I’m sampling Lubin’s Princesses de Malabar this morning, thanks to the generosity of fellow-NSTer Vee and our recent swap. Princesses reminds me of Malle’s L’Eau d’Hiver, or possibly Iris Poudre, or maybe both (it’s been too long). It’s very pretty (the hubby says “girlie!”), but I’m not getting the peach, magnolia, ylang or jasmine at all, and something about what remains (a combination of sweet powder and aldehydes) just doesn’t work for me. Ah well, more for others to enjoy, and less for me to obsess about.
I haven’t smelled anything from Lubin in awhile.
Vee sent me a whole bunch of them – so far, I’ve completely fallen for Grisette, L de Lubin, and Nuit de Longchamp, and I like Anna but am on the fence about whether I need it. Haven’t sampled Gin Fizz yet, and did not care for Black Jade. I think there might be one or two more that I’m forgetting.
SOTD is Rose Jam shower gel, Argan Rose in shower moisturizer. It’s too hot and humid for perfume?
I’m drinking Raspberry Zinger iced tea and trying to stay cool.
Crazy hot here too… a/c is struggling to keep up.
No SOTD as of yet…lazy, rainy Saturday morning where i haven’t showered. Thinking I’m going to try to get some painting in before I shower. Whatever paint was on the walls in my house got beaten up when they put in the floors. I can’t get exact colour matches for the paint because I used an environmentally friendly / “zero VOC” brand when we first moved in and the kid was a toddler, and the company seems to have completely vanished in the last five years. So I need to paint a bunch of patches of new paint to see what works.
I can still smell the very tail end of Laila — that stuff is tenacious! Fortunately the celery note disappeared after about 30 minutes, but I do think the bottle is off, which isn’t surprising after 20 years of being at the back of a drawer.
Good luck finding the right paint! Most places will at least try to match a paint chip.
I’m in paint color limbo too right now, though I’ll mostly use the same colors as we put our house back together (long story — longer restoration!). Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore both now have zero-VOC lines, and they have hundreds of lovely colors!
I do like choosing paint colors, but it can get overwhelming. I was lucky that a gifted designer friend helped me pick the colors we currently have. I’m especially partial to Benjamin Moore’s Wedgewood Gray, a mix of gray, blue, and green tones that changes color with the light. Our living room used to be a deep red from Sherwin Williams but we’re going to redo it in Rectory Red by Farrow & Ball. It’s also a deep red but it looks richer. One of the bedrooms was done in a Martha Stewart color, and that line was discontinued, so I’ll use a Benjamin Moore color that’s close enough. And we’re changing the color of our dining room from taupe to a soft greenish gray, Sherwin Williams’ Ancient Marble.
Those sound like lovely colours! I love Farrow & Ball, too. I’m just returning now from the local Farrow & Ball store — the accent wall on the top floor was a Sherwin Williams colour match for their Arsenic, and now I’m thinking I should just suck it up and do the real thing since I wouldn’t need more than a gallon. The Benjamin Moores that are supposed to be closest just…aren’t. I’m trying to key off one of my vintage posters, which makes it more of a challenge.
Sadly, “Zero VOC” is what got me into the scramble to match the other walls, I think — it appears that the US FTC sued Benjamin Moore and the small company I used before (YOLO Colorhouse) several years back for saying their paint was zero VOC when it really wasn’t. I’m guessing the fact that YOLO Colorhouse has basically vanished is related to having to pay the settlement, while BM could absorb it. Ah well.
Oh, very interesting! I usually use Benjamin Moore Aura, which I think (?) is low VOC but not Zero VOC
Just for grins, I went looking for a TDS (technical data sheet) for Ben Moore’s Aura. It said that the formulation was zero VOC for the matte.
The settlement was back in 2017, so I have to think Benjamin Moore has brought their claims in line since. I think the accusation was that the companies were making claims about zero VOC being safe for pregnant women, etc., with no studies to back up the claims.
From experience, those paints definitely smell better, whether or not there’s evidence that they’re “safe” for babies. I miss YOLO Colorhouse. They had good colours.
Thanks Jalapeno, that’s interesting. I usually use Eggshell, and all I can say is the smell is hardly noticeable, and despite that, I only paint in weather where I can have windows open.
I use Benjamin Moore Advance on windowsills though, and that stuff does really smell. Dries much harder though, if you do it properly and give it a crazy long cure time.
ockeghem, that makes sense. Aura does not give me a headache, that’s all I know 🙂
My folks left for California this morning and spent some time in Les Annees BIS. Did a few things I have meaning to do before I took my shower and now in Lyric. Have 3 candles going right now and want to see how many candles I can finish over 10 days.
Wow, that is a big candle goal! Rare I finish one in a year.
When you have over 60, you can afford to burn a few at a time.
I keep telling myself–
“NO more candles!!”
But, I find them very hard to resist.
Good luck with your endeavor!!
I’m sampling Francesca Bianchi Sex and the Sea. Not something I need. A beautiful day here, might do some baking. I can’t decide between cream puffs and chocolate chip cookies.
Mmmm… cream puffs!
Difficult choice! I would start with ?
In Givenchy’s Vetyver today. This morning’s crisp air made me reach for it and it has quickly become by favorite vetiver scent. Soft and easy to wear. Enjoy your day, my fragrant friends!
Love vetiver… must try this one!
I’m wearing Brooklyn by Gallivant. Had ana amazing yoga class this morning and am currently getting a mani/pedi. Bliss!
that sounds like a very serene day
Commando at the moment
Will wear something later, as we are having a dinner out at a local Italian Resturant in our neighborhood with friends. I will pick something with low projection. I love socializing again. Wearing makeup..lipstick..eyeshadow. Feels so good!
Have fun tonight ltsg!
I am sure you will look very glamourous! And you can do all the ordering with the waiters in Italian, I’m sure!
10 dreamless hours sleep
off for haircut then mani pedi
Memo Sicilian Leather today
I’m sure you look gorgeous by now apsara!
How sweet! Thank you.
We’re haircut twins today!
Haircut triplets yesterday!
Out early this morning. We tried an online grocery order yesterday and picked it up this morning; never used this convenience during covid but I can certainly see the attraction! I must say the ordering took longer than it should have but it was nice to have it ready this morning. The only thing not in stock was the coffee but I got my quinoa. For some reason quinoa seems to be a holy grail these days.
Wearing Bvlgari Omnia Coral lotion with many sprays of Atelier Oolang Infini on this warm day. Happy weekend!
I did not shop in a big store until I was vaccinated…once you have other people assemble your order, it is hard to go back 🙂
I’m never going back to big supermarkets, and I’m full vaccinated! I realized last year that the only grocery stores I want to go to in person are much smaller and friendlier. We order a lot of dry goods from Amazon; we order online for delivery from the big supermarket near us as needed; and I go once a week to a much smaller grocery store nearby, where I don’t have to check out or bag my own groceries, and I get a friendly greeting from a live cashier. I’ve spent WAY too many years trudging around big supermarkets shopping for my family of five, with less and less customer service every year. Have I mentioned how much I hate “self checkout”?
I’m done. I don’t require or want much in the way of service while shopping, but I do want a nice person to be there at checkout. Especially after a year when so many social interactions, no matter how brief, were eliminated or truncated.
I like shopping in person, but since it’s just for me I usually only have a few bags to deal with. However, I’m totally with you on hating self checkout stations–there’s no counter space to put anything! And most supermarkets, if they have live people to do checking out, make you put all your stuff on the conveyor belt, and there’s not much room to move around the cart. I love Trader Joe’s because they do all that checkout work for you, and the stores aren’t huge so I don’t feel overwhelmed. Fewer choices makes decision-making easier.
I agree, I love Trader Joe’s! And Fresh Market.
I just love to shop and browse. Online shopping, which I did once for my Dad, had zero appeal to me! But it is a good thing for very many people and I’d say it is here to stay.
Oh of course I meant **grocery** shopping!! Ha, ha, Mr. Mossy wishes online shopping did not appeal to me. 😀
SOTD is lemon oil and beeswax… I am polishing furniture. Nice scent 🙂
We spent a few days in Yosemite earlier this week. So nice to go back there after having to miss a year.
How nice! Was it packed? I keep reading all the parks are at full capacity now.
It seemed pretty normal to me. We heard horror stories of 1-3 hour waits to get into the park, but for the 3 days we were there, the longest line we had was all of 5 cars. We didn’t go into Yosemite Valley (hot! 111 degrees!), just stuck to the Tioga Pass area (merely high 80’s) which is our favorite area, and less crowded always.
For folks planning to go there from the SF side, I should note that we used the 120 entrance, which is always less popular than 140 or 41. We did see a line of 30 or so cars waiting to come in on the Mono Lake side when we were going out — there’s only one entrance lane there though, so it’s easy for that side to get backed up.
We arrived on Sunday and departed on Tuesday — Sunday was the least busy day of our visit, Tuesday was the most busy day.
Interesting, thanks Pixel!
That’s a lovely smell!
Why isn’t there a perfume bottle emoji?
Seriously!
I’ve searched I don’t know how many times for a perfume bottle emoji!
I’m testing Perris Monte Carlo Musk Extreme today, from a NM sample. It’s a nice musk, but I’m not sure it’s worth the price tag. I’m looking for something a bit more dirty. I have the Kiehl’s musk, but it’s too heavy for summer. I have Skin Musk and PdN Musc Extreme, but they’re reading as too sweet on my skin. I’ve tried Diptyque Fleur de Peau, but I’m nose blind to it. I have Musc Ravageur and love it, but it’s really for cold weather.
Any suggestions for a not too sweet summer musk with a little naughty in it?
Oops, that would be PdN Musc Intense.
Have you tried AG Musc Nomade? Or Dame’s New Man Musk? The Dame didn’t work at all for me, but musks seem to be something that a person has to try for themselves.
Welp. I feel silly. I have a bottle of Musc Nomade in my stash that I forgot about. So I’ve drenched myself in it, and it’s lovely. I also found a very old sample of Dame’s New Musk that needs serious rehabbing, plus an oil sample of Musc Neutre. I’ll sample the Dames tomorrow. Good grief. Thanks for reminding me of what I already have. Apparently I need the reminder! ?
Ha! That AG is an excellent one to have, though.
Next time I see you I’ll bring you a little sample of Zoologist Musk Deer. I don’t know if you’ll consider it a good one for summer but it’s worth trying!
Musk Deer is niiiice 🙂
Thank you! I will remember to bring the Fazzolaris that I’ve been collecting for you.
Serge Lutens Clair de Musc and cheap thrill Body Shop White Musk are go-to’s for me.
Thank you, Sapphire! I’ll dig in the stash for those.
Another voice for Claire de Musc – it is so inexpensive online – a real steal, I mean it, online. It lasts and does little change-ups to a floral or a fresh citrus from time to time when I’m wearing it.
Thank you MossyBerry!?
A clear morning after days of rain – everything feels better after the gloom. Looking forward to a nice long walk, we didn’t venture far in the wind and wet yesterday. I’m still testing my last bunch of samples, and I might dab on a little Cuir de Chine from Les Indémodables. I get osmanthus rather than leather, which is fine by me.
Trying Azzaro Wanted Girl By Night…Top notes are Whipped cream and Rum; middle note is Night blooming Cereus; base note is Patchouli. An enjoyable sweet fruitchouli to my nose…not getting rum as such.
I have been craving vanilla and patchouli together of late w/ spring/summer fruity or floral notes vs. winter spice/amber/wood. Fruits/flowers + vanilla + patchouli often adds up to a fruitchouli and I am ok with that….I do not fight the fruitchouli. 😉
The news is very sad right now from multiple states and countries…praying for people facing so much tragedy and unrest.
The Azzaro sounds nice! And you are right about the sad news. I’m afraid we’re trending in the wrong direction.
I remember really liking a paper strip sample of Wanted Girl – sweet and easy to wear. *Clinks fruitchouli bottles with you.*
A very hot day today, as so many others above have also stated, with a brief downpour and some thunderboomies in the late afternoon. I am trying to get into a de-clutter mindset (which is not my default mode, I gotta work at it), so every time I take out the garbage I look for something in my room that I can chuck. Or recycle. It’s usually just a few things here and there, but it does make me feel a little better.
SOTD: Musc Intense.
Decluttering is also a challenge for me and I’ve tried instituting a new system for myself this summer…I have a weekly reminder on my phone to throw out (or otherwise get rid of) 2 things a week. It has really helped and over time I’m really noticing the difference.
I like that idea.
I”m feeling a bit ridiculous with little sample squares speed out on my dining room table. After Nancyleandros and I went sniffing at the Houston Galleria on Thursday I returned home with two dozen, count ’em, little sample cards! I managed to write on each what it was but wasn’t as clever as she was at writing on each one where on the body it had been sprayed, e.g., left wrist, right forearm, etc. etc. At one point I resorted to just writing it on my arms with ink! We got very into the options at Acqua di Parma (and I bought something there) and then even moreso at Memo and Harmonist, which was new to me. Neiman’s has also begun carrying Amouage and Perris Monte Carlo, which I don’t recall seeing before the shutdown. I hadn’t been there in a year and a half and think I kind of went overboard, you know, like a little kid at Christmas. I can definitely say one thing: Sintra is the most penetrating fragrance of anything there–it’s utterly nuclear in sillage and projection. Although it has its appeal, I was more taken with Marfa Spice, but no way am I spending $500 on a perfume, nope, sorry, not gonna happen.
I tried the newer Amouage releases and was quite taken with Crimson Rocks, the one with cinnamon. In the Harmonist line, I really loved the dark patchouli one Hypnotizing Fire. Their SA was extremely pushy however and that put me off. I wonder why they say things like “Oh this is our best seller, everyone is buying this!” and think it’s a plus? Hmmm? On the other hand, several of the other SA’s were super-friendly and knowledgeable and just willing to chat away about notes and lines and so on.
“spread out” not “speed out” — Autocorrect again!
What a fun outing! Crimson Rocks did sound really good when I was reading about it.
Agree Memo has some real gems but I feel like I’d have to turn into someone else to spend what they are asking ?
I did an internal eye roll when I heard the Harmonist SA say that about HF.
I was looking through my notes from this year, and Sintra is listed as one of the best of 2020, according to Fragrantica. It’s very interesting and intense, that’s for sure!
I tried the sample of French Leather, and it was mostly just a pretty rose on me. Been there, done that. I’m starting to thing Memo is just not my house. ?
Thank you for the report, that all sounds like so much fun!
SOTM was Houbigant’s Orangers en Fleurs extrait, which I was able to get in a travel size at a very low price. This one is very pretty. I like it a lot, but it’s not a love.
I used up what little I had of the extrait a few years ago, but I remember liking it much more than the EDP. Nice job on scoring a deal!
Wow, where is everybody today? It seems much more quiet here than most weekends, so everyone must be off on adventures.
I forgot to put on perfume earlier today when we walked over to a favorite restaurant for lunch, but I’ve recently remedied that after my evening shower and am in Volutes EDP. Ahh, I love this one and am happy I bought a partial bottle last year.
Eating a ridiculous dinner of Totino’s pizza rolls tonight. ? We don’t often eat junk food anymore, but I saw on Instagram earlier that an acquaintance was indulging in some so I got a hankering. Definitely smells nostalgic cooking in the oven right now. I ate a LOT of pizza rolls when I was growing up and in college.
We had a beautiful cool morning/early afternoon and yes, I was busy outside. Hope those pizza rolls still had their vibe. We also time travel with junk food snacks. Pork rinds, anyone? Will do a shout-out for a rather upscale freezer-section-snack: Hebrew National Beef Franks in a Blanket! And Wally World has them! Get some discount bedding plants while you are there. You’re welcome!
The pizza rolls were great! And we didn’t go overboard and eat the whole bag, so I’ll consider that a success. I’ll consider pigs in a blanket during one of my next junk food cravings. ?
LOL about the pizza rolls! I’ve had more than a few of those in the past 18 months as comfort food. And yes, it is a win if you don’t eat the whole bag!
Or it is too hot even to read NST 🙂
Never! Lol
ITA with lillyjo! Not ever gonna happen!
I bet a lot of people are on vacation or camping this weekend too.
I hope so, and I hope they’re all having a blast 🙂

Well crap, I found a perfume bottle emoji. It won’t copy.
Thanks for trying! For quite some time after I got a smart phone I felt sure that there was a perfume bottle icon. Total wishful thinking!!
SOTD = Papillon Spell 125
I read the Indigo Perfumery monthly e-newsletter and happened to go the very bottom which mentioned Spell 125 being one of the samples. I was confused because the section had June as part of the title but I came to find out that it’s a preview of what we have received it will receive for the current month. Anyway, I wore it today and ?. It stayed very close to skin although if I stay still and sniff, I wondered who smells so good (one of those and yes, it was moi). It is piney, animalic, incensy smoke. Not exactly the same of course but it reminds me of layering Zoologist T-Rex and Chanel Le Lion, with pine and incense added to the mix. Also, in my haste to wear this, I applied it in the powder room and I must say the powder room smells great even after 10 hours!

In other news, I got my haircut today. I don’t even know how I survived not getting it cut for almost 14 months (well, other than trimming my own bangs which I had to or you can call me Cousin Itt). It’s my 3rd haircut – I seem to be on an every 6 to 7 week schedule and I hope our COVID situation doesn’t get any worse!
And here’s my Caturday post:
https://www.instagram.com/p/CRbgRZHhcT3/?utm_medium=copy_link
(I ended up buying it today ?. It matches my rainbow bag.)
Wow, Spell 125 sounds like a must-try for incense lovers!
It sure is!
I meant to respond to your question as to the size of the Chanel Factory 5 body oil. The outer see-through pouch is 7” x 11.5”, the body oil itself is 3” x 5” (without the lightning rod spike) and the spike is 1.75”. So it does fit the the table but is too close to the edge. Once I open it though it will be more manageable.
I am really glad I got my haircut in the brief interval between vaccination and delta variant! Not sure when I’ll do it again. Hope yours is looking great 🙂
Thank you. I will have to consider my next haircut but won’t have to worry until end of August.
I started my new job yesterday! I had an interview for a promotion back in April, and I finally got it! I had such short notice about my start date that I didn’t have time to finish clearing out my desk at my old location, so I’m going to go back to work tomorrow to finish up. The people at the new location seem nice, and I think it will be a good change. I’m excited about all the new restaurant possibilities for lunch!
I didn’t have time to post yesterday, but I don’t think I have any perfumes from Nordic countries anyway. My grandmother was from Norway and I’ve been there a bunch of times to visit relatives. I’ve also visited Sweden, Finland, and Denmark. Iceland is on my to-do list! Last time I was in Copenhagen, I went to a funky perfume store called Crime Passionnel, where I ended up buying Corsica Furiosa. Copenhagen is amazing–the pastries! The decorative arts and furnishings stores! The beautiful streets and canals! I wish I’d had more time there.
Congratulations on the new job!
Hope it goes well, and I like your thinking about new job-new place to eat out! 🙂
w00t w00t w00t for the new job!
Yay, go socks!!
Awesome! Congratulations!
Thanks everyone! 🙂
Congrats on the new job! I too have been to Crime Passionel. I was in Copenhagen for 2 days pre-trip for a cruise…I could stay far longer than that!
Congratulations on the promotion! Definitely go to Iceland. We’ve been three times, twice in summer, once for New Year’s, and it never disappoints. But agree — Copenhagen is also amazing!
Wow, it is quiet today. This late and only 59 comments so far. Very late SOTD is Scents of Wood Plum in Cognac. Heavenly! We were looking at all the pictures of flooding in Belgium and Germany today. Just horrible and completely unprecedented. Luckily, relatives and friends we have there are not in the flood zones.
Courtesy of Hajusuuri, credit where credit is due!!
I’m glad you like it. Did you get my email? My first try went poof but the 2nd one seems to have gone through.
I did and replied, but maybe my email went poof as well. I am interested! I like the charcoal bottle and gold cap. Let me know if you can still get it and how much to reimburse.
SotD = Lumiere Doree by Miller Harrix. Absolutely gorgeous, very natural smelling. Light but with good staying power, with a pretty touch of green. Additionally wearing it overall makes me feel like I smell super clean, like freshly washed laundry – which to me is a huge plus.
Fresh laundry, soapy or powdery are never a minus to me, I love these qualities in perfume.
Which pretty much makes us evil twins, and means I do not need Lumiere Doree 🙂
Aww now I know what evil twins are haha!!
Yep! It’s good to identify people here who love what you hate and vice versa.
Pretty sure we have some loves in common though.
Started out the weekend with my current crush, Fils de Joie; but soon switched to YSL Champagne. My bottle caught my eye while I was looking through samples. I’ve re-spritzed and now I am delightfully wafting from my shirt and forearm. Fragrantica’s list of notes for Yvresse/Champagne, all 25 of them, dazzle me. I pick up stone fruits, carnation, oakmoss and patchouli right away; then all the others seem to dance past at some time or another. It is not a desert island choice, but it has that WOW factor that draws me ever deeper down the rabbit hole…..
I can’t believe I’ve never smelled Yvresse/Champagne. I found a travel spray on eBay that I might have to snatch up soon.
Trapped in Amouage Lyric right now while craving Eau Premiere. Got up pretty early since the dogs wanted to go out and eat. Started some cleaning but the electricity went out. It’s been out since 10am and I am so over this. I want my shower more than I want to heat up my leftovers and eat. The dogs are pretty bored with just having me around.
Oh no! Hope it is back by now Dawn.
Just got my electricity back about an hour and a half ago. Was starting to get a little worried since my cellphone battery was at only 20%.
Wow, that was a long time…glad it did come back!
Nasty weather for me last night! Thunder and lightning and heavy rain, oh my! And some wild wind to boot. Fortunately, we were mostly unscathed. Cell phone service was knocked out for a little while, and that’s about it.
I had my hair cut yesterday, and got a shock when I went to my salon. No temperature checks or socially distant check in this time. And I was the only person wearing a mask. But you know what? I didn’t care and kept the mask on.
SOTWeekend = Atelier Cologne Encens Jinhae, from Lisa D and the Sample Stash. It’s a quiet, pretty scent that has worked well for me as of late.
I went to the pharmacy the other day, and they had taken down the plexiglass. I had to extra social distance from the counter.
Congrats on a fresh haircut!
Hmmm, I was at the grocery store this morning, and the plexiglass in the deli pickup area had been removed. Not liking this trend.
Thanks lillyjo! Not quite as big a pile of hair this time, though. My stylist even commented on it. Odd, since my hair usually grows like crazy in the summer.
Yeah, it looks like people are on their own for social distancing measures now. SMH
Glad you were still wearing a mask! I plan on it for my haircut next week (guess who’s counting down the seconds).
If you want to send some rain out west, I will take it!
I would gladly send all this wet stuff where it is sorely needed! Getting too much here. ?
If I ever need it, “Lisa D and the Sample Stash” is going to be the name of my new band.
Love this!??
Rock on! ???
Eh, we had a light and water show last night too but thank goodness no power or cell phone outage.
We are haircut twins. No masks this time nor the last time 6ish weeks ago. With this said though, I am back to wearing a mask voluntarily at Whole Foods and Wegmans and Home Goods. I did not though at the mall.
I did take off my mask to get shampooed. Then I put it back on. There were a lot more people there this time, too.
But dang, it felt good to get that cut!
I am often the only person in an indoor environment with a mask, and yeah, I could care less. Luckily I don’t live in place (knock on wood) where people harass mask wearers.
I’m working tonight, wearing 8 sprays of Shalimar Philtre. If this ever pops up at discounters, I would get a bottle. It’s very easy to wear.
Hope that you have a good night tonight!
Woo hoo! I had a semi difficult time getting the Philtre but hopefully it will be available at the discounters at some point.
It sounds crazy considering the heat, but I braised a chuck roast this afternoon. It was a complicated recipe, sautéing veggies to make the marinade and such. I started it on Friday night and ran the oven for three hours today. ? It was very good, worth the trouble, but I’m bushed. Plus, the house smells like a steakhouse. I think I’m more sensitive to cooking smells than I used to be. More sensitive to all the smells, probably.
Anyway, I’m in Roja Dove Vetiver Pour Homme Parfum Cologne to cut through the beefiness around here. It’s a beautiful vetiver with light citrus notes. From a sample that I’m pretty certain won’t turn into a FB.
I’ve noticed that I am much more sensitive to the smell of frying eggs than I used to be. There are some times where it is just “YUCK”. Dunno why, either.
I can smell frying eggs in a cast iron skillet from two floors away (and I run down screaming, no! not my cast iron!). 🙂 Every time I roast a chicken my house smells for two days. (Can’t do that now, with the reno, though…)
