel radio Te Upoko O Te Ika ( music )
Radio NZ news is about all I listen to, but will check out the app 🙂
That app is amazing, thank you!
I‘m going to test Tauers sundowner from a split after a long day of chores…
I‘ve been listening to Howl‘s moving castle by Dianna Wynne Jones on audiobook. I read it years ago and listening to it again now, I laughed out loud during parts of it. Such a joyful story.
That is such a niche book, I am assuming you are very familiar with the Miyazaki film. Not sure I have it in me to read the book, but I definitely would listen to the audio version. (It’s not the book — just my issue with reading fiction these days!) I just looked it up on Audible. Is the version you are enjoying read by Jenny Sterlin?
The Miyazaki film is like comfort food and holidays for me and my family.
I actually found out about the book because I saw the film and was so captivated I had to know more. The book is equally wonderful. Both book and movie stand side by side as two slightly different versions of the same thing – perhaps a little like two jazz standards.
Myazaki has a way of making his films aesthetically beautiful without it ever being kitsch (to me…). I watched most of them and here in Germany they are available on netflix now! (By the way – if you haven’t watched „Your Name“ give it a go, it’s not by Myazaki but another lovely anime story).
The audio version I have is narrated by Kristin Atherton. Her narration on this story is great.

A Olivier Polge / Chanel No. 5 piece in today’s Guardian. Polge talking about Chanel.
Eating a lazy breakfast on a sunny morning in Hawke’s Bay, with my beloved’s mother and brother. We drove up in beautiful weather yesterday, and it will be similar today for the drive back.
We’re then having lunch with my beloved’s sister, she is the person I have travelled with over the last few years, and I’ve brought a few perfume samples to pass on to her.
I’ve brought Rose Impériale to wear today, which was an impulse buy on my last trip. It’s from a company called Ausmane, I’ve never seen much about them, but I think they still exist.
Hawke’s Bay looks absolutely gorgeous! Hope it was a fun day Gaynor.
Today I’m wearing Olive by KKW fragrance. My best friend sent me a bottle because she “sniffed it in Ulta and it made her think of me and smile” and I just love it. There’s amber and patchouli and just some great green thing and I’m super chuffed.
Listening? Always The Current from Minnesota Public Radio.
Downloaded albums:
I’ll Be Your Mirror – tribute album to the Velvet Underground and Nico
Solar Power – Lorde
Blue Bannisters – Lana del Ray
Soberish – Liz Phair
A very thoughtful and generous friend you have there!
No doubt! I have no idea how I was so lucky that I got to meet her.
I’ve been liking Blue Bannisters!
Not listening to anything at the mo other than audiobooks, so I can’t play that game.
I DO want to give a shout out to all the honest people in world though…Last night I picked up a take out order, not realizing I left my debit card behind. Went to look for it this morning, realized I didn’t have it and racked my brain trying to remember where it could be. The restaurant kept it in their safe for me overnight since they had no contact info to reach out to me. So, thanks to all the honest people out there! ?
Also, finished my finger knit blanket after 4 starts and 4 frustrating rip outs! The fifth time was a charm and I’m happy with the way it turned out. Unfortunately, T-Rex has claimed it. I think she loves how soft it is (I used bulky chenille yarn).
While I was looking for yarn for this project, I saw velvet yarn that I just fell in love with. After scouring the internet, I found a beginners infinity scarf tutorial that I’m planning on doing for the winter. That velvet yarn is so soft and cozy! Even though I have a perfectly warm Aran wool scarf, I love the snuggle factor of the velvet yarn much more.
Currently in MVP because I didn’t listen to the voice in my head telling me to hoard it! ?
MVP is completely off the Guerlain site. A kind enabler who loves vanilla sent me a sample and now I am crazed to buy this.
Geez.
Oh, I understand your crazed need a 100%! I’m hoping it comes back, not only so you can purchase a bottle, but also so I can get a BUB. I mean really, with the price of perfumes right now, this is a bargain price for an absolutely lovely, quality fragrance! I think they could list it for twice as much and it would still sell out.
I emailed Guerlain because it was gone, and they said it’s gone for good. ?
This doesn’t make me happy at all.
It’s wrong
Boo hoooooooooo
I love honest people. I have been the recipient of their decent behavior more than once. And one time I left my purse on a chair in Vegas and someone chased me down to give it back. ❤️
Doesn’t it just warm the cockles of your heart?! Renews my faith in humanity, at least until I turn on the news…
Oh, don’t do that!! The news is not good. Give t-rex a scritch instead.
Someone once did an experiment leaving wallets in cabs in NYC cabs. A surprisingly high number were returned.
That’s good to know! ??
I’m so glad you were able to find it! Thank goodness for the kindness and honesty of strangers.
Yes, she was very thorough, even checked my ID when I picked it up.
My son dropped his wallet in a parking lot, and someone turned it in and then the amount of detective work done by a retail clerk to find and call my son was truly impressive. Yay to good people!
Indeed! Happy he got it back.
Sampling Maison Violet’s Compliment. Prefer Moon Bloom or Carnal Flower–something synthetic in this one is bugging me.
For those of you who didn’t get enough coffee or tea this morning, here’s an effective pick-me-up:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnD0H4VeHuY
Also, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss have a new album out, including this Lucinda cover:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FnJiwPpm2E
Thanks for reminding me of the new Plant/Krause album. Honestly, I don’t even know how to download an album to add it to my library anymore. What happened to my ITunes library…? I’m so lost with this kind of stuff…?
https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/music101/audio/2018821239/robert-plant-and-alison-krauss-raise-the-roof
I heard this nice interview with Robert Plant and Alison Krause yesterday about the album.
Parfums De Marly Delina Exclusif
I ? smell very good
listening :
Adele album, the new one. So far so good
Imagine Dragons ? Mercury , I love the songs My Life and Wreck
I know Taylor Swift has some new songs but I haven’t listened it them yet
I also listen to a lot of Italian music, Tiziano Ferro , Andrea , Eros..
I sometimes tune into Italian radio stations on the Radio Garden app just to see what I can understand ( practically nothing).
Oooo.. I have never heard of this app
Also, I have been buying a lot of lipstick ? these days
Charlotte Tilbury ? and Byredo lippy
I just bought a few tubes of lipstick – quick and easy glamour…
Which ones if you want to share.
I am going to keep my Byredo one but honestly, not sure it was worth it.. I don’t know. Maybe I have to have more makeup on to complete the look. It’s shimmery..
Sure! I purchased Shiseido’s VisionAiry Gel Lipstick Sleeping Dragon (true Red), Clinique’s Black Honey (my lips but better), and MAC’s Lip Luster in Spice It Up (warm-toned, medium-dark plum).
That looks really beautiful
We are scent twins today! I just got it in my fun sample box from Twisted Lily and am trying it out today. At first it seemed rather bland so I went back and sprayed A LOT and now I’m loving it. It’s a velvety, spicy rose with a nice musk. Litchi is one note I always have difficulty with. So I’m not sure if I would really love this–just as well, given the price!
Spray away!
IMHO the oud and the rose are very strong and it has a lot of staying power on me.
This was an instant love ❤️
Lately I have been really into rose ?
The bottle is beautiful, the color, the tassel.
I’m in Box of Eels. I was up early and smelling classy for my in home design consultation. Our living room furniture is almost as old as madtownteen and we are desperately in need of an update. I’ll meet with the designers again on December 4 to see what they’ve come up with. I’m excited.
Unlike many of you, I’ve actually never listened to an audio book.?Never read one on a kindle either. I am a slow reader, but I just love books. Physical books. We’ve got them on shelves, and taking up better parts of closets in our “cozy” (that’s code for small) 1937 colonial.
Now music? That I listen to everyday.
In the car I’ve been listening to xmradio, alternating between First Wave and Lithium, which are conveniently just a station apart.
At home we recently watched a new to me artist on ACL: Jade Bird. I love her. Immediately got her cd’s from the library and added them to our music library. She’s playing at First Ave in mpls in January and I am soooo tempted to take my college girl. We’ll see.
Also, Cat Power. She has a new album of covers coming out in January that I’m looking forward to. I just got tickets to see her in April. Seeing her live has been on my bucket list for years. That voice! I can’t wait!
Another recent purchase was The Kinks Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround. I had to have it after watching Wes Anderson’s The Darjeeling Limited, just could not get those songs out of my head. He really does make great soundtracks.
Chicken Parmesan for dinner tonight.? Happy Saturday!
Ahhh! Jade Bird! I’ve been hearing her a lot on the Current lately. She’s great!
I have never listened to an audio book or read one on kindle either. I don’t even know how to do it.
Mr. SmokeyToes loves audio books, listens to two per week from SFPL. His latest favorites are books from Carrie Fisher, Todd Fisher, Joely Fisher (Growing up Fisher), Leonard Nemoy, William Shatner, and Ron Howard’s book, The Boys.
I would love to listen to audio books but I haven’t managed to get into the habit, yet. One of these days I will!
Hope the consultation went well. I look at our place, and everything is so random…
This is my favorite version
https://youtu.be/s_xA6sH9kkQ
L O L A!?
I was listening to The Kinks the other day thinking that they don’t get much play time on the classic rock station here anymore. They really do rock!
Someday I will have a designer redo my home. I have absolutely no flair for decorating.
I’m no help on the listening front, since I don’t partake, unless you count listening to my cat’s demands for More Food Now which is pretty much a non-stop event here. (Yes, he has dry food available, but he wants More More More canned food.)
Trying to decide if I want to bake a cake for Thanksgiving, or make cookies instead, so then I dove down the rabbit hole of internet cookie recipes, as if I didn’t have at least half a dozen cookie cookbooks…
SOTD is Diorella, which started out green and citrus-y and vintage-y (although this is the current version) and I’m thinking hmm, maybe best saved for summer, and then an hour and a half later it’s shifted to more oakmoss and vetiver and a hint of peach and I am huffing my arm here and I go look it up on Fragrantica and uh oh there used to be a parfum version and here we go down that rabbit hole….
… can you tell I’m procrastinating on staining the deck?
Yes. And I fully support your procrastination!
SOTD is Tauer Sundowner. We done, and very Tauer.
Haircut and mani pedi today.
It looks like the house of many cosmetics and fragrances wants to extend my contract. I am pleased about that.
confession time…I bought an Hermes lipstick. #21 rose incense. pink terracotta goes on like a dream.
I need silence to work and podcasts make me nutty. Music is house music.
Listening to The Vanishing Half in my car.
Oooh…the Hermès lipstick. Kudos.
Such a satisfying magnetic click to the tube!
Congrats on having your contract extended apsara!
You smell great! Congrats on your work extension!
I loved The Vanishing Half, such a great read!
Thank you, I am excited I don’t have to interview for a new project. And they send me fragrance!
For those of you who understand French, France Culture has very good content.
I wore Jasmins Marzipane, very flowery today and less gourmand but not a complaint, and tonight for more almond I am in Reminiscence Dragée, now that one is very nutty with a zingy opening of citrus.
Mmm, you smell yummy!
Thank you Cazaubon. It’s a good gourmand, not talked about much, it has a slightly green aspect too at the beginning, the petitgrain, I think.
Hey all! I’m wearing Ambre Sultan today, from the recent swap meet. I love it!
I listen to a lot of podcasts, but I’ve been gravitating to the funny ones the most lately: I Saw What You Did, No Such Thing as a Fish, and My Dad Wrote a Porno. The last one is definitely not safe for work, but it’s hysterical! I also listen to Generation Why at night if I’m having trouble falling asleep. Even though it’s about true crime, the hosts’ voices are so monotone and soothing, it puts me right out.
In the morning, I wake up to NPR/WBEZ, and that’s what I usually listen to in the car too, unless they’re talking about something boring. I haven’t been into listening to music for a long time, and I don’t really know why! I’m a classical music and opera fan, but I like seeing it live, and I haven’t been to a performance since before the pandemic.
No Such Thing as a Fish and My Dad Wrote a Porno are two of my favourite podcasts ever: I’m looking forward to the inevitable MDWaP Christmas episode.
And if you like that very specific British humour, then you should check out Answer Me This!, which has finished its run with the 400th episode but still has the last 200 episodes available for free. It’s funny and educational and really just addictive. Try #247 and see if you like it — somehow it’s one of the most iconic episodes.
I loved Stuart McLean’s Vinyl Café. RIP.
I remember Vinyl Café! I didn’t realize it was gone; aw. Looks like some of the episodes are on a podcast of the same name.
Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll check out Answer Me This! I do love that type of humor (or humour, since they’re British) 😉
I put my SOTD up above since I’m scent twins with LTSG. Like several of you up above (glad to see!) I need silence most of the time in my house, as I can’t read or work with background sounds or music. Most of my listening is when I’m out in the car going places and I just listen to shows on NPR. I especially enjoy Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street Radio and the Moth Radio Hour. Those stories sometimes literally bring me to tears, they are so moving. (A friend gave me a book of them, which was nice, but I like them far more when told live by the person who wrote them.) Classics can also be really good on audiobooks. I got through the whole of the Iliad and the Aeneid with Derek Jacobi reading them during my commutes to work (school) over many years! And then through several versions of The Inferno. I don’t much like reading poetry when I’m just sitting around, but it comes alive when read by somebody really good.
What a great way to do the classics. I can remember watching Derek Jacobi in I, Claudius in the 1970s.
I saw him in London playing Thomas Beckett. It was great.
I’m also an NPR listener; I love Story Corps. I have been one of those listeners who sits in the driveway with the radio on until the story ends.
me too OH!
I was recorded for story corps when I wrote about living through AIDS in Los Angeles. I was stunned when they asked to record me.
I’ve loved listening to Dickens audiobooks—I suspect his stories have been read aloud for generations. But I have queued up Moby Dick on my audiobook list—waiting to be so moved. MD is a book/story that I have love in theory since I was a kid and read my abridged version to pieces, also Nantucket was a big part of my childhood. But I have never actually read anything by Melville! So, the plan is to listen to it. That is the plan. . . Will start it soon. Fairly soon.
Kiss Me Intense on a day where I was an idiot (okay…nothing new to see here…). Got up, watched Game Day, wrapped my baby shower gift and headed out for the 1 pm baby shower. I get to the church – not a single car in the lot. Call my husband, since I had left the invite on the table. It’s tomorrow, after services. Nothing left to do but go to Target and then pick up some Mexican food to take back home. Sigh.
Going to Target make it a much pricier day of course.
I am craving Mexican food after reading this..
At least you were not a day late!
I’m wearing Lost Cherry because I’m wearing my black cherry coloured cashmere sweater. I listen to podcasts when I am on the track or treadmill – CBC Tapestry because I think the host is the best interviewer I have ever heard/seen, The Moth because some of those people can really tell a story, and Happier with Gretchen Reuben because who doesn’t want to be happier?
I listen in the car and really not anyplace else! I should try Happier. Has it made you happier?
Recent listening: Adele’s broadcast concert for her new album — wow! It was extraordinary. I love her voice, love her songs. The concert setting and her performance were just perfect. This weekend, we’re watching a recorded live concert by Fleetwood Mac; we never tire of their music. Another favorite is the documentary “20 Feet From Stardom”, about the back-up singers behind some of the most famous rock recordings from its beginnings. If you haven’t seen it and you like classic rock, give it a try! I’m looking forward to Peter Jackson’s new documentary about the Beatles, “Get Back”.
SOTD: Cristalle.
I enjoyed 20 feet from . . . Those women, I think they were all women, were/are so talented! All in an industry (and a film) measuring their success in the main by their proximity to fame. (Last sentence sounded deeper and more insightful in my head, but you know what I mean ?)
Good morning! Off to the local Cuban pastry shop for breakfast momentarily. Wearing 4160 Tuesdays Take Me To the River.
Boy I wish I had a local Cuban pastry shop. Or a local Cuban steakhouse, even better.
Hello nsters!
I do not listen to many podcasts these days but watching a lot of chess content videos and solving chess puzzles in my free time to help me disconnect- it’s quite effective! Blame the series the Queen Gambit. In my car I always play the classical music channel (which also helps with stress).
Today I’m wearing a Guerlain vanilla in the form of the lovely Cuir Beluga. Not much leather but maybe the softest of swedes with a soft alcoholic note in the opening and mid. Everything is soft as a cloud in this perfume and I think of the colour white (maybe also because of the whale “beluga”- I wonder how they decided on that name?)
Oh how cool. I loved Queen’s Gambit.
I don’t listen to the radio a lot or podcasts. Just can’t find one that’s a good fit. Spending a little time in Coco Mademoiselle Intense but getting in the shower soon and switch to Lyric. Creating a little shopping list to pick up the last of the Thanksgiving stuff. Will do that tomorrow. My mom was looking at something on my Ulta account and asked what I planned on doing with all those Ulta points I banked. Shrugged and said that I was going to do a Chanel run eventually.
SOTD is Rundholz 03.Apr.1968 – good scent company on a wet and cloudy day. I have finished setting up a new laptop which I have been putting off for many months.
Perfume-wise, after a long adventure my three D.S. & Durga scents finally made it to Malaga. I enjoyed “Spirit of the Glen” yesterday during a storm which caused some damage along the shore. The other two are “Bitter Rose, Broken Spear” and “Pale grey mountain, small black lake”.
When I say “I have no time for podcasts” what I really mean is “…because I waste hours on wretched Twitter nonsense”. Sorry that I have nothing to contribute to today’s theme! :^)
I very much enjoyed reading Laila’s account of the lunar eclipse (yesterday?) – a nicely written and atmospheric piece.
Thank you, Mr. K.!?
SOTD = Dior Sauvage Elixir
… bought the bottle during the recent Sephora sale. Fruity woody spicy amber. Nice!

SOTD yesterday…
– Initially, I wore the Memo Paris Lalibela hair perfume. Smelled nice but did not last long. Will have to up the sprays to my normal 8 to see if it lasts longer.
– Then, I dug into my swap package and wore YSL Black Opium (2016). Well researched by She-ra! I will try the Extreme sometime this week.
I have a feeling my required 1-day per week in-office is ending soon. It will likely be 2 days per week plus one extra day every other week. I have decided my days will be Mondays and Fridays and my 3rd day will be Tuesdays. I will find out tomorrow, I think. Mums the word if my manager does not say anything. ?
JM Myrrh and Tonka for me today. Happy weekend to all those lucky enough to have this last weekend before Thanksgiving (!) off here in the US! ?
Really can believe 2021 is almost in the rear view mirror already….?
